Wendy oh Wendy - don't look like an idiot again (86,390) by Critter from USA
"I was watching Wendy Williams a couple weeks ago, and she made a comment about how Mariah just walks into a studio and songs are made for her and she just sings them," he says. "I want to let her know: No. Mariah writes all her records. She's very involved in every step of the way. She knows her stuff."

Proceed with caution (2): people are forgetful (86,389) by Ethan from United States
Aging has caught up to me because I've left out some points.

1. Not just to shade JLo and others, but people are indeed forgetful. Mariah was nominated twice as a songwriter for the Grammy's Song of the Year for VOL and WBT (to me, she was robbed). The year after her self-titled album, she was nominated for Producer of the Year for her efforts of Emotions. Look it up (as I hope the younger generation would do since they're so consumed in social media). I don't know why some people are still talking about her as a songwriter in 2018.

2. Yes, With You is memorable because it's the formulaic, melodic song that we've grown up listening to and used to. From LTT and CLG to WBT and ISIL, it makes sense that it's easier to remember on the first listen. Of course, it will take several times to get into newer sounds and vibes of songs on Caution.

3. The Distance: It'd be great if Mariah/Tyga Dolla $ign change the word from "Silent" to "Resilient", then it'd be part of the Mariahcabulary as in "We're too strong, we're too resilient." Just a thought.

4. A No No. I was hesitant about the idea of having Cardi B on the remix (because of her erratic personality), but I guess it's a go as long as there's no dissing of Nicki Minaj on the remix. No more drama please.

5. Body of work. It's going to piss someone's name starting with A and ending with W on here but I'm going to say again Caution is about a body work. Let me remind people that Mariah and her team (except for one person, aka LA Reid) was going to release TEOM without ILT, WBT, SIO, DFAU (later re-release) because the rest of the songs are made up as a body of work. Do you think Say Somethin would hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100? No. Mine Again? No. Stay The Night? No. Get Your Number? No. Fly Like a Bird? No. A no no. It's a great record without a commercial, massive hit, but thanks to her work with JD, it generated 3-4 more songs that were released simultaneously one after the other.

6. Again, there's a disconnect with critics and some fans. Billboard, Rolling Stone, and other publications have been covering Mariah on a daily basis since the release of Caution. RS just released another article titled, "Mariah Carey Made Her Best Album of the Decade by Taking Back Control." Go read it.

7. Some fans are asking too much. Non-beat songs. Live-band songs. 90s Mariah. No features. No rappers. And so on. Mariah has been giving a bit of everything since 1990. Last year's live-band with full orchestra song was The Star. Did y'all support it? It even got nominated for the Golden Globes. FYI.

8. The Grammys. I've been boycotting the show since 2006. If Mariah indeed wins something for Caution next year, it better be televised. I do believe her that sometimes the media has soiled, especially the Grammys. I wrote a long post about it a few years ago if people want to read it.

9. Interestingly, the album was originally named Portrait (according to Mariah). I'd support that as well. But overall, we all know the 90s Mariah is gone and she's adapting to what she's got left now.

10. To quote Todd's words, let's get a Coke or Sprite, whichever you prefer but don't yuck my yum (exclamation mark). Cue AIWFCIY. Happy holidays y'all.

Giving Me Life (still) (86,388) by Will from Australia
Can't move on from this song. Just obsessed with it and have it on repeat driving everyone crazy. It has that vibe that The Roof has but I was totally not ready for The Roof when I first heard it as it so so departed from that other Mariah pre-Buttefly and it took a while for me to appreciate it. But GML is at a moment in her career where i'm totally ready for that Roof 2.0.

Funny how we accept when our artist develops into something we might not have been ready for back in the 90s to something we now long for. GML is one of her best songs ever. I played it from the start of the outro with the electric guitar as if it were an intro to the song (songs on repeat) and it really changes the tone. Try it.

Dear Eric. I have risen to power (run Brandon, run) and Australia is hereby wiped from the internet. We shall miss the colony. A.

