Re: Matty - LP groupings (56,109) by nikki from usa
Just talking about the first group, because I've never known MC to follow anyone's trend. But, I think you're overlooking how her debut encompassed the whole 80's and displayed Mariah's versatility as an artist. I think she was ahead of her time here, because she grouped rock music with rap.
The debut - Featured everything that was at the top of the charts in the 80's. Dance, Pop, Big Voiced R&B, a "we are the world" type anthem, Rap, and Rock music. VOL and Vanishing added MC's own flavor.
Music Box - Forced A/C music and imagery courtesy of Mottola due to the crazy money making Juggernaut that is I'll Be There. MC's Unplugged was only supposed to prove she could sing live and if well received they could make money by releasing an EP. Above and beyond expectations. The people demanded it on radio and had dj's playing it while blowing up MTV for more of her performance. Between the #1 hit single, EP, and live video Sony made millions without having to lift a finger. By contrast, Celine was only known for singing Beauty And The Beast at this time, her hit defining album wasn't released until November in '93.
Rainbow - Again, Destiny's Child only had 1 album out that seemed far more tailored to MC's creation of hip-pop. Rainbow was a lot more hardcore in the hip hop influence and rap department. E=MC2 - I can't see any relation with this to Bey. I'll have to take your word on that one. Although, I find it Mariah's most snooze worthy album. It's like a retarded version of Charmbracelet - she's redoing something she's already done. I think the singing style and musicality of CB is brilliant (*Lullaby* The Roof pt. 2) while E=MC2 was an attempt to get on AC radio IMO.

Ben: Rainbow Charmbracelet (56,108) by Matty from Vancouver Canada
This is what I love about posting on this kind of forum. We individually had almost a completely opposite reaction toward the Rainbow and Charmbracelet albums. The way you describe Charmbraclete would be how I describe Rainbow. I wonder how much our own personal memories and experience during that "Mariah era" effect our nostalgia for our respective album preferences. I would disagree with you, in that I don't believe Mariah started making music she personally loved until after Glitter. I don't think she had the freedom to create her artistic expression until she was done with Sony. She made beautiful and monumental music with Sony, but I don't think it was always what Mariah wanted to do musically. I think Butterfly and Charmbraclete [sic] are Mariah's two albums where she set out to only satisfy herself and no one else. Mariah didn't have time to focus on Rainbow because she wanted to get away from Sony a.s.a.p which is why she only spent 3/4 months recording it start to finish. However, "Rainbow era" is the most fun, chill, carefree Mariah I think we've seen. She was truly loving life as a Butterfly and was the image of pop-perfection. Plus, lest no forget, Bianca came to life (the original Sasha Fierce).

Re: Pregnant vocals (56,107) by nikki from usa
I did a lot of research on that. I have a friend who sings professionally who also said her vocals were crazy amazing while she was pregnant. This turned out to be common place among female singers. When a woman is pregnant her body produces a lot more elasticity to allow her to grow and stretch. This occurs all over, not just her tummy. This creates a lot more elasticity in the vocal chords, possibly bringing back that sound not heard of since their 20's. Also, MC was bed-ridden in a high risk pregnancy which would have caused her to get a lot of sleep. Her insomnia has always been an issue where her vocals are concerned. Ask any professional singer what they sound like on 4 hours of sleep and they'll tell you it's problematic.

I also wanted to say, in reference to how you responded to the Mariah Carey debut album: I wouldn't be the Mariah Carey fan I have been for the past fifteen years if Mariah didn't write or produce her own music (which we all know is why to compare her to Whitney, Britney, Kylie, JLo, Christina Aguilera or Beyonce isn't fair to Mariah's artistry). But again that wasn't what I was doing or talking. I was speak to the vibe, style, sound and trendiness of the music MC created at that time.

B / Re: Three album groupings (56,091) (56,105) by Matty from Vancouver Canada
I think you misunderstood me a bit, I never said Mariah copied anyone, not Whitney, Celine or Beyonce (a musical trend and "copying" are extremely different things, and we all know Mariah has never copied anyone). I was referring to when Mariah panders to the current musical climate of the moment. You're totally correct in your comments such as, Music box being more R&B leaning etc. etc. but that's not what I was referring too. I meant that with those albums, Mariah was indulging what was general pop audience was wanting/buying at the time, but of course she did it in her own Mariah-Carey-way. I'm also not saying this is a negative, and defiantly in no way insulting those albums or saying they are less then any other album. I meant to include Daydream in the listings with Emotion, TEOM & MOAIA. And the Pop Gold verses artist masterpiece with that album would be: Always Be My Baby vs. Looking In. I didn't include Christmas albums because I believe Christmas albums and soundtracks are a lot more specific and directed then a standard album release, and can't be judged in the same context. I 150% agree with what you said about Butterfly, Charbracelet and Me. I Am Mariah.

