First post and Infinity sneak peek (53,615)
by UnderneathTheStars from Italy
| |
|
|
Hello guys, this is my very first post. The songs that I currently enjoy the most are I Don't Wanna Cry (because of the sublime performance in Vegas), I'll Be Lovin' U Long Time (perhaps her strongest single since 2008) but above all Infinity, which I find wonderfully uplifting. Album wise I think Mariah Carey, Daydream, and Butterfly are her masterpieces. The other albums are also great and include several gems. In fact, Glitter is the only non-holiday album by Mariah that doesn't resonate with me. Now, speaking of the new video, I watched the sneak peek many times already and I find it fantastically good. Nobody should miss the priceless look in her eyes when she repeatedly shuts the door on those corny guys, it makes me feel wildly excited aha ha. It may be her best video after Honey, Heartbreaker, We Belong Together and of course Touch My Body, especially because it looks like a fabulous combination of WBT and TMB. While the WBT video has an intriguing twist and an elegiac atmosphere, and it manages to be elegant in unprecedented ways, the other ones are hilarious and complement her music perfectly. I know she is a hopeless romantic and I'm also into her profound sadness à la Faded or Slipping Away, but this sort of humorous visual representation is a match made in heaven. I hope the video includes additional corny moments. This time we are in for a real treat.

Infinity (53,614)

Like some others have said, I too do not overly love this song. Is a shame, as it's the one and only new song to feature on the album. It feels as if the song was rushed. As for the video? Why has it taken so long? Any momentum this song could of had with all the live performances, would have been enhanced if the video had arrived sooner. I'm glad she's been out and about doing great promotion, this has been absent in recent years. I think, all in all, this era is going down much better with the general public. People are talking positively about her, the Vegas show and all her number ones remind people why she is so successful and the talent that we all know Mariah is. Long may it continue.

Mariah Carey and Celine Dion duet (53,613)
by MC1989 from Spain
| |
|
|
Celine has always been kind to Mariah. She sent flowers to Mariah during MC's first shows in Vegas. A few years ago (when MC was in American Idol) she was asked about working with Mariah and she answered "Yeah. Definitely." In the interview she gave in March when she announced that Rene had cancer she put any rivalry away between her and other divas by saying that "There won't be another Mariah, and there won't be another Britney, each of us are unique." I would love a Mariah Carey and Celine Dion duet. It would be like a full circle. The diva trinity of the 90's: Whitney, Mariah, Celine. When You Believe was an epic duet that will last forever as one of the greatest duets in pop music. Whitney is gone (RIP) and an MC-Celine duet could be epic as well. Two of the greatest divas standing together. They could sing something easy, not trying to belt and hit high notes, something simple but sang with their personal and unique voices. Both Mariah and Celine haven't got the voices they had a few years ago so it wouldn't be like a competition, just the two of them singing their parts and mixing their voices in the chorus. It would be a dream come true for me and for many fans.

Interviews and performances (53,612)

I'm happy about the way Mariah has been presenting herself during interviews lately. She comes across as confident yet humble, light and funny but focused. There's not too much rambling, if at all. I feel like she's back to business. Her voice is getting stronger too and there's less and less lipping. Gotta give her credit for singing live at the Billboard Awards even though she was sick. She sounded even better on Jimmy Kimmel. Good for you MC.

Time review of #1 To Infinity (53,611)
by this_is_qhm from the Philippines

|
This is probably one of the best reviews of any Mariah album I have read, not because it was favorable, but because it is impressively well balanced and complete, effectively summarizing Mariah's entire identity as an artist, her highs, her lows, her flaws, her artistic output, etc. It may as well be written by a fan, but it still manages to be straightforwardly honest without ever being offensive. Much respect to the writer for being able to achieve such delicate balance.

