Mariah saying she wants that collaboration made My day. I've been wanting this since the moment I heard that song. I hope they pull through with it because it would be huge.

I wasn't feeling Caution and OMG much till yesterday. Caution clicked first and then OMG. I wish they had only released one song and not 4 because now I only wanna hear the other 6 and that feels too short.

Amen to that. It's on a perpetual loop here. I just wonder if she'll actually do it. Big productions haven't been a thing for her since about TMB.

She did though? The performance was clearly live, save for a few lipped lines at the end. What she did was piece together two performances together, which is unnecessary tbh, she sounded great in the audience video.

This song called 8th Grade is killing me with every listen. MC and Timbaland creative a song that so darn good. And Portrait evokes MC and Big Jim at the piano.

Lmao I didn't even notice it was dubbed. I liked the performance though. But true lambilies know the reason for that ginormous microphone. To hide her miming. Which I thought was unnecessary because she's actually gotten better at lip syncing. Not completely believable but still would fool a regular non-lambily. Maybe GMA's studio crisp lighting and camera really capture every fake movement of the mouth. Mariah's face is also much more "in your face", with the way it was filmed. Nonetheless, great job utilizing vocal tracks that didn't make the album version of the song. At least she's being creative with those. It's not completely foiled and wasted. Hide-rophone should've been removed though. Hiding your mouth only gives more miming speculation. Doesn't really keep you safe.

Caution track review (lenghy, bring a splash) (86,278)
by Will from Australia
| |
|

GTFO Solid song, catchy and different to what you would expect from a MC track. Production is on point and probably the most current sounding song on the album. Vocals are weak though at times and sound strained. It'd be interesting to know when this was recorded as her vocals lately sound much stronger than what was laid down here. Video is one of the better vanity videos we've gotten from her.
With You Somewhat boring and an attempt to have a big belting ballad on the albumin but without the punch of any of her previous works. The repetitive beat and lyrics are too basic in their composition. Disappointing that this is the one big ballad that made the cut.
Caution Refreshing pace and throwback to the sound of Aaliyah. Definitely a grower, didn't care much for the climax repeating of Caution over and over, less is more.
A No No Can't get enough of this bop. Lyrics are on point and the song is full of so much diversity that some of the previous tracks lacked. Interestingly I don't find the repeats of no no annoying on this one. Probably the most catchy song on the album and should get the single treatment.
The Distance A cool jam, just flows well and the beat is everything when it kicks in. Vocally the climax is a real highlight of what Mariah can still do, especially when she sang it live on Fallon, sounded better than the recording when she hit the belts. Had trouble understanding what she was singing (for laughs and for life I thought was flies flies lol) Another song worth a single offering.
Giving Me Life Where do I start. Epic. One of the best produced songs she's ever recorded and a real highlight not just on the album but in her career. On first listen I was already digging the roof vibes from it, but my god, when that outro kicked in, gagged. Just love the song so much, especially as the first part is so happy and love sick but then the outro has something haunting and menacing to it. Get some BOTH and TBO vibes from it too. Take a bow MC, giving me life.
One Mo'Gen Sounds like it was a filler from TEOM that never made the cut. Not digging it and maybe that's because I'm coming off the high of the last track. Not sure if MC's voice on this one, sounds different but not in a way I'm down with. The song is nice and easy to listen to but I find it boring.
8th Grade Another favourite and just the type of song you can drift away daydreaming to. Beat is very similar to some other songs on the album. Vocally it sounds like it came from an earlier album as it's very strong compared to something like GTFO. While the outro on GML takes that to another level, the outro on this does the complete opposite for me. Just doesn't fit and leaves me asking wtf was that. Kinda sours the song.
Stay Long Love You How you want it how you want how you want it... on the cutting floor. Only song I think is a pure filler on the album. Just sounds a mess to me.
Portrait If I'm honest I reckon this just doesn't suit the tone of the album but I get why it's there but I feel like it's very formulated to fit the 'Outside', 'Looking In' and 'Petals' criteria which for me makes it sound more forced. I do like it until the bridge which sounds too different to the rest of the song.
Overall I really really like the album, probably a 7.5 out of 10 for me (LTL circa 1991). Probably would've liked some wow ballads like when I first listened to WYC or WBT. Runway should've bumped SLLY from the list. Glad lots of fans are loving the album and for so many different tings which is a positive sign for someone like MC with such a large fan base.

What is next after this promo week for Caution? I was hoping for a second single annoucement this week. I just hope the Caution momentum doesn't stop. Too bad we don't have a Touch My Body right now to drive album sales and radio spins. Maybe a plan will surface we dont know about yet.

I enjoy when we differ on what tracks we like or don't like. I might motivate someone else to go back and take another listen to a song that I love. That sure happens for me alot. A No No and Runway seems to be favorites and I'm not feeling them, but because so many people like the songs I'm willing to listen One Mo Gen ( I'm corny lol) to them.

Mariah thinks she's slick making the songs that keep on giving. I'm now convinced that she has a secret scientific formula that makes you love her songs more and more the more you listen to them. Now Caution and Giving Me Life is starting to creep up as my favorites on the album, One Mo Gen is still putting up a strong fight, it may end up being a three way tie in the end. That darn Mimi she strikes again. I'm gonna nickname this album "Unskippable" because every track is fire. The whole album has been on shuffle since Friday and I'm only loving each song more than the first listen. Caution is giving me life.

