Evolving (hopefully) (48,268)
by Nicky from Jasmine's Sofa
| |
|
|
I've said this before about her situation at the launch of her latest album, I think this shattering of her perfect image is the best thing that can be happening to her. Every singer, every artist, every person needs to evolve and change. It is natural and healthy. It's gotten to the point that it almost looks painful for her to keep up the image, the facade, and maintain all this pressure. It is the reason that she handles so much heat. She is competing with a version of herself that no longer exists and remains perfect. No one can succeed at that. If Mariah were to evolve artistically, we could enjoy some great bluesy, smoky, jazzy music in a lower register. I'd die for an album of Mariah and a piano. Possibly even some Sade-esque (not to compare, but just as a musical reference) music and tone that speaks on her favorite topic: love. Giving her body a break with beautiful materials that are non-constricting, yet still elegant. Embracing the rasp in her voice for maybe some rock tunes or neo-soul. There is so much that is possible. If only she'd let go of what she has already nailed. As this image crumbles, hopefully she will embrace more of her present-time self.

Mariah's weight (re: Shelly) and voice (re: Nikki) (48,266)
by Badr from USA

I'm ok with Mariah's weight. At the end of the day, the important thing is that she's healthy. However, I don't think she fully embraces that figure, case in point the recent photoshoped pictures. She also wears tight clothes that, with a few extra pounds, are not that flattering. I'm not saying she should be extremely skinny, I admire Mariah for having her own conviction, but losing a few pounds would make her look even better. In regards to her voice, Nikki makes an excellent point. Her voice is delicate. I remember she once said that, during the Daydream tour, she could only do certain number of concerts per week, the rest of the time she would be in vocal rest. I wonder why she drastically changed that, by doing back to back performances without a break. Again, Mariah needs a break.

Mariah, Rihanna and the other phony (48,265)
by Edward from USA
| |
|
|
Consistency doesn't constitute perfect singing. Nobody is expecting Mariah to sing like back in the 90's. When she sings live and well, no necessarily perfect, nobody complains. She is criticized because, just like Whitney, her voice is what she is known for, no matter how many songs she's produced or written. Katy and Rihanna weren't ever marketed as great singers, but the contrary could be said about Mariah, Celine, and Barbra. Pretending that the "Huge Flashy Pink Elephant" is not in the room won't make it go away. At the end of the day, Mariah makes an effort when people don't sugarcoat things, e.g. first Elusive Chanteuse concert reviews. She improved from the second show on. If people hadn't complained, she probably would've kept on thinking that she was killing it when she clearly wasn't. There's not a conspiracy to sabotage Mariah, people just hold her to higher standards than those other phonies. This is about consistency, no perfection.

I am not a delusional lamb and I agree with everything you said. Anthony, I agree with you too. I am going to the December 20th show too and am so excited to see this woman again but at such a special time. I think her performance was fine. What do people want? She can never seem to catch a break. What do people think after over 20 years of using something it will sound the same? And I am sorry, take any artist and remove the music and backup singers especially when they can't hear themselves and tell me what you hear? That goes for Beyonce and all the other "can do no wrong artists". I am sick of how MC is treated in the press. She is a living legend and the fact is she has nothing left to prove. The fact that she is gracing the tree lighting stage with a modern absolute classic is a gift. God forbid something ever happened, all these AP sites would be the first to claim she was a living legend and how she paved the way for all to follow. Add that in the fact that her private life is in shambles and yes that does affect her voice. Last years Washington performance didn't sound half as good as this years. I am sick of the witch hunt people have on MC. Who would leak a performance of just her voice? Who is out to get her? Hmmmm. I will always have Mariah's back and no I am not delusional. Can we just say how beautiful MC looked by the way? Her body has curves in all the right places. And who says you have to be a stick to be beautiful? For having twins she looks amazing. I am just so proud she went out there live and sounded as good as she did. I would like to see half the people behind computers do what she did live on national TV in the cold and hitting notes you did 20 years ago and sound like you did in your early 20's. NBC is lucky she performed the #1 Christmas song on their special. No matter what any of you say, she is a living legend and is a class act. I do believe nerves played a part as well. The longer she performed The Elusive Chantuse tour the more comfortable she became and sounded great. Whatever transpired the night before obviously had her upset and the timing was a little too perfect for her to have missed the chance to cover any flaws by a pretaped performance. Whatever, MC I can't wait for the 20th. Bring Dembabies out.

My two cents (48,262)

Even though there are a few that claim MC is the second coming and never does anything wrong, I am glad to see an objective conversation about her voice and the NBC performance. I have to admit, I was very happy she sang 100% live. That in itself was a feat. No she didn't sound perfect or even good, but anyone with an ear can tell she has a lot of voice still left. It is not over. What I can't understand for the life of me is why Mariah Carey is still nervous, fumbling with her ear monitor, unable to sing in the cold, can't deal with a divorce (her second) etc? She is considered one of the best vocalists of all time. Mariah Carey. I don't think some of you lambs get what that name is supposed to evoke. Sure everyone has a bad day. Sure she wasn't the worst thing ever. I don't understand why she can't just have a performance where she just sings straight without frills and then doesn't get the flack. You all know I have been very vocal about Mariah tailoring her new songs and live performances to how her voice is performing now. No one on that show sounded as bad. No one in the world lamb or otherwise would consider any of them as great of a singer as Mariah Carey. So why the excuses? She needs to strip down the ensembles, the splashes, the vocal acrobatics and just be an artist and sing well enough to not inspire the internet hate. I love her but by God defending her to nonlambs is becoming a full time job.

