Nick (45,604)
by Dove from USA

I agree that a lot of these songs sound like they're about Nick. I think he works a lot because he wants to provide for his family, and not just mooch off of Mariah, and I respect that about him. Whenever he talks about her in interviews, it seems like he truly loves her and admires her. But all that working may also hurt their relationship because they're apart so much. I think he's really good for her and balances her out. Whenever I see them together her face is so calm, and at peace, and she looks enamored him too. I agree that if she doesn't like him talking about their private life he should respect that and not do it. I don't think he tarnished her image because when he talks about her most of the time it's funny and makes her seem more relatable. You'd have to be a down-to-earth person to be married to him. I don't think he should have said he slept with Kim K or talked about past g/f's but he was on Howard Stern and probably felt pressured. I don't think he's like KFed and Britney because it seemed like that guy was giving her drugs and just looking for a meal ticket. Nick is super healthy and doesn't even drink. Before Mariah was all about her career; when she married Nick she was enjoying being in love and then she had the kids and wanted to take care of them. Maybe Nick did have something to do with the decline of her career but I think it was for good reasons. She started having a real life outside of work. I think the ideal situation would be for Nick to support Mariah with one last huge comeback. Go on tour with her and everything. Then she could kind of retire: move with Nick to California and just do indie records for fun while helping him realize his dreams.

I misunderstood why you brought up the starving kids comment, I thought you were saying that all stars make dumb remarks sometimes. But anyway, I'm glad Mariah didn't say it. Yeah, I never like when she shades any other artists, why even mention them. Most of the time she doesn't though. Why do interviewers always have to bring up other artists? It's annoying and uncomfortable. If MC wants to talk about other artists she'll bring them up herself. There have been so many female artists that were supposed to be "The Next Mariah" who have come and gone. I wish Mariah had the respect she deserves but sadly, it seems you can't get it unless you die.

Money ($*/...) and starving children (45,602)
by Dove from USA

Mimi L, I like your idea. Jet plane would probably be better because that's what it says in the song. She does look gorgeous in those pics. She looks like she's a really healthy 30 year old, her skin. I loved the shoes and that her toned legs reemerged. I'm so glad she didn't really say that about the starving children. I had heard that before but I couldn't find any sources.

And I dream the impossible dream (45,601)
by Bill from the UK
| |
|
|
I never thought this was a reference to "The Impossible" from MOAIA, but more likely a reference to the very popular song if the same name, reading the lyrics they seem very Mariah-y about strife and fighting for what you know is right, even if it is to your detriment. I love the song, and it's on my wish list for Mariah to cover (and has been for years) and when I heard the line in Money I nearly died.
To dream the impossible dream To fight the unbeatable foe To bear with unbearable sorrow To run where the brave dare not go To right the unrightable wrong To love pure and chaste from afar To try when your arms are too weary To reach the unreachable star
This is my quest To follow that star No matter how hopeless No matter how far
To fight for the right Without question or pause To be willing to march into Hell For a heavenly cause
And I know if I'll only be true To this glorious quest That my heart will lie peaceful and calm When I'm laid to my rest
And the world will be better for this That one man, scorned and covered with scars Still strove with his last ounce of courage To reach the unreachable star

Shelly / Mariah and the starving kids (45,600)
by Edward from USA

|

Shelly, looking at the Katy Perry video now, I can see she was definitely being shady, then she tried to clean it up a bit talking about how she loved listening to Fantasy and Honey, but the shade overshadowed all that. I didn't quite like the comment Mariah made about Madonna because I knew that eventually there was going to be a time when Mariah wasn't going to be as popular either. I'm happy when she was asked again about Madonna's performance in 2006, she was more gracious and said Madonna was an icon, but Mariah was more mature then. As for the comment about the starving kids, it was definitely started in England on a tabloid and it eventually spread around the world, but she never said such thing. I posted it to support my statement about checking the veracity of the constant rumors and their sources before we start trashing anyone. Rihanna and Beyoncé have shown their respect to Mariah, and as for Katy Perry, she'd better enjoy it while it lasts, because nowadays, an artist is as good as the performances of their last single on the charts.

