Every Time I Close My Eyes (54,728) by Bill from the UK
Yep I agree, this is a great song. I do believe Mariah's involvement was a "returning the favour" gesture. I'm sure either Babyface or MC said something about that once. Her background vocals are just impeccable. She completely makes that song what it is and just elevates it up a level. I also agree that R&B in the 90s was just untouchable. Those of us around back then didn't know how good we had it.

Aww. Such a nice and pretty and chill song with so many memories. Thank you for bringing it into my consciousness, I'll have to listen to it now. Yes, the 90s were magnificent, and they still have a huge piece of my heart. I can't even describe the feeling when I think back on the nostalgia sometimes. Heaven. I think that's what it was.

Every Time I Close My Eyes (54,726) by this_is_qhm from the Philippines
I don't really know much about how this song came into existence, but don't you just wish this was just a proper duet between Mariah and Babyface? I think that maybe it was friendly way of Mariah returning the favor for his contributions in her albums. It's on Babyface's album, but if it were a duet, then it could've easily fit in Daydream or Butterfly. That said, isn't this song just so dreamy? It's a classic Babyface production, and his voice just melds very well with Mariah's background vocals. Had this been an official duet, it would've charted higher, maybe even to #1 considering Mariah's dominance in the 90's. It's a prime example of just how smooth 90's slow jams are and how great R&B was at its peak.

Best storytelling / songwriting (54,725) by Philipp from Switzerland
Regarding this subject I want to give a round of applause for "Petals". This song is so haunting and beautiful and sad and simply amazing.

Stacey challenge (54,724) by Norman from USA
Hey there Stacey, you made it a little difficult by keeping the holiday songs off limits for this challenge, because it's like she was born to sing that holiday staple. And I don't mean the one she wrote, which is, of course, amazing. OK. Top 5 lyrics:
1. Underneath The Stars
2. The Roof
3. Looking In
4. Side Effects
5. Betcha Gon' Know
Top 5 vocals:
1. Anytime You Need a Friend (C&C remix) - I mean, this is just epic in every single way. She freestyle scats on this thing (exclamation point) Seriously.
2. Never Forget You - One of two Babyface collaborations.
3. So Blessed - She has such a rich tone in this.
4. I Am Free - An elegant piano driven gospel inspired song with light pop flourishes. She soars and takes you with her - goosebumps and all.
5. Butterfly (SNL) - I was really tempted to leave this in the songwriting category, but I think it's just as equally powerful with the vocals, especially in this live performance. It's pretty much all falsetto, you know? Talk about level of difficultly.
These are all in random order, btw. This list would deffo change if the #1's and the holiday songs could be included, but I guess this makes it more fun. Cheers.

Hardest song (54,723) by Tevin from USA
Even though vocally some of Mariah's songs like [...] and [...] and [...] are harder. I would say for live vocals VOL is the hardest. Even though she has given many amazing performances, that is the only song that for some reason to me she could never reproduce singing live and sounding as powerful and haunting if you will as the CD version. Even with the growls during her debut and [...] era and the extra runs she added to the song during the [...] era, nothing beats poping in that tape or CD or vinyl or iPod and listening to that song. Does anyone agree with me, or am I the only one that feel that way? As for the top 5 lyrical songs:
5. Butterfly
4. Petals
3. Melt away (if any women could sing this to me and sound the way Mariah did, I would be on my knees proposing marriage)
2. LTT simple yet pure and honest.
1. The roof
If you could see bliss that's what that song and video could be. The song draws you in and makes you feel like you are apart of everything that's going on. Even if you can only understand Mariah through half of the song lol. Got to love the breathy vocals.

Top 5 (54,722) by Darryle from USA
Vocals:
1. Fly Like A Bird
2. Emotions
3. Subtle Invitation
4. Vision of Love
5. Against All Odds (Take A Look At Me Now)
Song Writing:
1. Close My Eyes
2. Outside
3. Petals
4. Twister
5. Camouflage
I think it says a lot about Mariah's current vocal state that she can still perform 3 out of the first 5 songs similar to the originals.

Janet snippet / Lee TS / Mariah and Babyface (54,721) by this_is_qhm from the Philippines
Yeah, when I first heard it, I was like, this is almost exactly the same opening cascading keyboard intro of Mariah's Yours. It makes sense, as Jimmy & Terry produced that song, and as we all know, they've been with Janet from Control to 20 Y.O. So I guess this means Jan's back with the producers she really belongs with. Mariah kinda has this scorched-earth-policy she follows in both her personal and professional life, so I guess it's unlikely for her to get back together with Walter. So if we won't get that, then maybe Babyface would be more likely. His production style has this signature soft, plush 90's sound (best heard in the gorgeous Melt Away and Madonna's epic Take A Bow) which would be a nice contrast to Mariah's grittier, huskier tone. Please, Mariah, just for the nostalgia, even if it was just for one song.

It's Bianca bitches, and don't call it a comeback neither (54,720) by Baby from Dreamville...Where There's No Beginning & There is No End
This is Mariah's message: "Does the ?lambily? miss Bianca? I think her comeback is due.?" Yes a thousand 8. Yes. Bianca's return is imminent and I am too psyched to play it cool. *screaming and squeeing on the inside on account of it being almost midnight and I'm not that type of neighbour* Whatever, I don't care that I'm not making sense. I wonder if Bianca's gonna make her appearance on Game Of War because that's what I've between wishing on the low since Friday whenever that broke. I'm telling you, it's like I have ESPN or something. But I don't wanna be greedy, let Bianca reemerge in whatever incarnation just as long as she shows up. So how do you guys think it's gonna happen? Thanks for hearing the incessant Bianca campaign MiMi, can't nobody say you ain't a good listener.