Caution: lengthy review ahead (86,269)
by this_is_qhm from the Philippines

The album title was really meant as a warning - anyone who has been accustomed to the easily digested, poppier indelible hooks that frequented Mariah's previous albums should brace themselves for a barrage of slow-burn refrains and choruses that need repeated listens to sink in and even more to fully appreciate.
It may have received mixed to positive responses from fans mostly due to the overall vocal restraint and lack of standout songs, but there are a few good reasons why this is Mariah's most critically acclaimed album in a long time.
1. Cohesion. Props to her for coming up with her most unified set since Butterfly in spite of having a different producer for every track. Her signature sound and artistry shines through 80s p9 she keeps a gaggle of producers that have their own distinct styles in line. Mariah is the throughline that keeps everything together. Her stamp on each style is definitely there.
2. Willingness to experiment. Mariah is a known creature of habit. Any initiative from her to look outside her usual trusted team of producers (a.k.a. comfort zone) is a cause for celebration, and in this case, they have paid off well.
3. On-trend without sounding desperate. Thirsty sounded like an attempt to capitalize on the burgeoning trap trend in 2014, which would have totally fine if it weren't nestled in an R&B album that consisted of mostly traditional sounds. Caution in its entirety, on the other hand, is a mostly modern, current R&B peppered with a few throwback elements here and there to keep it grounded and relatable.
4. It's the first album since E=MC2 that pushes Mariah's sound forward. MIAMTEC was criticized for bringing almost nothing new to the table, which is a bit unfair as it was meant as more of a retrospective album in the first place, with Mariah trying all sorts of R&B sounds - most of them she has already done in the past. Caution, while not exactly groundbreaking, is as forward-thinking as we can get from Mariah.
5. It doesn't overstay its welcome. At 41 minutes (Runway included), it's her shortest release, but one of her sweetest as well.
On to the songs:
GTFO - a unusual but weirdly effective opener. The one line chorus never loses its bite.
With You - works much better within the album than on its own. This is the most familiar (i.e. safest) track on the album in terms of sound and production.
Caution - sounds like something Aaliyah would have done on her self-titled album. It's not as dark or sinister as its title may suggest, so it plays more like an instruction manual than a warning. This may be a choice for a future single, though.
A No No - Proves that one of the coolest things about Mariah is that she could write like a poet, a great narrator, or a rapper. A No No is definitely a great example of the latter, and it's all the better for it.
The Distance - That elastic beat is undeniable. If they're pushing this as the second single, they better bring it in the video. Please up the production value.
Giving Me Life - The cringeworthy internet slang that this song is based upon is enough to make everything about this a disaster. On paper, this was supposed to go wrong. But thanks to a simple chorus that relies on Mariah's lower register and that's possibly the most memorable one on the album, Mariah and Dev succeed at creating an eerie atmospheric masterpiece that will be revered by fans for years to come. The "it wasn't really" part is the definition of a subtle hook that sneaks up on you.
One Mo' Gen - This is the most deliberately retro-sounding song on the album. It's nowhere near (like light years away from) the brilliance of Make It Look Good, but it features Caution's most complicated hook with its meandering melody. The harmonies are great, though. Mariah almost sounds like Brandy circa 2012 on the verses and pre-choruses.
8th Grade - So this thematically is Mariah's own version of Taylor Swift's Fifteen. It's very warm and cozy feeling, which only further solidifies Mariah's mastery of making sad songs sound inviting and nothing like their lyrical content. This is the true "pity party of the year".
Stay Long Love You - Still can't get over its similarities with I'll Be Lovin' U Long Time. Same running time. Same sentiment. Similar song titles. But this one turns up the sex a bit more. That sexy breakdown of harmonies before the last chorus is just about the most heavenly thing you'll hear on the album next to the reverb on With You, but it's simply too short.
Portrait - This is what Close My Eyes, Looking In, Petals and Languishing would sound when put through a blender. It's the closest to old-school Mariah we can get. It has a very mature, classic melody and feel to it.
Runway - Mariah's been in the game for too long that she now samples herself, guys. Juxtaposing a sped-up sample of her memorable vocal run on Butterfly with her current belting only highlights what she has lost, and this song is like the cousin of the 2008 collaboration Just Stand Up. It's also the most generic-sounding track off this era, which is probably why it was tacked on as a bonus as it also doesn't fit well with the rest.
This is the best we could get from Mariah vocally in 2018. Her leathery tone has now adopted this more earthy feel, and whatever roundness left in her vocal has now become completely angular. That's her voice these days - edgy, razor-sharp and thinner especially in the higher register, while darker, raspier and heavier on the lower end. What has once flowed out effortlessly now has to be forced out most of the time. The belts have become less pleasant to the ear and have been pushed to the background. The collaborations with producers, while random, yield organic results. After over a decade spent on trying to recapture the magic of TEOM, Mariah has finally decided to give up, throw caution (*wink*) to the wind and just make the music she has always wanted to make. Nothing on this album is as instantly gratifying as the usual Mariah fare, and they're not intended to. The melodies are slighter and the beats and grooves are just as important as the lyrical content. Mariah has finally made a great late night album, and Caution is, in today's slang, "a mood" and "a vibe", I guess both literally and figuratively.

I actually really like Caution from beginning to end. Standouts to me would be Caution, Giving Me Life and 8th Grade. Oh, and The Distance. I don't care much for A No No other than the Lil Kim sample, but if they make it a single, I suppose I'll support it lol. Don't know if the album will be a commercial success, but it's the first Mariah album I've enjoyed from beginning to end since E=MC2. Oh, and I was at a wedding this past weekend and the dj actually played Last Night A DJ Saved My Life.
