What you're left with when it's all over (81,634)
by Andrew from UK

Everything Fades Away has an reassuring acceptance of an ending of something about it (of a relationship, an album) - an ending tinged with sadness, as most endings often are, but, here, peaceful with and of the outcome. Without any abruptness, the last few bars drift off into the ether leaving the listener feeling quite calm and lazily contemplative. It is a masterstroke of a denouement. Looking In has a haunting air of lonely trespass about it. It feels somewhat like a secret note left by Mariah in a cold uncomforting house in the middle of the night (whilst someone sleeps unawares) for someone to discover and send her rescue. It is both beautiful and heartbreaking together at once. But I always felt it a puzzling way to tie up the infectious mood of the Daydream album. And whilst Outside is of course a fan favourite I cant help but wonder why? I even question myself on my reasons for having loved it as I did, and perhaps still do. Now, I may be going against the sacred texts as found in the Lamb Bible here hah but it doesn't tell you to "Keep Calm and Carry On", it certainly does not tell you "It Gets Better" and it definitely does not tell you you're some kinda Hero. In fact, it does the bloody opposite. It simply tells you like it is: that you would probably be liked more if you did not sit at home crying about how sad your life is to sad Mariah Carey songs all day. As the years pass by, I would rather endings filled with the collective positivity with friends and the happy abandonment of troubles as in the Through The Rain Remix than the terminal loneliness and hopelessness of Outside. Funny how one can learn, eh.

Andrew this is so weird. I was thinking earlier today about posting this very same topic. I agree, Everything Fades Away is of course the best ending she's ever done. Really the US version was the only one to not have it feature, as all International versions of the album included it, and it seems so incomplete ending Music Box with All I Ever Wanted. I remember when Rainbow was out she said it was her first "happy ending" to an album, so perhaps she viewed EFA as the final track as well. She's never bettered that. So atmospheric and moving and sung with such conviction.

The greatest album closing track (81,632)

I would have to say "Fly like a bird" followed by "Love takes time" are the greatest closing album tracks.

Hi there. It was not the Arsenio Hall show that you're referring to. Whitney was on the Byron Allen show when she made that comment. You can find it after the ninth minute. Hope this helps.

I agree about FLAB. I don't think she could have closed TEOM any better than that. It's just perfect.

Yes for the Loverboy Remix. That’s my #2 and my #1 is Fly Like A Bird.

I agree with EastEnders. EFA is one of her best tracks. Personally my #2 would be "I Wish You Well". Special mention to "Infinity" and "Loverboy Remix".

I agree that LTT and Outside are the greatest closing songs, but technically should LET count? It was a last minute addition that isn't even on all the CD's.

Oh no, you did not. I had forgotten about "Fly Like A Bird", see, that would be the second best closing track.

Dear Andrew, good to know you didn't combust to a simple joke. Some men have catfights too, I've seen it. I'm glad you're not that touchy. Regardless of your sexual orientation to me you're still a man and as far as I know your gender is male, and your name is Andrew or Drew. I wouldn't call you anything other than that unless you prefer otherwise. Now don't start a catfight with me, I don't want to scratch your flawless face. Lighten up.

Whitney talks Mariah comparison on Arsenio (81,623)
by Chicago Lamb from USA

Hey does anyone have the clip where Arsenio interviews Whitney asking what she thinks about the Mariah comparison? Whitney responds with "Mariah is a good singer. Mariah should be known for what Mariah does, not what I do. I don't hear it. Mariah has some of the same tones and inflections, runs." This clip used to be on YouTube, but I can no longer find it. Please send to miakitten@msn.com.

I agree. "Outside" is definitely the best closing track on any of her albums. Second would be "Looking In" and in third place would be "Love Takes Time"

Sheila, I just read her grasp for tabloid cash. If you noticed she claimed it happened to her at around six years old, for a few years and that they threatened M if she we're to tell anyone, clearly she is lying and putting M's name in the story to sell it. Allison is at least ten years older than her sister who wouldn't have been born during the time frame where she alleges these weird things happened. Ugh, Mimi has such terrible siblings. It is so odd that these two keep rearing up since 2016.

He is 100% correct. "Outside" is the greatest closing track on any album. "Love Takes Time" is #2.

How could I miss this gift? Eddie Eddie Eddie, you seem to emotionally self-combust at the thought of someone thinking you, or referring to you in any spirit, as anything less than masculine. Yet you swiftly label my retorts as my having "catfights". A "catfight" is a bitchy fight specifically between two women. Now, having a sense of humour, I won't self-combust. As for you? "She done already done had herses." Hah. Much love as always.

So weird for you guys in the UK "Everything Fades Away" was an actual track on Music Box, some of us on this side of the pond discovered it many years after. Even though I don't think of "Music Box" when I listen to it, not only because it wasn't part of the track listing here, but because it's doesn't flow well with the rest of the album, I love love love it. I agree with you, Andrew, it's definitely up there with "Till The End Of Time".

The greatest album closing track (81,614)
by Andrew from UK
| |
|

Here you go, a post about music. Listening to Everything Fades Away once a day lately. It is on a par with Till The End Of Time for being haunting and soulful but I don't think it gets enough love. The melody and instrumentation are a lot more restful and comforting than TTEOT. It definitely sounds more mature and a lot more 90s. Music Box is not complete without it: EFA and the title track soften what is otherwise an album evidently designed to show people she could do power like Whitney. Tough call, but it's the greatest album closing track that she has ever done.

I am just amazed how marvelous Mariah looks right now turning 48. Losing weight has really done so much with how she is posing and smiling these days. I am sure we won't have any photoshopping done for her new album cover.

The Tanaka Stigmata (81,611)
by Andrew from UK
| |

If Mariah was a guy and Tanaka a woman nobody would dream of insulting the woman with claims that she is money hungry and/or a prostitute and so on. Me thinks some people stan so much here that Mariah could date Jesus and they would find a way to pick holes in him (come on, you gotta laugh at that one - gonna have to call this post The Tanaka Stigmata).
