The Hating Game (59,982) by Edward from USA
At this point if it's not Rihanna, who's always unshadingly praised Mariah, it will be Katy or Taylor. Of course I'm not happy her record is just five #1's away to be broken, but I don't feel any hatred towards Rihanna, nor will I put her down to put Mariah in a pedestal either. She's just hustling like everybody else. Remember many wanted our girl to fail when she was snatching wigs and causing irreversible baldness during the 90's when she was breaking records left and right. The faster we let go of the idea that Mariah is at the same level of popularity as the ones mentioned above, the happier and accepting we will be. I'm not a fan of Rihanna's nor do I think she's at Mariah's caliber, but she's definitely producing catchy music and videos people obviously like, let me make clear I never said she was producing quality music. Let's not count Rihanna out just like they did with our Mariah. We all saw this coming, but we were in denial. It actually took more time than expected, since Rihanna would've released three albums by now but instead she decided to go on a well-deserved vacation. I'm happy Mariah came out when concept albums were still around. Thanks to that we can sit here 20 years later and give a whole listen to Daydream or Butterfly without skipping any tracks. Mariah has an artistic body of work, but most current singers just have forgettable singles of the moment instead. I do listen to some Rihanna's songs at the gym, but that's it. Will I ever sit down to listen to any of her albums from beginning to end like I do any of Mariah's or Alanis'? I doubt it. One million downloads of Rihanna's album Anti were bought and gifted to fans by Samsung, but those downloads didn't count towards her position on Billboard Hot 200 albums, so she didn't cheat charts. If Mariah really wants to maintain a certain level of popularity as she once said, she's going have to up her game with decent concept videos and songs or it would be a big wrap for her. I stopped stressing about Mariah's voice, #1's, OSD 16 weeks record, and I think I appreciate her more for what she really is, a damn good singer, lyricist, and producer. Rihanna could have 30 #1's, but I'm pretty sure she won't ever have anything close to Daydream or Butterfly. #1's don't necessarily define artistry, especially nowadays.

Re: Oh yes (59,969) (59,981) by Mimi L. from Empower Your Highlighter
Justin Bieber is pretty good though. His new album is fire. MC clearly likes him too to allow him to duet on one of her most popular songs worldwide (AIWFCIY). When Justin approached Mariah for his "Mistletoe" album, they were supposed to do a new song together. But Mariah told him she'd like him to re-record AIWFCIY with her. Which is a pretty big deal because Mariah doesn't permit a lot of covers of her material.

Access Hollywood (59,980) by Mimi L. from Empower Your Highlighter
Mariah apparently told AH that although she will take time perfecting her next album, we can expect at least another single very soon. This woman is such a tease and she has already got me hyped. I hope this soon means soon though and not like the "soon" we got when she said MIAM will be released soon, or the video of "Why You Mad" haha which never saw the light of the day. MC stop teasing and give us the date. I hope the promo plan is on point this time. I want this single to burn up Billboard.

Re: New single (59,972) (59,979) by May from Denmark
I love that she takes very seriously making an album and works hard but I hope it won't take 10 years to be ready. The long wait for the last one was enough for me, over all with all the date changes and such. I wonder what kind of single she is putting together. After Infinity I can think of a million things that she can release being much better. If it's for summer do you think it will be an up-tempo jam, something to hit the club?. Ballads seems to be doing a come back, little by little but I would be surprised if she released such a thing. Can't wait to hear new material though, I bet she is really inspired.

I have to speak on counting MC out (59,976) by Randy from USA
Now you all know, I am the first one to criticize MCs live performances and the status of her voice post 1998. But let me be clear. Don't let a couple of flops fool you. When MC is on with her music she makes history honey, not just garners #1s. She doesn't need to chase a musical trend, changer her image her wardrobe or anything. As proven before, when MC has a scorcher on her hands, the game is over. Lip syncing and all. Remember when WBT went to #1? Her response was pretty much, "Why is everyone surprised?" I am telling you this now. Wendy Williams can say what she wants, MC has hits left in her, it's whether or not she is focused on that, or making the music she loves.

Hey enwar00. I can only speak from my heart, but I'm glad you love "Work" and feel there is room for all music on the charts without begrudging anyone's success. So, cheers to her.

