LA Reid (60,185)
by Giovanni from USA

I said it once and I'll say it again, I do not like nor trust the man what so ever. I hope Mariah is careful who she shares her music and ideas with. As well as taking control of how she wants things done. When I was younger I had no idea it was the label who picked the singles from an artist's album. Stella has done a good job repairing Mariah's image and having her booked for numerous events. I will say that. Vegas was a success and worked out in the long run so I'm happy. I just hope Stella will have Mariah everywhere promoting her next album. I think once Mariah is done with her Sweet Sweet Fantasy tour she'll be gearing up for the next era. I predict a single soon.

J.Lo (60,184)
by Andrew from UK

I always thought "I don't know her" was Mariah gritting her teeth and telling the interviewer to not try to use her for ratings. I thought it was a sleight against the interviewer not Lopez. I never took it as "who dat?" because she would have just said, "Who dat?" Isn't this J.Lo thing more about fans stoking up the fires rather than Mariah stoking them up? Anyway, the best revenge is always success. Having been in musical obscurity for 8 or so years, Mariah should come back with a critically lauded album and a couple of hit songs: YDKWTD was a missed opportunity - imagine that now with a decent rapper on it. Anyway, Giovanni's already heard the new songs and is currently planning the PR and launch party. Oh, to be in some of your heads. Peace out.

Don't you hope that Mariah has too much class for some shitty book about her life which people only read for sections that "tell-all"?

Billy I've thought that before and completely agree with you that Mimi would have sounded closer to what was started on some Charmbracelet tracks such as Subtle Invitation, live instrumentation and an old school 70s vibe. I like Makin' It Last better than the three bonus tracks you mentioned, however I love many of the other tracks that remained on Mimi and gave it it's overall sound such as Circles, Mine Again, Your Girl, etc. It's almost like half and half between these songs on the second half and the first half with the hits and more contemporary sound. Ok I'm about to listen to Mimi lol.

All isn't gold that glitters (60,180)
by Edward from USA

Why does everything have to be some sort of conspiracy? It is borderline ridiculous and paranoid. Jennifer worked first with Benny, then Mariah worked with Benny, yet I don't remember anybody saying that Mariah stole him from Jennifer or that Jennifer shouldn't work with him again because he was working with Mariah. If you read the chapter about Mariah in Damizza's book (she authorized it, just in case), you would realize how wicked and paranoid Tommy was at that point in time. He orchestrated Jennifer's career, he had access to whatever Mariah was working on, he most likely is guilty of everything that went on during that time and Jennifer as a new artist got caught up in the mess. Jennifer's image was basically a vivid copy of Mariah's at the beginning, but later on she got her own style that has nothing to do with Mariah's. Mariah and Jennifer are gorgeous women. Jennifer signed with Epic, so what? It doesn't mean anything other than business. Epic doesn't belong to any particular artist. Neither Mariah nor Jennifer is or will be the main artist of that label. They are past their prime. They could definitely have future successful albums, but that would be it. Meghan Trainor is the main artist of that label, they'll invest more resources in her because she would be bringing more revenue, it is pure business. When Mariah was hot back in the day, many artists were dropped to put muscle behind her career because it was promising and was bringing the money, it was business. Labels are not investing millions on videos anymore. There's an Oscar winner documentary that was partially filmed with a cellphone, for heaven sake. It is about the concept, the story and the direction. Mariah just needs to put some good non-rushed quality music out there, and we should know this is not the 90's, and that Mariah might sell, but not as before. It will happen to Adele, Rihanna, Meghan, it is life. Nobody stays on top forever. Maybe when some of these current artists are in their 40's, Mariah's daughter will be the one taking over. Nothing stays the same, things keep moving. Mariah and Jennifer are in different places than when they were hot back in the day, they are mothers now. LA Read was instrumental in the success of The Emancipation Of Mimi, but now he's just a goat in the eyes of some just for making a comment that in my opinion took some pressure off Mariah's back to keep producing #1's. I'm not criticizing or telling people what to post or not, but I can't wait for the conversation to be about the music. Just in case, Mariah's areolas must be kept out of the conversation.

I agree with you on many points. But I wouldn't say that her current team isn't good, Mariah's image was so damaged it seemed it had no return at a point, it was awful to go to every one of her videos and seeing people making fun of her not being able to sing anymore and seeing the horrible headlines every time her name appeared in a news paper or gossip magazine. I think it wasn't easy task to fix Mariah's reputation, definitely I believe her Vegas show did help a fair amount though. I totally think that someone from the music industry needs to be in the team, after all, Stella is just a manager, she gets her to go to places and interviews but that's about it, then again Jermaine is from the industry and he alone didn't do much neither. I think a team requires all sorts of experts. I felt "Infinity" had a catchy chorus but except for a casual listening it wasn't a blast, the remix was awful, it could have been great just only with her and Justin, but that Montana ruined it for every body. And the video kinda let me down.

