Divas 96 (the trinity, in memoria) (62,798) by Andrew from UK
Is it so hard, so impossibly difficult to accept, that, sometimes, just sometimes, somebody can sing, or did sing, better than Mariah Carey? If it was Divas Live 1996 I think she would've stratosphered everybody's ass off. Can you imagine if Whitney, Celine and Mariah had done that in '96? Sometimes I look back and think there were so many wasted opportunities, so many great things that could have been done, so many moments lost. As it was, Divas Live 1998 hung off the back-end of the Butterfly tour and Mariah was vocally knackered but she still pulled some serious shit off. That show is an historic masterpiece. Celine doing her thing did not upstage anybody, did not embarrass anybody and she was not rude. If you don't like the fact Mariah wasn't the best one on the stage for that one song then don't watch it. Her solo performances were fiercely entertaining and Chain Of Fools is what I would play anybody to show what Mariah being a straight forward and fun vocalist was (remember those days of being an entertainer and not lipping and pouting and touching the tits?). Celine and Mariah are friends and respect each other. They are from a different era, a golden era. Not that I want to live in the nineties again (although sometimes, in the dark of the day, it has its appeal hah) but watching Divas Live has made me very nostalgic for that era of the vocal trinity. I can't imagine that will ever happen in that way to that level again, at least in our lifetimes. Whitney ruled, Celine ruled and Mariah ruled, and by the end of the nineties, they all loved each other and are all icons in any sense of the meaning that word can have. Whatever we think about the now, let's just remember it that way. [censored] it was good.

I have to ask you Nikki, did you see Riri's "Performance of love" on The Brain, at the Billboard Awards? First time I thought Riri actually sounded really good live.

Hey Jenny, I meant Ariana not Celine in my message, sorry if I wan't clear. I wouldn't write anything negative about Celine's voice as I do recognise her ability as a singer. I watched the Chain Of Fools performance again and you can see Mariah is just elated to be sharing the stage with Aretha. Aretha even starts singing Mariah's verse, before saying "go ahead" and letting her continue it. That's what I meant by her holding back. Carole King showed Aretha the same respect, as she was supposed to open Natural Woman but Aretha sang the verse instead. She punctuated a line with "thanks" directed at Carole for allowing her to take the lead. For me, the Natural Woman performance was one thing, but I think the comments Mariah made around Celine come from the "Testimony" finale. Watching that you can really see that Aretha was getting annoyed haha. All that said, I really have no issue with Celine whatsoever, I was just elaborating on Mariah's comments and her performance that night.

Carol King's commentary on the showdown Divas' showdown. Maybe this will give everyone more prospective on what was actually going on. I agree with Randy Jacksons commentary. At the end of the day it was the best rendition I've ever witness of this song, I just wish Carol would've gotten a line.

Stella's blush/contour deserves it's own darn reality show. "Thank God I Blushed You". "Contour Takes Time". "Blush Be There". "Don't Stop (Blushing for America)".

Stacey, I guess because there's this belief that there must be drama and competition behind everything lol. It's completely untrue. No person is any less deserving of having their moments to shine and share their gifts. Celine had a moment. Doesn't mean there was any ill intent behind it. Frankly, it shouldn't matter quite so much whether people have "legend" status or not. Yes, it's a lovely acknowledgement of achievement, which is deserved, but should it be used to place people up on a pedestal so high that we stop sharing with other people? No. Strip away titles, money, fame culture etc we're all human beings with the same potential whether it is music or something else.

Can we all just sit back and appreciate Stella's blush. I think it deserves it's own twitter, or she should at least charge it rent. Perhaps that is the source of her Jedi mind tricks.

Re: Divas Live 1998 (62,765) (62,781) by Jenny from South Africa
Celine was not screeching or warbling. She sounded amazing and was just having fun. Aretha was asking the other ladies to join in with her. Celine was not being disrespectful. How often do you get a chance to sing with a legend? (Sorry Bill, I normally love your posts.)