Unlike most fans on here I won't be joining the media in slagging Mariah Carey off on her NBC performance. Instead I'll be revisiting all the festive moments that makes Christmas great and the way Mariah revolutionized the music we listen to during our favorite time of year, press play to join me.This isn't the easiest time for Mariah and her family along with working the next project in her career midst the unfair scrutiny she has always experienced. She's out here working, giving lambs shows to go to, just stepped off a successful tour and surely getting new music and moments planned for 2015 as we speak. Get back to wrapping Christmas presents, sipping on your cocoa and press play on either of her two Christmas albums.

Mariah in the news (48,259)
by DK from USA
| |
|
|
Hello lambs. This is the first time I am messaging here, although I visit almost daily in reading news updates and commentaries. Recent coverage of Mariah's performance at Rockefeller is mind boggling. There seems to be a calculated effort in minimizing everything she does. For reputable media sources to post a stripped down version of her performance without background music and vocals seems like a direct attack on her (in which case Cindi Berger or whoever is her on PR camp needs to wake up and keep on top of things) or perhaps it's just a sign of the times, where people enjoy the building and breaking of celebrities in this ADHD human era we live in. I think it's combo of both factors. I hope Mariah continues to use her inner strength to carry on; she must have developed thick skin over the years. It's a ruthless industry after-all. She's often said that "music has saved her life", I truly hope she finds inspiration in making new music to feed her soul and for the enjoyment of the rest of us who genuinely appreciate her artistry.

A bit of a rant (48,258)
by Jon from Netherlands
| |
|
|
It really can't be easy to be Mariah. When you get to such a high level it must be hard to drop from that, specially when people love to knock down stars from their podium because it makes them less frustrated with their lifes. And if you are a woman you are not supposed to be sucessful for too long. As a "pop star" ages there is a process of accepting that you are not as young, or marketable or in as good vocal shape as you were. I fear Mariah is not going through that process as she should. It's hard for everybody to accept certain things as we age but for those that are extra insecure it's extra hard. It's ok to criticize Mariah in the press, the problem is that you never see the other side. Where's the recognition for someone that has done so much for so many? That actually has (an humongous) talent. That actually works hard at what she does. I'm sure it would be easier for her if people were fair. They are not. In the end of the day Mariah suffers mostly from one curse: herself. How can she live up to best voice that was ever recorded? She set the standards so high even she can't reach them. It's sadly ironic. In a way Mariah should leave Mariah behind. It feels like she is competing with herself. Let that girl go and embrace the woman. The woman has an amazing voice, beautiful to hear but it's a different voice. Btw I thought the Rockefeller performance was ok and the intro was nicely done. Sorry for the rant.

Have you guys ever noticed how the people who are bashing Mariah's vocals, weight, image, songs, parenting, acting skills, etc are all the very same people she wants nothing to do with anymore? They are the ones who were talking shit about her for no good reason and then they're surprised she doesn't even mentions their name. Why are you so obsessed with Mariah if you ain't even a lamb?

This is a fan site. A messageboard dedicated to all things Mariah. Her latest performance wasn't terrible, she sang beautifully. Yes, she failed to hit the high notes and got a little pitchy but she recovered and finished it on a high note. Until the hate dies down I'm taking a break from visiting this site. It's always negative. Some of you are never, ever happy.

Honestly, what do people want from Mariah? (48,250)

If she lip-syncs during a performance, social media goes on a rampage. When she sings live and doesn't sound exactly like 1990-1996 social mediaites are ready to rip her a new one and bring her legacy into question. To me, that steals all the joy out of watching a performance in the first place. Last night was a live performance. I appreciate when live performances "sound" live. Did it sound flawless? No. But, when I watch her sing, I don't do it because I want to point out how bad she sounds. I don't expect her to sound like she did on the 1994 recording. I get that the vocal wasn't perfect, but it certainly wasn't horrendous either.

Here's a performance of 5th Harmony singing AIWFCIY. Now I hope you guys won't be shady and dismiss them, at least I did at one point. Baby, I agree with you 100%. Mariah's voice is in great shape and always has been. People don't understand that Nick put some drown-her-high-notes powder from a NY bodega in her tea so she couldn't perform well. And there was a fan in the audience that gave her the eye too. I agree with you that her performance was phenomenal, one of a kind. Such haters should go away. Baby, don't let the haters make you go psychotic, it is not worthy and it might affect your health. Mariah's going through a tough time (48,247)

With people bashing her voice, raising kids, and a divorce Mariah's probably been having a really crappy last few months. I really hope things can change for her. She probably using the lambily as crutch for support. It sucks to see her so sad. She might look happy right now but to quote her "she smiles through a thousand tears". Here's to hoping that Mariah will see better days soon.