Spreading some love (45,599)

Can we all just take a moment and gush at the pictures of Mariah at the premier and the selfies she posted? She looks great. She is now looking like she did in 2005. Healthy and extremely glamorous and ofcourse gorgeous. I am so happy for her. Although she always looks good no matter what size, but she is insecure and I hope now she is feeling better about herself. I see the gloves have come off finally. They were fun for a while (the long ones only) but I can't say I miss them. The dress is sexy and not tacky. The necklace she is wearing is the same she sported in 2005. Hair looks great. She looks radiant and fresh. No where near 44. Mariah, "ah-ah you're beautiful".

Butterfly (45,597)
by B from USA
| |
|
|
I agree Butterfly is Mariah's best album and so does she. Butterfly is dark, moody, and elegant. She wrote some of her most introspective lyrics for that album. Close My Eyes is hauntingly beautiful with the vivid descriptions. The Roof, Breakdown, and Butterfly along with Close My Eyes, and Babydoll are career defining songs for her. She named her publishing company Beyond Idolization which is a reference to the "Do you care for me beyond idolization" line from Babydoll.

Another theory (45,596)
by B from USA

I think the love of Mariah's life is Jeter. They were a modern day Marilyn and Joe. She wrote about him on every album since Butterfly. The references to The Roof and My All are about him. The last song I was absolutely sure was about him was For The Record with all the reference.

Theories (45,594)
by B from USA

Mariah says in the liner notes to the new album that it's for the broken hearted. Has anyone else read that. When I did I thought of her relationship with Nick. She makes a lot of references to him. Thirsty: The Hollywood sign is calling you again is about his stints on America's Got Talent. Money: I dream the impossible dream which is a reference to the song The Impossible from Memoirs. Camouflage: I camouflage my tears and you wear your disguise which is about his persona as a comedian. Make It Look Good: He's a known player and looks really good. Faded: You're always somewhere but you're not there for me which is about their separation, they've spent a lot of time apart recently. I really think their having problems. I think it started after the birth of the twins. I found and was reading the USA Today interview she did when she was gearing up for the release of Memoirs and the interviewer said neither her nor Cannon speak about their marriage because of how private Mariah was. Boy, how time changes things. Over the past couple of years Nick has spoken candidly about their sex life, their problems, and about her and the children. He spoke about leaving Nicole from the Pussycat Dolls for Mariah and sleeping with Kim Kardashian. He even uses her for material for his jokes. I think she hates that and I don't blame her. He's tarnished America's sweetheart. I think he's to blame for the disconnect between her and her fans and the general public. Think K-Fed and Britney.

Dissing Madonna / African kids (45,593)
by Orkun from The Netherlands
| |
|
|
If I remember correctly, Madonna indeed dissed Mariah first and what we see on YouTube was Mariah's response. Madonna said : "I'd rather kill myself than being Mariah. She is so dumb." So Mariah replied. About being skinny and the African children comment, I remember back in the day, Mariah and her manager said that she never said such thing and it was all a big big lie.

Mariah never said that about the starving kids. Do you really think Tommy and her team would have allowed that. Get real. Katy is a joke, I'm over it. Mariah looks amazing, she lost the weight. She chose the perfect event to show off her hard work and honor a friend at the same time.

I love your idea for Money. Mine was actually really similar including the shopping and vacation part. But instead of a helicopter I had a private jet in mind and instead of the cut scenes being of her like the Bye Bye video (where she is on stage) I was thinking of the cut scenes being like the Honey remix (like she was with Diddy and Mase in the golden honey tunnel, dancing around like where she was wearing the brown crop top and skirt in your display picture) so she could be in another setting with Fabolous and Mike will and dance around with them, bumping and bouncing to the chorus and some rap parts. And at the end when Fabulous says "take your money" they she could throw a wad of cash at the camera and walk away.

Man, the Katy quote was real. Now I don't know if she is actually trying to sabotage Mariah's career, but the throwback comment was a diss. I remember reading it and thought it was probably taken out of context but I watched the interview and she meant it in a mean way and once she said that people around her chuckled a little and she was like enjoying it. Katy has a habit of picking fights with people even when the other party doesn't provoke her (or care for her either). She has done it with Gaga, Miley, Rihanna, and many others. She says controversial stuff to stay relevant because honestly her songs (even though she is a somewhat decent singer) are like the kind of songs which will come, get real popular for the season and then it falls off the face of the earth (unlike Mariah or Michael or Whitney whose songs to on to become classics). So Katy needs to stay in the news by picking up one sided fights with other celebs.

