The comeback (55,412)
by Lee TS from USA
| |
|
|
She handled that so humbly that it was disgusting. It was almost like she was apologizing for it like, "Oops I'm sorry." Even during that one interview with I think his name was Tigger or Tiger on BET when he was baiting her to say something. The closest thing was probably her saying she didn't know where she went but if they want to call it a comeback. I really want to see her on top again, I totally took TEOM for granted. I didn't think it was that big of a deal and of course she would be #1, where else would she be? Even when #Beautiful peaked at #15 and doing over one million I felt it failed. But now when all we can get is a debut on somewhere in the mid 80's I'm like woah. I think now if we can get a hit song we would be more appreciative. I think Mariah would definitely be able to enjoy it more. I remember going to TAOM concert and sat next to this little girl who was probably like 8 years old at the time. I think the only song she knew was WBT and I remember her telling me how she loves Mariah and thought she was so pretty. I want that to happen again where young fans learn about her because they discovered Mariah themselves, not by parents forcing Mariah down their throats. I'm sure there are lamb parents out there who only allows Mariah to be played. I never really cared for or knew Cher until Believe came along. I hope Mariah gets her Believe moment.

Ugh correction (55,411)

I meant "that's not to say that she was not gorgeous in other eras too". Oh and the "video shots" I was talking about were not only the music videos but the interviews and appearances she made during that time. For me the first cringe worthy MC video was "Loverboy". I can't deal with those kaleidoscope shots and those short shorts with her bum hanging out. But she looked great regardless. But I did cringe.

Although Mariah is always beautiful and sexy, if I had to pick one era where she was at the most gorgeous, I think it would be the "Butterfly" era. That's not to say that she was gorgeous in other eras too, but her photos from "Butterfly" era and her video shots were extremely gorgeous. Everything was perfect. The hairstyle, the hair color (the gorgeous honey blonde), the sexy yet cute/classy dresses. I laughed at your comment about cringing at "Heartbreaker". I love that video and I didn't really find it vulgar, for me it was very cute with the pink crochet top and the cute signature "rainbow" era hairstyle (lose curls with a clip on the side) but I do remember them boobies swinging around on the screen haha. The video for "Honey" was hot tamale. I vote for a Honey 2.0, now that Mariah is back in that bodysuit for her Vegas shows.

Oh wow that sounds ton of exciting. Yeah I was thinking of Marilyn and that would totally bore me. I think Mariah has kind of hit the limit with paying homage to the beauty icon. Roe can play the baby white grand piano to the tune of I Still Believe in the designated bathroom in her penthouse. Enough. We need more different visuals from her than the usual. Something she can definitely take note from Beyonce and JLo who aren't afraid to ugly it up. So I was watching all the rare clips from the AP channel and Mariah was such a babe. At the peak of her beauty she was so, ok going to sound vulgar, but she was oh so bangable. Not that she's my cup of tea but what a shame she was such a prude. I would be dating all the boys in the land haha. I never thought I would actually say this but I want her to feel her sexy again and show the body in them skimpy outfits, whereas I always wanted her to cover up and be more ladylike as a kid. I remember cringing when watching Heartbreaker and that video today is nothing but tamed. My how things have changed. I still remember my cousin's girlfriend screaming slut slurs when Honey was playing on TV and I felt so ashamed. Anyway, I hope the Bazaar shoot turns out amazing.

I totally agree with you Bill. I love "Music Box". The whole album is a masterpiece. So many amazing songs on there. Not to mention, there are songs on that album that brought me, and so many other Mariah fans, comfort during hard times. That album is so special.

Harper's Bazaar (55,407)

I too heard that the shoot is inspired by a famous painting and that it involves a swing and that Victorian era undergarments. I am actually excited about the shoot. It sounds like something Mariah never did before. We know the usual Mariah poses. One hand up (a la TEOM, E=MC2), the close up and parted lips (CB, Daydream and MIAM deluxe and Japan editions), both hands up (Rainbow, MIAM standard edition) and so on. So I am thrilled for a more artistic shoot. I would prefer something other than Marilyn because Mariah has paid homage to Marilyn directly or indirectly multiple times. I am really excited for this project. I have always wanted Mariah in HB, Vogue and Vanity Fair.

