Daydream (57,013)
by Todd from Sydney, Australia
| |
|
|
I remember Daydream, it was one of the first CD's I ever owned. I remember asking for it for Christmas. My dad didn't so much like his son asking for a MC album, and instead, got me History by Michael Jackson. So disappointed. Santa really gypped me. But the joke was on him. I saved up and bought it myself.

Ode to Daydream (57,012)
by Lee TS from USA

Since we are all sharing Daydream stories I guess I will put in my little memory. Like Mariah says we never reveal a number dahling but I'm currently at my Rainbow age, the earlier part of that era if you catch my drift. So yeah, I remember as a young boy whenever the family would get together for family functions at my uncle's, I would always run to my older cousin's room to find Mariah's album and I would pop it into cd stereo and play it on a loop. All my other cousins would be playing video games and rough housing and I would be the only little boy listening to Mariah. I would follow all the lyrics and try my best to understand. I still remember thinking there were two singers in UTS because I didn't know or think she was capable of singing the breathy vocals in the beginning. I always thought it was a backup singer. I still remember being touched when she sang about sailing together and drifting apart in Open Arms, I thought it was so deep. I would always skip Looking In because the melody was so haunting that it scared me. Oh I felt the same way about Melt Away as I did UTS, I always thought it was a dude singing the first verse haha. I think Fantasy was my favorite because it was so fun and innocent. And the video was so festive, I thought she was so pretty and I was really into rollerblading back then. Daydream will always be my favorite because that was when I fell in love with her. But I think Butterfly was the first MC album I bought on my own, and I started with the cassette first. I still remember hearing her talk for the first time in the Butterfly interviews, I was so shocked and thought she sounded like a man. But the very first time I recall hearing Mariah was when a group of girls danced to Fantasy in the school auditorium. Anyway, Daydream is perfection I don't think she can ever recreate or capture that again.

Edward, I agree Daydream is Mariah's magnum opus. It's the perfect blend of her doing what she does best which is writing timeless Popish R&B songs. Mariah has written countless amazing songs and she wrote the majority of her lyrics during the first 9 years of her career with the exception of covers. Read the album liner notes. She's credited as the lyric writer of all of her best songs. She seems to do best when she does what she loves and what the label wants. Write catchy smartly written timeless songs. Doing so is an art form that Mariah is a master. She's the most successful female songwriter and producer and singer. Mariah is the queen.

Daydream was the first album I ever owned. The first CD single I ever bought was Fantasy. Daydream was Mariah mania. She was young and in her prime and she released one of the best albums of all time with countless classic songs and singles that spent 6 months at #1 on Billboards Hot 100 chart. One Sweet Day spent sixteen weeks at #1 on the same chart and was the Song of the Decade. It's amazing that exactly ten years later she released another amazing album that's second single We Belong Together spent fourteen weeks at number one and became the Song of the Decade that is only second to One Sweet Day. Mariah is a phoenix. She wil rise from the ashes like a bird of paradise looking stunning with an amazing song and video that reminds people who the hell she is the legendary stunning elusive Chanteuse who is ready to make another declaration of independence.

Happy 20th Daydream. It is a tremendous album and a real highlight in her career. I was almost 12 and had started secondary school. I was at the peak of my love for MC, and I remember being disappointed that I'd have to wait a week for my birthday before I could hear the album. The day of its release, I walked home from school to find that my lovely mum had got it for me as an early birthday present and it was taped to the porch door so I would see it as I headed down the path. I have never ran so fast in my life haha. I was ecstatic and overwhelmed to have it before my birthday. I played it non-stop for the rest of the year. Literally the only album and music I would listen to. It captivated me on first listen, and still does twenty years and thousands and thousands of spins later.

I want to know who posts the images on Mariah's social media (the flashback photos) and why they insist on putting up the hazy variety when hi-resolution varieties are available online and ever so neatly compiled chronologically in The Mariah Network page.

Nice tribute to Daydream Edward. Your tape flipping excerpt made me laugh. I hated math in school, so I tried to make math assignments more tolerable by making sure Daydream was in my walkman.

Deedre, you cracked me up with your line "I just feel like a constantly evolving version of me". You should definitely get in touch with Mariah's team. I would take your line over her "eternally 12" line anytime. Shit, I'm using it myself. I hope you didn't copyright it.

