Mimi L, I'm sorry I missed your post. The post was clearly tongue-in-cheek (partly). I don't feel the need to write 5 extremely sycophantic questions. But, let's give it a go: 1. Do you know how amazing you are? I mean, I think you're amazing, and I love you. But do, like, you know how, like, amazing you are? Please don't think I don't think you're amazing. Or I'll scream and scream until I'm sick. 2. You are a legend. You are the legendest of the legendests. You are the legendest of the legendests of the legendests. O. Mariah. How does it feel to be a legend? 3. I love everything about you. Was there ever a time when you didn't think I loved everything about you? 4. Mariah, your hair is amazing. Can I eat some of it? 5. Will you come to my birthday party? There'll be cake. I will guess that those questions got censored. And perhaps most of this post. However: On a serious note, Mimi L, I don't often respond to people but you can't have thought I would actually ask Mariah those questions. Grandstanding aside. You're "used to" comment is off the mark. I have a different style, different approach and different reality, I suppose. Holier-than-thou comments on this board concerning my posts from people who would rather die than accept and explore Mariah's "faults" (for definite want of a better word) are quite redundant. But I do have some respect for you, actually. So, no, I wouldn't ask her those 5 questions. If I ever met Mariah for that space of time and had a chance for her to hear my voice, I wouldn't waste my time with asking 5 questions designed to make me look like the perfect lamb or kiss her ass. I would use that short time to tell her that, when I was growing up (I am a grown up, I promise you) her music, nay the sound, tone, power, subtlety and resonance of her voice in my earphones at night comforted my soul, and made any hurt and pain go away when I was sad. I would tell her that her upbeat songs made me feel as if the world was inconsequential because I was in ecstasy dancing somewhere in the stratosphere and nothing and nobody mattered for those three to four minutes because she and I couldn't be reached. And I would apologise for becoming so cynical in later life, and being so critical of her, but that I have to choose to put everything in a healthy context, and see her as a music artist (and a mortal, flawed human being) albeit an important one in my life, and, above all things, I want her to be a fucking good one again. I would finish (whilst probably running out of time, and being ushered on, by this point) by saying that, whilst I don't idolise anybody as I don't think it healthy, I love her and will always love her for her contribution to my life and for giving me the insight when I was young, that somewhere on the planet there were people with deep and meaningful souls for whom love, empowerment and beauty were the keystones of life, even if they were not the people around me. And I would tell her that, at the end of my life, after I have said goodbye to all those I have known and loved, I will have her in my heart, for what her voice and music have meant to my life, and know that she will sing me to eternal sleep when the time comes. "Used to"? We don't have cents here in the UK. So that's my 2 pence. Stay well.

Re: Mariah's impact (56,741) (56,743)

LC I agree with your post, Mariah never was and still isn't given enough credit. I would like to add to the part about the Christmas album, you might already know this but still I wanted to add that at the time Mariah made that album, she said she didn't want to do it. That is because she thought it was something people do around the end of their careers not 3 years into their career. But she later agreed and now it has become a staple, so that adds to your post about how people just assume that young artists making a Christmas album is common whereas the queen of Christmas herself was hesitant when making hers because before her, it wasn't such a common practice. She made it popular, she made it look like a profitable venture that if one manages to nail a good holiday anthem, they can live off its royalty for years (unfortunately people were not successful in replicating the success). Now everyone seems to have a Christmas album or EP even before they make it big like Ariana has one, Justin Bieber, Demi, and a lot more I don't even know the names of. It does sadden me that no matter what Mariah does, people always dutifully forget to give her any credit or praise her for it. They just think of her as the big voiced diva when she is so much more than that. Her voice is only one of her many talents/contributions.

Written for Mariah (56,742)
by Billy from England, UK
| |
|
|
Today I was thinking it would be a nice idea if Mariah did an album with songs other artists have written for her to sing, like from really good popular songwriters, she could get more number ones. We all know she can write a song but it would be nice for a change if she let some people write songs for her.

Mariah's impact (56,741)
by LC from USA
| |
|
|
I was thinking about this the other day and it just astounds me. Mariah's impact is literally omnipresent and so ubiquitous that people don't even know that today's music is the way it is because of her. There was a lamb on Twitter who solidified my point by saying something along the lines of "Mariah has such a great impact that people think this is how music always was." And now looking back, that is the complete truth. This 20 year old "trend" of blending hip hop and pop is now just the standard of music. Even to this day, the biggest songs on the charts are songs like "See You Again" and "Dark Horse" and so many more that blend rap and pop music. But while lambs and critics are aware of Fantasy's influence, Mariah isn't really given the credit by the public because the blend just seems so natural now that it seems like music has always been this way. Then there's her style of singing, which are those pretty little intricate runs and then the big voice and high notes that are the standard for which singing is judged today. She made that mainstream so that to this day, the big new "vocalists" of this generation like Ariana Grande, Tori Kelly, Jessie J, even Justin Bieber have cited her as their main influences in how they sing. And also now every mainstream pop singer makes Christmas music in an attempt to replicate the success of Merry Christmas. Yet people assume that making a Christmas album as a young pop star is just the standard thing to do. Mariah really is the blueprint for today's music and it just baffles me when I think about it because the scope of her impact is so boundless and universal that people can't even trace it back to an origin because it feels like that's how music always was. That's real impact, in my opinion.

New picture for the ad. I love it. I like that they kept her body fairly close to her current body so we won't get the photoshop backlash and they kept her face the way it was during the time the photo was taken. It has become smaller now but heck she looks great in any shape. Warrior-Riah is coming for you.