Speed settings (56,104) by Ardis Logic from Earth
Has anyone ever messed with the speed settings on Windows media player? I took some Mariah songs and changed the speed. Some I turned up some down. It's too much fun.

Cleavage (56,102) by Stella Lewis from USA
Okay Mariah needs to tone it down in terms of what she posts. Have you seen some of her recent instagram/Twitter pics lately? In one of them, she's wearing a skimpy bikini top and her boobs are on full display. She's not in her 20's and 30's, and the pic is rather unflattering in my opinion. It's an open invitation for nasty comments from haters. I just wish she would cover up more often. I love the long black dress that she wore on the day out with James and her kids. None of her cleavage was showing and she looked great.

Re: Pregnant vocals (56,095) (56,101) by darrian liu from taiwan
Abstaining from alcohol helped loads. Alcohol dries out the vocal cords, that's why she sounded so dry during Memoirs and 2014 era. It also made her voice sound cracky (although I personally love it when she has cracks before her belts a la TEOM). Moisture is important for the voice, especially when you have nodules like MC.

Butterfly is poetry in sound (56,100) by Jono from USA
Hey all, I just recently lost someone pretty special in my life. And as usual I've turned to Mariah's music. I've been really listening to Butterfly a lot and it has helped so much with the grieving process. I've been reading the lyrics while listening, and I realized that even without the music the album's writing is an absolute masterpiece. It's like poetry. In an already outstanding catalogue, Butterfly stands above the rest IMO. Like she said herself, it truly is her magnum opus.

Article: All 64 Mariah music videos, ranked from worst to best (56,099) by B from USA
The callback to when Dionne found a "cheap K-Mart hair extension" in the back of Murray's car. Neither Dionne nor Mariah wear polyester hair. I laughed at loud when I read this.

I meant "Inseparable" Jump Smokers remix (although I do love the Irresistible remix from Charbraclete [sic] as well, haha).

Memoirs is the album I listen to the least. IMO the songs sound all a bit too alike and the album as a whole seems a bit uninspired.

Pregnant vocals (56,095) by Luke from United Kingdom
I was just watching some old Chistmas videos of Mariah singing while she was pregnant and her voice sounds so different. It's like there is so much clarity and as if she's finding it easy to sing and not really having to try to sound good, like in this performance especially at the end where she goes from whispery falsetto to full on belting with easy vibrato. What went on during this time? I've heard prenancy can effect you in different ways but was she actually doing anything differently back then?

Rainbow vs Charmbracelet (56,094) by NHYTG from nyc
My choice is Rainbow, Charmbracelet is even my least favorite MC album. I have always had the idea that for Mariah it was hard to find the right musical direction after the Glitter debacle. Some nice tracks (Through The Rain, The One and You Had Your Change) but as a whole a bit uninspired, little messy bunch of tracks. For me this is the only MC album that feels unfinished, some tracks seem somewhat out of place on this album. I just don't feel this album as a whole. Rainbow on the other hand is still great to me, I remember it was made in a hurry because Heartbreaker was already a big hit. If Mariah would have taken some more time for this album it would easily have been Butterfly part 2. After Tonight, Can't Take That Away, How Much and Petals are my favorite tracks, Against All Odds is a great cover (the album version, not the horrible Westlife duet) and the Heartbreaker remix is one of her best remixes. Too bad Rainbow marks the end of an extremely huge era, many artists can only dream of a decade like Mariah had.

Re: Three album groupings (56,087) (56,091) by B from USA
1. Mariah Carey- The only similarity between Mariah's debut and Whitney's were the producers. Unlike Whitney, Mariah wrote and produced her music.
2. Music Box - Music Box is an R&B influenced Pop album. Copying Celine or following a Celine trend? I don't think so.
3. Rainbow is to Butterfly what E=MC2 is to TEOM.
4. E=MC2 - Copying Bey? Beyonce copies (copied) Mariah. Her first two solo albums were ripped from the Mariah Carey playbook.