Vocals, songwriting challenge (54,719) by Stacey from USA
My list changes all the time too. This challenge was hard for me too. But, I wanted to ask a question that caused us all to dig deeper and look at more obscure songs we don't think of often.

5. Mine Again - Impressive belting.
4. Subtle Invitation - Her ad libs towards the end.
3. Make It Happen - Once again, dem growls.
2. My All - It's got both low lows and high highs.

Interesting topic. My top 5 vocals:

4. Forever
5. Anytime you need a friend
Lyrics
1. The roof

In other news, how sweet and kind of Mariah to give a front row ticket to that kid with cancer. I hope people give her more credit, appreciate her, and stop telling her to grow up. If someone tells me that, I would be insulted. We don't really know for sure what happened between her and Walter. She made her decision a long time ago it seems. Deal with it, move on, and let's all grow up.

Stacey challange (54,712) by Warrior Butterfly from USA
I tried to pick songs that are not part of the 18 pack or automatically identified with Mariah.
Vocals:
01. Vanishing - Does not have to use whistle to sound amazing.
02. Long ago - Started to give hints of what was to come having a more Urban sound
03. The beautiful ones - She kept up with Drew Hill they are completely different but man she went for it, stayed low-mid range.
04. After tonight - Towards the end it sounds like does a duet with herself.
05. Subtle invitation - Around the 3:10 "if you really need me baby [...]".
Writing:
01. Alone in love - The longing for your lover to love you is captured.
02. Twister - Mourning and deep loss for someone that was truly special but wishing them peace.
03. Till the end of time - The original infinity, they share similar theme except this is less cheecky.
04. Cry. - "I should have known that you were trying to love me" trying to figure out the love your already in.
05. Supernatural - Ignoring Dem Babies being woven in and out it reads very sweetly, Underneath The Stars for 2014.

Secret album (54,709) by Giovanni from USA
I think it'd be cool if Mariah dropped a secret album sometime this year. She surely has to have enough tracks by now. And even though I'd like something different I really would just want some new music. "Me I am Mariah" is a great album, but I want more. (Does that make me selfish?) I thought for her 25 years in the business she was going to release an album full of unreleased songs. From her debut all the way until now. More than anything I'd like to hear material from 1990. "Weakness of the body" was such a waste and missed opportunity.

These lists were hard. The order is interchangeable.

Walter on the Music Box record / Adam (54,706) by 123 from USA
Adam, you might have missed Walter's recent interviews regarding Mariah, they are not complementary at all. You might want to look up his comments when she launched her Chanteuse Tour. He did an interview prior regarding AIWFCIY stating "it's not my favorite song I've written" yet Mariah has stated recently that she wrote the whole song and "silly of me" for giving up 50% of the credits. She even came up with the melody on her Casio keyboard. It's very apparent that he only wants to work with her again for the cash. He broke her trust during a time where she needed it most, especially when other producers didn't take Tommy's offer to spy on her after their divorce. Also, Mariah would beg to differ on your comment that Walter is responsible for a huge part of her success. If you watch this interview, at 6:30 the interviewer makes that same reference and Mariah quickly corrects her as her face already said what she was thinking. "We are collectively responsible for those." Mariah cuts folks loose who betray her, she isn't going to work with him ever again, and I'm fine with that. Hopefully one day everyone else will be too.

Stacey (54,704) by LC from USA
I've always wanted to ask this on this messageboard but I never got around to it, so thank you for posting. For vocals, I think I would choose:
1. O Holy Night: Hands down her best vocal performance, in my opinion. God was in the studio when she recorded this. I also let my friend listen to this song a while ago and she turned into a lamb.
2. Emotions: It's one of the most vocally challenging songs ever recorded. And it's the ultimate song for any singer to prove their whistle register.
3. Butterfly: One of her greatest, most emotional and beautifully sung songs.
4. If It's Over (Grammys): Her greatest live performance. Enough said.
5. Fly Like A Bird: A good way to show that a Mariah never "lost her voice" after the 90s and is still a world class vocalist to this day.
Songwriting:
1. Cry. Such an emotional song, with such powerful lyrics.
2. The Roof: The imagery is amazing here. One of her greatest songs.
3. Fourth of July: This is poetry.
4. Outside: Such a beautifully written track. One of my favorites.
5. Breakdown: So haunting and deceiving, beautiful.
There are so many missing here, and on any given day, some of these might change but I think this is a list I could definitely go with. Mariah really has the greatest discography.

Vocals, songwriting (54,703) by Stacey from USA
If someone asked you your 5 most favorite tracks to show off Mariah's best vocals what would they be? If someone asked you to do the same with her songwriting, what would they be? Try not to include any "woe is me" Hero/CTTA or holiday tracks because those are way too obvious for both vocals and songwriting. Dig deeper. My picks for vocals are:
*You're So Cold (the intro), that intro leaves me speechless.
*Vanishing (SNL '90 performance)
*Emotions (Unplugged '92)
*Underneath the Stars
*Circles (that run at 2:44 gives me chills everytime)
I need to think about songs that show off her amazing songwriting skills. One off the top of my head would be The Roof. There is some phenomenal storytelling going on here. She writes in such a way that you can visualize the scene as it unfolds in the song. Looking In is another favorite. I don't think anyone had any idea how miserable MC was in her life. That song is the theme of my life. So powerful. Have fun.

Ticket upgrade for fan / MILG (54,702) by Deedre aka MiTodoChop @HBF from Canada
What a lovely story to read on the site. I know she gets labelled a diva, but she has such a big heart. Love her. Make It Look Good is absolutely fantastic. A boat was missed by not releasing it as a single. I actually don't skip over songs on MIAM. I know some or less than impressed with the album, but I think she did an incredible album. Thirsty is not my fave track, but oh well, lol.