Thanks, Mimi L., I agree with everything you said. That comment was definitely blown out of proportion, but I see why people would see at as offensive. Especially with Mariah's obsession with being "eternally 12" lol. Also, I think Katy and John were doing a radio interview when Katy said their duet was inspired by "Mariah's laugh at the end of her songs in 1990" which I think refers to Emotions, with Mariah's laugh after the iconic whistle riff. And thank you for the polite response, as well. You have always been a great poster and I always love to read what you have to say. Also, Lee TS, I'm assuming you think Mariah is going to portray Marilyn Monroe, right? I thought so too. However, there was a video interview posted while Mariah was in Paris of the photographer speaking about the shoot. I don't speak French at all and got this rough translation from someone else, but he said that it was inspired by "The Swing", which is that famous painting of the woman on the swing in the huge pink dress and sort of showing her undergarments. He said it was because that's the kind of sexiness and playfulness Mariah evokes. I hope someone who speaks French can help us with this. He even shows a rough sketch of the shoot, and it definitely is inspired by that 18th century beauty. This definitely will be different and not the typical Mariah beauty shot. It's Harper's Bazaar.

Never Forget You / Babyface (55,405)
by Bill from the UK
| |
|
|
I have been listening to Music Box lately, specifically Never Forget You. What a gem of a track this is. I've never understood why MC and Babyface have not worked together more than the handful of times they have. Each collaboration has been magic. Melt Away, When You Believe, Every Time I Close My Eyes. Beautiful, elegant, classy numbers and real jewels in Mariah's crown. Never Forget You is just so mesmeric. The silky, syrupy production, those glorious tones that Mariah and Babyface's vocals make on the chorus together, the sad and heart felt message, and of course those incomparable runs and ad-libs Mariah goes into at the bridge's end and beyond. It's a song that I never want to end and a real highlight of the album. I hope they work together again soon.

Savage Garden, The Corrs and Matchbox Twenty. I loved to listen to those artists (beside Mariah) when I started to listen to English songs. I loved Destiny's Child and early Beyonce, now I enjoy Alicia Keys, Bruno Mars and Adele. The last videos posted from her Vegas show are amazing. I guess that vacation was really helpful in lifting her spirits. She was just wow.

MC setlist (55,402)
by Willyc95 from United States
| |
|
|
I love Mariah, but I hope when she goes on tour again she revamps her setlist. I love all her songs, but I must say Honey, Heartbreaker, Touch My Body, Emotions, etc. have become a little played out. They're still great songs but I'd like to see her perform some of her more lesser known songs. For example: Say somethin' Camouflage Faded Crybaby Alone in love You got me Lead the way Languishing I wish you well Underneath the stars Anytime you need a friend She has so many amazing songs, and I just wish she "refresh" her setlist more often. I feel like she sings the same ones at every appearance. What are your thoughts, and what songs would you like for her to perform in the future?

Re: vocal agility / coloratura (55,401)

Some great examples: The ending of Vanishing live rehearsal where she transitioned from a belt to a whistle note The ending of If It's Over (Grammy performance). The Scat towards the end of Anytime You Need A Friend remix (just amazing). Climax belt of Melt Away (baby iiiiiii). Climax of Hero live MSG (when her belts are even higher than the recorded version). Live 96' performances of VOL in Rotterdam and Tokyo Dome, her melisma in the word "all" in the ending climax. The Rotterdam one completely floored me. Hope this helps.

Mariah's insane vocal agility and coloratura examples (55,399)
by Tyler from USA
| |
|
|
What do you guys think are Mariah's absolute greatest vocal performances that best showcase her vocal agility (live and studio)? You know, one's with 1) the hardest and most complex runs, riffs and melisma and vocal climaxes and 2) one's where she's just going all out and straight sangin' and/or taking it to church. I'm planning on making a showcase on YouTube for it.