No, I just assumed they did since they are credited together as a team. Not a fan. Please, stop projecting your insecurities onto me.

Re: Body of work (86,371) (86,385) by Todd from Melbourne, Australia
I'm really surprised you don't enjoy "Giving Me Life". Naff title aside, it's the only song from the entire body of work I've listened to more than once.

Re: The other 6 songs (86,285) (86,384) by MusicfanJ from Germany
The same here. The song "Caution" gets better and better by each listen. I like the complete album except "GTFO". It seems a fan favorite from the beginning but somehow I'm not feeling this one at the moment.

Re: The promo tour (WWHL, Fallon, GMA) (86,362) (86,383) by Morgan from United States
I'm gonna assume the songwriting is being spoken about since Wendell Williams implied she just tacks her name on already written songs. But the interviews have been coherent, mature and without embarrassment.

I also have no issue with most of the performances. She seems to have found her lane and knows how to make the best of it.

I noticed the same here in Germany. I remember a time when they had many copies of her new album on the release date.

Re: A lengthy meditation on the album (86,306) (86,381) by MusicfanJ from Germany
"Why should we demand natural vocals when we accept synthetic music made entirely on computers?"

That's why I dream of an album with real instruments or even orchestral (no beats) and Mariah. The songs she did on Merry Christmas II are with the band are great. But of course this is nothing for most of the young listeners.

Re: God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen (86,375) (86,380) by MusicfanJ from Germany
How I love that song. When I first heard it, I got goosebumbs. It's like an angel is singing. The voice, so much power, the emotion is everything.

Re: God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen (86,375) (86,379) by sally from united states
I so agree with that, whenever I'm listening to GRYMG I'm amazed at the arrangement and performance of the background vocals, it's one of those songs that just solidifies her musical brilliance.

Merry Christmas (86,378) by enwar00 from usa
I'm working from home today, it's cold and drab outside, so this may be the day I pull out the Christmas albums and give them their first spins of the season. I thought to start with MCIIU, because that's usually my go to, but maybe I'll go with the original first today.

"To question when Mariah let the glitter overpower the artist is perfectly fair. To say it's people merely living in the nineties who don't know who Mariah is, who should move on, is ad absurdum."

I completely agree with it. I found the original post from Chris1992 very interesting and not negative at all. It was heartfelt and I feel the same way on many things Chris1992 pointed out. Caution is a modern album and I do enjoy it. But it's true, the lyrics are very childish and superficial. Yes you can call it fun lyrics, but she used to write songs that were pure poetic. I mean "Heartbreaker" were fun too but on that album were "Petals", "CTTA", "AOO", "TGIFY" so there was a nice balance between ballads and "fun" tracks.

Re: A No No remix (86,360) (86,376) by Mimi L. from Empower Your Highlighter
Haha I'm so excited. This would be Mariah's first high profile collaboration in a pretty long time. I heard Cardi's team is also aware of it and apparently Cardi saw the video of Mariah talking about it on someone's iinstagram story. In other news both Mariah and Cardi were spotted at a studio today, so fingers crossed. I think this remix has already been recorded or at least already been signed off on by all parties because Mariah wouldn't just put it out there. She usually says names of people she would maybe like to collaborate with, but she has never been this specific about the collaborator and the song.

God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen (86,375) by MC1989 from Spain
I think this is the definitive version of the song. As much as I love Nat King Cole's version and Annie Lennox's (and her whole album "A Christmas Cornucopia"), Mariah's recording captures the angelic 1994 tone and some of her best vocals, and her ability for creating an unique sound. I played it yesterday to my father - who, back in the 90's used to critized some of Mariah's vocal acrobatics for not being able to transmite enough - and he asked me: "Is she doing all the background vocals? I admit she's a genius at harmonizing and creating melodies." I almost cried lol. As Andrew said the other day, O Holy Night is the definitive version of the song. To me, GRYMG is also the definitive cover. I wished she had done more songs in this style, not only for a Christmas song.