Mic feed / voice condition (48,246)
by Darryle from USA
| |
|
|
I think the performance was so so. Not good, not great, but not terrible like some are making it out to be. She missed the previous one where you can pre-record your performance but she still wanted to perform so she did it live knowing the condition her voice is in so I commend her for that. But, her voice is in bad condition. She cracked a lot during the performance and even cleared her throat after the whistle. Mariah's got to start taking care of her voice. Her voice isn't gone, it's just in horrible condition. In 2013 or 2012 I think she was still touring and she sounded really good. But now her voice is terrible. Not because it's gone but because of things like drinking too much and no vocal rest. I hate to admit it but Mariah's damaging her own voice. When Mariah cuts down on the splashes and goes back to humidifiers vocal rest and warm ups I think we'll see a big improvement.

"The" performance (48,245)
by Anthony Basco from Cardiff, Wales

What the hell is up with this planet? Mariah is an incredible singer/songwriter, and, regardless of potential vocal issues that may or may not be repairable, she is an incredible artist for so many reasons. She is also worthy of being an idol; she doesn't do drugs, she doesn't fall out of clubs drunk, she doesn't bad mouth or belittle and she holds herself with a grace and class that is seriously lacking in so many others. I think the reason the world media hates on her so much is because they really do think she is perfect, or perceive her as so, and because they could never hope to reach even a tenth of her class they instead hate her. I'm sick to death of hearing Mariah-bashing. I will be one of her Warrior Lambs, and the naysayers be damned.

Fantasy Remix vs YDKWTD (48,244)

Hey lambs. So stepping aside from the negativity, I'm currently listening to the Fantasy Remix feat. ODB and I suddenly realized how similar YDKWTD sounds to it. From the opening vocal runs by Mariah with the guest rapper speaking over it, to the groovy dance beat, to the rapping style, it just reminded me so much of this classic remix. I wonder if Mariah drew major inspiration from it.

Mariah the vocal baby angel slayer (48,243)
by Baby from Dreamville...Where There's No Beginning & There is No End
| |
|
|
So now Mariah's vocals are suffering from denial but it will all go away if she just stops making excuses? What excuses has she made and when? You'd think every time Mariah didn't hit a belted G5 a baby angel dies in Heaven the way some of you want her crucified. In whose universe is that sentiment even remotely sanctioned lamb behaviour? The Rockefeller performance was great. No one in the galaxy sings AIWFCIY like Mariah. No one. Same goes for every other song in her catalogue. Ask DJ Clue. That's why fans of lesser singers get so damned pressed that even when Mariah doesn't sing every note perfectly she still slays them all on their best day. It's a free world so go ahead and be a hater for life if that's what makes you happy. But I'm a lamb for life and loving it. *plays the Glitter soundtrack*

Eternally 12 vs elusively 21 / Nick Cannon (48,241)
by Baby from Dreamville...Where There's No Beginning & There is No End

|
Last night Nick favourited this on Twitter: "Did Nick Cannon get Mariah's voice in the divorce?" It got de-favourited sometime in the last 12 hours. Nick Cannot's such a douche he gives Tommy a run for his money. It's funny how random people want Mariah to be an alcoholic so bad they'll make up rumours and spread it like manure. She couldn't possibly be emotionally and physically affected over things that have been going on in her personal life. She's been suffering from broken bones and a broken heart since at least last year. People who won't see that are obviously not lambs. All they want her to do is sing-sing like it's 1996. They'll dog Mariah for her eternally 12 spirit like she's promoting teenage-pregnancy, gang-violence, drug-abuse and unsafe sex but it turns around and salivate over her early 20's. They Mariah hate, it's like it's a fetish at this point.

In a polite society (48,240)

It does seem personal how the media portrays Mariah. What do they get out of leaking the isolated vocals and publicly humiliating her? We all heard it, we know her voice has changed since 1994, can't we just celebrate her for all she's accomplished the last 24 years? Another thing I've noticed is that in almost every article they use really unflattering pictures of her. It's almost dehumanizing. I can easily find flattering pictures using Google search, why can't they? And a lot of interviewers are super rude to her. One that I watched again recently is when Mariah went on The View to promote MOAIA. Barbara W. was being super rude and asked her if Nick had proposed to her. This was before Tommy Mottola's book came out where he wrote that Mariah had proposed to him. Then, she brought up condescendingly that Mariah's dog had pooped in the dressing room. There is one girl who goes on every Mariah video on YT and leaves the nastiest comments. Go to any Mariah video and you'll see who I'm talking about. Does she have a job? Is putting Mariah down her job, or does she just hate her with a passion just because? Sometimes people's minds are tired and they're swayed by the subtle power of suggestion. When one person leaves a mean comment other people start agreeing and it snowballs. We need to be strong and think for ourselves.
