Oh wow. Okay. Yea there was more to it. Celine had another line and Aretha had a part that was to be the clincher. Maybe it was my use of the (smartphone) emojis that threw it off somehow. But I digress. I’m glad to see everyone is moving on from that topic to more pleasant topics now. So it’s all good.

I think success of albums is increasingly viewed not by copies sold or even streams but the ticket sales the accompanying tour sells or what commercial endorsements a performer can attract off the back of a record.
It's a whole new world from what it was 10 years ago, let alone 25 years ago. In the early 90s, an album by a legacy artist could peak in the bottom rang of the Top 200 and still go Gold. Now you have albums peaking at number 1 which sell 100-300k copies total.

I was thinking recently about songs I wish Mariah had recorded in the 1990s and "Soon As I Get Home" was one of the songs I wish was on "Butterfly" or even "Daydream".
I don't like the idea of Mariah doing a Babyface covers album, too specific but maybe something like a Great American Songbook type record would be a good idea and would reconnect her with older fans - I could imagine Mariah singing "The Man That Got Away" or "Que Sera, Sera". I think she would need to go back to her 90s style of singing fluidly though, the R&B whisper build up just wouldn't work on standards such as those. She doesn't need to do fancy belts or anything, look at Diana Ross who has sung much of this material wonderfully. She could do a tour of theatres once Covid is over, TV special etc. It would be a big deal purely because it would be so unexpected from Mariah.
I hope there is a sequel to The Rarities and I am not too bothered that it wasn't a big hit, these types of records never are. There must be additional material which remains. I am intrigued by Mariah's repeated references to "the vault" and herself being surprised by what's in there. I have visions of some dungeon in a caste that she only visits once a decade for a few minutes. Someone needs to get in there and have a good clean out.
I personally am hoping that the Mariah version of the Chick rock album is released. I hope that isn't just about forgotten about, I think a song like "Prom Queen" could actually be as powerful and important a song for Mariah as "Hero" and needs to be promoted.
A duets album would be a good idea but I think Mariah would need to be imaginative in selecting duet partners, an album of her and a lot of rappers and R&B singers will basically just be a repeat of her recent albums. Imagine her doing a duet with Reba McEntire or someone from the rock genre, it would blow people's minds.
I would like Mariah to attempt an album with a completely brand new team i.e. no Jermaine. I have often wondered how different Mariah's career would have been if she had been open to recording songs by other writers - I was listening to "Unbreak My Heart" and it just screamed Mariah to me and I thought what a shame that wasn't on "Daydream" as it would have fitted in perfectly. I would love to know whether Mariah has been offered songs by writers over the years and if so, which.
Mariah is 30 years into one of the most successful recording careers in musical history - I think people have to be realistic now about what "success" at this stage in her career looks like. The chances of her having a non-Christmas related number 1 single or album, or even top 10 are very, very small. The entertainment industry is not set up to support a 50 year old plus woman having regular success like that. In the years to come, she may have a hit or even two but its unlikely but I hope she uses the years ahead to expand her horizons musically.

I do wonder when physical sales will be completely discarded and only streaming will count. They are so small for almost everybody. It makes sense; why on earth pay for something when it's free? The Rarities would only really interest fans though I think. Caution may have sold poorly, but it charted highly in the US. You can't judge a 2020 album released at the peak of streaming against, say, Music Box where buying a physical copy was the only way to hear all the songs. Don't be too disappointed Bobby A.

I know right? Got up early to nothing. Bah humbug. Although, MC did send a tweet out with the Chick album on her phone screen, indicating it has been digitised, do maybe that will come soon. She did say she was determined to find it. It's like £300 on Discogs now (previously it went for about £3).

So what is next (96,281)
by Bobby A from United States

TR sold so poorly that now I understand why the vinyl version was only made available on MC's website. So, after Christmas what is next for MC? I am afraid for her to work on a new album because it will probably sell less than Caution. I would love for to her to team up with Babyface and sing some of his biggest songs he has written for himself and others. Songs by Babyface like Just My Luck, Soon As I Get Home, Breathe Again, Exhale (Shoop Shoop), There You Go, Can I Stay With You, Always In My Heart, and Why Should I Care. They should record about 5 new collaborations where MC is the sole producer. We all know MC is a great producer.

