16. Mariah Carey - Me. I Am Mariah... The Elusive Chanteuse
(Thursday 4 December 2014; 21:36)
Rockefeller Center Christmas (48,226) by B from USA
Her voice was on point. She didn't hit some notes but she seemed to be having problems with her earpiece. I'm not delusional. I thought other than not being able to hit the high notes she did just fine. It was live and she proved she can still sing and I'm one happy lamb. A few flat notes and pitch problems does not make the performance a bad performance.

Next album cover (48,225) by Dove from USA
I would like it if on her next album the cover was original artwork by her. Inside in the booklet there can be pictures of her for the people who actually buy the album to see. One of the pictures can be of her face, taken when the sun is setting with no filter. Or at her house hanging out with her kids like the ones she posts on Instagram. Or wearing a fancy gown on a piano but with minimal retouching. Or building sandcastles on the beach with her kids. She can record songs without the super high notes, and melisma, and floating between registers so that she can confidently sing them live if she wants to. Luckily the style of songs that are popular right now are sung simply so she just needs to write good songs like that. I would love just her and the piano or guitar. I would like to hear Sia inspired Mariah. I think that would be magical. I'm craving more deep and raw/real Mariah.

Re: (48,199) by Badr (48,224) by Dove from USA
You lost me at lose weight. She looks beautiful and healthy at the weight she's at. I don't see a protruding gut on her. Even when she was pregnant and bigger she still got ready and looked beautiful. She went through a sex symbol era but I don't think she needs to stay there forever if she doesn't want to. People can grow and evolve.

Performance (48,223) by Luis from Spain
I do think she sang nice. Maybe we fans are used to worse performances and after watching her defending herself properly we tend to think she has done a good job. I freaked out with Twitter yesterday. She failed a couple of times in a free space, it was cold, and she is struggling to what seems to be an inmediate divorce.

Yep, the Rockefeller performance was really bad (48,222) by Paul D from USA
Mariah's performance of AIWFCIY was horrendous this past Wednesday at Rockefeller Center. It was similarly horrible at last year's tree lighting ceremony in Washington, DC. Having a couple of off-nights as a singer is fine. What worries me greatly is if there is some bigger vocal issue. As much as I despise all the crap that Walter Afanasieff has recently spewed in his interviews, I am saddened by what could possibly be the deterioration of Mariah's voice, or the lack of consistency in her singing. I'm going to the December 20th show at the Beacon Theatre in NYC, so I hope she'll do much better in an indoor setting and a more controlled environment.

Tree lighting performance (48,221) by Lee from UK
You could tell from the first note that this wasn't going to go well. She constantly had her fingers in her ears fiddling with monitors so she was obviously struggling to hear herself. She sounded winded and out of breath and as a result didn't even attempt to reach most of the higher notes. The ones she did aim for fell flat. I'm glad she performed completely live but would have been lost without her backing singers. I hope Mariah watches this back to herself and has a think.

Smh (48,220) by S from
I just think there's such a mean spirited bully-mentality in the media with all the "hear Mariah struggle through her song" articles. We all know that Mariah has talent and can/could sing, why don't they take their time to expose one of those young manufactured pop girls whose voices are autotuned like crazy? No, instead let's attack a veteran who has nothing left to prove because she has already earned her status and stardom since the past nearly 25 years. Ridiculous.

She will only get better whenever she decided to get better (48,219) by Cgee54 from Usa
I love Mariah and yesterday performance was okay in my opinion. Not her best but it was enough for me. The melody was still there and the song spirit was there as well. I'm amazed how cynical the world is towards artists with incredible talents, not only towards Mariah but to many others. It's like most people want to see these artists fail so they could later go on Twitter and destroy them, I simply don't get it. Anyway, I think this is the time for Mariah to start making decisions and do something about her career. I would think vocal therapy would do her wonders, but if she's not willing to go for that then I would highly think that maybe the time has come for her to switch to jazz or something other than pop/r&b, something that could help her rediscover her voice and herself. We've all seen how great she sounds in jazz and she's very knowledgeable in the genre. She can do a jazz/blues album where she can give her all and talk about topics that maybe she hasn't been able to speak about in her regular music. Mariah will always be considered a legend and her name will always pop up whenever people speak about vocalists, but I think the time has come for her to really figure out what she's going to do from now on.