Katy Perry / Mariah mis-quote / Madonna feud (45,586)
by John from USA
| |
|
|
Mariah never said "Whenever I watch TV and see those poor, starving kids all over the world, I can't help but cry. I mean, I'd love to be skinny like that, but not with all those flies and death and stuff." She has taken a lot of crap for this quote over the years, and I can't remember the source, but this was debunked. Also, as far as Katy Perry, I think Katy is kind of an airhead. Sometimes I don't even realize she knows what she's saying. There's a quote in one of her songs where she says "Failing real hard at Mariah karaoke." I actually don't think she's a hater. I mean, if she was gonna mock Mariah in a video, the way I see it, Mariah must have clearly had an impact on her to acknowledge her (even like that). And yes, Mariah dissed Madonna, but Madonna said some very mean things about her in an article. Madonna said things to the effect that Mariah wasn't very bright and that she'd rather kill herself than be Mariah. Mariah herself in an early interview (Music Box era?) said "I see Madonna at parties, and she smiles and waves, but behind my back I know it's a different story." Madonna was a bully to her, and Mariah shut her down. Madonna deserved it, if you ask me.

Starving kids comment (45,585)
by Jenny from South Africa
| |
|
|
Hi Shelley. I think Edward was actually saying that the story about Mariah making that starving kids comment was false and maybe the stories about Katy trying to sabotage Mariah are also false. I think most of the gossip that is written about celebrities is just made up nonsense to sell tabloids. There have been so many false rumours printed about Mariah that I take things supposedly said by other celebrities with a pinch of salt unless I see it coming straight out of their mouths. The throwback comment Katy made could come across as insulting but she must have been a fan at some point to be naming her songs and describing her videos like that. It might not have been meant to sound insulting intentionally. If she was trying to be offensive then forget her, Mariah's records speak for themselves.

Has anybody actually heard or seen her make this comment because I hear that it's made up. Myth: Mariah Carey told an interviewer she always cries when she sees starving kids on TV, because she would love to be that skinny. Reality: Extremely false. In 1996 a satirical US website invented an interview with Carey, claiming she had told them: “When I watch TV and see those poor starving kids all over the world, I can’t help but cry. I mean, I’d love to be skinny like that, but not with all those flies and death and stuff.” Credulous British mags and newspapers reported the "quote" and the story spread like wildfire.

Favourite era Of Mariah's voice (45,583)
by Martyn from England, UK
| |
|
|
Mariah's voice has changed so much over her career, and there are various "eras" of hers that I liked both past and present, but I actually think my favourite era of her voice was in the Mariah Carey/Emotions/Unplugged era. Her voice is so light and effortless here, and whilst I appreciate the silkyness of the Daydream era and the powerful vocals she gave in the Glitter era, I will always class her first few years as her vocal peak. What do you guys think? (N.B. My all time favourite live performance is the Saturday Night Live rehearsal for "Vanishing".)

Re: Let's jump on the "Let's-Hate-Katy Wagon" (45,581)
by Dove from USA
| |
|
|
It sounds like a blatant diss to me. It almost sounds exactly like what Mariah said about Madonna in 1995. The difference is that Madonna dissed Mariah first and Mariah was probably offended and retaliating. Katy Perry is only a year younger than me and I remember Mariah from my childhood vividly, like it was yesterday. She was already a huge success. In Katy's documentary, it sounded like she wasn't allowed to listen to secular music growing up anyway, so what is she talking about? It was clearly done to make Mariah seem irrelevant. Her followers are mostly young and will follow whatever she says. Just like the little kids on the Mariah Vs Ariana video. They are told Mariah is a has-been so they mindlessly repeat it and believe it. But the same kids will say that Michael Jackson is "The King" and Whitney Houston is "The Voice". Regarding Mariah's starving kids comment: I couldn't find footage of it but to me it sounds like she really does feel badly for the starving kids, but then she tried to lighten the mood by making a joke which unfortunately was in bad taste. She was young and messed up but clearly it was a naive mistake and not a marketing attempt to sabotage anybody.

