Rarities liner notes (95,783)
by Bill from the UK
| |
|
|
I hope MC includes both the lyrics and a paragraph about each song as she did for #1 to Crapfinity. I'd love to know why these songs didn't make the cut for their corresponding albums and her thoughts behind them.

Thanks Chezz. I watched the whole interview. With her "family" it really makes me sad. I do believe it was good for her to write some things. We are her lambily, and we'll always be.

Bill is a life ruiner, he ruins people's lives. I haven't listened to any of the snippets. I want it to feel like when I was 3 and the Butterfly album came out.

Mariah's new teaser (95,778)
by Bill from the UK
| |
|
|
So MC's new teaser trailer for the release of The Rarities she's put up on Insta. She's clearly got HD versions of Emotions and Without You from TOTP. I wonder why these haven't been released yet to her YT channel? I love both performanced, especially Emotions as she was genuinely sick (not 1997 onwards sick) but took the whole song down an octave which was amazing. She did an interview with Lorraine Kelly the following day where she could barely even speak. One week what am I going to do?

VH1 / So Graham Norton (95,776)
by Andrew from the United Kingdom
| |
|
|
When I went to see Mariah on So Graham Norton (the old C4 version of his show before it soon switched to the BBC) I remember the two of them discussing that Mariah had recently been voted 2nd best voice of all time behind Freddie Mercury. I am sure it was VH1 and an in-print magazine that did a joint vote but I cannot recall. Neither can I find it on clips of the show.
Second place behind Freddie Mercury is probably a just position for Prime Mariah's voice. I could argue that she should be first but Freddie is Freddie. Listen to Love Of My Life if you dislike your heart being in one piece.
What I did find on a clip of the show, which I missed all these years, is me: at 06:42, clapping along in a dark tee, with impossibly straight curtained hair. In my defence I was 20 and it was fashionable back then. Well. Ahem. I may have been clinging on for dear life. But I still got laid a lot.

Re: Article: Mariah tells Oprah Winfrey why she wrote her memoir (95,760) (95,775)
by Andrew from the United Kingdom

Save The Day is an awful video, in my opinion - an opinion which you think I should not express. Rightio.
To quote a question you once posed: "What do this tell me about my Mariah devotion?" Well, it suggests, much like your English, it is overzealous and ill-thought-out.
You ought not to tell people to "shut up". It can often turn a bark into a bite.

Oprah interview (95,773)
by BFF from United States
| |
|
|
I honestly wasn't a fan of the interview. I thought Oprah spoke to and treated Mariah like she was a little girl. It doesn't seem like Oprah respects Mariah very much, and Mariah seems to go along with it out of deference.
I also don't like this idea, promoted in the interview, that negative things that happen to us leave us "irreparably damaged" for the rest of our lives. Mariah's experience growing up sounded absolutely awful, and it was gut wrenching to hear that story about Allison as well as Mariah's experience with those friends calling her racial slurs.
However, I've read a few reviews of the memoir, and I get the sense that Mariah and her co-writer portray Mariah as a person who doesn't have much agency, a perpetual victim. And I guess this makes sense because it is, after all, a celebrity memoir.
But Mariah will never be able to be a whole human being if she's encouraged to think of herself this way. It's definitely important to seek the help of a psychologist and/or psychiatrist if you're struggling with a psychiatric illness; but at some point, you have to move on from the past. You cannot continue to see yourself as "damaged" or you will never get beyond it. And I say this from personal experience as someone who was given the same bipolar II diagnosis as Mariah and who also spent time in a psychiatric hospital. It's interesting to me that Mariah seems to have edited out the bipolar II diagnosis she previously discussed in 2018.
I also really don't get this sudden change in her attitude towards her mother. I have difficulty accepting Mariah's contention that the incident at her mother's house in 2001 and her mother's decision to call the police were some kind of attempt to "overpower" or "control". It's very clear to me that Mariah was having some kind of manic episode and was in a really bad place. I think treating the situation as a mental health emergency was a very valid reaction from a parent. Maybe it was an "overreaction" in retrospect but what was her mother supposed to do? Ignore a cry for help and possibly risk Mariah hurting herself? I get the sense that her co-writer is behind this change.
I'm going to remain open-minded and read the memoir, but a lot of this seems like an unnecessary rehashing of things that most fans already know. Still holding out hope for a deep dive into the project "All That Glitters".

If you'll observe her body language, relieving all the traumas really shakes up her core and you can feel her nerves as she's telling Oprah about what she's been through in the past. It sucks that even until now you can see that she's fragile because of it. I just hope Mariah will reach a place where she can be at peace with her children and be secured for what she is.

