Mariah Update (61,493)
by Mimi L. from Empower Your Highlighter
| |
|
|
So Mariah attended the launch party of her Vodka (ya Vodka) at the VIP room in Paris looking very 2006-2008 Mariah like in this. Another picture from the night is this. Somehow she looks gorgeous even with the dark makeup here, maybe since they didn't pair it with the awful contour. So yes finally Kris got it right. She has finally stepped up her shoe game. For someone like Mariah whose shoe collection can rival any store and then some, she used to mostly pick the most boring shows. Here is a picture that surfaced from the party and is what looks like the ad for the Vodka. No official photos have come out yet.

Mariah Carey Essence Fest 2016 (61,491)
by AJJones from United States

|

Is anyone planning on attending her first Louisiana concert date? I am thinking she will probably do the SSFT set there in New Orleans. Is any one planning on going and thinking of doing a meet up? Any idea if there will be ways to Meet Mariah or wait for her during her stay for Essence?

Hero played at school (61,490)

I'm sitting bored as f**** at my nephew's school concert. When I hear Mariah's Hero being played and these kids sang the hell out of Hero. That's why she's a legend.

Well, it's just an opinion. I thought Emotions had rich, soaring vocals and Merry Christmas had outrageously heavenly tone, but Daydream, in my opinion, showed Mariah having more restraint on her vocals and that's why I said Daydream was the best.

If Prince likes it, then I like it (61,488)
by Tiina from Finland
| |

I am shocked and heartbroken. I love Prince. I saw him live back in 2011 with my father. It was the most amazing live show I've ever seen, or will ever see, I'm sure. I even framed my ticket. The air felt electrified that night. Prince had crazy charisma on stage. He was like James Brown and Jimi Hendrix rolled into one. He played overtime until the they switched the lights on. I actually cried afterwords it was that good. What a pioneer, what a legend. His music will live on.

I feel like if all of my idols are passing away. Bowie, Michael, Amy, Whitney. I know that's how life is but I grew up listening to many of them and I still do so it's a weird and sad feeling. I hope Tina and Aretha live many years more because along with Mariah, they complete my "idols list", the alive ones at least.

Whoa whoa whoa. Daydream is her best career vocals? In terms of the related tour, absolutely. Studio wise, it doesn't come close to Emotions or Merry Christmas.

I agree to an extent as there are songs like Babydoll that I would skip. But albums, like all art is so subjective. In my case, E=MC2 is her most enjoyable album and to date her only one where I don't skip a track or two.

Another one of the greats will no longer walk this earth or bless us with their talents. But at least we'll always have his music to comfort us and bring us joy. Even today Prince's songs are what will get us through. We are all here on borrowed time. It's a reminder of how lucky we are to still have MC. RIP Prince. We will remember you.

Re: MIAMTEC vs Butterfly (61,433) (61,477)
by Andrew from UK

Dearest Edward, thou art wise and fair. Butterfly is from the days of constructed albums of around ten to twelve songs, where there was seemingly a beginning, a middle and an end. MIAM follows in the trend since Emancipation of having too many songs and being a little convoluted (the latter halves of TEOM and E=MC2 could have been cut, along with most of Memoirs, simply because it's boring). On MIAM, vocals are arid in parts and strained in others (the ending of "Cry." almost ruins the song), there are lyrics lazily lifted from a decade before even sounding sung with fatigue ("You make me feeyul. Baby, we were the best"), cut-and-paste vocals which make parts incomprehensible and too uncomfortable to enjoy ("Heavenly"), vocal engineering that makes Mariah sound like a completely different person ("One More Try"), production so over complicated in places it's tiresome, and two of the worst songs ever recorded ("Thirsty" and "Supernatural"). Without even mentioning the cringeworthy title and embarrassingly overphotoshopped cover art, the album has genuine moments of genius and overall is good. However, Butterfly was fresh and exciting and is classic whereas MIAM is rehashed Mariah, sequenced slightly differently. She desperately needs to move on musically with her next project. She probably has one more opportunity to impact heavily and her recent activities suggest she may be moving towards that. She would be a fool to waste it.

Butterfly has no filler. Each song is strong and could stand on its own. MIAM is not a continuation of Butterfly. The songs on MIAM represent different eras in her career. Cry. is a throwback to her debut album, Dedicated is a throwback to the Fantasy Bad Boy remix featuring ODB, and Make It Look Good is a throwback to Now That I Know and I've Been Thinking About You from Music Box. I'm glad that TAOLG wasn't included on the album. Cry., Dedicated, #Beatiful, MILG, Camofloge [sic], and Meteorite are the best songs on the album. Thirsty, One More Try, and Heavenly are filler, classy well sung filler, but still filler.

Butterfly vs MIAM (61,474)
by Gilles from Malta

I love MIAM for me it is one of her best work for long time. Regarding Butterfly it is a very good album as well, but it is difficult to compare an album from 1997 vs 2014. On the other hand I would say that Butterfly's lyrics are very good compare to MIAM, I mean more mature, more poetic with a lot of metaphors. MIAM is so good for my ears even the lyrics are not bad compare to E=MC2 and Memoirs Of An Imperfect Angel (I am not saying there are bad, I am just saying different, I am not a real big fan of The Dream collaboration and other produced stuff, I prefer a voice and the music). I would say we are really lucky cause each album are different with another area. I am very happy that she did change after Daydream and Music Box cause it was sounding the same. Have a nice day everybody.

Butterfly definitely edges out MIAM. For me, it depends on which aspect of the album we focus on. For the vocals, Daydream is the best of her career imo. Lyrically, I thought Butterfly is her best, however melodically, Daydream and MIAM slightly beats Butterfly in my opinion, although Butterfly gives a more remarkable imprint sonically as it is raw and more original. As a vocalist, imo Daydream is her magnum opus. But as an artist, Butterfly deserves that title. MIAM doesn't measure up to those albums as the production falls short of the subtle, graceful production value of Butterfly and Daydream, the vocals lack the effortlessness of Daydream, the sound not as uplifting as TEOM, nor it is as raw as Butterfly neither it is as graceful as Daydream and it is not as consistent (there were great songs, but some of them just failed to resonate). However, MIAM will always hold a special place in my heart as the album that shows Mariah's strength and perserverance despite the problems surrounding her.

True. She did tread the same paths with MIAMTEC as she was going through the same stuff. However, with Butterfly, she was in a more poetic state of mind. With MIAMTEC, the lyrics are more true to life, more deliberately descriptive. And while Butterfly can very well seem like a concept album due to its effortless flow, MIAMTEC's incoherent sound, to be fair, is largely due to the circumstances leading to its release. The body of work was 5 years in the making, and during that time, Mariah became a mom, did and left Idol, was in an accident, struggled a lot with her former record label, was having marital problems, etc. There was a lot of ground to cover. Not willing to leave any of those issues unaddressed and un-discussed, she decided to just include a song inspired by each experience in the album, making it sound disjointed but still tied together by this dark, depressing undertone that doesn't necessarily reveal itself through the production or the lyrics - you just know its mostly sad. So MIAMTEC sounding overlong isn't really due to the inclusion of sub-par material. She just had too much to talk about and tried to please every type of fan she had. But its gems (Cry., Faded, Dedicated, #B, MILG, YDKWTD, Meteorite) are undeniably up there with her best work.
