Re: Bfly (Classic Bossa Nova) Fm-enhanced (93,705) (93,707) by Andrew from the United Kingdom
Err, I always thought Butterfly underperformed because it was *too* slow. By the end of the second chorus you feel like you've invested a good part of your lifespan to the song. You could read the first half of War And Peace between the first chorus and the second verse. I just listened to Butterfly again and I am certain I had a grey hair at the end of it that was not there at the beginning.

Re: What if Mariah never married Tommy in 1993 (93,698) (93,706) by Andrew from the United Kingdom
You can cry about people trying to shut other people's opinions down all you like. But that is exactly what you, yourself, did. The poster posed an interesting hypothetical: just as we look back in our own lives to important junctures and wonder "what if...?" so too did the poster wonder, having correctly identified that Tommy and Mariah separating created a specific divergent path in Mariah's life, what would have happened to Mariah's career and probably Mariah herself had they worked things out. It is an interesting and fun game. Seemingly predicting Mariah would be criticised, you attempted to shut it down by ridiculing anyone who took part. And now you claim victimhood? I would have had respect for your position if you'd stuck to it with dignity. But you cannot claim to be a victim of other people shutting you down. The irony is immense and you sound ridiculous yourself.

However, I also don't think it necessary for people to keep attacking you. You're obviously not a mean person, even if sounding a bit spiteful, here. I think perhaps the lockdown is getting to everyone. (Yea, Andrew from the UK is calling you mean-spirited: your blood must be boiling right now.)

On that subject I would have thought on a lockdown people would have more time on their hands and post more here. They are not, so if more people actually do post let's try not to shut them down so it is a bit more welcoming. I understand the irony here also as I am normally first to tell people they are idiots. But even if the lockdowns are not actually getting rid of the virus or making much better in the real world, we can at least re-evaluate how we think about life and try to be a bit more positive.

If Brandon and I can be nice to each other, and I don't call him a delusional idiot in need of serious counselling, then there's hope for everyone, right?

Bfly (Classic Bossa Nova) Fm-enhanced (93,705) by Lafa from Sweden
Hey, I slowed down the tempo of Butterfly (Classic Bossa Nova), about the album tempo, and FM-enhanced it. Probably the most beautiful song ever, in my opinion.

Re: Emotions album (93,701) (93,704) by this_is_qhm from the Philippines
Sorry, Bill, but count me in with Licia on that. I'm just a different type of listener where the following factors affect how I feel about music in descending order:

Melody (always the first thing that catches my attention)
Production/instrumentation
Vocal performance
Lyrics/theme
The artist (how I feel about them and their material)

However, just like most of us, if I like an artist's work, then I am predisposed to automatically like what they put out. Not always a sure thing, though.

All of my favorite artists have one thing in common - majority of their work meet all of the items in the above criteria.

By your selection of top 3 albums, you seem to be the type of listener who likely values vocal performance first before anything else most of the time.

Re: Emotions album (93,701) (93,703) by Andrew from the United Kingdom
Will, does it not feel like most fans avoid Music Box, as you seemingly do? It is her CoBoWo of the 90s. It is the album that everyone bought because everyone wanted diva vocals at that time. It made Mariah internationally. Why do fans hate it?

I used to have the Emotions poster. I also had the Love Takes Time subway poster. I have no idea where the posters cardboard tube ended up

Re: Emotions album (93,700) (93,701) by Bill from the UK
Emotions is so underrated. My favourite after Unplugged and Merry Christmas. Her vocals are astonishing and it houses the best ballads. So moving and atmospheric, especially the closers Till the End of Time and The Wind. I've never encountered a fan who doesn't love TTEOT.

(Looks at Licia.)

Emotions album (93,700) by Lafa from Sweden
Emotions is my favorite album. It breathes class and soul. Her voice is unparallelled by any singer. Maybe Rachelle Ferrell has something similiar, but she doesn't use her voice the right way, neither even tries. But the opening track is horrible. 80's music that should be in the trash can. And she doesn't really make it vocally, sounds forced. The Daydream tour performance is a good choice though. Nothing beats this album. Does anyone know if there's a poster of the cover art to buy somewhere? A really large poster.

