Distance - my theory (for laughs) (85,111)
by Mirage_Nunez from America
| |
|
|
So first let me say I think The Distance is the definition of a stone groove (smash hit wonder). I can see a video in blue tint (much like her album cover) with gentle winds blowing thin white curtains on each side of a big open window, but I digress. The song gives me Teddy Riley, Keith Sweat 80s jam vibes, but with a very modern twist. Not saying it should be the next single single, but I can so hear it all over radio. I'm excited to see what else Mariah has in stored with this new album, era, and I'm loving the new energy Mariah is serving this year (positive, professional, polished). So for my theory: piggy backing off the person that said they believe Mariah is telling a story with how she released the songs. Okay so follow me: you all remember that period when it seemed like Mariah and Nick were secretly back together, spending a lot family time together, appearances etc. and Brian Tanaka was out of the picture. Then all of a sudden Nick was gone again and Brian was back. Well my theory is GTFO is the story of her and Nick breaking it off for good, With You is her declaring the love between her and Brian as the real deal, and The Distance basking in the strength of their union. Disclaimer: I'm not coming for Nick or making him out to be the "bad guy", I love and support Roc and Roe's daddy too. I just found the theory of her telling a story with her songs intriguing when paralleling it to actual observations.

I'm glad you brought up the topic. Her vocals from Taipei last night were great. The humidity does have a lot to do with it and I surmise the time change has even more effect. Mariah has always liked singing in the wee hours.

With You > TD > GTFO (85,107)
by Edward from USA

I'm impressed how everything is falling into place with this era. Everything is on point so far. I didn't love "The Distance" from first listen, but it has grown on me. It's definitely radio friendly, current and catchy, so let's see what happens. I still can't get "With You" out of my head. I haven't had that experience with a Mariah song in years. I'm just worried that with so many shots of Remy, I have become an alcoholic, I can't help it, Mariah is a bad influence. It's brilliant she's releasing a new album so closed to the holidays so it could actually run on the Christmas buzz she always generates, it's genius. I would take a great 10-track album over an album ruined by some rotten apples any day. Back to listen to "With You".

Second single (85,106)
by B from USA
| |
|
|
I think the second single will be the song that charts the highest on the Hot 100 the week the album is released instead of preselecting a single and having it derail the album's momentum. Why IDJ chose Bye, Bye when Migrate debuted on the Hot 100 on digital downloads/sales alone is beyond me.

His album was delayed indefinitely after the lead single underperformed. So glad we don't have to deal with delays this era. Delays killed the last two eras and poor single choices.

Mariah could easily jump on a Bruno or Weeknd song and score another #1. I think this era is about redeeming herself after the abysmal sales of MIAM. She seems like she has something to prove to LA Reid and everyone else who called her a legacy act.

Busta song (85,103)

The song with Busta is actually his song and M was just a feature so really it's up to him and his team to figure out what will become of it. But it would be cool to hear the completed version.

Dance to "The Distance" (85,101)
by Edouard from France
| |
|
|
I can't remember the last time Mariah released a song that actually was danceable, that one can really dance to. "It's like that" (Scott Storch Remix)? Well that's the last time I danced to a Mariah song in a club. Wait. No they played Heartbreaker (Jay-Z version) in a club in Paris two years ago. Everybody was into it. Lemme tell you. P.S: I love how current yet current the song is. Because it takes a grown woman/man to talk about "goin' the distance" in a relationship in this day and age.

The Distance makes the difference (85,100)
by Edouard from France
| |
|
|
Mainly with the rest of other pop songs. This song is everything: - starts with a chant (very catchy) - buttery yet powerful acapela moment - verse verse fast paced and touching in its delivery - great bit drop - great chorus, easy to sing along, simple, yet sophisticated enough to be your typical Mariah club banger - great second verse, rap and "sing-songy" - cool featuring, present yet not overshadowing Mariah's ownership of the overall track - great belts and harmonies in the last chorus and adlibs - leaves you with a feeling of wanting more à la "It's like that" Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.