MC viral performance (59,973) by Todd from Melbourne, Australia
So today in my timehop app, Lady Gaga's Sound Of Music performance at the Oscars popped up as one year ago. Got me thinking - it would be fantastic for Mariah to do something this prolific. Singing a tribute to something/someone, no frills - just her and an orchestra. Nobody helping her to walk (if you can't walk unaided, wear sneakers), no ear piece dramas, no dress so constricting that she can't move - just Mariah lending her fantastic voice to something that everybody knows and adores.

Mariah said in an interview she's going to take time perfecting her next album but a new single will be soon. I hope they make it count.

Re: It is possible Ri could tie or break MC's record (59,962) (59,971) by Marissa from USA
I'm with you Deedre. I do not have the will to care about something more than Mariah does. Of course, I don't want anyone to surpass her but we shouldn't be the ones obsessing, she should. It's her career. All of this "I don't know what you're talking about because I've been so absorbed in my music" bullshit she does needs to stop unless she wants someone to dethrone her. She can't afford to be unaware anymore. The lambily is constantly on red alert about #1s, but our fear is insignificant if she doesn't hit the studio quick. If she gives a damn about this 18 #1's marketing ploy as much as she acts like she does she better depart Planet Mariah, land on Earth and recognize that records are getting easier and easier to break.

Rihanna (59,970) by Giovanni from USA
Mariah isn't worried about Rihanna. She's the superior artist and singer who is the best talent there is today. Rihanna will never come close to her artistry or musicianship. Surely Mariah can score more number ones and surpass The Beatles record. All she needs is great music, good videos and promotion. Legends like her have to work extra hard to be successful in this industry. But she can if she delivers good musically and promotes.

You've got to be kidding. Out of all the artists Mariah could collaborate with you choose Justin Bieber. I can't.

Is this the new Rihanna Archives message board? (59,968) by Natalia from Italy
I'm so sick of this topic of Rihanna. Can we please move on? So she got another #1, so what? There is nothing we can do about it. It seems pointless, all this obsessing and worrying if she will get more number ones and beat MC's record. If not her, I sure someone else will beat Mimi's records one day. Records are meant to be broken. Everyone here needs just chill out. It's getting very annoying coming here everyday reading about the same topic.

European tour and care (59,967) by AnKo from Germany
I am really looking forward to see her in March. I don't care what she will be singing or how. It has been 13 years since I saw her. So, who cares? I don't care if she is or will be #1. I don't care about her looks, who she is with or who says what about her. In my opinion Mariah Carey is one the most talented artists in the past 25 years of show business. She is a loving and caring person. What I care about is her music. And that is gold. Just saying.

Re: It is possible Ri could tie or break MC's record (59,962) (59,966) by Travon..SweetSweetFantasy from USA
That's exactly how I feel. This obsession and people being upset over it to this degree is nonsense. We all knew Rihanna was going to get to 14. She actually got to #1 way later than I thought she would, over 4 years since 2012s Diamonds. I think everyone feels Mariah is threatened by this. I can guarantee you Mariah doesn't care because she has the full artistry. Mariah knows she's famous for her music not just her #1s. By us saying Mariah should feel threatened that Rihanna is close, we are basically undervaluing who Mariah Carey is as a true artist and think Mariah is only famous because of her number ones. If I was Mariah, I would feel insulted that all my fans think of me that way. Mariah is not known for just her #1s. If Rihanna ties her or passes her, they will just change the marketing to: Mariah Carey; executive producer, singer/songwriter with 18#1s and over 200 million albums sold. She is the most successful female recording artist in the history of recorded music with 2 diamond albums and 8 other albums with sales of at least 3 million copies each in the United States. It's not that deep guys. Good grief.

Work (59,965) by enwar00 from usa
So much negativity and hate on here again. Cry me a river. What happened to "be nice or leave?" Does that only apply to Mariah, otherwise it's ok to be rude? Is it that hard to believe people simply are liking Work and therefore are streaming and downloading it? I love it and I'm glad it's #1.

Re: Ease for new generation / 14th number 1 (59,961) (59,964) by Deedre aka MiTodoChop @HBF from Canada
Great points Bill. Very true. People would complain though if MC made a deal with Samsung, just as I am sure there are some people upset that this deal contributed to Rihanna's success. It is acceptable right now, as part of the industry.