Off topic but I heard Migrate for the first time in a club at a socially distant Mariah Night event. It sounded amazing all these years later. It's been twelve years and I got to hear one of her best bangers on a loud speaker. My friend who came with who was a non fan said she absolutely loved the song.

I'm definitely hooked. You should've brought it up two or three seasons in, so I could binge like I did with "Game of Thrones" and "Trueblood" both of which I found out 3-seasons in.

I love this show. It's kind like a period piece mixed with Sci fi with black leads. I've been busy with work so I've only gotten to episode 4. I will have to binge watch this weekend. Have any of you seen "Raised by wolves"? It's my current addiction. I watch both shows on a website online for free if anyone wants the link.

I wrote a reply and it contained this to laugh at Mariah's comments about Celine and Aretha. But I think actually I'll just invite everyone to listen to the song.
When a white woman sings it in tribute to a black woman, and when a white guy is moved to tears by it, you must surely know that the world isn't even half as bad a place as people with agenda are interested in making you believe it is.

Edward. Now you are sounding ridiculous. That's the point, Mariah wouldn't have done that. Mariah could have still squeaked about a whistle note that night. She used to compensate with tons of whistle notes in 2005 when her upper register was lacking. She let out a whistle note in 99 even after Diana told her in rehearsal "you will not be hitting that note tonight" only to have the note edited out per Diana's request when the show re-aired for reruns. You see Mariah open her mouth and nothing comes out. Whitney wouldn't have stepped up to Aretha, her Godmother and the same lady who her mother sang backup for because she knows the rules. Respect your elders if you want to be part of the soul singer circle. I remember in a late 90s Whitney interview they said you are the biggest singer since Aretha. Whitney's was like "Oooh um don't tell Aretha that." She knew to respect Aretha and she didn't want any smoke from Aretha or her mother Cissy. It's not a race thing, it's respect. Mariah thought Celine should have stood down. Celine was defending Carole because Aretha sang over Carole and Celine's parts, so she took revenge and stepped up to Aretha. Are either of them are wrong? No. It's subjective. Mariah is ok to feel the way she does. Celine is ok if she felt she wanted to defend her friend. Neither are wrong but why is Mariah being crucified for feeling like you should respect those that came before you. And to say she overhang with her male counterparts. She's the soprano. She is supposed to sing the top notes/harmony. And why can't she include this in her book if she felt it important. It's cool if you guys are disillusioned with her, I'd respect you more if you left like Randy did. But to keep coming here just to keep the tone of this board so toxic is concerning. This is not normal. We get remixes, rarities, vinyls, a book that some of you hate, and looks like she isn't done. Let the rest of us that accept who and what she is in 2020 enjoy our little Mariah hobby. God Bless and hope some of you find some happiness in your lives.

Edward, asking what would be different if "Whitney Houston replaces Celine that night", shows you have missed the plot entirely. Whitney Houston's pedigree is the Black church tradition that produced her Black Gospel singing mother, Cissy Houston. The culture gap Celine Dion fell all the way into is literally Whitney Houston's cultural home.
You speak as if Afro-American creative and social culture is mostly a product of retail pop culture and not the practice of a real group of people with a history. I wonder where you learned that. The traditions of performing Black Gospel music in the U.S are related to West African and Afro-American music, cosmologies, practices of conjuring, trance, glossolalia and other elements. Aretha carried that tradition into a time when many commercial artists seemed to have forgotten the roots of this American music. Race is not real. It is a mistake people who look like you produced. Culture is real. Clearly, Celine Dion either did not know what not to do or didn't care to proceed as if there might be something she should learn before taking the stage. I wonder why that is.

Mariah: Oh no no no dahling. You don't go toe to toe with the Queen of Soul, you revere her and only sing along to compliment her, not out do her.
Celine: I respect you, but we're going to be sanging and bringing down this house together. If I just so happen to out-sing you then.
