Butterfly (77,023)
by Billy from Greece
| |
|
|
Am I the only who goes through "Butterfly" as an almost "sacred" listening experience? Having been addicted to it once again the past few months, I'm still amazed at the intensity and mixture of emotions that I'm overwhelmed with after listening to the whole album. It is by far one of the most (if not the most) gorgeous albums I've ever listened to in my life. The melodies, the layering, the production which is timeless and organic, yet cutting edge, the vividness and confessional tone of the lyrics and vocal performances, run through me and get me each time. I'm in awe. Listening to it almost twenty years after its release, and with everything that has passed off in Mariah's life before or after it, I can honestly say that it is without a doubt the freest and truest Mariah has ever been as an artist on record. And I don't think we fully realize what a bold artistic statement the whole album was at the time, and still is. Forget about the whole "Mariah going hip-hop", this is totally irrelevant. We're talking about an album representing a "mainstream" artist expanding, reaching her utmost genius and crafting music that has spoken to millions of people. It is the musicianship that truly leaves me speechless, especially considering that in the broader context this is "just popular music" as some purists would say. The boldness lies in Mariah aiming for and achieving utter sophistication in her music, taking her time with the songs, building on them as the listening unfolds, making you rethink the limits between chart music and artistry. Sonically speaking, the album is pure beauty. Finally, can we talk about the magic, the exquisiteness, the insurmountable glory that Mariah produces with her background whistles in the intro of "Fly Away"?

The Muppet I don't want to name (77,022)
by Edward from USA
| |
|
|
I don't really want to say the name of that female Muppet because I don't want to be disrespectful to people who are overweight due to medical reasons, but Mariah is looking more and more like that character from the Muppet's Show I used to watch when I was a kid. If she keeps going like that Ms. Piggy's going to sue her for copying her brand. She's really turned into a vivid caricature of her former self, and it seems to be that at this point there's not shame in putting horrendous performances while dressed like a circus poodle, I can't. Her legs look as if they were detachable from the hips, like they don't go with her body. If it's not medical, I hope she lays off the pizza and big Macs, people are not paying their money to see her sounding and looking like that.

More legs and thighs than a bucket of chicken (77,021)

With the recent weight gain, I was praying she was not going to (re)wear the same Vegas ensembles. Don't get me wrong, I love me some Mimi (since 1990). I just can't stomach to see photos of her anymore, or watch her performances. She needs the team from TEOM era and she needs them back baaaaad. I need a new album fast, to help free me from all this frustration.

It's funny that you complain someone is negative, when only last month you wrote: "Mariah Carey's career over the last 8 years lacks direction. The bad vocals, the weight gain, the poor fashion choices, the tumble in heals, the hitting her head on the door on TMZ video."

Negative Betty. Again, why are you here if your [sic] 100% negative [censored]? We hope for greatness and if we get 75% of that we are appreciative.

Agree. What's the reason people should go to her concert? Her voice or her body? I wish her confidence would get back so she could concentrate on her voice again. Do you guys think this is weight gain or has she done something else with her body? I don't think it's natural and her legs looks like they contain water.

Vegas (77,014)
by Will from England

I've never seen her look so sad, so more restricted vocally on stage, than she does right now. It's like she's on stage but she's somewhere else in her head, as if something else is on her mind. Even when she's lipping the climax's, to We Belong Together and DFAO the energy is not there. She's dodging every high note she can and taking the songs lower.

As DV said a while ago, we all know what the Lionel set list will be. It will be the same as every other set list. Allow me to elaborate: 08:00 start time 08:10 arrive (late) to Looking In intro 08:15 Emotions (dodged high notes and lipped) 08:20 My All (partially lipped) 08:25 ("Just one more night" club refrain goes on as MC changes costume) 08:30 Trey Lorenz solo song 08:35 I'll Be There (100% live but awful) 08:40 Band Introduction 08:45 Ramble about how much she hates Hero 08:50 Hero (partially lipped) 08:55 We Belong Together (lipped) 09:00 Butterfly Outro

I don't really understand why she can't get great outfits with all that money she has. Her thighs looked like it was going to pop out with that bodysuit.

Ok so this is maybe the fourth time I'm saying this but Mariah needs to cover MJ's "Speechless". The song is perfect and suits Mariah's style. I would love to hear her take on it. Other alternative as usual would be "You're are not alone" and "Butterflies". I think I vaguely remember Mariah once talking about liking "Butterflies" (the song haha, we all know for a fact that she loves the insect). But please Mariah, cover "Speechless". That song needs some recognition. It is so beautiful yet so simple, the lyrics are amazing, it's haunting yet soothing at the same time.

All The Hits (77,009)
by B from USA

Mariah will do fine. She's doing good in Vegas at the moment from the videos I've seen uploaded on YouTube. She'll most likely lip parts of her uptempos to preserve her voice for the ballads which makes sense. I think she'll sound like she did on Kimmel when she performed I Don't and like she does in Vegas when she sings TGIFY. She knows her future as a headliner is at stake. She wanted to tour North America to reconnect with her stateside fans but couldn't because of her Vegas contract so she teamed up with Lionel. I believe they have a lot of fans in common and least the Mariah fans she had from 1990 to 1997. This is her chance to prove to them that she can still sing and to remind them why they fell in love with her in the first place. Plus if well rested, hydrated, and warmed up she can easily slay a 60 minute set list. She should perform Can't Let Go and Anytime You Need A Friend.

The American Express Centurion is not limitless. That is a fact. There is no pre-set spending limit as it's a charge card but no pre-set spending limit does not equal limitless spending. It's a control mechanism that AE uses to better tailor spending approval in the company's best interest. That means that what you can buy can go in either direction based on credit, spending history, payment history, and yearly income. Any of that changes and what you're allowed to buy and how much you're allowed to charge on the card can change and in either direction, not just up.

No limit only in theory, in practice past spending and payment history are taken into account before approving payment and payment can be declined.

For once, I'm just going to follow the advice of the lambs who constantly bleat out "it's the first night", (ya know, as if Mariah's entitled to sounding subpar on the first night when people have paid their hard earned dollars to hear her at her best ) and just hope things get better and that better is actually good.

Randy, this may be the missing link you have been looking for: that grand unifying theory that links 1996 Mariah to 1997 Mariah. Is it possible that Mariah recorded this late 96/early 97? It certainly sounds as if it may have been. In the silences, I almost expect to hear: "Now you can have me when you want me."

I've just watched some clips from her last Vegas show and it's really not good. If you compare to last year it's just awful. She looks and sounds horrible. At this point I think it's just the end for her. I wonder how she can possibly go through the Lionel tour without getting any tomatoes right on her face.

Wished Mariah released a photo album, like those Madonna did once upon a time. I would love for her to include some of those rare never seen pictures as bonus.
