Scratching my head / WMA (44,223)
by Licia from USA

So if I like any of the songs one Me. I am Mariah I'm forcing myself to find a silver lining? Oh ok. That is a heck of a theory. God forbid any of us just might actually like the songs. Lol. Moving on to the other stuff that has me scratching my head. Now I can understand waiting a year or two for an artist to get their stuff together to my liking, but I don't see myself going through another 17 years and I'm still not happy with the music. Makes not an ounce of sense. Lol. Anyway the WMA awards will not be airing tonight for the American fans. They aren't really saying why. They said that Mariah arrived 4 hours late and if she did that was wrong, but I don't understand how that would keeping them from airing a prerecorded show.

I saw somewhere that first week sales predictions are 60-70 thousand. Is this true? That's low. MC and her team to promote the hell out of this album starting now.

So excited to see 2 awards in her hands, that means she won something else last night. Yay. Mariah wants to be seen as a true artist. A writer/producer. She references Marilyn Monroe as a brilliant woman, and she was, but this isn't the 1950's, 60's, or 70's. Women can do things now. Playing up the diva gimmick isn't doing her any favors with being taken seriously as an artist. She rarely talks about business or candidly speaking about her creative processes to the general public. If she did that people would take her more seriously, so when she does the diva thing it would be seen as a playful act rather than her true personality. This album isn't going to do much and it has nothing to do with quality. It doesn't matter who you are, anyone who continually pushes back their album is met with poor sales. Not actively promoting it just makes it worse. I agree MC is doing more behind the scenes things and just wrapping up her deal with this doomed label. Can you believe she's been on it as long as Sony already? I'm hoping after this she just develops her own or goes independent. Then, we'll see some promotion. Eminem's album sold over 700,000 copies for the opening week, so numbers are still very much possible today. But, MC was pretty clear about that not being her #1 priority with this project.

Ok, I get that you don't like it. But going as far to say that we're looking for a silver lining to every song, like we're making excuses? It's too much. You don't like it or think it's below par that's fair enough. But please, enough now trying to justify your dislike for it and also trying to demonstrate how Mariah didn't really bother with this album almost so you may come across as "right". The simple fact is many many people, namely her fans, love this album, to hell with sales etc. And owning and listening thousands upon thousands of times to her previous albums, we are allowed to think that this and some of the songs are incredible and her best. I'm sorry to address you directly. I can take you not liking it, I respect that you don't like it, but trying to find "scientific" reasons why your opinion that's it's not good is the right one is a little insulting. I'm 25 and have been with Mariah since 2012. Might not be as long as some of you lot, but she was the first artist I discovered on my own, and I have been a die hard lamb ever since, listening to everything, and importantly not liking everything she has done (for me, Rainbow sounds her least inspired and remains the least listened to album of hers). Marcel, I feel like your negativity has reached new lows, and I would politely invite you to "be nice or leave".

I knew you were writing back. Well, if we're getting that specific then I have to say that I am not a "fan" since fan derives from fanatic and hell I am not fanatical at all. But I follow MC and her music and am always willing for her to recover and to amaze me as she used to. It sounded rude to me like her routine of back in 98 those days you remember well when fans were jumping-out her wagon massively and she was like "if you like me fine, if you don't good-bye" and her "I hate Hero but I have to sing it" and all that stuff when she thought she's about to become the hottest hip-hop female star out there and sadly to her it never happened. Finding negativity is easy and denotes a negativity as well, because if I said I like the album, I like some songs I acknowledge she tried her best but am not amazed at all and then you only pick on that comment, then I wonder who the negative person is. Ok, this is a MC board so saying positive things is for granted. I live in denial and you use portray a pic of the "fake Mariah" (remember those arguments as well?) because her new back then "lambs" said you were a hater because liked "fake MC" (the girl next door image, big voiced Mariah) and were a fan sorry lamb just if you enjoyed her wild (to her then standards) image. Funny it seem now I have to hate Walter in order to be a MC fan. I'm not a lamb, sorry but that's derogative and sounds like someone that blindly obeys and follows like a sheep. I was one of the first to say I liked MIAM.

17 years... you have to be kidding me (44,218)
by Marissa from USA

I can't even fathom the fact that someone doesn't think Mariah hasn't put out anything great vocally since 97. What about WBT, Mine Again, DFAU, Fly Like a Bird, O Holy Night from MCIIY, etc. I'm just baffled right now as to why you would stick around as a lamb. Not trying to be negative, but her voice is only going to either stay the same or get worse as she gets older so why even stay tuned to her musical career? After all the great stuff she has put out I think it's official that you'll never be satisfied with anything she does musically.