The Distance acapela moment (85,099)
by Edouard from France
| |
|

I love how the song starts with an acapela moment and how Mariah manages to make it sound fresh and intriguing enough for everybody to way for the chorus. And then bam chorus. And you're hooked because it's purely irresistible. Simple still sophisticated.

That Mariah's concert in Asia are being filmed? They have big screens which hasn't been the case in a Mariah concert for ages. I believe they're filming it as a promotional tool. DVD on the way of her WW concerts?

I love it. To me it's her best single since #Beautiful, which to me was her best single since It's Like That. I here [sic] so many things in The Distance: a bit of Faded (production), a bit of Dedicated (vocals and "ladidadidadida"), a bit of HATEU (emix "the acapella intro"), a bit of The Roof (the theme and atmospheric ambiance), a bit of Fantasy (the high energy chorus and harmonies).

Hi. You know what? I thought the same thing. "We're goin' the distance" can mean several things. - Obviously, in reference to Brian Tanaka and her. - Her and ss (her Lambs). - Her and her inner self (like so what I'm 48 and I'm still fresher than the rest because "them chickens is ash and I'm lotion").

Can we talk about... (85,094)
by Edouard from France

Mariah's vocals in Asia. I mean, wow. She's the greatest singer. She's in high spirit and also she's probably well rested. Plus, the humidity in Asia can only help with range. Mariah's voice is very sensitive. She's always said that. She's never been like "I can do whatever I want to with it". She's always said (even in early interviews) that basically she's not in charge, that her voice has a life of its own. So to speak. I find it fascinating. It truly is a gift from God.

The Distance is growing on me (85,092)
by Sheila from United States

At first I thought ok she's trying to be current, understated and give just a little bit of vocals. Just a bit. GTFO is the song she should have given the royal release treatment, The Distance is cool, this era she looks great, fashion on point but vocally we are not getting from Mariah what is needed. Vocals. Cheers to this new era and hoping for a great record.

Completely agree that MC should really capitalise on her tours this quarter to promote her new material as well as delivering her hits. Some audience members may be attending "for the nostalgia", so for them to hear her new, great material as the album hits the shelves seems a bit of a no brainer.

The Distance (85,090)
by Stacey from USA

So the first 55 seconds, I'm like what is this mess. The whole spirit chant is so unnecessary and out of place. After that, the beat kicks in and the song sounds nice. Even Ty Dolla, whatever his name is, his part flows nicely with the song. So I guess I'll skip the first minute of the song, lol.

The Asia tour and MC15 Caution era (85,088)
by Ethan from United States
| |

I'm happy that the setlist is similar to the Butterfly Returns residency. However, here are my two cents. 1) Cut Emotions, VOL, and OSW and 2) replace them with LTT (a whole song), IBT, WY, and Without You. The Asian audience prefers ballads/pop songs. Yes I know that VOL is the magna carta of melisma but I don't think it's as popular as IDWC or LTT from her first album in Asia. It'd make sense to include Without You as an encore with Hero since it's her biggest international hit in Asia. And include WY as a must as part of promoting new album and music. Please wear a short dress when singing uptempo numbers to move around easier. I remember seeing her in a blue Asian-inspired short dress singing to Honey as part of the Charmbracelet tour and it was a cute and flirty performance.
Now to the new era: management/PR is on point. We need to take a chill pill and let the professionals do their job. They are in this business for a reason. The music industry is so different now compared to the 90s in terms of promotion and sales. Thus, WY goes to AC and GTFO/The Distance goes to Urban/R&B radio stations for an array of audience. Based on Mariah's album track lists, the #2 and #3 songs are often the most popular/strongest singles and WY was placed at #2 so I wonder how the rest of the songs played out. I really hope there's a deluxe version with a few more songs or some hidden songs. I think she hopes to go on tour in the US with this album (if it's a success) so that's why her residency is only scheduled in February of 2019. In today's music world, sales of at least 1 million is a success. A series of albums released by female artists (Britney, Christina, Fergie, etc.) had very poor sales in the past years. In my opinion, Mariah needs to have more confidence and work on her performance.