I said the same thing Randy. She's killing these interviews. There hasn't been one yet that's made me cringe or put me in a space to where I couldn't finish watching. She's been focused, funny and knowledgeable.

Here we go again. MC and Afanasieff were "a modern day Lennon and McCartney"? You really just spout anything that will help you build your fantasy world. Lennon and McCartney did not write songs together. They wrote separately. "Lennon and McCartney" was merely how both men accredited any song they individually composed during the Beatles reign.

Re: The promo tour (WWHL, Fallon, GMA) (86,362) (86,372) by Lexingz from Estonia
Yeah I agree, irregardless, she has been talking about writing her own songs since the beginning and only now seems to be recognized for it. If you asked someone who is not a fan, just knows of her existence, I am sure they would not now. I love that she at one point said that if she would be one of those artists who played an instrument, everybody would instantly believe she writes her own material.

Body of work (86,371) by Andrew from UK
I swear if I have to read that Caution is a "solid body of work" one more time I will rise to power and wipe the internet. It is, seemingly, a way of redefining an album that has no standout hits or an album where all the songs seem to melt into one. I maintain that six out of the ten are quite uninspired and forgetful. GTFO is different and cool, With You is beautiful and memorable. A No No is fun. Portrait is the introspective one that every lamb will cherish. The rest are blah. I do not love Caution, but not do I hate it. It simply exists. "Body of work"? I will wipe the internet.

Re: A lengthy meditation on the album (86,349) (86,370) by Andrew from UK
Did Mariah really want to move away from the Diva Balladeer after 97? She did a mediocre job of doing so were she really have desired as such. She not only wrote many ballads after that year she still insists on singing said ballads, draped in a sparkly gown, on stage night after night ("Ima be here night after night to feel your lovin arms around me baby baby baby, you make it alright" - no relevance I just hear it everytime someone says "night after night" lol). I do sometimes think the lambily willingly uses strawman arguments in order to deflect critical analysis. Most people, I would postulate, buy into Mariah's journey that she emerged from the crissalis after the divorce and that everything pre 97 was fake in some way. Yet, before Mariah took her clothes off she acted like a normal person. Everything became a little different after the divorce and now, especially at times over the last decade, she does not. Everything now is measured, images airbrushed, utterances tempered, smiles faked and so on. Occasionally Mariah is forced to let this contrived image go and you see the real her. This happened at the NYE debacle. When I saw her look to the sky and realise that it had failed I saw a woman grounded and without pretence. So with regards to well-tempered people like Special K, et al., I understand the sentiment that Mariah was creatively restricted pre-97. But to say that Mariah of recent years is a relatable person without contrivance and fictitious persona is disingenuous at best and, at worst, ignorant. Even Martyn said she had a "personality transplant", something with which I agreed and have, thus, reiterated (probably regurgitated, admittedly) since. To question when Mariah let the glitter overpower the artist is perfectly fair. To say it's people merely living in the nineties who don't know who Mariah is, who should move on, is ad absurdum. And these arguments are only ever posted here by people who love her, but love her in different ways to others, who do not see "negativity" but "honesty". I do submit, however, that Mariah's interviews have been relaxed and without much of the contrivance or plain faced boring bullshit of recent years and they're a buzz to watch. And the audience footage of With You was equally so. I just wish half of the album wasn't dull as dishwater. But, hey - this is my truth, tell me yours.

Re: A lengthy meditation on the album (86,335) (86,367) by Tevin from USA
Dang Special K. Great points, I totally agree. I keep forgetting the general public thought Mariah was a white girl with a big voice, when she first broke into the industry. I think I remember that scene in Glitter where the director was talking about the "mystery " of her race. Also everyone can remember the Fresh Prince of Bel Air line, "He's the one that found out Mariah Cary was black."

My suggestion for those stuck in the past is to get some surround sound, a 3d video 4k ultra HD projector, some 3d glasses, then watch all the pre 97 performances to your blue in the face. That's the closest thing to a time machine you're going to get.