G.G. / the reality (48,218) by Edward from USA
G.G., I couldn't have said it better than that. Mariah's voice is completely unpredictable and out of control. It is so funny to see how many are demonizing Nick even for her bad performances, but when Nick wasn't around, what was the excuse? She's supposed to be in a good place vocally, but then this. What happened was that Nick held her over the phone with divorce matters, it was cold, she couldn't hear herself, Nick put something in her tea, none of her 20 nannies showed up to care for the twins, she just had an off day. How long are we going to keep being just like the "yes people" she has around her? Stripping the music away from the performance, one can realize how bad that was. But enough with this horrible comments, let me be a good lamb and say: "Everything was on point, those haters should just go away. Mariah's voice is in great shape and has always been." Hate the media, but only when they tell it like it is, Mariah does something about it.

The weather (48,217) by Manny from U.S.
I don't like to criticize Mariah but I feel the need to say this. For the tree lighting performance I noticed the back up singers had winter clothes on (scarfs, coats) and Mariah had a dress on, exposing her neck and chest. It's too cold to be dressing like that and expect to have a good voice. She did the same thing for the New Year's performance. The back up singers were all covered up and she had a dress. I think she should cover up to sound better.

Did anyone else see? (48,216) by nikki from usa
Now, there's an "isolated" vocal track out so you can hear every flaw the music covered. This is really above and beyond. Only someone from the show would be able to do that. TMZ claims a lot of things, but as others have said, we don't know. Mariah said it was beyond her control and I still question to what happened with the dark ensemble and the shades. The AI tape leaking to TMZ. Mariah's forced to do this live last minute, the media embellishes as it always does, but now there's an isolated track available? The media have always been negatively oriented, but this is overboard. It also can't completely be done by the media. Japan's performance leaked, but her last one in Brisbane seen crickets. This was so-so, but now we can hear every flaw because it wasn't terrible enough on its own to truly criticize. Is Mariah's ability to actually sing a threat or something?

Mariah's performance at Rockefeller (48,215) by Joe from United Kingdom
Here's the issue, yes people do look out for the negative more then the positive when it comes to Mariah performances but to be honest it's because she has an amazing performance when nobody is actually watching but when all eyes are on her it just don't go to well. I'm always worried when she's about to do a televised performance because I know if it doesn't go well the media can't wait to speak on it. And then two days later she'll do a great non televised performance but nobody sees it. I don't know if it's nerves or what but this has been a pattern in how she performs for years now. It's the same thing that happened with the tour, the first night all eyes were on her it was bad then she improved drastically but by then only the lambs are looking out for it. Please perform well where it actually counts. This will just be another performance like last year when I just pretend it didn't happen and move on. Hope I don't sound to harsh.

G.G. / facing the truth (48,214) by Marissa from USA
I'm with you G.G. I'm sick of these excuses. If shaky performances were extremely rare for Mariah I would look for an outside circumstance to blame as well, but this is nothing new. There have been numerous performances that I've cringed at even when she was indoors, was in perfect health (no colds), etc. Her voice has changed. Period. I will always be a lamb, watch her interviews and performances but let's just face reality. I know that a lot of people are trying to hype up the performance because they know that when MC gives a bad performance it makes us look bad, but come on now.

G.G., Badr (48,213) by Stacey from USA
Well said. Your thoughts are spot on. The part where she sings "I hear those sleigh bells ringing", she moved away and cut out during the word "sleigh". At that one moment, I can see the parallels some Twitter posts made comparing the voice to the beginning of her tour. Granted, she killed the rest of the tour. I don't know. It's sad to think one of the greatest voices, greatest careers with accomplishments few would hope to even come close to matching, is being talked about like this. MC came back with a vengence with TEOM after the debacle that was Glitter and ok performance of Charmbracelet. Yet, MC got it together. She had a good group of people around her and she killed it with that era. I think if she were to surround herself with good people, get with a good management team, take a break, I have no doubt she could come back and shut up her critics again.

No excuses, just the facts (48,212) by nikki from usa
Last year, her Rockefeller performances were flawless and so was her duet with Buble. How was her National Tree Lighting performance? All those shows were done in the same month. She was able to sing beautifully and then her voice just died at the end of the month? There were circumstances clearly, because that wasn't her norm. How about her first performance in Japan and her last in Brisbane? Mariah has good and bad days like everyone else. Fans keep saying she can't sing anymore, but then sooner or later she slays a song indisputably live and these same people are shocked. Until another bad day comes around that is. Mariah Carey is Mariah Carey at 44. It's a strange phenomena that she's forever supposed to sound like she's 22, this only applies to her. Elvis, Sinatra, Brocelli, and Tony Bennet never sounded the same as their younger years. Mariah in the 90's was 100% about her career. Mariah now is concerned with being a mom, her personal life, and singing. She's not 100% in it at the moment. But, when Mariah is in love with life once again is when the music flows, the perfectionist returns, and she'll be back on top.

