Re: Why 8th Grade? Butterfly marries TEOM (86,615) (86,631)

I couldn't agree more. It's her best album since TEOM. I'm listening to "Caution" everyday and it's really among my favourites, with Daydream, Butterfly, Mariah Carey and TEOM.

Merry Christmas (86,630)
by Bobby A from United States

I think as a vocalist, MC was at her finest on Merry Christmas. When I listen to the Merry Christmas album on vinyl, I can hear her lovely tone and fullness of her voice so clearly. Also, the dual disc CD version of the album brings out the same clarity in CD form. AIWFC just may make Hot 100 top 5 this year. Radio is playing it like crazy this year.

Yes I'm loving her chats. Did you catch the tea she spilled about brand A Kmart? That she is the one who tried to buy the rights to her music for $5000? She fantasy the name, but in the whole context, caught that. So glad Mimi had the intuition, forethought etc, not to do that. Maybe that's the Re A reason Brand A has lingering resentment, she didn't get a cut.

The song usually explodes on 24th and 25th. After the 25th, the song completely drops on all these charts. This year, Christmas the 25th is on a Tuesday. Sales and streaming starts on a Friday and ends on a Thursday, while airplay is Monday to Sunday. This means the song only has a chance for number 1 before the 24th and 25th. It's possible, but difficult. Next year it has an even stronger chance, which is appropriate since the song turns 25 next year. If we want it to go number on this year, we need to stream if big time. But I would like the song to top this year, that could help A No No remix.

Cohesive vs. disjointed (86,625)
by Matty from Vancouver Canada
| |
|
|
I believe "Butterfl" and "Caution" are Mariah's most cohesive albums start to finish. The track to track flow of both albums is masterful.
"Rainbow" and "MIAM" are completely disjointed. I can count the number of times I've listened to Rainbow start to finish on one hand nearly two decades after its release (although I like all the songs individually). I love every single MIAM track individually (except for the oddly unnecessary "America The Beautiful" bonus), but now listening to it front to back in order, after listening to "Caution", it's very jarring sequencing. I've always had MIAM sequenced differently on my personal playlist since it came out.
The cohesion of "Caution" juxtaposed to the disjointed nature of MIAM truly exemplifies how Mariah's got a renewed love and connection with her art.
"Let the queen make music for her most loyal of fans, but more importantly, for herself." - Lauren Alvarez, Forbes. This statement is as true for "Butterfly" as it is for "Caution".

Ahh this all makes so much more sense. Now listening to "8th Grade", relating it to Mariah being an outsider at elementary school, being young and exposed to very adult elements and situations in life etc. "8th Grade" is a song title that makes sense. She should have kept the full title "8th Grade, Rough" to give some insight to the lyrical references, however what she said in the Pitchfolk interview, and what she explained in the Genius interview give clarity. These recent interviews have been amazing. I've gotten so used to Mariah giving vague, pussy-footing, non-answers in interviews when asked specific and direct questions about her music, that it's a breath of fresh air to hear her once again explain her art and it's conception in detail the way she did a decade ago. Ok, now that I've gotten my answer, I don't have a single gripe about "Caution" at all. Well, other then I wish "Caution" had two more songs because only 40 minutes of new Mariah is simple not enough sugar for my ears.

I like the title too. I love everything which is nostalgic. And the 8th grade was tough for me too. I guess for most 14-15 year old ones it still is.

Good for Mariah calling out the nonsense about the rude and or ignorant comments about her race, related to the Kaepernick post she made on IG. That crap is so tired.

The Forever Mariah Pitchfork interview has more about her 8th Grade title. She describes her mood writing it reminded her of that vulnerable time in 8th Grade when she also felt vulnerable and insecure.

Re: 8th Grade should be Limitless (86,617)
by RibbonB from USA

I asked that question as soon as I heard the song. Limitless is the perfect title IMO. Mariah's explanation is odd, that the feeling expressed is melancholy, which reminds her of the 8th grade. The working title was supposedly 8th Grade Rough. That's double speak to avoid saying what it's really about. I have my opinions, but won't ruin it for some.

She said on Genius it was suppose to be "8th Grade Rough" and they dropped the "Rough". 8th grade was rough times for her and anyone who can relate. I like the title.

Why 8th Grade? Butterfly marries TEOM (86,615)
by Matty from Vancouver Canada
| |
|

Question. Why do we think Mariah called the song "8th Grade"? From the amazing music, to vibrant and fresh packaging of the album, to the fantastic promo the era... literally my only gripe with "Caution" is this song title. I love the song. Always on repeat, and love that it's produced by Timba. By why not call it "You're not my world", or something related to the lyrical content or song message. Any insights or thoughts?
"Caution" is brilliant and feels like the album Mariah's always wanted to make. It's feels like the marriage of Butterfly and TEOM.

Still not a fan of the song, I still believe it's her worst lead single despite it being a hit, and the Eminem-mocking video is equal parts brilliance and disastrous pettiness, but this is still a cause for celebration.

A No No x No Scrubs (melody) (86,608)
by bliss! from Brazil

Has anyone noticed how there's a part of "A No No"s melody that is very similar to the chorus of "No Scrubs" by TLC?
"No, I don't want your number" is "No, you ain't gonna lie to my face no' mo". If you try to sing TLC's lyrics to the melody of "A No No" you might get what I mean. Or am I just tripping?

Article: Mariah Carey dismisses her haters on Caution (86,607)

Agree. Giving Me Life is the second best track for me in this album next to Caution. It highlights the bedroom lower vocal range of Mariah and I am loving it. I hope these two tracks will be released commercially with a video together with Stay Long Love You. These three are on repeat on my playlist for almost two weeks now. A No No follows.