I listen to a lot, but these are those who are on constant heavy rotation: Male: Stevie Wonder - genius; end of discussion Michael Jackson - no explanation needed Marvin Gaye - passion personified George Michael - most soothing breathy vocals Robin Thicke - best falsetto in the biz Michael Buble - best classical crooner of this generation John Legend - sexy rich, husky tone John Mayer - classic example of image overshadowing talent Jason Mraz - clever and stylistically complex Nathan Sykes - could be much bigger if he is only paid more attention Female: Janet Jackson - most sensual voice out there Madonna - paved the way for every imaginable current female artist Kylie Minogue - underrated albeit uber likeable Sade - most instantly recognizable unique voice Corinne Drewery (Swing Out Sister) - modern Dusty Springfield Amy Winehouse - gone way too soon Brandy - intriguing mixture of warm and cold, hard and soft Lady GaGa - electro or jazz, still a great vocalist JoJo - should be bigger than most current female stars Chrisette Michele - another great talent who's unfortunately still low profile Karen Carpenter - unmatched clear, mature tone Corinne Bailey Rae - honey-dipped voice Kimbra - creates "panoramic" sounds

The first show of the July leg in Vegas, I was fortunate enough to attend. I must say, I was deeply concerned when MC sang this song early into the show. I hesitated posting it, in fear that any hater would pick up on it that would only foster more haters to comment on it. But then I stopped today, and thought, Mariah Carey is truly one of those elite professionals who, even with this one hiccup in the first show in July, moves beyond it to sing her heart out and give what became the beginning of a great come back in this Vegas residency that does nothing but get better with time to a point where she has proven her superb ability in her vocal range and finesse that is almost untouchable by others. getting better. Way to go Mariah, I for one apeopleaud you. Here is the link.

Key of Mariah's songs (55,393)
by Billy from Greece
| |
|
|
See what Mariah has to say about writing her songs on a higher, demanding key and you can see why this may be a trap as well. While she may have a point about songs written in this key being more exciting (meaning, they may have a more joyful feel, always keeping in mind what the mood of the song asks for), I so adore her lower register and what this may bring to songs. Maybe that's why she still feels compelled to not lower the key to some songs ("Fantasy" for instance) and tends to partially lip parts. I wish she got rid of this preconceptions because her voice is a wonder to behold in all its forms.

Thank you to all who responded to my question. It's cool to see the wide selection of music that we all like. I really was happy to see Selena Quintanilla mentioned. I will always have a special place in my heart for her. Her music is timeless and will live on forever. I already mentioned that I like Lana Del Rey. I am into everything from classic country like Dolly Parton, The Judds, George Straight, Garth Brooks and such, to heavy metal and everything in between. I like classic Metallica, Megadeth, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Alanis Morissette, I am a 90's child for sure. I miss that whole grunge era. I also love the Beastie Boys, 2 Pac, Notorious B.I.G. all the classic "real" hip-hop, Jodeci, Aaliyah, TLC, I love classic rock like ZZ Top, Van Halen, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, and Janis Joplin. If it's "good stuff" I like it.

MC will always be my #1, that's for sure. But I also like Whitney, Beyoncé, Bon Jovi, Janis Joplin, Tori Kelly, Brian McKnight, Pentatonix, Ariana Grande (she was better during Yours Truly era imo), Queen, The Beatles, Bastille, Coldplay, Imagine Dragons, Fall Out Boy, Agnez Mo (her music was better before she went international, her Indonesian songs were really good and she got that insane vocal range), and a lot more lol. I used to like Nicki Minaj before she released Pink Friday and went pop. Her mixtapes were dope but she wasted her rapping skills on pop songs. I liked her latest album though (besides a few tracks like Anaconda).

Mariah is hands down my fave. The others in the quartet de awesomeness for me are Brand New, Lady Gaga and The Killers/Brandon Flowers. I also like Lifehouse, Enrique Iglesias, Robbie Williams, Shania Twain, Green Day, Blink 182, Matchbox Twenty, No Doubt (but not Gwen's solo stuff at all strangely enough), Wynonna/The Judds, The Smiths, Queen, Nelly Furtado, Alex Ubago, Caedmon's Call, Dashboard Confessional. So it's odd that Mariah is my absolute fave as I'm mostly a rock, punk and emo kind of boy. I do like some Janet and some Whitney, but neither are my faves. (I do like "No Sleeep".) I can't stand Beyonce or Katy Perry, but if they're fans of Mariah, at least they have some good taste. I still would love a duet between Mariah and Gaga, or Mariah and Brandon Flowers (The Killers are from Vegas), or Mariah and Enrique. I just started listening to Miguel's stuff outside of #Beautiful and am enjoying his new album.
