GTFO (83,788)

I actually liked it. Definitely an improvement from I Don't. The song is amusing because it has a slow beat but the lyrics are ruthless lol. When I saw the video last night I thought it's awful, another I Don't mess. Then I saw it again today and I kinda got it. Mariah is in an apartment probably must after sending her man out the door, dishes are undone and she's adjusting. It's not high concept, very 80s even 90s, I would have wanted a bit more interesting, like Mariah walking down the street or driving. Still overall, it's growing on me, her best effort since Beautiful, in fact that video really has no concept either.

I like when someone tells me to GTFO out of here and they get lots of thumbs up. For every thumbs up that's another muppet that still reads what I write - so here, have one from me.

My experience with the Meet & Greet (83,786)
by RD from South Africa
| |
|
|
I was lucky enough to get a meet and greet ticket for the September 10th show in Vegas. Mariah did not disappoint at all as her vocals sounded really good live and she even did a snippet of "Outside" for the first time ever. She looked amazing, very classy and the show was sold out. Everybody stood up from their seats for the entire performance and went wild after every song. The few of us who had meet and greet passes were told to wait after the show at a designated point. We were then verified and taken downstairs to a waiting room and waited for about 15 minutes. A young lady came out and told us that Mariah is in the next room. She gave us a briefing about what to do and what not to do. We were called in, one at a time. When it was my turn, Mariah called my name and I almost froze. I told her that I came all the way from South Africa for this show and she thanked me and was so nice. She said to me that she loves my jacket and that she saw me in the audience. I told her how much her music has meant to me and that I felt blessed just standing next to her. She was really sweet and kind. I brought a gift for her but had to give it to her assistant who would screen it first before Mariah received it. I told Mariah that I brought a gift for her and she said "thanks". I had about 3 minutes with Mariah and then they took the photo. In the photo, Mariah put her arms around my shoulder and I put mine over hers, but I see that, when they sent me the photo, it was edited out as you can see on my profile pic. I don't know why they did that but overall, I am so grateful for the experience. I must say, in reality, Mariah looks extremely beautiful. The pictures and videos of her do not do justice as she looks and smells like a goddess when you see her face to face. I will never forget this experience as it was priceless.

The song is good, everything about it just flows. The video is the typical MC we always see in videos but hey, it was done tastefully unlike Infinity and I Don't. I can't criticize it that much because it is the most decent song she released since #Beautiful and it's just a buzz single so I'll just reserve that hate and mean comments with the actual lead single of MC15 haha. Have a nice day everyone.

Congratulations Mariah. I love the song. My boyfriend, who's very harsh on Mariah, loves GTFO too. It's a new sound for her. I love the arrangements. It has a retro vibe but yet sounds current. No rappers, new arrangements, no "verse - chorus - verse - chorus - bridge - chorus" kinda song. Good effort, Mariah. I usually don't like Mariah overusing the whisper tone but it fits with the hypnotic and smooth mood of the song. I don't enjoy the video that much, although I like that it makes you feel like a voyeur ha ha. I like the lightening and she looks stunning but I don't like her sexualized image. She doesn't need that, we all know she's sexy but I wish she would drop that a little bit. What I enjoy the most is that this is new material. It fits her current voice, and if she brings a whole new album this could mean she would stop singing Vision of Love and Hero again and again. I'm tired of the Vegas residency and tired of seeing her perform the same f*cking songs instead of singing others from her huge catalogue. We all fell in love with 90's Mariah. No current artist could ever compare to the first, let's say 15 years of her career. After TEOM her creativity, voice and image started to get worse. She made some good tracks and she gave some good performances in this last decade, but we all felt she needed to explore new music styles; no more We Belong Together sound (DFAU, Bye Bye, Angels Cry...), no more rappers, no more r&b. She's too young to rely on her greatest hits, and I'm glad she's back with new music. At least GTFO is out of her comfort zone. It hasn't got a lot of layering and backing vocals which sometimes can annoy me. Sometimes less is more. This being said, I love to listen to GTFO at home, it has an intimate sexy and smoothy sound, but it's not a song to perform live. It wouldn't sound good. I don't care about if she promote this live or not, as long as she brings new material and singles like this. By the way I hate that she's working again with JD. As Andrew said a long time ago, yes, "we all know this is is". I hope the rappers featured on this album don't annoy me that much.

The Social Justice Warrior diatribe about ageism being why Mariah hasn't sold anything in a decade is, ironically, getting old. Young people buy music the most. They identify with young artists. It's not an -ism or representative of bad character for them to do so - in the same way that young people tend to date people of their own age and not 50 year olds. However I recall Cher reaching number one at a ripe age. If you have a stone winner of a song it will get noticed no matter how many grey hairs you are hiding.