The dress (44,215)
by Mimi L. from Empower Your Highlighter
| |
|
|
Although I agree with the person writing below about getting tired of all the black gowns, I have to say I am not a fan of the dress she wore while accepting the speech. Seriously, Mariah has access to the best designers and yet her outfits are not that great. Last year (especially during AI) she had some really great outfits, which were pretty, sexy and classy at the same time. I am guessing she wears the black ones to look slim, but she should seriously move on to colorful or gold/silver numbers. The award acceptance outfit was horrible. I get it that Mariah will always want to look sexy, but that dress did nothing for her. She could have instead opted for a long champagne gown with crystal work or whatever. She needs to draw the line between sexy and tacky. I don't understand how a woman who is so classy (the way she speaks, the way she moves, and everything) can end up in such ridiculous outfit. it's something I would expect Nicki Minaj or Lady Gaga to wear. Not Mariah. Anyways all that said, I am really looking forward to watching her performance and I am seriously concerned about the lack of promotions. Do they expect the album to sell just based on Mariah's brand? Because that won't happen unfortunately. At a time when the promotions should be at the highest level, we are barely seeing M anywhere. It's sad how somehow all her latest efforts are being ignored by the GP simply because her team is not making any efforts to get it any attention.

I have had the album for about a day now, and have listened to all of the tracks in full now. This album is so great and as a new fan, this is the first release that I have really been a part of which is great, I am enjoying hearing everyone's opinions. My favourite tracks on this album are Cry, Supernatural, YDKWTD and Heavenly, especially Heavenly. This album is great, so good. I am so pleased with it, the vocals are great as is the instrumentation/ production. I also need to say that One More Try is a standout. Now it gets really exciting for me, the promotion. I am really looking forward to interviews and live performances, especially the NBC special to air this week. Hopefully she will appear at the MTV Awards and AMAs etc.

I think the album is a contract fulfillment (44,211)
by Randy from USA

Guys, I am really thrilled that you guys like the album. However, the woman that crafted Right To Dream, Butterfly, My All, Languishing, Outside, Close My Eyes, Petals is not present on this one. I think this was a mash of all the tracks she has recorded to get her off the label. Look at the lack of promotion and when I went to her official website, it's the same layout it has been, the first video that comes up is Touch My Body and on her music page, the last album is MCIIY. There is nowhere to find the lyrics. She did every talkshow and late night show with Memoirs. With this one she has done very little promotion this week. I do think this will undersell Memoirs. I want MC to be successful but I think a lot of you want it so bad you have forced yourself to find a silver lining in every song when none of it is comparable to her previous work. I think there will be another album in a year or two on a new label that will feel more MC.

The Art Of Letting Go is an open door for disgruntled fans (44,210)
by Geronimo from USA
| |
|
|
I believe this song is about Mariah getting over her need to cater to fans who want her to be something she is not. Of course the lyrics read like a typical relationship song. But, you know what, she is the queen of the double entendre and she is telling fair-weather and "I miss Walter" fans that 1) she is tired of their non-sense "reverberating in my ears" and she wants you to 2) just "go to MiMi on your contacts, press delete" and then 3) move on to your favorite "Meteorite" and enjoy them until their 15 minutes of fame burns out. Further, did you notice how this is her first album that did not have an adult contemporary ballad thrown in for people who cannot get over her previous life working with Walter? That was also a hint. Take it and go.

Sam Smith (44,209)
by Jono from USA

Hey Lambs, sorry to sidetrack the conversation for a bit. I was wondering if any of you have heard of Sam Smith? He's a young British artist that's just coming up. I bring him up because like Mariah, there is something about the tone of his voice that just gets me emotional. This may be so far fetched, but I'm hoping they will do a duet someday, because I think it could be a classic. To see (and hear) what I'm talking about, look up "Stay With Me", either the studio or the SNL live version. Chills. We need artists like him and Mariah to remind people what actual talent is.

Sales (44,207)
by Jono from USA

Those numbers don't surprise me, I would have been surprised if she had been above 100k. The thing is, the days of massive album sales are gone. In today's world, everyone's attention span has been severely reduced due to technological advances and accessibility. Instant gratification is what everyone seeks. No one has time to sit down and listen to an album - heck, people don't actively seek out music videos anymore. Nowadays, opening 200k is considered huge, and is reserved for the gimmicky artists (I'm looking at you, Katy Perry and Miley Cyrus). Mariah will never sell TEOM levels, and it's not her fault. It's just the changing times. Like I said, I'd much rather her have low sales than having bad, generic, selling out songs. Also, since when does a public's reception of an album determine whether or not it's good? I mean, this is a society that worships Justin Bieber, One Direction, and Miley Cyrus.

When I read all the messages you've posted here, they are mostly very negative. I highly doubt you can call yourself a fan if you only like her the first 7 years and nothing she has done for the last 17 years. Maybe you're in denial, but I think you should face the truth: you're no longer a fan.