1. Butterfly is Mariah's magnum opus. It's a lyrical masterpiece.
2. Charmbracelet is underappreciated.
3. Me. I Am Mariah... The Elusive Chanteuse is a classic.
I think Merry Christmas and Daydream deserve inclusion. Merry Christmas is a classic. It's the best Christmas album of all time. Daydream because it's R&B Pop perfection. It's a classic. Mariah Carey has an impressive catalogue. Emotions is also a classic.

I really enjoyed your essay Mimi L. It's great. But there was no need for a rant. Yes I've defended Mariah many times about her weight. But by now from her open ensembles. She's more and likely fine. As for the duet, I'd let Ariana take my place. Now Mariah might be a little nervous and intimated, but I think she's capable of keeping up. I think it could work. Now excuse me while I play Mariah's hit "Infinity".

Three album groupings (56,087) by Matty from Vancouver Canada
After the Charbracelet/Rainbow discussion was brought up on this board, it got me thinking. MC kinda has three different "categories" of albums she releases. This is how I see them. (This is not rating or commenting on the quality of music in any way.) Commercial "Pop" albums: These are albums where Mariah follows of-the-moment pop music trends and are crafted to be pop-music gold.
1. Mariah Carey (debut) - the Whitney/Janet trend
2. Music Box - Celine Dion trend
3. Rainbow - Destiny's Child trend
4. E=MC2 - Beyonce trend
Artistic expression: There is no other album out there that sounds like these quintessential Mariah artistic masterpieces.
1. Butterfly - post Tommy divorce
2. Charmbracelet - post mental and physical exhaustion breakdown
3. Me. I Am Mariah. - during Nick marital destruction
Albums blending what Mariah loves about her artistry/music and what will she can sell to the general public:
1. Emotions - Emotions vs. The Wind
2. The Emancipation of Mimi - We Belong Together vs. Joy Ride
3. Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel - Obsessed vs. Languishing
What do you think?

Rainbow/Charmbracelet and JS vs MC album (56,085) by Matty from Vancouver Canada
In my opinion, Charmbracelet is a much more artistic and inspired album then Rainbow. You can't even compare the two. Charmbracelet is in my top three albums, where as I agree with what another poster said, Rainbow is in my bottom two (or maybe it's my least favourite). Heartbreaker (original and remix), and Bliss are three of Mariah's best songs, but the rest of the album is so choppy and doesn't have flow. I don't feel like Rainbow really sounds like Mariah, the instrumentation and production seem to harsh against Mariah's voice. X-Girlfriend, How Much, Did I Do That, eek. And I hate to say it, but Thank Guy I Found You is too sing-songy to me, it's her most "Pop-basic" #1. It reminds me of a Jessica Simpson or Mandy Moore song or something. I love the Jump Smokers vs Mariah Carey album. I was just as Obsessed (wink wink) with both albums. The Irresistible remix is one of her best dance club remixes ever. It should have been a single, and on a standard album cut.

Re: Memoirs (56,074) (56,083) by Licia from USA
The songs that I listen to the most are HateU, The Impossible, Obsessed, I Want To Know What Love Is, the Inseparable remix, and the Up Out My Face remix. (IMO Nicki's raps really brought something to an otherwise lack luster song. Also the video is hilarious lol.) I just started listening to Betcha Gon Know, It's A Wrap, and Candy Bling. I'm leaning more towards the Candy Bling remix though. I'm trying to get into Ribbon. The remixes that leaked are what made me give Memoirs another listen. I'm still salty about them shelving that album.

Re: Mimi L. / B (56,076) (56,082) by Mimi L. from Empower Your Highlighter
Haha well darling at least I try to give proper opinions/suggestions on things that matters. And not just leave one liners like "Mariah is so fat", "Mariah can't sing", "Mariah lost her writing ability", "Can we get Mariah to be thin again." Plus at least I stick to my opinions. Can't say the same about you. Aren't you the same person who basically called Licia, and me out for suggesting Mariah should embrace her body instead of trying to hide it behind wet suits at beaches and you went on a mini rant telling us how "Mariah's fans are her worst enemies" and how we should "leave Mariah alone because we may not be aware of what she is going through health wise"? (Refer to your own post 54,830.) And yet you disregard what she may be suffering health wise and keep telling her to be thin. I also loved how you wrote "I don't agree with you and neither would Mariah" to a post where I wrote how she shouldn't jump on new projects without giving it her all and release bad singles/videos, whereas you complain the most about her song choices. Oops there you go, wrote a "long essay" again. Don't worry it's my last post directed at you. There will always be a new Giovanni on this board every other day, but we "love" everybody. Oh and I would love to hear you "do a duet with Mariah".