Voice during Butterfly era (45,580)
by Darryle from USA
| |
|
|
Butterfly is my favorite album/era so I may be slightly biased but I think that her voice during Butterfly was amazing. She'd just started whispering then so it was a smooth whisper that flowed like honey. Her runs were out of this world and they made each song she sung 10 times better. Her belts where top notch and really resonant. My favorite part of her voice was how raspy it was and how husky her lows where. Her lows and her rasp is showcased in her performance of "Over the rainbow/if you only knew".

Yeah, I guess what you said is more reasonable. I was just saying that comparing them during their debuts is unfair because there is no comparing, just an annihilation. So it's fair for both people, but unfair for Ariana. I don't know if that makes sense or not, but I just go with it.

I have to comment on one of the things you wrote: "I just can't explain how unfair that was for Ariana. I mean, I think it's fair when people compare her to present Mariah, but anything during the 90's, don't even bother." Why is it unfair? If you want to compare artists you have to do it when they were the same age. I think it's highly unfair to compare Ariana's (fresh) voice in her 20's with Mariah's voice (after being in the game for 24+ years) with 44. That in my honest opinion is totally unfair. This showcases how both were when they started and shows that there is no comparison really. Ariana can sing a nice tune no doubt, but it's just not the powerhouse voice Mariah has.

Money ($*/...) (45,576)
by Dove from USA

Coming in on a helicopter while looking super excited and amazed at the gorgeous scenery below, the look of awe that's on her face when she's admiring the angels on the ceiling and then looking outside the window at that breathtaking view, the joy of being able to give an amazing tip, rolling around on good sheets, shopping Pretty Woman style, walking into a restaurant looking like a queen and having everybody turn and admire you, ordering everything on the menu and really enjoying your food without a worry in the world, going skiing and base jumping (or for Mariah maybe a hot air balloon ride) spa treatments, gambling. I think it would make her seem relatable to see that she still enjoys and appreciates all the awesomeness that is her life. Not showing off, but really enjoying and appreciating it. It would also be cool if they cut to show scenes of her and Nick at their weddings looking happy and in love and having fun, maybe dancing at their wedding. And then also scenes of her singing this song (like in the Bye Bye video) in a concert and everyone singing back to her with their hands in the air. Then at the end she gets off the plane and Nick is there waiting for her with a car board sign that reads: Mrs. Cannon. I want Nick in the video because I really like him. I think this song is about him so I think it would be cool for her kids and grandkids to see one day. That's my cheesy (but I think sweet) concept. When I hear this song I think of all the amazing things and experiences money can buy, which makes me think of the movie Last Holiday starring Queen Latifah. I think it would be neat if Mariah remade parts of that movie for this video. Most of my favorite parts are in this trailer.

Bill, thank you. The whole first album is amazing. I've been playing it a lot lately. I was amazed to find that a lot of the best songs on that album were already written before she even signed to CBS records. Wow. RockyRoc, I went and looked for that video and you're so right. Ariana is very good but Mariah blows her out of the water. MC's voice just sounds so open, like she doesn't strain or struggle at all. Especially in the live performances back then.

I often feel the way you do about things concerning MC. I'm from the US and I know a lot of people who love Mariah. But, from my perspective my culture is filled with people who have the attention span of a gnat. You'd be surprised how many think her last album was Emancipation or E=MC2. Judging by her album sales it would appear her international lambs are far more devoted. If her album wasn't pushed back so many times it would have done better. Visibility is key and I don't mean tabloids. I've been listening to MC in interviews lately and I get it. The fans seem to have a problem with "letting go". Mariah isn't doing the usual with this album and she's not being seen. She's said at least 10 times now she's not interested in releasing singles because she wants this LP to be heard as a whole. People aren't getting it. This LP represents then and now. Every genre she's had a hit in and her favorite kind of music. People are surprised America The Beautiful was included, but lambs know that's the first song she sang live for the masses. I can't wait for her tour. The people who count Mariah out are the same that are shocked when she "comes back", as if she ever left in the first place.
