Re: Glitter era vs now (76,437) (76,467)

The saga and the drama of the Glitter era was about an enormously succesful popstar facing the reality of being a human being. This "era" is about a delusional diva not facing reality at all.

I'm more like: is that leg insurance she got, worth anything anymore? It's not as much about her weight for me, but how she dresses. I doubt she get to see the real, non photoshopped, versions of the pictures of herself.

Glitter vs current era (76,464)
by Mimi L. from Empower Your Highlighter

|

Let me just put it in this way, the disaster of Glitter happened because Mariah was working tirelessly to defend her success and establish position as a legend-to-be, and now she is actively working to sabotage herself and the image she shed blood and tears and sweat to build up. What I mean by "defend" is a lot of people always belittled Mariah saying Tommy bought Mariah her success (which is bull shit, she earned it), so ever since separating from Tommy she went out of her way to do everything to prove that she is responsible for her success and her talent has gotten her where she is. This was especially important when she moved to a new label and started afresh, a new chapter. The pressure of having to prove that she doesn't need Tommy to stay successful combined with Tommy trying to sabotage her is what I believe led her to collapse. So she fell, defending her own honor. But what she is doing now is simply beyond anyone's comprehension. It's like she is pushing and pushing the limits to see how bad she can turn her image. She seems to be self sabotaging and self destructing. There is no logical explanation as to why Mariah is doing what she is doing now.

Another outfit that screams why? Who is telling MC that this is looking good, her "team"? Anyway shopping won't make it better. Everyone knows she has thousands of beautiful dresses and outfits to enjoy. Mariah should use this trip to Spain for rethinking. Her image once was almost holy and now it seems like she doesn't care anymore. But what really worries me, is that she looks unhappy.

Drew, if Mariah said it, then it must be true. Right? This is a verse from "Side Effects": "Wakin' up scared some nights Still dreamin' 'bout the violent times Still a little protective 'bout the people That I let inside Still a little defensive Thinkin' folks be tryin' to run my life Still a little depressed Inside I fake a smile and deal with the side effects" That's the evidence that he was violent, she said it in "Side Effects" and we as good lambs shouldn't question it. We all know Tommy wasn't a saint. He was obsessed and even tried to sabotage her, but I don't blindly believe everything Mariah says, especially after Mariah's World. She lost credibility with me. The truth is usually somewhere in the middle.

Interesting. I wonder what he thinks of all this mess now that he has moved on. I always wonder why she kept him a secret, well... sort of a secret.

I only read your posts when I want to have a laugh, you're pretty funny. It's just that there's nobody else here who can make me fall out laughing the way you do. Other than that, nothing in what you have to say is ever realistic or factual or even interesting. And I know you read my posts, if you didn't, you wouldn't be replying. Oops. Bye Edouard.

The violence verification (76,459)

It Tommy Mottola was "violent", why has he never faced any charges? Why didn't Mariah expose him? Why did she *thank* him in speeches years after leaving him? Why have I never once heard her say "He's used to hit me"? Where is there any evidence of this?

Glitter era vs now (Glitter era still had vocals) (76,457)

One word: Cher. Cher came back over 50 years old with Believe and had a huge hit. Mariah is a better vocalist and songwriter. We can pray that it happens again. But at this rate of the game, she is slowly destroying her career.

Stella needs to stop dressing her. All her looks in recent years have been tacky and gross. And looks like she's gaining weight again. She should really try working out to keep herself tone and to control her weight.

Holy Moly, Edouard, you just made me have an epiphany. I see it all clear now. Mariah is putting out a series of mediocre singles so people get really disappointed with her music and not focus on it. For that she's bringing the attention to her tits, Stella and the posse. And then, she'll come back with a killer album at the end of 2037 and retire. Wow, I never thought of it that way. I always thought you were delusional, but you've opened my eyes. Mariah really knows what she's doing, she always has.

Glitter was worse because she still cared and the people still cared so it was tough seeing her not be able to break through. This last few years since 2015 are just pointless.

She's been wearing this for over six months now. Here is the problem with Mariah. What is she even thinking? The old Mariah would never. If this is her idea of keeping her career going or being buzzworthy then she needs to give it up already.

You are wrong. Mariah has had many great performances since she started her Vegas residency. That's a fact. During the Glitter era a lot of people complained about her voice and her lack of energy. To me her "Hero" tribute is her best live version of the song (the most heartfelt), but many here don't like it. I believe Mariah has sung it better in term of technique during her Vegas residency.

Legacy, storytelling and politics (76,449)
by Edouard from France

|

Mariah's dream has always been to have a long career. She's been saying it since her first interviews. I believe Mariah is doing everything she can to honor this wish but the industry isn't working with her. Never really has. I think Mariah has always had to work harder than most. I think Mariah's storytelling implies having obstacles to overcome (poverty, racism, controlling and violent husband, sexism, etc.) and the media is particularly hungry for that. they love to tear a successful artist (especially women) down. And we eat it up. Mariah knows what she's doing. She always has. A lot of people here think all she's ever done is music. Mariah is a effing politician, she's had to stand up for herself countless time inside and out of the industry. I think she's taking full control of everything now. She might be clumsy in her choices but at list she's not a puppet.

For once I can agree with Sheila. Lol I believe that LNADSML performance was the only misstep at that time, but I won't even hold that one against her.

Definitely now. In the Glitter era, you had the necessities for a comeback available. Most importantly, the public felt sorry for her, unlike now with her exaggerated diva persona.

I don't really know how big mess Glitter era was but I can say that the two is too different to be compared. When Glitter happened, Mariah was at the height of her career so she had more chance to redeem herself after that (TEOM), but this time, it's like she's already at the 4th quarter of her career to experience this and to label it as an "messy era" because there's no way she'll be on top again. The expectation from her is not to be #1 anymore but a stable career and life and putting out great pieces of work especially with her talent. She must mastered by now the how to be a legend 101 but she flips in the other direction so yeah good luck to that.

Say what you will about Glitter but Mariah was still an incredible singer during all of those performances except the lipped "Last night a Dj saved my life". The music was still solid and the vocals were still lovely. This era is an embarrassment to her legacy.

This one. I can't hold Glitter against her because of her ending up in the hospital. At least during Glitter she had great performances before and after the hospital stint and she was promoting.
