Re: So Cold (93,431) (93,435) by Andrew from the United Kingdom
I have written about it before but I have a theory that almost everybody romanticizes music of the time when they were 13-17. And I am not sure you ever really let go because it instantly transports you to that time.

Your early teens were the time when you became more mature and open to the world, when you began to identify who you are before you became an adult, when the music, movies and books you liked were harbingers of your emerging personality. It was the time of photographs of your friends on the wall; of emoting over verbose teen dramas (looking at you, Dawson); of staring out the window and dreaming of your crush, hoping they were listening to the same song and thinking of you; of hanging out at the beach all summer, going to the cinema and hanging out with your friends on hot nights under the glow of moonlight and streetlight because it was exciting, new and edgy.

Listening to music from when we were those ages reminds us of those perfect, fragile, precious moments in time we can never go back to.

I take it back. It has to be Daydream. Daydream was perfect music at a perfect moment in time. Well, for me, and I guess you, at least. But, as the adage goes, you can never go home again.

To me Rainbow represents the first time Mariah made a whole album on her own without being under the watchful eye of Sony and Tommy. Her insomnia made it a bit scattered. If she had Walter to reign it in a little like he did on Butterfly. Songs worth keeping: Heartbreaker, CTTA, Bliss, Crybaby, Petals, TGIFY. The rest could've been under the direction of Walter then we would've had a true follow up.

Re: So Cold (93,430) (93,431) by Bill from the UK
Rainbow's problem was it was a rush job to complete her contract. So the album is interludes, knock-offs, and remixes supported by one killer song (Heartbreaker). After making such bold steps forward with Butterfly, Rainbow was a massive let down. And the less said about Did I Do That, the better. Yes, Mariah. You did. And we don't know why. The album's second half has a couple of hidden gems (Crybaby, Petals), but there's very little to salvage from it. It was all over the place, rather than being a CoBoWo like Caution.

To answer your question, in terms of living in both moments, I do prefer Daydream Mariah. I mean the concert in London, where I was an attendee, was one of the best nights of my life, ever. Plus, she was at her peak of popularity. She was respected by her peers (a number of which attended the London concert with me - Sting, Phil Collins etc.), it wasn't a crime to be a fan of hers, nor an embarrassment, and she was setting trends with what she was doing musically. Plus, I don't think she ever looked more beautiful than during that era. I mean she could have passed for the FLOTUS with her fashion choices back then. Now it's either lingerie, leotards or ballgowns.

Merry Christmas Mariah does hold so much happy nostalgia for me though. I remember we had a Christmas fun day at school, where we could just play games and stuff for the last day before term ended. A bunch of kids bought in music to play, and one of my friends bought in the Merry Christmas album, which was on my Christmas list. I asked him if I could listen to it, and sat in the corner by myself all day listening to the cassette on my walkman over and over again. I couldn't believe how great it was. I think back to that cosy, well-lit, warm classroom, with the contrasting grey December light outside, reading the lyrics and looking at the pictures in the inlay. The sound of my classmates being drowned out by Mariah's beautiful voice, and then my teacher asking me if I was okay, as I wasn't joining in with the others lol.

Then I remember being devo that come Christmas day, I didn't get it haha. I got it as my "Boxing Day present", a thing my family do. I mean that was just cruel to withhold it an extra day from me lol.

Re: So Cold (93,420) (93,430) by Andrew from the United Kingdom
I think it's been said before that Daydream was a different sound altogether. It seemed there was a compromise: the almighty bellowing gave way to elasticity of range. However, the range snapped after Daydream so both the power and the elasticity were gone. Rather than the sound effortlessly floating out of Mariah's throat, she was having to push it out. It is clearly evident now as Mariah can be visibly seen to strain her bottom jaw. Evidently not a good technique. It's as if her throat is telling her to stop singing and she's adamant she's gunna.

But, as a question, do you prefer the Daydream Mariah or Merry Christmas Mariah? I do not know if I could answer it. I love them both. Now Rainbow... that's something difficult to get through without reaching for the Scotch.

"Lie about one year?" That's what I think too. It makes no sense with one year. 5 years okay, but not one. She's born on 27.03.70. That she doesn't like numbers is another thing.

