Me. I Am Mariah (44,171)
by Jono from USA

|

Happy day today, did my little tradition of going to the store and buying a physical copy of the CD. It sounds just as incredible as it did during the first listen, even more so now. As for chart positions, I really don't care how it does at this point. Mariah has nothing left to prove, and she has far outlasted many of her contemporaries. No one has had the career that Mariah has for the last 25 years. The difference between Austin and Mariah is that one is releasing their first album, a generic teen pop genre that has all the teenage girls (and some boys) spazzing out. That act is the new Justin Bieber, and will probably fizzle out in the next couple of years. The other is releasing their fourteenth studio album, and is being lauded by critics as one of her best. It is an art work, something that is timeless (and not just "fifteen minutes of fame") and will last forever. If Mariah debuts at No. 1 at this day and age in a youth-driven market, I will be pleasantly surprised. If she doesn't, I will not be upset - and I'm sure Mariah won't be either. At this stage it is about making good music that will last for generations to come, and not about chart numbers. I am so proud of our girl, and hope she does a killer WMA performance tonight.

So I went to BestBuy (yes I gave in) and I noticed so much difference from a CD and the Mastered for iTunes version. I don't have to blast my music as loud. Anyway, I ended up getting a iTunes version, Deluxe Version and Standard version which went to my supervisor and the assistant told me that most of the morning that all people have been placing orders for. So that brough a smile to my face and I said that's good, I'm glad to her that her album is selling.

As Mariah has said about J. Lo, I don't know her. I don't know who this kid is. Where did he come from? Did he join the illuminati for some fame? Lol.

Listening to this song her vocals near the end of the song sound like she did when she sung Joy To The World (St. John The Divine) live. I love it. I think at the WMA'S she should do a performance of Heavenly and showcase her voice and own that stage.

When you said you can't hear any of the old Mariah and for some that's good but for fans like you it's not, I agree because I can hear a lot of the old Mariah here. A hell of a lot actually. It's the first album I feel where her "old" and "new" personas not only meet but have joined into a super powered Mariah, like the power rangers, strong alone but combined unbeatable haha. I am genuinely not having a go or undermining what you say as I accept that's your opinion, but if I were Mariah reading your posts, I'd bang my head against the wall, like what exactly can she do for you to make you happy? I can't believe how incredible I feel the album is, and I feel a bit sad that you see nothing particularly good in it. Oh well. Tarraga, thanks for the shout out. Yep we have the same favourites haha. And I agree, best opener to an album, ever. Blown away from the very beginning. Listening to the album today, I was overtaken by Heavenly, especially the line "God is closest to the broken-hearted" or something to that effect. Sent shivers down my spine.

Hi guys, don't you find it interesting that there's not a lot of promo on iTunes? There's a banner there, but it still says pre-order. I don't really understand it. What's going on? I never expected this Mahone guy to be number one. Didn't even see him as competition outside of Coldplay's second week numbers. Should we be concerned? The World Music Awards are great, but they are not as big in the US from a ratings point of view, so outside of the special on Saturday there's nothing else booked which is concerning.

One More Try (44,164)
by Warren from Trinidad & Tobago
| |
|
|
Does anyone feel that this song was chosen because she is referring to the "teacher" as the music industry? She made the reference to "if" this was her last album etc. She would not have said that jokingly. So then to listen to where she focusses her emotion in that song, and keeping what has been happening to her it could very well be about that. Also, with the way she pays attention to album sequencing, with Heavenly right after, "coming so far to turn back now" could mean that she really isn't giving up on being on top again. Any thoughts?

Ugh the guy needs to be taken down. All the teenage girls in USA must be on a download overload from the moment he released the album. I'm happy to see that Mariah's album is atleast still at number 2, and ahead of Coldplay. The other 3 versions of the album are also grabbing chart spots in the top 200, so the total can put Mariah higher. Excited about the WMAs performance. I'm sure the publicity will boost the sales. So Mariah should focus on giving a killer performance. I hope the next single is announced very soon accompanied by a video of TEOM level.