Nicely written Andrew. I think you are right with every you said. IMO the part where she's singing "So many I considered closest to me, turned on a dime and sold me out dutifully" could be about Walter Afanasieff and his falling out with Mariah, when he chose to be on "Tommy Mottolas side" instead of hers. He said something like that once in an interview.

Random: the album Butterfly (56,735)
by Baby from Dreamville...Where There's No Beginning & There is No End
| |
|
|
So this past Monday I was rushing through a mall and suddenly I hear Ouside playing inside an Oasis store. That meant someone had probably played the whole album because it's such an obscure fan favorite. I didn't even have time to really take it in since I was in a hurry and kinda forgot all about it until just now. I need to track down the Lamb who is responsible for playing Butterfly in its anniversary week and seduce him/her into being my friend. I guess this is me manifesting my master plan. Yeah, Lamb-dencity is low in Sweden at least in my experience and to be fair I have fairly high personal standards for who passes. But I have faith in this Oasis person. Pretty random, ey?

Five questions for Mariah (56,734)
by Manny from U.S.
| |
|
|
1. Will you ever release audio of you singing as a little girl? (I think, she mentioned she only has audio, no videos.) 2. What do you look for when you are hiring a backup singer? 3. Would you rather write a book of your life or star in your own movie? 4. Now, that you're a mom, can you still get as much vocal rest as before? 5. Will you perform songs in Spanish, or other languages again?

I was out shopping today, and was in a store playing a radio station. I had to smile when YME came on. This station was current, not one of those clear soft pop music stations. Nice to hear since the single and album get labelled a "flop" so much. I guess I'm an odd fan, I don't consider something a "flop" if it doesn't perform like MB or TEOM. I'm enjoying reading everyone's questions for Mariah.

5 Questions (56,729)
by Will from England
| |
|
|
1) You have achieved so much over the last "12" years, from making music history to acting to products to being a fantastic mother, what else is on the horizon for you? 2) When writing deep songs such as "Petals", "Looking In" and more recently "Camouflage", do you find yourself just stopping and saying "This is too deep, am I comfortable releasing such a personal song?" And has this stopped other songs from being put onto past albums? 3) Referring back to "Camouflage", with such a complex song vocally, how do you decide where to place an ad lib? Because when listening to the song through earphones, you can hear small whispers of ad libs in one or the other ear that are placed perfectly, and I'm intrigued to find out how this process occurs, and when you feel that the song is complete, in terms of these ad libs. 4) With a career that has experienced such great triumphs, naturally there will be some disappointments along the way. Aside from your soundtrack album, what would you say is the one disappointment that stands out. It could be from a single not doing as well as you had hoped to an album being mishandled. 5) The music industry is changing so rapidly in order to keep up with the internet (with streaming services from outside companies etc.), and the shift in interest from album sales to single-song digital sales and online views (YouTube/Vevo), what would you say is more important to highlight, in terms of judging the success of a "modern day music artist": the album sales or the single sales/online views (YouTube/Vevo)? Bonus Question 1: And with that in mind, do you feel it is more difficult for both legendary artists, such as yourself, and newcomers to the industry to get their music heard, appreciated for what it is, and bought? Bonus Question 2: Does music have less substance to it? As in, it's no longer about what the artist is saying, but more about the BPM and the addictiveness of the music?

I was taking a walk back down memory lane watching some clips from "Beverly Hills 90210" (remember, 1990s kids?) and in the school's radio station (where David broadcasts from) there is a poster of the back cover of Mariah's debut album. Aw, sweet. Didn't even remember that.

Petals (56,727)
by Andrew from UK
| |
|
|
Randy, good honest questions. I like your question about Petals. I think about that song as a Mariah staple and think of it often. It's brilliantly understated and dangerously ignored in her catalogue as it reveals so much and suggested a deep desire for closure that obviously didn't transpire. "Dandelion" is the sister MC looked up to as a child only, in adulthood, to learn of her serious failings. "Lil sis and lil brother" are Mottola's children with whom she was close and understood the life they were living. Yet, she had to say goodbye to them when she left Mottola and, most heartbreaking about the song, felt guilty, and powerless to help them, had to leave. "Valentine" is surely about Mottola himself as it flows onto him after his children. "Missed a lot of life" can only be about the many years she spent in their house. "I know you really like to see me suffer, still I wish that you and I'd forgive each other" is quite heartbreakingly honest for Mariah to say that it was a two way street in that they weren't what either person wanted. And finally, "I really loved you" must surely be a plea to remember that they did once love each other and to let bygones be bygones. The whole song is emotionally open and I think the most honest lyric, metaphorical as it is, that she has ever written, with the melody and arrangement like a stream-of-consciousness written as a deeply sad, yet understated, apology. As if asking for an absolution as she had to leave all of them to live her own life. It's almost as if Mariah is singing to herself and not to the audience. I guess most people know all this, but, jokes and criticism aside, genius needs to be labelled as such. "Thunder precedes the sunlight."

1) When you were a kid, what name did you wanted for yourself? 2) You say you're not a diva but the world sees you as that. Name one diva thing that is you do. 3) Honestly, how do you feel about Ariana Grande? Please, no "we love everybody" answers. 4) What happened between you and Nick? 5) You're no longer that 12 year old who shaved off her eyebrows with orange hair. Many think you're a gorgeous woman, but, do you think you're beautiful?