I agree that the pandemic is the biggest equalizer. The disease does not discriminate. What I meant by what I said was that the severity of its effects vary from country to country - and that having too much, just enough and too little refers not only to resources but preparedness. In the US, it has brought to light the fact that so many people don't have job security and how majority of their states aren't mandated to pay their workers during emergencies like this. In many other countries, it has exposed the cracks in the accessibility of their health insurance systems. It has shown how some countries have more ideal doctor to patient ratios such as Cuba, hence their more personal approach to healthcare. It has also offered a clearer view of how some countries and governments have better policies and disaster risk reduction and management teams in place and are therefore more prepared to deal with these situations, as well as those that are actually capable of providing the basic needs of their citizens versus those that even struggle to protect their most vulnerable population. In our country, it has highlighted how many of our asymptomatic, perfectly healthy high ranking officials get VIP treatment for getting tested multiple times while civilians who are manifesting symptoms are told to self-quarantine instead because there simply aren't enough test kits to go around, and that there aren't many testing centers. It has shown how our national government cannot enforce a total lockdown by its truest definition and so has to resort to implementing a communuty quarantine instead, because it cannot afford to provide the essentials for our people to survive for two weeks, let alone sustain it for over a month; and how those who are less fortunate and have no steady income are still forced to go out of their homes to look for ways to provide food for their starving families, worried that they'll die of hunger first than the virus. Our volunteer doctors and nurses here have very minimal compensation and severely lack the necessary protective equipment to carry out their duties.

These are all negatives, but are somehow made less overwhelming by the generous, selfless deeds of many people and companies who go out of their way to help in one way of another, and it's beautiful, very encouraging and comforting to see efforts that offset the paranoia even just for a bit. A little love truly goes a long way.

I really believe MC was so right to say that she is really alto. Most altos who try to sing like a soprano end up sounding very nasal and see deterioration in their vocal capabilities. Check out gospel singer Kim Burrell or Dorinda Clark Cole for examples. Some sopranos become altos because of not singing from their diaphragm or improper breathing techniques. Maybe MC has been singing out of her range all of her career. Didn't Gladys Knight say in an interview in the late 90s that MC sings out of her range?

Flowers (93,421) by Gee from U.S.A. (New York City)
Mariah is one of few true superstars from her era. We have witnessed both her triumphs, as well as her missteps. But the beauty of it all is that she is among us and still sharing her gifts. Her music has been the soundtrack to so many lives. It is important that we continue to give her flowers before we have to speak about her in the past as we are speaking so many of our greats who have passed.

I think I'm the only one here who thinks her voice was noticeably different on Daydream, rather than Butterfly. Daydream was very nasally, and brassy in places, plus this was when she started to break up her melismatic runs into more statacco sounding ones. Merry Christmas was the last album sung in her show stopping immaculate voice. Daydream was some sort of transition, and then it went downhill from Butterfly onwards.

With Glitter she was spinning out on said mushrooms, Charmbracelet was the comedown and TEOM was when she realised she was once heading somewhere and decided to haul ass. E=MC2 was the migration to the after-party and Memoirs was when she realised she was too old for this shit and went home for a bath."

Thanks for making me laugh hard in times of the Coronavirus.

One thing thoigh, with Butterfly, just like the ones before it, she kept improving, but sadly "The Voice" as we knew it, had evidently started changing.

Re: So Cold (93,415) (93,418) by Bill from the UK
Haha. CoBoWo. That has to become a thing like Crapfinity lol. For most of my childhood Emotions was just one of her early albums before the juggernaut of Music Box, but in my old age I appreciate it more and more with each listen. I mean sure, half of it just rips off soul songs from the 70s, but her vocals are impeccable, So Blessed is divine (agree Lucia, single worthy), and whilst live renditions of Make It Happen during the 90s were brilliant, I also love the slick, laid back vibe the album version has. In fact it's my favourite song from the album. I love the story David Cole told about her being unable to get the bridge right, until, after trying all day, at 3 in the morning she grabbed the mic and belted it out in one take.

