Alanis was deserving but to say Mariah wasn't during her peak for any award that is/was supposedly awarded to the best female vocalist is insane. She may not have deserved album or song of the year but she definitely deserved the awards for vocals in 1995.

As long as she toured sporadically and if she was actually in charge of her social media accounts and interacted with her fans and occasionally performed and/or presented at events and acted in prestige films like Precious and The Butler I'd probably be fine with her semi retiring but I'd also always crave new music from her and I doubt she'll ever stop recording.

Great point T.J. We shouldn't judge an album based on whether the artist is popular today or not, but in terms of its content and quality. Mariah happened to be going against an excellent album. I love Daydream, but Jagged Little Pill was as great. Alanis didn't snatch those Grammys from Mariah, the people who didn't vote for her did. And Alanis still today is an excellent lyricist.

She performed at the Grammys during the E=MC2 era. In fact I remember that performance because Mariah looked like she stepped into a time machine and brought her 1996 self there to perform, she looked amazing.

Congrats to Anthony Burrell. I hear he choreographed Beyonce's triumphant Grammy performance. The chair thing was scary, but it was all very effective, especially with her being pregnant. He is making good use of his time I see.

I'm going to respectfully disagree with you. Stella is an enabler, the Howard K. Stern of managers. She doesn't care one bit about Mariah's image or legacy. She creates bad situations for Mariah, so she can feel empowered to "save the day". As suggested on this board, I wouldn't be surprised if Stella is laughing behind the scenes along with the rest of the general public. As I was standing in line for my Meet & Greet photo opportunity last year I witnessed first hand how Stella walked into the photo room (during the middle of the M&G) to inform Mariah of some kind of bad news. I couldn't hear exactly what she was saying to Mariah, but I noticed it made her tear up. And of course Stella ended the conversation with, "I'll take care of it." Thank goodness my picture with Mariah still turned out great, but I always thought it was so strange that Stella felt the need to tell her bad news at that moment in time. She could have waited until the M&G was over so MC could enjoy her fans who paid to meet her without any distractions. I think Stella lies to Mariah to make situations seem better than they are, but in turn manipulates her into thinking things are only good because she made it that way.

Grammys (72,677)

I see that the Grammys have been a hot topic here since yesterday while MC could have attended the show why would she? She was not asked to participate in any tributes or present anything so I didn't see the point. On another note the Grammys have never really respected MC even during her peak and with her on the outside looking in at the popular crowd nowadays I didn't see her purpose being there. Was it a missed opportunity? Not really because award shows like these are all about politics.

I agree with you. I don't understand why so many lambs are terrified of the idea of Mariah retiring. Even on her best day, any new material that she puts out is never going to be better than anything we've heard in the past. She has set the bar too high for herself lyrically and vocally in the past for it to get that much better anyway. I would rather Mariah be retired and adored than wearing out her welcome in the public eye and losing all of her integrity like she's doing now. She's put out 14 studio albums. For anyone to feel like that's not enough to the point that they'd rather have her sell her soul and lose her dignity in hopes of a new album that will be a 7/10 at best, that is just pure greed to me. When is enough, enough?

It's not about where Alanis is today. At that point she made one h*ll of an album. It was the biggest hit of the year. I still enjoy the songs. She even recreated it acoustic ten years later (Mariah should do the same). Adele, a charismatic artist, a good voice and with really good songs, deserves her awards. Why on earth are Mariah's lambs so envious of other artists who do well? Mariah lost that year (1996/97) to an artist who was no less to Mariah and the "Daydream" album.

If Mariah lip syncs on Kimmel, I probably will be so sad for her and all lambs still fighting for her. How disastrous of a karma does she need to wake up? Please don't lip sync Mariah. Some people are still rooting for you. Please don't disappoint. I think fans deserve to see an all live performance on tv. Please just one. we haven't had one since Petals on Rosie's show in 2000. I honestly feel so sad about that. (Please correct me if you know of any all live tv performance after that.)

The problem with Stella (72,671)
by Danny from Uk
| |
|
|
I don't necessarily think Stella is bad for Mariah personally, I get the impression that they understand or appreciate each other at a deeper level and nor do I think she's bad for Mariah professionally. However, the problem I believe lies in how she goes about that business, more so how she markets Mariah or how she leaks or allows things to leak that may generate talk or news articles but aren't good for Mariah's overall brand and I believe ultimately that is the most damaging. If Mariah wants Stella to make her money and to make it quick then great she's tour man but if she wants to continue to mould and grow her craft, artistry and legacy she can't allow Stella to continue. I don't know if Stella actively goes for it or if it's a by product of having a fame/money hungry woman in charge of a superstar.