I can't get enough of HWGAA. I am so excited for next week. I am climbing the walls here. And I heard a 10 second clip of Can You Hear Me and it sounds divine. Seems like it would have slotted into the Emotions album perfectly. What a week for us next week will be. What a treat Mariah is giving us with the book and the album arriving days apart. Lord this is too much, thank you thank you thank you.

How you reading the book? (95,768)

How is everyone going about reading the book? I've ordered the hardback from Amazon but I'm nervous it won't arrive on the day so I might have to purchase the paperback too. Is anyone else going to read it alongside listening to the audiobook on Audible? You can sign up for a free trial and they let you keep the book if you cancel.

I opted for the audio book too as I think it will be cool to hear Mariah read it. I'll probably get a physical copy at some point too. I'm looking forward to the stories Oprah mentioned behind the songs. The person who wrote the soundtrack to my life talking about how the songs came to be sounds damn good to me.

I'm proud of Mariah (95,766)
by Deedre aka MiTodoChop @HBF from Canada

In the interview with Oprah she was real. It was hard to be that raw. You could see it. But she didn't hide. Having come to MCA for many years, I remember many conversations where the topic of trauma came up, I remember compassion being viewed at times as too soft. The thing is trauma is not an easy subject, every person processes it differently. It isn't making an excuse for someone to recognize they've been through trauma. She gave voice to it and I'm glad. Having compassion for someone isn't about giving them a free pass, it is just about being willing to see them as a human being without judgment or anger.
She clearly still carries it with her, or some of Oprah's questions would have been easier to answer. I hope compassion is easier to give to Mariah now.

Yes. I've felt this way for years that she's doing the best she can with the hand when was dealt/unresolved issues and trauma. She so not perfect but amazing and deserving of kindness nonetheless. Music has always been her vehicle to heal, it doesn't always have to make sense to us. I am so happy that she is getting this weight off of her shoulders.

The Exoneration of Mimi (95,763)
by Randy from USA
| |
|
|
Well. I just watched the Oprah interview. I firmly believe this book will not be an exercise in vanity. And my heart goes out to MC and what she's been through. I have been hard on MC. I have criticized her mercilessly over not so much the loss of her voice but the deception used. Over the last two years I have realized that she is a human with major insecurities so when the one thing celebrated about her faded, she wanted to still be special for as long as possible. My journey in Christ has also to show people care and not criticism. Until, I saw this interview, I had no idea of her trauma. And she was close to tears for most of it. So was I. This interview humanized her in a way for me that I can no longer criticize her for anything she does. She's just trying to make it through life the best way she can. And I know with the current state of my emotions, every day that I choose life is a win. So I try not to beat myself up for my mistakes. Even though MC doesn't make music for me anymore, I will always be a fan and give her repent for getting through tough times. And getting us through tough times. God bless us all.

I was debating whether to pre-order the physical book or the audio-book, but finally went for the audio-book. As much as I love having a tangible book in my hands, I rather listen to Mariah read to me whatever she's gone through. I got my over-ear headphones ready for the experience. I'll start listening to it from September 29 to October 2. Once I'm done, I'll unwrap "The Rarities" CD, and listen to CD-1 until my neighbors' weaves, wigs, and toupees fry on their heads. If there's a knock on the door with a complain, I'll comply but I'll play GTFO to culminate the evening. The next day, I'll obliterate the tracks I don't like and add "Don't Play That Song", "Do You Know Where You're Going To", "Thank God I Found You (Make It Last Remix)", "Right to Dream", "Help Me Make It" and "Almost Home". If "Slipping Away", "Everything Fades Away" and "Do You Think of Me" are decent enough to be on the album, why leave "Do You Know Where You're Going To" out? I can't wait.

Mariah approved spoilers (95,759)
by 123 from USA
| |
|

I love how Mariah will rename a whole project of someone else leaks it before she does. But as long as she does it, it's all fair game. Still not a fan of [Here we go round again] but those vocals are insane. Is she belting at the top of her register? Show off-lol. Lullaby of Birdland sounds so dreamy and it sounds like a proper studio recording. I told y'all Cool On You was hot. It screams hit, and no surprise since everything recorded for [E=MC2] was intended to be a single. It sounds more Daydream like than [E=MC2] and could have nestled quite nicely in between Long Ago and Melt Away. Don't go to her twitter if you are still trying to wait until the release date. The album isn't even out and it's already my new obsession.
