Re: Mariah/Whitney (78,180) (78,182)

You are absolutely right about Whitney and Mariah. That is what got me into singing as well too. There voices are gifts from God. In my opinion I have not heard anything or anyone that can match them, they are so talented. I studied them I was so desperately trying to be like my idols. The two of them together taught a generation how to sing, from Christina, Ariana Grande, Beyonce Adele and so forth. Mariah and Whitney Houston [were] everything to me when I was growing up. I didn't think there was anything like them. I too grew up wanting to be like the great Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey.

Mariah/Whitney (78,180)
by Mara from United States

So I don't know if anyone here watched the Whitney special on Showtime this weekend, but I did and it was OK. They made it seem like Whitney would still be alive today if she was able to be herself and love who she wanted to love. It went into her love life and how they didn't want certain people around her, how controlling her mother was, how the record label wanted her to be "more pop" more appealing to all audiences and not as "black sounding". She finally wanted to change things when she released I'm Your Baby Tonight. Being a fan originally of Whitney, it was interesting yet very sad. It also got me to revisit a lot of Whitney's music and the album Whitney, which I still love to this day. Songs like , Where You Are, Just The Lonely, For The Love of You. The sound of her voice in those songs still takes me away. I can't help but hear a lot of similarity to the debut Mariah as Whitney had to have influenced MC. I still remember the somewhat rivalry in the beginning of MC's career, especially at award shows when Whitney was sitting in the audience with Bobby and members of New Eddition and they announced Mariah's name. Of course they have long since came together and became friends, but I often wonder why Mariah didn't say Whitney as an influence as much as she did Stevie Wonder, Gladys Knight, Aretha Franklin, when clearly you can hear the similar singing style. I suppose it's because Mariah's early influence probably was those people as Whitney was mid 80's. Perhaps, it was MC's record label that wanted her to sound more Whitney like and the more records she released she steered further away from that sound. Could be that Whitney was looked at as her competition and she wasn't in control of her original sound, much like Whitney and therefore wasn't happy with certain material. So many interviews of MC she can be heard saying that when someone is new, they always have to compare them to someone on the music scene, hence Whitney. I just can hear a lot of Whitney's formula on MC's debut even with the rock/guitar sound on You Need Me and So Emotional. Tommy used the same formula to get himself his own version of Whitney. Although his version was so much more, as she wrote and produced her own music and had so many layers to her voice. I'll always love them both as Whitney was who got me into singing, but Mariah will always be my girl. I connected with her on so many levels. Thank God they recorded their duet when they did. They will forever be the voices who changed it all.

Stella is the zombie dragon, Edward. You made me laugh and thank you for providing the reason for us to watch the season 8. Can't wait on what "Stella" can do to destroy King's Landing. Cersei, Stella is coming.

Taylor's video is only two million shy of beating the all time record for most views in the first twenty four hours plus all of the controversy has created buzz and strong sales. Mariah will still hold the record.

They might be sharing the record with Mariah and Boyz II Men, but they didn't set it. It's an accomplishment I feel proud of as a Latino, but tying a record is not the same as breaking it. They might still break it, but Taylor is definitely coming strong, so I doubt it they'll break it. If they do though, it's still a huge accomplishment for Mariah and Boyz II Men to have kept that record for nearly 25 years.

A huge fan of Game of Thrones here too, but as big as the show always is, and with the huge amount of work that goes into producing it, I don't think they would deal with huge egos, actors showing up late and other shenanigans. One thing though, Stella would've killed the role of the "Dead Dragon". Her contouring would have saved them thousands of dollars in make up to make her look like on of them. She would've only needed a pair of wings, a tail and that's it. She has the claws, the hideous leather jackets and the face of a dragon.

Sorry guys, it's not majorly Mariah related but I do love "Game Of Thrones". When Mariah acted in that cheesy advert for Clash Of The Titans I cringed but laughed also in all honestly. It would have been wonderful if she played a part in an ultimate series. Mariah would have made a badass character, even if small, cringe or entertaining, I still would have loved it.

Mariah and Boyz II Men are now joined by three other artists in sharing the Hot 100 Record. Can't believe I'm saying this, but I am thankful Taylor Swift released her music when she did, because her early numbers all but guarantee Mariah/Boyz II Men can still co-share the record.

I purchased both versions of the Unforgettable remix on Amazon and for some reason I can't access them. Ugh. Has anyone else ever had this issue when buying songs from Amazon? I called and they said they'd look into it and e-mail me.

"Vanishing" is so great. The lyrics touch my heart every time. I find it so impressive too, that such a young woman was able to write a song like this. How I wish Mariah would write a song like this again. At the age of only twenty (or even 18) she created music with such class and quality. Unbelievable. It was a wonderful time where the music had substance. Now 99 % is about superficial, boring topics if you listen to the "youngsters" on the radio/charts. The heart and real emotions are often missing. I will always love Mariah for her debut. And of course for a genius "Vanishing".

It was nice for team Mariah to acknowledge what's going on in Houston. I was not expecting her or her team to say anything nor was I thinking she was obligated in any way to acknowledge what is happening. The hardest part of this whole situation for me is that I'm stuck at work for I don't know how long and I'm only in touch with my family and friends through Facebook and texts.

Forgotten gem: Vanishing (78,162)
by Bill from the UK
| |
|
|
Following on from The One, I was listening to Vanishing (I do most days of my life), and I am astounded at how a girl of 18 (maybe younger) wrote such a moving, timeless, beautiful song. Other than Vision of Love, it is the true highlight of the debut album, and in amongst all the over production and dated synth of the other tracks, it stands out as simply being Mariah's incredible voice and a piano. And those live versions where she transitions into her upper register at the end... wow.

Jennifer Lopez vs. Mariah Carey (E. News) (78,160)
by Malcolm from Asia
| |
|
|
I couldn't agree more, especially with that guy. It's really the pressure to catch up with the others why Mariah does what she does in recent years, but the reality is, she really can't. JLo can, because that's her strength and she knows it unlike Mariah. If she wants to do something, do it well, but if she can't, just don't do it because the result is confusion to people. She's a singer-songwriter, so stick to that and strengthen it but if she wants to do other things, just be sure she can pull it off. And I hope someone tells her what social media can do to her image because she's so hated online and it's her fault. I just hope she will return to her core soon.