Nobody wishes her to fail (44,205)
by Marcel from Montréal, Canada

At least I don't. Actually I wish nothing but the best for her. I said It's been 17 year without any good vocally song, and yes, to me and it's my opinion she lost it vocally and when you hear something ok like this latest album we all know she won't be able to perform it live in a good way like she used in her, sorry but, her golden years. "She's 45 don't expect her to..." yeah, sure, but first Céline is older and vocally perfect and not alone, just one example and seconnd Mariah was just a tender 27th when she suddenly lost it and we all know she barely tours or promote, her out-of-the-USA performances are lipped always since 97 and this was a 5 years period of doing nothing but relaxing almost all the time, still she was in need of electronically improving her vocals on this album, which by the way I said it was a good album just nothing spectacular and a let down to me once again, but thankfully I stayed short on my expectations so it wouldn't dissappoint me that much. About her writing, well, dumb lately and that's something most people say about her songs and then the ghetto slangs sometimes are. Don't like Miley but would've loved her to do a wrecking kind of tune or one of my fave artists Pink's Just Give Me A Reason track. I still come here after 17 years because I don't breath MC and my life is plenty with and without her. I have a life so I can hear this and still buy and "wait" but I won't be depressed nor crying to her songs. Never did, never will. Still a real fan, never a lamb.

The question I will ask later in this post may be way off and in fact might even be offensive to some of us, so I apologize in advance to anyone who may find it so as I don't mean to ruffle anyone's feathers. To say LA Reid has nailed it this time would be an understatement. It's hard enough to stage a comeback for an artist with a career that spans decades who is alive, which makes it even more impressive that he was able to mastermind the MJ fever revival almost 5 years after his death, especially following the relatively dismal performance of his first posthumous compilation of material. Not to mention the fans are actually pretty much divided about the idea of releasing music after his death, so that definitely was an added challenge. But still, he and his team pulled it off really well. Now my polarising question is this: hypothetically, when Mariah is gone, will you allow her team to release her records posthumously? Would you be one of those fans who would agree and lap them up because every bit of Mariah counts? Or would you be one of those who think those records didn't make the cut for good reasons and just would rather that they remain unreleased?

Nothing good since 1997? (44,202)
by Alex from England
| |
|
|
I just can't sit this one out when I read that some people haven't heard anything good vocally since 1997 except for Lead The Way. I mean, sure, everyone is entitled to their opinion but I have one question then. Why still wait for Mariah to astound you for the past 17 years when she clearly no longer can. I mean, I do understand that her voice is not the same, that cannot be argued but saying that she hasn't put out anything good/amazing vocally in the past 17 years is just... I guess I just don't understand some people and what they actually expect. On another note, I've had the album on repeat for a week and now my mind is definitely made up. Favorites: YDKWTD, Heavenly, Faded, MILG and Meteorite. The ballads are definitely so 90's Mariah, I hope people asking her to give them a couple more ballads like the old days are happy, if not, you never will be. I like all the songs but I'll skip a couple of them in the long run but I can say she's given us a great body of work. I'm glad I never doubted her even though the leadup to the album was more than confusing. Welcome back Mariah, you're still the best.

I feel like Mariah should have promoted the album more, going on more talk shows and more magazine interviews. I know she's done some but not enough imo, she needs to be everywhere. Maybe the sales would've been better then. Not that it matters that much to me, as long as the album's good.

Angels Advocate (44,200)
by this_is_qhm from the Philippines
| |
|
|
Does anybody else as well feel relieved that the Angels Advocate album didn't get released at all? I mean, all of the "remixed" songs from that album were barely even touched at all. Like somebody else mentioned here earlier, all of them stink of the same lazy "cut-and-paste" routine. It makes you even wonder how this whole idea of a remix album was even concieved in the first place, let alone considered. It had "legacy tarnishing" written all over it. It's funny because it's almost as if Mariah forgot what "remix" means - ironic, considering she was responsible for some of the most memorable remixes (dance or hip-hop) in the 90s. Of the 5 songs that were "remixed", I feel like only Ribbon with The-Dream and Ludacris was the only one where the original song structure was altered the most (and that's not saying a lot, because they still retained the beat, just removed the lazy drone in the background). Even worse, there was no trace of a resung vocal to be found in any of the supposedly "reworked" material. Thank God this was shut down because it definitely would have been a massive commercial flop following the already underwheming performance of its parent album. Plus, the critics would have never let us heard the end of it.

Me. I am Mariah (44,199)

I would like to share my post in my FB. The long wait is over. Lambs around the world let's celebrate and say "Hail the queen and the voice isbBack. She is back. Mariah Carey has once again put out a great album." Yeah, the long wait is over and it's worth the wait. I have listened to the entire album, from "Cry." to "The Art of Letting Go" (since I have the deluxe edition in my iPhone) many times already and all I can say is perfection. You'll never press the skip button because each song is worth to listen. It's been a while since we heard from our Mimi and now here it is. A fresh music made specially by Mariah. She is not your diva who only sings but also writes her own songs, makes the melody, produces music and sometimes directs the video. If I am going to pick my top five songs from the album, it will be 1. "Dedicated" (ft. Nas) 2. "You Don't Know What to Do" (ft. Wale) 3. "Faded" 4. "Cry." 5. "Heavenly". Special mention to her cover of George Michael original, One More Try, she nailed it. Congrats Mariah.