The profanity is not lazy, it works well with the song, the theme etc. What is lame is that Mariah is resorting to cheap tricks to get noticed. She continues to cheapen herself without hindrance. The video is shameful and hideous. Is she so content with being known as an alcoholic lush? Has she left no self-respect? No sense of decency? No new ideas? No money for an actual video? I think the world has paid more dues looking at those tits than she did money buying them. And of the song, calling it a "buzz" single is disingenuous at best. It is from the new album. It has a video. It is available to buy. It is her lead single no matter what tripe her PR machine comes up with "just in case". And, yet, it's quite good. But Anytime You Need A Friend or Honey it is not. You won't be playing it for decades to come.

I loved the GTFO track from the start. Looks like Mimi has EDM artist Porter Robinson to thank for that. Good and interesting pairing of his song Goodbye to the World and GTFO of Mariah's World. The cuss word doesn't bother me but I do wish Mimi when would switch up from the "you misled me/cheated, but I'm stronger and better than you" theme. Give herself and us some new angles on the break up bop.

The good? At least it's being released at the same time the song is dropped. Seems like RocNation has their stuff in order. The bad? Oh where do I start? It reminds me of I'll Be Loving You Long Time and HATE-U. Oh and I Don't. Needs to break the "I'm the only one who needs to be on camera" trend. I grow bored of Mariah showing off sexy outfits. It's old. Where are the fun playful videos that tell a story? I will move passed this unless she puts out an edited version that I can listen to, with or without kids. Carey on. Oh and yes, I'll buy the album. Always do.

GTFO if it goes to Number 1 (83,771)
by Sheila from United States

The promotion. The video. The Drake beat behind her sexy youthful lyrics. This song is not for lambs, it's for the new generation who are bold, angry and sexually free. If this song goes to number 1 - she breaks history all over again. Lord, fly this bird to number 1.

For me, it's a step towards the right direction. I looove the chill R&B vibes and how muted everything is, yet still retains that signature MC sound. It's def not her best, not an instant classic, but a huge step forward after I Don't. She managed to making cussing so pure and angelic. I hope that With You would be in the same vein, but with more dynamics and with more lush melodies. 8/10 for me.

I agree Stacey. Sonically the song is different, modern, and fresh. I love the atmosphere and mood and for me it seems similar to "Unforgettable", which I loved. She's given up on the souped up belts and whistles that she can't do live anymore which is a step in the right direction too. I hope that continues throughout the album. Vocally it is very Memoirs meets Charmbracelet, and one of her better vocal deliveries in recent efforts. But, like you, I find the profanity lazy and unnecessary. She is a gifted and intelligent songwriter when she puts her mind to it. Thanks for sharing the clean version.

First off she looked really pretty in the video, but it was too focused on the pretty though. From the title of the song I envisioned a video with her lighting a man's clothes on fire in the front yard like Angela Bassett did on Waiting to Exhale. I really wanted an aggressive/angry video to match the title. It's not a bad video, but there was just so much more that could have been done besides beauty shots. Maybe they are saving the good stuff for the official single.

As you mentioned, I really like the song but the video is a disappointment. She looks freakin' incredible but this concept was done before and better with the likes of Crybaby and Shake It Off. However, the RocNation PR machine is delivering; there is a positive vibe about Mimi that concerns her music. To be continued...

How about just tell the kids to not cuss without making a fuss about it. My kids probably know all the bad words on the dictionary but don't say them. I tell them children can't use bad words because they don't know when and how to use it, so it is better to not say them. Toddlers will always repeat anything back that they hear and the deal is to just not overreact. A 2 years old won't go around insulting people with such words. And bigger kids already understand the concept of not using such words because they could hurt people if they use them wrong. Not trying to get to you but I think you are making a big deal out of it.

GTFO (after repeated listening) (83,764)
by this_is_qhm from the Philippines
| |
|
|
GTFO works because of its directness and relatability, but mostly due to contrast. The aggressive theme against the mellow, inviting background. The hateful repeated one-line chorus sung in a blase, almost nonchalant way. The way her rapid-fire delivery of the post-chorus stands out from the relaxed tempo. And of course the provocative title against Mariah's image as an artist. It is hot and cold at the same time without being warm, if you get what I mean. It sort of reminds me of Selena Gomez's Good For You in a way, with its simple, unremarkable melody that somehow sticks due to the great delivery. Mariah has never been the artist that resorts to shock tactics to catch everybody's attention and get the message through (and being suddenly willfully explicit doesn't exactly qualify as a shocking move especially by today's standards) but it's definitely interesting, even exciting to see her do this especially at this stage of her career. Call it desperate, but it's actually doing really well for a buzz track, especially one coming from a legacy artist. With her best standing on iTunes (worldwide) for a non-holiday song in years (with no guest feature), this strategy has played out well so far. But it's still early and we may very well just be giving Mariah and her team too much credit, at least for now. I guess we'll have to wait and see if this track has done its job well enough for its success to spill over to With You next month, which is its role anyway. Still, this has been the most press coverage her new music has gotten since 2013, so that's great. So fingers crossed, guys, and we might as well enjoy the music.
