Re: Article: Mariah's first live performance since disastrous NYE gig (72,778) (72,804)

We don't lower the bar. She held back on Vision of Love. She did so so she could deliver a solid performance. Just because she didn't whistle or hit a high note doesn't mean she no longer can. She's proved she can over and over again. She's never had issues with her whistle register, I think she held back because of nerves. It's been proven that nerves affect the voice. Go watch the video she released after the opening night debacle of the TECT in which she whistles to the melody of Ain't No Mountain High Enough.

So, finally built up the courage to watch the Kimmel performances and have to say I was pleasantly surprised, it wasn't perfect but overall it was one of her better performances of late and hopefully we get more like this.

So I feel like if Mariah changes up her singing style she can get more respect again. I feel like that ultra smooth pretty quality Mariah had to her voice is gone (besides when she's in whisper tone) but she has that raspy husky tone that is amazing in a different way. She should embrace that more her voice at times now is giving me Lauryn Hill vibes. I just think she's lost her pop voice her vocals play better to r&b and jazz more and when she plays within that realm she has great moments. Hope she plays to her new strengths going into the next album

I agree, I think this is the reason she is getting so much negativity at the moment. I want to relate to her and her music again. In the 90ies I did. Also in early 2000s. But when I see Mariah having fishnet outfits with a plunging front, her wearing diamonds in every picture - it's creating a disconnection between her and the public. I don't relate to this. Now if she would do a video wearing this in some art piece or story, I could accept it, but she seems to always be wearing this. Plus, Mariah's World made it seem like she was emotionally cheating on her boyfriend at the time. Honestly, it was such a bad move of them to only focus on her and her dancer, so quickly after the breakup and now to claim that they are dating. It's not a good image. No one is going to relate to that. Even though the song I Don't is catchy, it's overshadowed by all this. She was moving on too fast and this song I Don't would have worked better if that show hadn't focused on her new relationship blooming when she was supposed to wed someone else.

Wendy shade? (72,798)
by RibbonB from USA
| |

I just saw this video of Charlie Wilson performing on Wendy Williams last week. At the end of this performance of "Outstanding" Wendy throws a little shade about lip synching. I wonder was that directed at Mimi, Wendy's favorite target. Anyway, I can't wait to check out Charlie's new record and the new one from Jidenna this week. Jidenna might be a good one for Mariah to consider for a collaboration. Something different.

I'd be nervous if my last performance had had technical glitches. I think any performer would have been. She was singing live, do you really think she'd take that risk? She's a lot of things but stupid isn't one of them.

All this fake outrage over the word boring? Of all of the things that have been said about Mariah on this board, all of the name calling and insults, people are outraged about that. It is just an opinion about one performance. If it was said that she was tentative, someone would have taken offence to that too I suppose. I don't think anyone on the board has said she did badly on Kimmel, which is a good thing.

Lucia I wasn't saying you brought up the lipping thing. I was just using an example of what sometimes gets to me. I am sorry if it came off like I was only talking to you. I meant it more as a general comment not specific to you. You have a right to your thoughts as everyone does.

Need to make sure when I say VOL is a simple song, in no way did I mean simple song to sing. I meant some of MC's songs have vocals all over and don't translate well live or without a ton of backing tracks. VOL is straight up Mariah.

I wasn't a part of the lipping conversation. I actually have said from the beginning she sounded great. I agree it's pointless to debate about the lipping because we know she does it.

I think it's perfectly OK for people to be more engaged with some performances than others. To me it's the same thing as really loving specific songs or albums whereas some don't resonate or grab you as much. I freely admit that the constant debate over backing track and lipping feels grates me sometimes because I just want to enjoy the presentation of the music, not go picking through it with a fine tooth comb. She lips at times lol. There's nothing we can do about it. At least acknowledge live vocals even if there over top of a track, she's still singing.

Nerves (72,786)
by Mara from United States

I agree she was nervous. She had a lot on her and she knew it after NYE. As B said, even her fans were displeased and went in on her after NYE. Plus ID is a new song and she never performed it ever before so to pick a song she never performed as your reemergence song, it showed that she was concentrating on just getting that right and she was focusing on the song and getting through it. She did well other than being stiff and I think the dress was too tight to move around even if she lipped a complete song let alone really sing. I wish it was VOL that was televised but I get that she needs to push the new song. I think she chooses VOL to be the one she sings live all the time because other than it being her signature debut song and really showcase her range, it really is a simple song without any backing vocals so it comes across better. JMO.

I thought she loosened up once YG reemerged she even laughed and started adlibbing. She was neverous because even her fans had been blasting her since the NYE debacle.

In my 27 plus years of being a fan I've never wanted Mariah to ever twerk. Lol. Anyway she has certain songs that don't really translate well live to me. You're Mine is a perfect example. That BET Honors performance was snooze worthy. As I said in my original statement I don't know whether it was the minimal movement or whether it was just the song. Either way she killed both performances vocally and that's all I really care about. Maybe like Mimi L said it was her nervousness that was making the performance off. Maybe boring is the wrong word. She still did a great job though. *shrugs*

Completely agree. I always found it refreshing that Mariah wasn't dancing like a Britney Spears or Janet Jackson. For Britney it made sense, she was never a vocalist. Anyway I understand what some of you mean with "boring". If she works on her voice and gives a performance with a song that comes from her heart I'm sure nobody will find it boring. Great singers don't need dancing and a show. It's a bonus if they offer this entertainment while singing. I only wish Mariah wouldn't be so nervous. She needs her confidence back.

Funny you say this, because you are also very negative. Here are a few of your comments: "Mariah is worst than Whitney before she passed." (72,575) "Of course she's laying down on 'something', trying to look sexy while going through her mid-life crisis." (71,953) "The show did nothing to help Mariah's image problem and did not deliver one great vocal moment." (71,667) Or is it that when somebody say these things, they're negative, but when you them, it is the truth?

Boo, do like I do, read the first sentence and keep scrolling. We should have all realized by now that some of these lambs are negative and unhappy and put all there issues on Mariah. They would not be happy if she wont 10 Grammys - they would say, "But her dress is too short or put the globes away." This fanbase is unhealthy for her at best.

I enjoyed the performances and I agree with everyone - "I Don't" sounds much better live. I think the biggest issue with the song is, although it's catchy, I believe the general public is having a hard time relating to the lyrics of "I Don't" because of all the lies associated with it. It's difficult to sympathize with Mariah's failed engagement when her emotional cheating with Tanaka was televised for the world to see and now we're seeing a picture of her and her new boyfriend in a hot tub just a few months after her engagement ended. When the V-Day hot tub picture was posted on The Shade Room's Instagram account, I noticed that 10% of their followers were happy for Mariah and the other 90% called her a "thot". On the other hand, when a picture of Mariah and her kids are posted on TSR's account, she receives nothing but compliments across the board and the highest number of likes overall on that day. I think people are just sick of seeing all of the "extra-ness" flaunted in their faces all the time. Nowadays, people like to support artists who they can relate to. No one can relate to the pictures she posts on IG of her bathing with diamonds on, vacationing on expensive yachts, or working out in fishnets and high heels. If Mariah could just focus on the two things she says are the most important to her - music and her family (the kids) - everything would be great. I personally don't think people want to hate Mariah, they are just tired of her behavior.