MC appreciation (53,610)
by Jono from USA
| |
|
|
I just wanted to take time to appreciate how much MC has done for us in the past 25 years. If the most "controversial" thing Mariah can do nowadays is 1) wear skimpy outfits and 2) not sound like 1990, then we really have it good. Other singers/celebrities try so hard to stay in the limelight by generating unnecessary and tacky controversy, and in general setting a terrible example for young kids. Of course I think an artist is entitled to artistic freedom and expression, but you can tell when something is done with intent vs something done to create cheap press. We can count on MC to never randomly make out with someone, bare her ass to the world, or start twerking just because it's in. I would be embarrassed as a fan if she did those things. So here's to MC, who will always let her talent speak for itself.

Celine and Mariah (53,609)

I think Celine is a sweet person. I love her voice, and like a few of her songs. Maybe her and M could get together for dinner or something. Or even have a little play date for the kids. She seems like a really loving positive person. I wonder what it would be like if they wrote a song together? That would get some attention for sure.

Shelly / Fantasy (53,608)
by Bill from the UK
| |
|
|
Shelly, regarding your question about Fantasy, there were several remixes that differed slightly, all of which can be found across the two CD singles issued in the UK. The original #1's, The Remixes and The Collection all feature the "Bad Boy with ODB" version. #1 To Infinity features instead the "Bad Boy Fantasy" version which retains the chorus from the original. There was also the "Bad Boy Mix" which removed ODB's rap, "Puffy's Mix" which is nearly identical to the ODB remix but the only difference (that I can hear) is the removal of the echo from the "jump jump" line. Finally there was "Puffy's Club Mix" which removed the acapella intro. I love the Fantasy singles and the remixes. Those Bad Boy Mixes coupled with the divine Morales club versions was just brilliant. The "Sweet Dub Mix", 8 minutes of MC cooing and ad libbing, still remains one of my favourites to this day.

Jimmy Kimmel was amazing. She sounded so confident. I loved her interactions with the fans and her singing The Roof. I also enjoyed her interview. I'm looking forward to her Kelly & Michael appearance this Friday. I think Michael loves himself some MC. I don't care what media outlets say about Mariah. She really has nothing left to prove at this point.

"If most of the major media outlets said that she did good enough, why should we care what some little radio show thinks?" Just to be clear: I don't agree with their assessment and MC is great enough for me. The reason I mentioned it was because I think this is what the GP thinks and if we want MC to sell, the public perception about her needs to change. Blogs and comment sections on the internet have said the same things. I posted what's being said in my neck of the woods in case MC's marketing team reads this site so that they can work on it if they feel the need. What the GP thinks about a brand is important when you're trying to sell something. Sometimes people agree with what others are saying because they're too tired mentally to think for themselves. Look at what happened with Michael Jackson. Negative public image translated to a decline in sales when he wasn't "cool" anymore. (Okay back to work. Last post of the day for real.)

Shelly (53,604)
by Bill from the UK

Thank you so much Shelly. Here's the UK tracks: Without You: My mother used to sing Harry Nilsson's "Without You" to me when I was a baby. I think she even sang it when she was pregnant with me. Years later I heard the song when I was sitting in a restaurant and realised that it could be a worldwide hit all over again for a new generation of people who had not heard it yet. That's where the idea to remake "Without You" came from. Endless Love: I remember hearing "Endless Love" when I was a little girl, and I loved the duet between Diana Ross and Lionel Richie. It was an honour to sing with the great Luther Vandross. Against All Odds: "Against All Odds" was one of my favourite songs growing up. Phil Collins is a fantastic writer and an incredible artist. I was very happy to perform the song with Westlife. I remember recording in Capri, which was one of the first times I met Simon Cowell. He saw me producing in the studio and we worked very well together, all of us there in the beautiful studio in Capri where I recorded so many songs. I'm really proud of the fact that this song went to number one in England.

Thank God I Found You: I worked with Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis who are incredible producers and I was honored to work with them. We collaborated in a way that was not one of your typical collaborations. The songs and the interludes from this album are some of my best work. This was a collaboration of my voice mixed with Joe, one of my favorite R&B singers ever and the boys from 98 degrees. I am very grateful for the success of this song. Thank you Bill, I would love to know what she wrote about the songs that weren't included in the US release.