Re: Celine, Patti, Aretha, and all that stuff (62,776) (62,780) by Marissa from USA
I was thinking along those lines too. I was mainly looking at Celine's intention. She does not strike me as an attention w**** who would purposely try to embarrass and upstage anyone. If anything I think maybe she was trying to prove to Aretha that she was worthy of even being on the same stage as her, especially since Celine isn't known as a soulful singer.

Re: Stacey (62,779) by Nikki from usa
Mariah never tried to upstage Aretha. In fact, she didn't ever sing until Aretha cued her to sing. Perhaps, you need to watch that again. Celine also tried to outsing the other 3 during Carole King's song and even sang Carole's part. They were going down the line, you could see Carole about to sing her part before Celine took over. It's about harmonizing as a group, not trying to upstage each other. Everyone seem to get that but Celine. The finale was Aretha's song and she went down the line with everyone and each of them had their moment. At the very end when Aretha was doing her vocalization, Celine chimed in at the last second, trying to sing the last note. The rest of the divas were harmonizing together while Celine tried to outsing everyone and took over other's parts.

Parallels between MC and Riri's career (62,778) by Nikki from usa
It is interesting how they both started racking up #1's and then had a year of releasing music where they struggled to hit the top spot. Mariah's being in '98 with Sweetheart and the two "Believe" songs. I'm aware My All rolled over into '98 and was a #1 hit for her, but then her next LP's releases didn't yield any. Riri had a straight string up until last year when "Seconds" and "Money" didn't hit high enough. Mariah came back in '99 and racked up 2 more and now Riri is trying for that second #1 in a row. Mariah was at 11 years before her fall and that's where Riri is now. A lot of people think she'll beat MC's record, but I really don't. I still think she could get 1 or 2 more, but I think that's where it will end. I see this going one of a few ways. Riri's brand is sexuality with a healthy dose of kink and the younger generation is less interested in that brand when an artist hits their 30's. I think we're already starting to see the effects of that. I see Rihanna becoming a top 10 artist like Ariana and then top 20 when she's in her late 30's. There's also the biological clock every woman hears begin to tick when she hits 30, so her priorities could change. She had a harder time of hitting the top spot, so her label will need to push her on her current momentum now that she's managed to hit it. They need to keep her going at a constant rate until the cash cow has been fully milked. That's draining in and of itself, which is why I think she only has 2-3 years left.

Re: Divas Live '98 (62,777) by Nikki from usa
I gotta back Bill up on that one. The "divas" consisting of MC, Celine, and I can't even remember the third one were all a parody on Saturday Night Live by their cast. That's a show depicting live music, which Mariah has done many times, while the rest of the show does funny skits that are made up or based off entertainers. Mariah's parody was her hot body - "I"m keeping an eye on my figure and so is every heterosexual male on the planet" was her shtick. Celine's was being "the greatest singer in the world" which she would constantly say and break out into song whenever the other two singers began talking. It was a constant parody that lasted 2 years after Divas Live came out. VH1 did a special on Divas for that year claiming Celine was trying to outsing Aretha on her own song. She was depicted as being very rude.

Re: Celine, Patti, Aretha, and all that stuff (62,760) (62,776) by Stacey from USA
See though, I don't think Celine was trying to out sing anyone. I don't see Celine as that kind of self-serving diva. I've watched the performance of Natural Woman many times. All the divas were singing, then there was a moment to the end where Celine stepped in front and wailed a few riffs. The rest of the song showcased all the divas doing their thing. I don't see Celine ignoring her "place", trying to upstage Aretha. She had a moment and sang. Other divas had their moments. I just don't see the problem. Celine has always shown great respect and admiration for other artists that paved the way for her. Celine has had an amazing career. Why is it such an issue for her to have a moment? I just don't get "it", apparently, lol.

Re: Interesting article (62,764) (62,775) by RibbonB from USA
It seems to be common in Hollywood. I hope Mariah steers clear. For her and her kids sake. This is all a bit much. I read that group discourages members from using the internet. Perhaps that's why M has let others take over her social media. That in itself is not uncommon, but a preteen should not tweet for a singing legend.

I don't see Mariah joining that cult. If anything this will cause problems because Mariah is a Christian.