Mariah's current voice (44,162)
by this_is_qhm from the Philippines
| |
|
|
Am I the only one who doesn't find the current state of Mariah's voice not that bad as a lot say it is? Yes, she may have lost the fluidity, power, fullness, and vibrance of her voice back in the 90s, but in turn she has gained grit and experience (like Whitney did circa My Love Is Your Love) that, in my opinion, serves her well, as she can now better convey emotions in what she sings, thus making them more believable than they would have sounded if she sang them 20 years ago. I'm not exactly equating the leathery rasp she has adapted with expression, but when she sings now, while it does sound a lot nasal, thinner, and more labored, it also sounds more convincing, thus making even some of her material which are "a bit too young" for her (Ribbon, Obsessed, Up Out My Face) somehow sound more age-appropriate (it works even better for her more lyrically/thematically mature songs). That's not to say she didn't know how to express emotions before, it's just that in the early 90s, she almost seemed like she was always trying to prove herself that she was always so technically impressive that it kind of overpowered the feelings in whatever she sang. Let's face it, Mimi (again, just like Whitney) did oversing a lot earlier in her career. That was the #1 complaint of critics and regular music listeners back then. I feel like Daydream was actually the first album that she learned that less could be more, and from then on, those complaints faded away. Just my two cents, though.

Nasal quality, "accent" (44,161)
by this_is_qhm from the Philippines
| |
|
|
Someone has asked about the nasal quality to Mariah's voice lately or that somehow she sounds like she's singing with an accent. I believe it's because Mariah's lung power can't quite sustain long notes now like she used to that she has to compensate by singing with her mouth open a bit narrower (to let less air out) and that in turn affects her enunciation (especially vowels).

And also so gladt o hear that Me. I am Mariah is sold out in Australia. Keep up the good work lambs.

Love MC and always will but not feeling this album (44,155)
by Anonymous from

Ok first things first. I adore Mariah and have been an avid fan since the mid 90's. My Mariah collection is huge and I'm very proud of this, as well to be a lamb. I'm very open minded and love various genres of music but ultimately, Mariah is and will always be the, crem de la crem. I heard the album yesterday and I have to say, I'm not in love with it. When I first heard Triumphant I thought, tune - especially when loud, yeah I admit it was a bit more rap then expected but I still loved it (should have dropped Rick Ross as his lyrics were pointless). Then I heard Almost Home and thought, wow Mariah is taking it to the next level, experimenting with new avenues of production (both songs I thought were poorly misrepresented and given the recognition they deserved). Then I heard Beautiful and could not stop playing it on repeat, I was almost certain that the track would be big, even bigger than Obsessed. I believe this album is personal to her but doesn't Mariah say that about every one she's realised in the last 10 years? In a nut shell the album is for the critics and the fans, although I am a fan I don't find this ground breaking or stimulating. I've never been a fan of Mariah's who base their interest on record sales or number 1's, I go with what I feel when I hear a music. I have the right to my opinion especially with the amount of money I've spent over the years on her music and concerts alone. I hope Mariah smashes it and proves me wrong and if she does good on her, I'm just saying how I feel. Will always love Mariah but her music is somewhat confused and conflicted, she squeezes in too many directions in one song. Instead each song should have one direction. Much love people.

About "throwbacks" I meant that there are things in her songs that sound like a lot of things we heard in previous albums. Not specifically coming from the first self titled album itself or Daydream purely. I think this album has a wide variety but from my point of view (after following Mariah for all her career since day one) there is nothing I can say "wow that's new", that's all I meant. I would put this album next to TEOM, overall great songs, great potential with just some laid down songs. Hope it's clear now.

Singles (44,153)
by Lee from UK

If Mariah does go down the singles route, what are you predictions for singles and in what order? Even though this album doesn't scream single, single, single to me, I have my own idea of where Mariah is going with this. (Not counting #Beautiful, TAOLG or YME.) 1. Thirsty 2. You Don't Know What to Do 3. Make it Look Good / Money (S*/...)

I can't hear any of the old Mariah in any of the songs on the new album. Some people may think this is a good thing but for fans like me it's a bummer. The only song I replay is Make It Look Good and I hope that this makes it as a single.