Duet (60,178)
by Mimi L. from Empower Your Highlighter
| |

I say Mariah just shake off these feud rumors and release 2 stone groove smash hit singles. (1) "I Don't Know Her (Who?)" (featuring J to the Lo and Nicki Minaj). She can sample SIO by using the intro "Hoo hoo hoo hoo" as "Who who who". (2) "Hasn't been popular since seventh grade (I hope they achieve longevity)" (featuring Madonna and Ariana Grande). We'll have the 2 additional number 1s to tie The Beatles.

JLo (60,176)

I don't like the idea of her being in the same building with Mariah, talk less of using the same studios for recording, recording engineers and so on. There's just something off about Jennifer Lopez I can't quite place my finger on in a negative way. She seems to copy Mariah in a very disturbing almost stalker like way, in almost everything she does and to think she's gonna have access to Mariah being label mates now is mind boggling. And then there's the other factors. Her song thieving ways. (Remember how closely guarded The Emancipation Of Mimi was? JLo was the main reason.) Her twisted manager Benny. If I were Mariah I would feel betrayed by LA.

JLo and la Reid worked together before on #LOVE ''On The Floor' Island Def Jam. Mariah will be fine. She, and Reid are good friends. Oh and Mariah is a legendary artist on Epic but make no mistake Meghan Trainor (s/p) is their #1 artist on that label now. (I'm no fan of hers either.) Carry on. Side note. I'm happy Mariah is doing the Essence Festival (should of happened back in 05 though) But, I just hope she brings it and also for the love of God. Please Mariah don't do any of your same ole' classics. This is a urban festival you're allowed to do some fan favorites '4th Of July, The Roof, HATEU. Only "classic" I want to hear is Make It Happen (Live 8/GMA version). I'll even take ABMB leave Hero, VOL, Fantasy out. PS I still hate her hair, blonde straight ages her and I got my ever lasting life when she showed up in Vegas wearing her glazed donut pantyhose with that silver dress. How 1992 Mariah.

I agree with you Lee TS. I have always thought Mariah's new team is not as great as some like to believe. So far the only thing we got from the team is people to stop hating on MC as much but it is still not in the level of like Bieber (who people used to hate passionately but now all they can talk about is how amazing his new album is and all that, his management did great). I have mentioned it before, Mariah needs a strong team who is from the music industry and her current team is not really from this industry. Stella and Brian (is that the name, I forgot) are TV producers. They are good with mediocre reality TV shows like Paris Hiltons' My BFF, which was a washed up attempt especially after the success of "The Simple Life". Everyone was so hyped up and pumping during the release of "Infinity" talking about how the roll out was awesome, but was it? Yes the album cover (1 to Infinity) reveal was a little eventful, but that's it. The single release was messy. Like we were supposed to get video plus music on the same day, instead we ended up getting a cheap lyric video. The video didn't happen for weeks. In addition to Stella not being very powerful in the music industry, we have LA Reid, who is doing Lord knows what. I mean to choose "Infinity" (which is cute and all but not the greatest) as Mariah's comeback single and hype it up as the new WBT was misleading and backfired. I don't know how capable he was during TEOM, but he is a mess now. If this continues, her move to Epic won't really have the impact on her career that she thought would happen. Def Jam at least tried with her. People bring up how Def Jam basically ruined MIAM's chances but we can't really blame them only. Mariah announced way ahead before the album release that she is moving to Epic. (She didn't announce, she gave a huge hint.) Which may have caused DJ to be less motivated to promote her and instead focus on their other artists. Plus Mariah kept pushing the album release and by that time other artists on their roster were ready to release their material. So ya. Anyways, all in all Mariah's current team is messy and like you said the only achievements they have had are by milking off her brand name.

"Makin' It Last All Night (What It Do)" / "Mimi" (60,164)
by Billy from Greece
| |
|
|
Now, that's a song that I have completely forgotten about (most of the times I prefer to listen to the standard edition of "Mimi"). It just popped in my head out of the blue the other day and then I realized I haven't listened to it in ages (a rarity for a Mariah track). I enjoyed it when it came out, now I find it a bit dispensable, though I like that it is "vibey" and all (I particularly like the stacked vocals on the "tonight I need your body etc" part). I prefer "Sprung" over it (wow, that's another one I haven't heard in a while) and "Secret Love". Since I'm talking about the "Emancipation" sessions, and considering that the first three tracks/singles were almost last minute additions, can you imagine what the album would sound like if, instead of them, we had "Sprung", "Secret Love" and "When I Feel It"? While I do think that the JD tracks are stronger, I think I see the "vision" of the "Mimi" sound/concept better with the original three tracks, while I find the album would feel more of a continuation of "Charmbracelet" (in a good way), more "artsy" maybe, live sounding and experimental. All great tracks notwithstanding.