Hello, I don't have scans but I do visit discogs.com and a great Japaneses site to see what is out out there I give a it a week or two before things start popping up. I went digital a few years ago so I was upset to see this release did not have a digital booklet, not even a special iTunes edition. That would have been a neat interaction all the videos and liner notes.

Thank you for transcribing for us Europeans Shelly. Would you also be so kind as to let me know what she's written about Thank God I Found You, as that also got ousted from the EU version. If you'd like to know what was written about Without You, Endless Love and Against All Odds then let me know and I'll return the favour. Good to see you back.

Mariah did good with "VOL". I think she could give another spectacular performance like she did on BET. She just needs to keep vocal training and to always be confident. As far as LA Reid is concerned, don't really care for him. Never have, he seems like one of those selfish people who only cares about money. Mariah can most definitely have another hit song. I am really looking forward to the next album. Even though I hate "Infinity" I still believe Mariah can do better and deliver with great songs like on "MIAM". Which is still a great piece of work.

With all due respect (53,595)
by Terri from USA

Contrary to some of the negative comments about MC's BBA performance, she still was good. I was concerned that she would lip sinc or not hit the high notes. I sat close to the TV timing her breathing, lipping, and sound. They were in sync. You could distinguish her actual voice. Are her vocal acrobats as sharp and on point like back in the day? No. But it's still the best out there. Patti LaBelle on DWTS and Chaka Kahn a while back, have both adjusted there changing voice abilities. It's evitable. But all three can still out-sing today's top poppers. I bet not one who would want to be on stage with either of the 3. When radio folks and journalists knock her singing and even her emotional and mental stability, I ignore them. Just as many media outlets also praised her performance. Did I bemoan her cancelling a show knowing the fall out and possible impact of attendance on her future shows? Yes. But that's MC. As her fans she can make us a bit nervous. However, she always comes back. Her accomplishments, even now, "#1 to Infinity" climbs the charts (in spite of LA Reid's predictions?), her business acumen, writing talents, and ever growing net worth, she can laugh all the way to the bank. About JLo, the media wants a firestorm. On American Idol she's often spoken highly of MC. On BBA: maybe she was thinking, "Damn, she's still got it" or "Will I be able to carry a Vegas show?" or "I wish I could just stand there and sing half as good." That's my take, dahlings.

More thoughts (sorry, last post today) (53,588)
by Dove from USA

I forgot to add that when the radio host made those comments I switched to a different channel and they were talking about MC too. They were a little bit kinder but still negative. It's a man and a woman. The man said, "It's so sad. What a gift she had." And the woman said, "I think she is a troubled woman and she has always been a troubled woman." She said more but I don't remember. Then they brought up the article that said Mariah was stuck in a cage of her own making. Then the man repeated that it was truly sad that she lost her voice because MC had one of the best voices of the past 30 years. Oh and they also mentioned from the article (NYT I think) that the reviewer said she would prepare to go for the high note and then not (in Vegas). The male radio host said, "That's what it sounds like is happening here (BMA sound bite)."

A story (53,586)
by Dove from USA
| |
|
|
I think being kind to people and maintaining good relationships is so important. The day after the BMA's I was listening to my regular morning show on the radio and they were talking about the BMA's. It's two woman and two men. They played a clip of MC's performance and one of the men said, "She recovered in the end." But one of the women said, "No, she shouldn't do that anymore (the high note at the end)." When Infinity came out, they were talking about it and the same woman said, "I can't understand anything she's saying." And started talking about something that happened the night before. I can tell by the way the one female host talks about MC that she doesn't like her. I'm thinking either MC or someone in her camp was rude to her or she's believing the tabloid stories. They love JL though. JL has called in to the show and she's always super nice and open when asked questions. This reminds me of something that happened with two Drs I know. A woman filed a malpractice suit against Dr A. Dr A is brilliant, he is one of the smartest people I've ever encountered, but he doesn't have great people skills. He's autistic. It turns out it wasn't his fault and when the woman found out it was Dr B's fault, she dropped the suit. Dr B has amazing people skills, he looks people in the eye and makes them feel amazing. People will forgive a lot if they like you. MC should call the big radio stations to give 15 minute interviews. And be nice and open. Just answer the questions.