Stacey, B: a toast to the daydreamers (57,002)
by Edward from USA

Daydream to me is her magnum opus. It is the perfect blend of Pop and R&B. Mariah was young but she was deep with most of her lyrics. The nuances of her voice were beautiful and her delivery was effortless. If you asked me how many times I have listened to "Melt Away", I would tell you a "a million times". I was addicted to Daydream. My mom died back in January 1995 unexpectedly, I isolated myself from everyone, the only thing I had was a "Daydream" cassette that broke with so many plays, rewinding and flip-overs. Her voice, her passion, her delivery, her lyrics, all resonated with me and helped come out of the worst moment I've ever experienced in my life. "Daydream" and "Butterfly" are two masterpieces; they should be in the list of "Albums you must listen to before you die". I have come to terms with the current state of Mariah's voice, but I'm always hoping for the same passion in her lyrics and production. I know what she's capable of, she's shown us time and time again. A toast to "Daydream", Mariah and those who love the album.

I thought of you when Mariah posted about the 20th of Daydream, Stacey. Because you always say it's your favourite album. It's funny I was in highschool when Daydream came out, but I don't feel old. I just feel like a constantly evolving version of me. Lol.

Daydream 20th anniversary (57,000)
by Stacey from USA
| |
|
|
Boy, do I feel old. I was 18 when that album was released. I will be hitting 38 on Sunday, lol. It's still her best album, IMO. She was at her peak during that era. I know, I know, many will say Butterfly was her peak lyrically and vocally. However, songs like Fantasy set up a trend of hip-pop which drastically changed the music industry. We haven't seen another example of that kind of drastic change since. That album had something for everyone. Daydream will always be my #1 album.

No worries, I was mainly addressing the ones desperately trying to paint me as a bully, because I'm one of the few who will always hold them accountable to what they write, and whomever liked their posts. The Madonna discussion was just a very convenient juxtaposition I used to get my point across.

I saw Mariah for the first time during CB tour. When I heard her hit the whistle note after the keyboard player, I was blown away. It sounded like she could communicate with dolphins. She hit the note like nothing and match the timbre. It's like she has a synthesizer in her voice.

Hi B, I've been fine. I hope you're doing great. I still read most posts here on a regular basis. I'm actually looking forward to some new quality music from Mariah, and of course the Christmas shows and movie. Andrew, your post about "Petals" was great, I loved it. I also feel the song is very underrated. That was Mariah lyrically at her finest. I miss those types of lyrics from her. I can only compare it to "Butterfly", my favorite song from her catalog.

Thanks Marcus. You brought up many things I was referencing. I totally get that not everyone is going to like Madonna. I haven't liked everything she's done either, but I'm in no place to judge her for anything. I do respect her for being true to herself despite what others think. I respect her as an artist, and for what she's brought to music. I'm not trying to convince anyone to like her. Lol. I don't even think she meant what she said about Mariah, but whatever lol. I do believe people evolve, and I would certainly hope people wouldn't hold me accountable today for ridiculous comments I made 20 years ago. I feel there's nothing constructive in hating on people. Period. We don't need to.

Oh my gosh yay, thanks for remembering. I love her side (and I usually shy away from writing about those because I see most fans complain about it). Anyways I love a good nude color (which I think it's going to be since it's described as champagne). Plus it's true to what Mariah wears on a regular basis. I do hope they release one more which is a glossy natural pink like the other color she wears. I have always wondered why she doesn't rock a red lip, but she explained in the interview that she thinks it doesn't suit her. I have all the perfumes and my favorites would be M, "Luscious Pink", VOL, "Ribbon", "Mine Again", "That Chick" and "Forever", I love that all her "M" (including the Lollipop collections) are the same design, they look so cute together, all those colorful butterflies. The bottle of "Forever" is classy and art deco inspired, which I love.

Haha aaww B you are making me blush for real. I was talking to a friend on the phone while I was randomly checking her twitter on my laptop and I screamed and my friend got scared. Haha. I am so excited. I mean I know the leather jackets and casual outfits can definitely be coincidences but the MAC collaboration, like please. Can nobody, can nobody tell me this wasn't my doing haha. (I am just kidding by the way.) Haha Mariah is teamed up with Elizabeth Arden for her perfumes and in the middle she kind of endorsed EA's lipsticks and lip gloss through "Infinity" video and then posting a status about it. Now to suddenly collaborate with MAC? I had almost given up hope on it, but Queen of Christmas came through I feel like a kid asking for a gift for Christmas and Mariah blessing me with one haha. So this single lipstick won't have special packaging, but I'm sure the Beauty Icon Collection coming out next year will have special packaging and possibly her signature on it (like they usually do for the limited edition). Fingers crossed for gold packaging, because Mariah is classy and nothing less than gold packaging would do but heck I'll take anything, I am already happy to have this collaboration happen. I also agree about how she should come back and redeem herself this Christmas. Give a killer performance and shut them haters down. (Excuse my childish writing/reaction here, I swear I am more mature haha.)

I love the artdeco 20's inspired Forever bottle. I collect desinger perfume bottles that I buy and her's is the only celeb fragrance to get added to my collection. It's her best smelling perfume in my opinion.