Here's my take on this. Mariah and JLo are now with Epic Records. They both are 45 years old. To sit here and think Mariah is bothered by the facets of JLo's career? Definitely not. For a woman constantly following Mariah Carey around, she actually poses no real threat to Mariah. Mariah is music royalty and will never be knocked down. People will always remember Mariah past her death like MJ and Whitney. Jennifer Lopez, maybe her influence will reach well into the Latino/Latina and some urban communities but for the next 50-100 years, definitely not in the same category as Mariah. JLo came out when music was still selling and she has only sold 12.5 million albums in the USA to date. Very sad. Mariah and JLo might be the same age but people already do what JLo does. Mariah's talent is completely special and appreciated by all demographics. JLo's booty is something different. Mariah should not be expected to adjust down to JLo's status for the sake of her career. The only issue I see with this is to see how Mariah Carey currently feels about her divorce in 1997 and how her power struggles with Sony during that time affects her now. Will Tommy's attempt to try and sabotage her career (Firecracker sample) during those years still cause envy out of hate or has Mariah let bygones be bygones? That's my only concern. She is currently with Sony and Jennifer signing could break the trust Mariah has with LA Reid and Sony. If Sony and LA Reid approach Mariah and physically say that JLo's singning won't affect Mariah's business relationship with them, then Mariah will be fine. If not, look for Mariah to be pissed with envy.

JLo and Mariah both on Epic? (60,162)
by Natalia from Italy
| |
|

I have to say that is totally f*cked up to say the least. I am pretty sure Mimi was pretty pissed about it when she found out. JLo is so over rated it's not even funny. So she has a fat booty, so what? The woman can barely carry a proper tune. MC needs to be very careful who she trusts with her new music. We might just have another little music thief incident. Especially now that they work for the same label. I don't have a good feeling about this at all.

You know I love you Mimi, but if we can be honest like lamb kitchen table talk, there's one thing I'm sorta worried about. You've brought this up before and I 100% agree. Management. We love Stella but how capable is she in the music business? Don't get me wrong, I love what she's done and is doing for Mariah but it was all based on branding off of Mariah's legendary superstar celebrity status. Remember that one manager Mariah worked with for the Emancipation era? That one guy Benny Medina? I guess just add JD into the mix and JLo got herself a slam dunk. Ok maybe a little bit dramatic. Mariah needs to be on her Glitter grind, ok well maybe not that extreme but let's work. She probably is anyways behind the scenes. Let's hope for more pow and pip moments coming soon.

I think the music industry is a business and JLo singed a record deal. There are only so many labels out there. Will JLo and MC be BFF's? Probably not. I wasn't suggesting that, so I'm not sure why the rolling eyes emoticon was needed. My point is, the general public, and the media like to bring up drama and the potential for a diva feud anywhere possible, and I don't think the "issue" is as big as people want to make it. They work in the same industry. This kind of stuff happens. It's not that big a deal. If I offended people with my post, I apologize. I try to see things from all sides. That's just how I am.

I'm sorry, who? Lol no I actually thought it was funny. But this goes to show you JLo knows what's up with her and M. Two big 'ol divas, nothing you can do about it. And about bout Epic and LA, it can either be a genius move or a total disaster. Maybe M would up her game, "Oh no dahling, I'm the HBIC up in here." And come out swinging with the next #1 hot record and while we're at it, throw in Da Brat for a remix addressing some things for the nostalgia.

JLo and Mariah "Epic" showdown (60,158)
by Mimi L. from Empower Your Highlighter
| |
|
|
Well LA signed her so are we now suspecting that LA is trying to sabotage Mariah? Come on you guys. JLo is not exactly hot property right now, she took whatever contract was offered to her. My concern is that Epic is not a strong label to begin with and in my opinion they would focus most of their resources on newer acts (and that too is not being handled well). So to sign two stars who are not exactly new, is a weird move. Like are they so confident that they can give both of them a new comeback? I am concerned that with JLo now being in Epic and her team knowing how to market her well, I hope it doesn't cause the label to take resources away from Mariah. I wasn't exactly happy with MC's move to Epic to begin with and now having JLo on the same boat, it looks like they'll have to fight over the resources. I don't know what LA was thinking. I mean I get it, it's a business and LA has to think about making money more and keep his personal relationship separate but I mean JLo is not exactly selling millions so what exactly made him sign her?