Performance (48,211) by Jenny from South Africa
I'm surprised to see so many people think she sang badly. I thought 95% of it was great. Maybe certain parts she didn't go for the belt or high note but she still sounded great. The intro was perfect. I can't believe someone said it sounded like the opening night of the Elusive Chanteuse tour. That's completely off base in my opinion. Maybe we all hear things differently.

On and off / hot and cold (48,210) by Reuben Walton from United States
Twitter was lit up yesterday evening with thousands of cynics declaring "she's over/needs to retire/it's done/her ship has sailed" etc. The thing about only noticing the negative is so true. It's like they either don't notice the good performances, or they do but then they immediately flip the switch off and make the same declarations as soon as there is one bad performance.

Mariah hate (48,209) by B from USA
Mariah has always been criticized by the media for her tours and live performances. This isn't something new. Even during the Daydream world tour she was accused of lip-syncing and they also talk about her antics and lack of stage presences. She sang beautifully at Christmas in Rockefeller. She failed to hit a few high notes but the rest was one of her best.

That Mariah refuses to walk on carpet. That was a good one, lol. She's the floating elusive diva.

Christmas in Rockefeller Center (48,207) by B from USA
Some of the high notes were a little pitchy or flat but the rest was great. I loved it. She slayed it. Those moments are forgivable and she proved she still she has her voice.

Thoughts (48,206) by Dove from USA
People are going to say mean things no matter what. Sometimes I look at the comment section of Taylor Swift articles, she gets bashed big time too, and she's the it girl right now. I was watching a Sia interview, when she was on Howard Stern, she was talking about how she didn't want to be famous because there are parts of it she didn't like and I could totally relate. I couldn't do it. People think they have a license to say whatever they want about you and criticise everything as if they're flawless. Sometimes I watch people at the airport or at the mall and there are very few people who look like the people we see in movies and magazines. Mariah is a 10. I wish people respected her and enjoyed what she has to give us. Or if they have nothing nice to say, say nothing. Tony Bennet doesn't sing like he used to but people don't slam his voice or wrinkles or grey hair. If she's tired of fame maybe she can just slow down and become a studio artist and focus on preserving her legacy. She doesn't need to tour anymore if she doesn't want to. If/when she gets the performance itch she can have small concerts in New York. It's not like she needs the money. I enjoyed her performance a lot and the audience in the clip seemed to enjoy it too. I appreciate her but it bugs me so much that other people don't. I see her getting slammed for any little thing while other artists can release horrible work but all the articles say only good things about them.

AIWFCIY Rockefeller (48,205) by Lee TS from USA
I thought it started out well but it was less than stellar. There's a video that shows her "mic" voice only and well it's just a complete and total mess. I hope she'll pull through with the Christmas shows. Mariah looked gorgeous but the only thing that was off was her makeup, her cheek looked horrible on camera like a glob of paint. I suspect it's the same makeup artist she used on tour who had MC looking like a ragamuffin. Let's hope she gets invited to perform next year.

Mariah live at Rockefeller Center (48,204) by NHYTG from nyc
I don't think this perormance was her best but it wasn't that bad either, I enjoyed it. These days it's o so easy to diss Mariah for everything she does wrong in so many people's opinion. At least she had the guts to sing live. I wonder what Katy Perry, Rihanna or Taylor Swift would have sounded like doing such a difficult song live in these circumstances. I don't think they would have done it much better. It looks like the audience has had a good time, better than those behind their computers.

Live performance (48,203) by MimiLamb from Germany
We all know the minute Mariah performs it's either a hit or a miss. What I don't get is the backlash afterwards. Everytime it's treated like it's the first time it happened. Come on now, that's ridiculous. At this point it doesn't matter what happens, a lot of people can't get out of their negative mindset. When all is well people don't pay that much attention and are quiet but the minute something goes wrong, like not showing up (reason not known, while these media outlets aren't trustworthy) or not giving a flawless performance everybody is present to give their 2 cents. For me that is the sad part and not the performance she gave, she had better ones yes, but worse as well. I sometimes feel so ashamed how fans think and act more then I'm ashamed of a bad performance.