All I Want For Christmas Is Tokyo Dome 2020 (93,699) by Andrew from the United Kingdom
Mariah should play the Tokyo Dome again. It would be the greatest celebration of her 30 year anniversary to repeat the record she made in 1996. So, as Mariah's manager-in-waiting, I propose the following: the All I Want For Christmas Is You Tour 2020 should be at Tokyo Dome for 3 nights in December. That's 150,000 bums on seats she needs, but it's Japan - I think she could pull it off. They would drink her sweat if she bottled it. Sweat, sweat fantasy, baby.

Of course, Mariah should then fly to Europe to perform the fourth and final show at the 02 Arena in London. Because it's the best arena in the world in the best city in the world. And the best fan in the world just happens to live right by it.

Perhaps the fact that so few posts get reactions on here is because anytime a member makes a PERSONAL statement or shares a PERSONAL (webmaster, please allow for capitals to emphasize the matter) point of view, others seem to feel the need to start a polemic as to make sure all others accept their PERSONAL opinion as the absolute truth. This is a message board, a place of leisure and entertainment. It is not that important. I hoped at least of lately with the current global situation that people would be able to understand what really matters in life. All the best to you all and take care.

Re: So Blessed best vocally (93,689) (93,691) by Andrew from the United Kingdom
Agree and disagree. I can choose best vocals for different categories. But it is arbitrary and, like most lists, if you asked me to do the same thing in a few months I would come out with something completely different, perhaps. At least it's an excuse for a list.

Best soulful vocal: Anytime You Need A Friend
Best power vocal: All I've Ever Wanted
Best elastic vocal: Fantasy
Best whisper vocal: Lead The Way
Best R&B vocal: Stay The Night
Best dance vocal: Fantasy (Def Club)
Best live vocal: Hero @ Tokyo Dome
Best duet vocal: I'll Be There @ Police Athletic League (Here is Mariah Carey)

(Wait for the absolute muppets with questionable personalities to write three or four things because they "ooh just can't choose".)

Re: What if Mariah never married Tommy in 1993 (93,686) (93,690) by Tijl from Belgium
'"Butterfly" would have never come into fruition if Mariah hadn't married and divorced Tommy. In any case, a "what if" hypothesis is a tiresome and redundant exercise. As Carrie Fisher once said: "Take your pain and turn it into art."

Re: What if (93,684) (93,687) by this_is_qhm from the Philippines
Not necessarily. Mariah left her first label at the turn of the millenium, and the 2000s were a wildly different climate musically. Diva pop declined in popularity especially post 2002. 90s artists had to adapt to that shift and even that did not guarantee that they would stay afloat - most were weeded out. Mariah was lucky enough to be able to recover thanks to a perfect storm of things that worked in her favor - her drive, determination, the strength of her 2005-2008 material, her management, her narrative, her image, and her sheer talent. It was reminiscent of Madonna's triumphant Ray of Light period. Also, although Tommy was like the Weinstein of music sans the cleaning up during awards season, he slowed down in the 2000s.

Re: What if Mariah never married Tommy in 1993 (93,686) by Rashidi Rahim Rick from Malaysia
The real question is, what if Mariah never married Tommy in 1993? Imagine Mariah as a runaway bride just like her video We Belong Together. She would be more successful because more people would acknowledge her talent, instead of know her as big boss' wife. I'm sure she would win all the Grammy nominations in 1996 and she even can be in movies too (Mariah said that she received many acting offers before the divorce). Butterfly album will be her another diamond album because Tommy did not hold any grudge against her and the album consists of four #1's; Honey, Butterfly, Breakdown and My All. She can marry Derek Jeter in 1998 and also act in the secret agent movie Double O Soul and the movie would become a big blockbuster movie in 1999. She can retire from music world in 1999 after releasing her #1's compilation album in 1998. Rainbow album never exist and so other albums after that.

Re: What if (93,684) (93,685) by RibbonB from USA
No. Her drive and creativity fueled her success. If things were different she may have been forever stifled or worse, muffled and or destroyed. But I'm sure many will speculate differently, but it's all a futile exercise in "what ifs" anyway.

What if (93,684) by Joachim Agerup Løkkevik from Norway
What if Mariah never divorced Tommy Mattola an continued with similar music as on "Music Box" and "Daydream", do you think Mariah would had the same success? Yes, "Butterfly" and "Rainbow" were successful, but do you guys ever think that the success would have been greater with Tommy by Mariah's side?

Trying to understand Belgium politics is impossible. It is something most Belgians are terribly ashamed of so we decided to invent great food and beers and to live as "gourmands" to ease the pain.