Good tunes, great album (44,151)
by May from Denmark
| |
|
|
We are all sharing our take on the album so here goes mine. I give it 3. 5 stars out of 5: here are my reasons. It's very obvious the production took a lot of care in the making except for BGK. The editing was very poor, like a "cut-copy-paste" type of effect. It'd have been nice to have a back and forth from Mariah with the featured artist, like a conversation, to make the song more interesting. "It's a wrap" was poor as well, I was hoping for a duet almost like Whitney-Mariah. I was hoping for something innovative but the songs are like throwbacks. Two songs reminded me to melodies I've heard in the 80s, "Cry." is one of those but is beautiful still. It's like Mariah can't move forward because die-hard fans always want "oldies come back" and it feels like she stays resting in her comfort zone and got used to that. Meteorite is a great club tune, it definitely describes artists of today. Supernatural is cute, bit creepy first listening with the children giggles (too many 80s horror movies here haha, those were the days) the ending was adorable to the max. Yet another song that has the "old vibes". As an atheist I don't feel identified with Heavenly but I think is awesome how she brought back all that soul. The rest of the songs are nice, I only disliked one and thar is "Money", very "Glitter". I purchased some songs but not the album, as a whole I don't see myself listening to it all the time. The deluxe version is disappointing. Strong work set. Won't disappoint old fans.

Chart position / Walter A (44,150)
by Licia from USA

I for one don't give a care how she does on the charts. I never have and I never will. If she's number one cool. If not that's still cool. She has a solid album. None of us know how she will do, but it won't hurt to wish for the best even if you don't like the album. Also can we get over Walter A? She does not want to work with him. She's made that perfectly clear. If you are still wanting and waiting for that to happen then you will forever be unhappy with any music she releases from now until she quits. You might as well move on to what will make your ears happy.

I really love Faded, One More Try and Meteorite (44,149)
by Jamie from UK
| |
|
|
It took a few listens before I fell in love with the beautiful Faded; modern R&B gold. The climax especially blows me away every time, very reminiscent of her vocals in TEOM era. Collectively the album almost sounds like a merge of TEOM and Music Box. I can tell I'm enjoying it more than I did E=MC2 and Memoirs when they first came out, so 8.5/10 from me.

I bought the deluxe edition and I'm not exactly pleased. TAOLG is my favorite Mariah song so I like that and The Wrap is good. It feels like it should be on the album. I like the talking as an intro, and even though it's not resung it sounds good. BGK is not worthy of being on the album. I would have rather seen Save The Day instead. While R. Kelly is an amazing singer he doesn't fit well with this song. His lyrics are ok but the echos on his voice and the way they cut out the I'm a la la la la la laugh part and lazily edited his part in sorta ruins the song. The album at this point is already over an hour long so why not just add a thirrd verse and do a chorus. I'm really disappointed you get together 3 of the best R&B artists and you get mediocre results.

Orkun's comments are really at the very low end of negativity. You shut the door like big time. We wish this album all the best and as loyal lambs, we wish any of the bangers "Thristy", "Fade", "YDKWTD", "Meteorite" to reach #1. Or maybe 3 of them. Mariah can and this album can.

Please don't ruin the moment for people who actually loved and appreciate the album. It's your opinion and you are entitled to it but I seriously don't understand what you hate so much about the album. I think it caters to the diverse tastes of her fans. There's something for everyone. I can understand if you hate some songs, but the whole album? Seriously? The critics and most importantly majority of her fans have loved the album and place it in their top 5, even going as far as comparing it to Butterfly and Music Box. Anyways so did you predict Bangerz will be a number 1 album? I'd say Mariah has a really good chance provided she goes on a promotion overload. Sadly nowadays only good music doesn't cut it, it has to be backed up by strong promotion.

Cursing (44,144)
by Darryle from USA
| |
|
|
I bought the explicit version of the album and I'm fine with it because cursing doesn't bother me but I'm a little confused on what Mariah or iTunes considers explicit. On dedicated she says sh*t so it should be explicit but on Thirsty all she says is a** and damn. She also shss sh*t on this song. Why put an explicit sign if there aren't any curse words and why shh on this track but not dedicated. Lastly on It's A Wrap she says sh*t aswell. If she's going to say a curse word that is considered explicit she or iTunes should put an explicit sign by it. Other than these songs I am cool with the cursing. Although what made her start doing it because mostly she blocks the words or doesn't use them? Maybe she wanted to be more free in her lyrics so she started cursing.

Sam Smith (44,143)
by Shezz from Pk

So it seems like Sam Smith is the competition right now, not Coldplay. Though MC has several versions of the album, adding them all up could place her higher. JD is on twitter telling lambs to get their friends to buy it on iTunes but I think more traditional promo would help much more. Lets hope they know what theyre doing. TEOM was an extremely commercial album which helped keep it on the charts forever. MIAM is not as commercial, more of an oldschool music lover's album. Fingers crossed, lets wait until tomorrow for the first day reports. And hope for the best.