She sang it live on the London leg of the Daydream tour, of which I was an attendee. Amazing rendition, amazing night.

Re: Article: Mariah Carey celebrates milestone birthday in the studio (93,416) (93,417) by Bill from the UK
I've thought this for a long time. Mariah professes to be a Christian, and any Christian worth their salt knows that "thou shalt not lie". So, rather than unearth a huge web of deceit crafted since day one, that would then involve other questions being asked (i.e., were your vocals also a manipulation), then she just avoids it by never acknowledging her age. It's not lying exactly, but deflection from the truth. This is why I hope the memoir is her just lifting all those burdens and coming clean about every single thing. But then the other part of me is like, why lie about one year? Was it to coincide with the "Paint Your Wagon" story, that she was named after They Call The Wind Mariah. Was that an exotic stage name, and she was really called plain old Maria? Who knows. But yes, something is amiss.

Article: Mariah Carey celebrates milestone birthday in the studio (93,416) by Andrew from the United Kingdom
Apologies for the influx messages but it occurs to me:

Is the reason Mariah says "anniversary of my 12th birthday" because not to do so would be to have to say her actual age, which, if the stories about the Mottola 69/70 manipulation are true, would mean her actually lying. And as far as I know, Mariah uses smoke, mirrors, hints and deflection, but I am not certain she has ever actually lied.

Re: So Cold (93,409) (93,415) by Andrew from the United Kingdom
See, my brothers and I fell in love with Mariah because of Music Box (stemming from stealing the Proctor's Theatre VHS from the neighbours). So my eldest brother, Jonathan, went and bought the Emotions CD. We were all left a little flat. There were no stand out tracks except for TTEOT. Make It Happen was a very smooth, subdued affair compared to the live version. Emotions is a CoBoWo (Cohesive Body of Work lol) if you want to go there but is not timeless, perhaps? That being said, Emotions was a massive improvement on Mariah Carey but nothing compared to Music Box.

I would go so far as to say that every new Mariah Carey album was a massive improvement on the previous (I'm even counting Merry Christmas being better than Music Box) until Butterfly, where. instead of getting better and moving forward, she sort of side stepped onto a different path, but the same distance on the journey to excellence.

Rainbow was when she sat down in a field and took some mushrooms for a bit. With Glitter she was spinning out on said mushrooms, Charmbracelet was the comedown and TEOM was when she realised she was once heading somewhere and decided to haul ass. E=MC2 was the migration to the after-party and Memoirs was when she realised she was too old for this shit and went home for a bath.

Re: Mariah's benefit contribution (93,391) (93,414) by this_is_qhm from the Philippines
I doubt even Mariah really wants to sing Hero - she's been practically complaining about it with the same intro spiel forever, but it still is her most recognizable evergreen, and is one of the few hits she can truly sing at most 90% live. Plus it has a fitting message. Although I'd rather her do the Never Too Far and Hero medley. A little too on the nose with this period of social distancing, but at least it could make things a little more interesting.

Re: Late to the party (93,408) (93,412) by Andrew from the United Kingdom
The global pandemic has not highlighted disparity between the haves and have nots. Quite the opposite. What it has done is highlight that we are, for the most part, equal. We are equally susceptible to catch a virus, and, though not equally at risk from dying from it, we are affected equally by the collapse of our health services, the collapse of our economies and the collapse of our way of life. To make this about wealth suggests a narrow way of viewing the world. Many business owners, once well-off, now face imminent financial ruin. Everyone stood outside here at 8pm the other night to clap the workers of our (frankly excellent - and socialist) health care system which we are all staying indoors to protect. There is unity amongst the rich, the middle man, and the poor.

If one thing can be taken from this, it is that the west will quickly rethink its dealings with the rest of the world until it can sort its shit out. Which doesn't seem like any time soon.

I agree. Emotions is my second favorite album. I played that cassette so much back in the day that it got caught in my cassette player and broke. My mama wouldn't buy me another so I had to use scotch tape to put it back together (same thing happened to her first album, I killed that cassette. lol). Although TM shaded the album because it only went to #2, Emotions is perfect.

And So Blessed should have been a single. Lol.
