Re: Empire - Sky Summers (58,208) (58,246)

I haven't been able to tune in to Empire in its entirety, but I happen to have caught this scene where Sky Summers (Alicia Keys) is "called out" by a show host (or an emcee?) for being black only when it is convenient. That struck me as reminiscent of what they used to say about Mariah.

Thanks Andrew. I will definitely share my Beacon experience here. Can't wait for December 14. Last year was a beautiful show. I'm hoping they can somehow build on that and make it even more festive this year. Love to you from across the pond, and joy and peace to all on this message board, especially our webmaster.

Re: Prince spills tea: Billboard Lady Gaga's WOTY fraud (58,228) (58,244)
by Jared from USA

"This explains why she was completely ignored at this years [sic] Billboard Music Awards even though she hadn't honoured them with her presence since 1998. They neglected to give her an award for any of her major chart records since or even just for her legendary longevity to mark her 25th anniversary on the BB charts." Notes from Dreamville, where facts go to die and Mariah should get an award just for showing up. I guess this didn't happen. I only imagined Mariah being honored for having a huge year circa 2005-2006. Let's not be bitter about Billboard naming Gaga WOTY in 2015, payola or not. I'm not exactly fond of Gaga, either, but I don't think it's fair to attack her and diminish her attempts to stay relevant in the entertainment business. As far as I can tell, being named WOTY has nothing to do with chart success. They could have named any female artist WOTY and somehow justified it with a nice editorial piece. Furthermore, making the case that Billboard is now nothing more than a PR machine that can be bought doesn't put Mariah in the best light, either. For years, she rode that PR machine, and a large part of her legendary status rests on her 18 Billboard number 1 singles, among her other Billboard chart achievements. It's like saying only the Beatles and Elvis' charting achievements matter because Billboard has been irrelevant and/or corrupt since 1990 (or insert arbitrary year of your choosing). I remember when Mariah was being lambasted for "manipulating" the charts. To be fair, even before Billboard made their methodologies and formulas transparent, you couldn't blame record companies for trying to figure it out to boost their artists' standing on the charts just for the added promotion. On Billboard's part, it is an industry magazine. If the special interests in the industry have captured it, then it will eventually become so painfully obvious that the general public will move on and staying paying credence to it. Honestly, a Grammy these days doesn't seem like such a big deal now that we don't live in the age of broadcast television. Show me someone with millions of Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram followers and I'll show you a star. Regardless of Mariah's success, whether it be measured in awards and accolades, chart presence, or a vast social media following, I think I would like her. She has a voice that is ear candy to me and many other attributes that are worthy of praise. I'm not worried about other artists stealing her limelight.

Wow for some reason I've never seen that. She's singing so well and her hand movements seem very early 90's haha. It baffles me how her voice goes through stages of being this good and then other days she has troubles. It must be frustrating for her but a major kick-ass moment when she has full control like she does here.

It wasn't the best, was it? I bet Mariah secretly wanted to kill Busta when he made them turn the music down so we could hear her more. Anyway, onwards and upwards. I'm sure we'll get some good performances out of her over the Christmas period too.

This is my favorite song in MCIIY. It's timeless. She looked so beautiful and glamorous in this performance, and sounded lovely. Thanks for posting the link.

Jono, I'm hoping it gets a re-remix with Mariah producing and writing new lyrics like she's done for Oh Santa in A Christmas Melody or her other remixes like I Still Believe with Brat and Krayzie or Joy To The World celebration with David Morales. Any excuse for Can't Let Go to have a second coming tbh. I'm excited.

I agree to the fullest enwar. To my ears? I don't know that Mariah ever sounded more at ease with her voice than in this song. At least when it comes to tone and body. It's like she isn't even trying and yet it's so masterfully done how the musical arrangement and her singing compliment each other. She and Marc Shaiman are magic together.

Absolutely love this fresh spin. How genius is Mariah's melodies? She turned a 1991 pop ballad in to a modern, hiphop/r&b jam. Love that she resang the vocals as well, and the new lyrics fit right in. You know you've had a legendary career when you are sampling your own work.

I love this song and I love this performance. Only a few short years ago. It's unfortunate so much focus and attention is placed on the negative. Just my opinion.

Prince hit the nerve. Billboard never acknowledges Mariah's success and rather give props to artists withe less achievements for some reason. Billboard charts became a business some are willing to follow but I'm happy MC is beyond that.

Well, it doesn't much matter. The ones who are smart enough can research it themselves even without any links to Prince's tweet or the letter of resignation from the Billboard employee. It probably won't change the culture of corruption that the entertainment press is mired in anytime soon but it's a start. At least we know Mariah isn't mixed up in this mess because he always gets the proverbial short end of the stick from most media outlets. This explains why she was completely ignored at this years Billboard Music Awards even though she hadn't honoured them with her presence since 1998. They neglected to give her an award for any of her major chart records since or even just for her legendary longevity to mark her 25th anniversary on the BB charts. JLo got their Icon Award just last year but somehow Mariah is chopped liver? It's all beginning to make sense now. This sucks for the other "legitimate" winners though, I'll say that much. Wonder what other publications have the same bribery culture? I can think of at least one other major industry staple that regularly leaves Mariah out of their lists of Songwriters for no apparent reason other than obvious bias. But you didn't hear it from me.

First off, I can't believe this only has 6 likes (at the time I wrote this, lol). Gem doesn't even begin to describe how awesome this track is. I wish there were studio acapella versions of all her songs. There were so many neat runs and phrases I didn't know existed. You don't notice them over the arrangements.

She didn't attend Jay Z's birthday, I never thought it was for that. It was a private gig for a rich white lady CEO. Mariah looked amazing though, she's getting that body back.

Update from Dreamville: "Dear Diary, today I stringed words together that make no sense to anybody but they do to me and I was given a gold star. Still in here. No chance of escape to the real world. Someday, ooh ooh, someday." This is scary, right? Seriously scary.