It is possible Ri could tie or break MC's record (59,962) by Deedre aka MiTodoChop @HBF from Canada
But I just don't see the point in worrying about it to the point of obsession. Mariah doesn't have control over which records do well and which do not. Neither does Ri. Mariah doesn't even always have control over which records are allowed to become singles. Yes, obviously artists want to do well, but the way the mood of the board is going it's like Mariah should "buy" a number one record so that there is nothing to "threaten" her. Mariah is my favorite artist ever, but I just don't buy into that way of thinking. Worrying and stressing over something not wanted before it has even happened is like inviting it to come to pass. Yes, it "could" happen, but it hasn't yet, so why put the cart before the horse? If/when it happens then someone broke a record just like Mariah did. I know that the way numbers are calculated are different today and that Ri "gave away" her single. But, it's not like anything can be done about that right? Except for make noise as music lovers about the way singles are counted today.

Re: Ease for new generation / 14th number 1 (59,960) (59,961) by Bill from the UK
But this is the time we are living in. If Mariah did something similar and tied up her new album with Samsung and it rocketed to the top of the charts, nobody here would be complaining. Equally if Mariah's next single featured Drake and as a consequence scored her 19th number one, we'd be celebrating and not saying she is "manipulating" the charts. Mariah's record will at some point be broken, either by Rihanna or another artist, just as she broke Elvis' record. Let's not be bitter and baying for Rihanna's blood because she is successful, just as Mariah was during the 90s. So long as Mariah continues to make great music and is happy in her life, then that's it for me. She made her mark in history, she has absolutely nothing to prove and she should never feel threatened by anybody. Her talent is completely unmatched and there will never be another Mariah Carey.

Re: Ease for new generation / 14th number 1 (59,944) (59,960) by B from USA
The only Mariah single I ever saw or bought that was discounted was Loverboy. I paid $13 for the maxi singles of TGIFY and My All/Breakdown. The only other single I've heard was discounted was Heartbreaker but the video was in heavy rotation on MTV, VH1, and BET and it was being played every hour on the hour on radio. It didn't need to be discounted to reach #1 on the Hot 100. Rhianna's career is slowing down. Her song charted because of her Samsung deal. Her album and singles sales shouldn't count because of said deal. It's cheating and manipulating the charts. Her Navy is swindling. She's going through what GaGa went through with Artpop. Talent always rises to the top and Mariah's talent is undeniable.

Re: Seriously guys? (59,948) (59,959) by Travon..SweetSweetFantasy from USA
"She's resorting to attaching herself to other artists for hype. Her last body of work didn't score any #1's, which was odd for her. Her label had to have another corporation buy downloads to give away for free to grab attention and headlines." Which universe are you from? Please tell me you are not talking about Mariah? If you are, receipts please. I hate it when opinions or perceived lies are passed along as facts. At least type better and clarify who you are talking about. Lady Gaga and Katy Perry came to Mariah's residency as fans of Mariah and Beyonce was at a charity event Mariah was at, as well. How is that attaching? Do you have proof that the label sold her songs to corporations? Maybe you meant the gift of giving away AIWFCIY for a brief time, a 21 year old song that still sells yearly; despite the giving. If I remember correctly, the general public made #beautiful go platinum in less than 3 months and chart at #15 on the Billboard Hot 100. Now if you meant Rihanna, then maybe your facts are off. She had a #1 on her last album. Have a great day. [Webmaster: It's clear Nikki was talking about Rihanna and not Mariah. Rihanna gave away her album to Samsung customers.]

Having a typical emotional upset (59,958) by Musti from UK
It's a sad day. I really hoped Work wouldn't hit #1. I'm happy for Rihanna, but not as much as I'm upset about Mariah's record being threatened. Before the name calling begins, I just want to say that I don't think any of us here have stuck with Mariah solely based on her #1's and other achievements. I love the music, but like most of us I'm also very proud of her 18 #1's. And so is she. I won't lie, I still want her to beat The Beatles. And I definitely don't want Rihanna or anyone else anywhere near her record. I agree with Mimi L that it's all about going viral these days. Mariah has the talent and the charisma to pull it off. I expect good things from her new relationship with Sony. I think neither Mariah nor Sony would've taken this step unless they both mean business. Of course I will always be here whatever she does. But can I still wish for sweet #19-20-21?

Oh yes (59,957) by radhames from Curacao
If it's me you responded, I never said that she needs to do a duet with Justin or with Rihanna to achieve a hit. I just said it would be nice to hear them sing something together and going to #1. But I doubt that Mariah will ever do that. She never needed anyone to make dem hits, but yeah, anyway. I still love her and I know my queen will have another solo number 1. Often imitated, never duplicated.