How do we solve a problem like Mariah? (72,670)
by John from USA
| |
|
|
I've been asking myself this question over and over for the last several years. I agree with many of you on here. This current era we are in right now is much worse than the Glitter era. Yeah, she had the breakdown and was flopping, but at least Loverboy was a (fake) #2 hit and the general public still respected her voice for the most part. It's sad that Mariah is sorta turning into a Kardashian. She's literally almost a different person than she was in the 90s and early 00's. It's like everything changed right after TMB and E=MC2 both had great starts. Everything after TMB (with the exceptions, arguably, of Obsessed and Beautiful) has been a disaster. I think Mariah should have taken an extended break from the public eye after MIAMTEC flopped, dealt with the divorce and her shoulder, then come back late last year/early this year with a banging bod and great new music. But I feel like she'll never do that. She seems lazy and like she just doesn't care about her music career anymore. I feel like she's lost in a way. And I've been a huge fan for almost 20 years since I bought the Honey CD single. Wish to God Mariah could find her direction. I'd love another hit single or two from her. It's a sad, sad time to be a Mariah fan.

Artists don't always get to choose the shows they appear on. Even Mariah. Her last appearance on Ellen wasn't comfortable, she wouldn't play the game and didn't answer many questions directly. She publically reprimanded Ryan Seacreast for calling Mariah's World a reality show, when he was actually trying to say he was enjoying it. People are familiar with the term reality show, and that's how Mariah's World was packaged. The term docu-drama isn't what people know. I adore Mariah, I do, and I get she doesn't like the words reality show but you can't be defensive and then expect that people want you around. As others have said she likely wasn't asked to perform.

Here's my own order. 1. Migrate (Should have been the 2nd single from E-MC2. This is the first time I think Team-MC made a glaring screw up in single choices. It was charting and wasn't even a single.) 2. Through the Rain 3. Up Out My Face (Nicki should have been on the album version, one of my fave MC videos ever.) 4. Say Somethin' (Agreed, this amazing video deserved a better song.) 5. I Don't (I dislike the video, except the final moments of dress burning. A unique classy video could have gone a long way.) 6. Infinity (There's a serious disconnect between the bitter sour lyrics, and the celebratory nature of the instrumentation. The lyrics are so bitter, it doesn't make sense as the closing song after hearing her 18 number one songs.) 7. Oh Santa (The chant is amazing, but the intense whistle in the middle is way to disruptive and pierces the ear drums in a negative way, especially when it comes on in public at the mall or something.) 8. You're Mine Eternal (We Belong together/Don't Forget About Us/I Stay in Love rehash part 4.)

I couldn't bring myself to even watch Mariah's World. Not one episode. First time ever in her career. That is not Mariah. I won't ever judge her or drop her, if I thought for one moment things like "Mariah's World" were what she truly wanted deep inside, it would be different. But this stuff isn't the real her. I truly feel underneath it all she's carrying around a lot of pain. and has built up a lot of walls for protection and it's only amplifying what she hasn't dealt with. Sorry, if I sound like a therapist, not my intention, just my honest feelings. Lol.

Thing is they need to make aggressive moves to snatch back her throne but her team just sits there and waits for opportunities to come to them. But that's not going to work because her image is so bad right now that opportunities will be few. However with limited connections on Stella's part, I don't see that happening too. Also Stella is mainly influencing Mariah to do cheesy easy bucks stuff like the reality show, the biopic (which I am already thinking is a bad idea, because I've seen there creative vision with the ID video and MW) and Hallmark movies. These won't really do much for Mariah or her legacy. She's a music icon first and foremost but music seems to be the last thing in their minds right now.

Stella must have enough dirt on Mariah to ruin her image to be able to get Mariah to agree to a reality show. I was hoping for an actual tour documentary I didn't even want to see her planning the commitment ceremony or flirting with B. It's a messy era that has made her a joke to the general public. She's going to have to work even harder to repair her image after the reality show and the IG stunts. She needs a new manager ASAP.

I think we're all assuming the Grammys invited her to perform and she turned them down and went to a party instead. With her current reputation they probably didn't ask her to perform. But when has Mariah been a Grammy staple anyway? She last went for TEOM nominations. Plus according to a Billboard article the original George Michael tribute idea featured Adele, Beyonce and Rhianna but GM's family wanted only Adele to do it. I'm sure Mariah was sadly not even considered although ironically One More Try was one of the songs for the original medley with Beyonce and Rihanna.

The problem is that I think Mariah was never truly respected by the music industry. Even when she realeased Daydream she was snubbed by the Grammys. Sadly she will be respected when she's gone.

Mariah should have attended the Grammys (72,659)
by Jamie from UK

I personally [...] MC should have attended the Grammys, it would have raised her profile and show that she still cares about the music industry. Most of the big stars were there, and it would also have opened her eyes to how passionate some of the stars are about their music and performances. It may have instilled in her and made her think you know what I've still got it and I'm gonna prove it to you guys. She may even have got inspiration of new ideas and which direction to go.
