Re: Glitter era vs now (76,437) (76,442)

In the off chance that your query wasn't rhetorical, I'd say the Glitter era, as disastrous it was for Mariah both personally and professionally, is still better because she learned from it and grew stronger because of it. The reason was valid. It truly was a breakdown. She still had the public's support, which showed throughout the Charmbracelet era. By contrast, I don't even think you can call what's been happening post-Idol an era at all - it's more like a nightmare we still keep wishing to wake up from but instead keeps pulling us deeper, taking turns for the worse on almost a daily basis. This mess-fest that's been happening for the past 4 years now is Mariah throwing away everything she's worked hard for during her first 2 decades in the industry. You can really see just how different the Glitter era was from today by simply observing the public response to what's happening. Living through 2001 was painful. 2013 onwards is just exhausting. The fact that people have gone from sympathy to apathy is very telling. This isn't MJ or Whitney levels of depressing - at least not yet. I hate to say it but she may well be on her way there if she continues to regress at the rate she does now. Thankfully Roc and Roe are there to keep her sane.

I think the majority of the Margulies compositions were pre-record deal and the Rhett Lawrence ones after she had been signed.

I also think this era is worse than Glitter. I loved Glitter, Mariah was working too much, the movie flopped and MC had the "public breakdown". But then she seemed to recover slowly and took care of herself. That's what I miss now. I can't see any recovery or help. She seems lost and broken and is surrounded with stupid and toxic people. If you "follow" Mariah's music career since 22 years, it hurts to see her like this.

WBT (original) samples Two Occassions. It's the line where she says "Then I hear Babyface, 'I only think of you', and it's breaking my heart." Babyface was the lead singer of The Deele. Mariah then sang the whole chorus on the remix.

Her voice is too damn chesty for her not to be straining. In the Glock performances she's not even comfortable within her usual comfort range. Her belts are too chesty and too heavy, and she's not using enough head resonance. I doubt she would want to remove the nodules, but the least she could do is see a good vocal trainer. No, not just good, he/she should be able to rehabilitate her voice. We need Gary Catona, the guy who managed to salvage what's left of Whitney's voice in her last days.

Sent from up above (76,434)

I wander when did Mariah write this song. Musically it is so 90's. The song reminds me [of] "Woooops now" by Janet and "Say you'll be there" by the Spice Girls, but obviously Mariah wrote it first. [The] other uptempo on the album sound very late 8's to me where as "Sent from up above" is timeless. I would say it's probably [one] of her most timeless uptempo along with Dreamlover, Fantasy (the remix with ODB), ABMBB, Honey, Breakdown, ILT, TMB, [and] #Beautiful.

Haha no that's just me being a mess and starting things. I was joking but also partly serious, I mean it's almost monitored visits when Stella is always around, watching, listening, planning, plotting (haha ok I got carried away). I said that because even Shawn doesn't get to see Mariah much nowadays like when he said he hasn't seen her or talked to her since Christmas up until his birthday.

Too many fillers (76,431)
by Jamie from UK
| |
|
|
The problem with Mariah is that she's lost all expression in her face due to too many fillers. I just watched behind the scenes of Don't Forget About Us and you can see there how natural she is, yes she'll have had Botox there but her face looked more fresh and had character. Now it's completely frozen and lacking any expression. Also her mood then was much happier, she just seemed more free. I'm sure she was on medication then too, but now she just seems out of it and regid and she seems to have lost her charm. It saddens me to see her like this, surely the old Mariah is in there somewhere and I'm not talking 1990, the last time she looked her best was 2008, I just wonder what has happened since then to change her whole persona. Surely she must want to be that person again?

Yes, Mariah and team have brought so much silly drama since the tour announcement. What could have been a positive professional moment has turned into a potential flop, or worse a fiasco. All she had to do was practice, record some new material while touring, instead they gave us tabloid fodder and one arguably terrible single with I Don't.

She shouldn't feel any kind of way honestly. I mean both her and the idol producers spent time dissing each other. She should be happy it's not her doing it. I was excited about the tour because I felt it was a huge opportunity, but with these recent performances I'm a little nervous now.

I think that's why she has gone from dissing the show everytime she's asked about it to recently saying "I don't think they'd want me back, I'm also unavailable at the moment but I hope they have fun", when she was asked what she thinks about Idol returning and whether she would go back. That answer made me happy because it's a rare mature answer nowadays.

I thought the tour was a good idea when first announced but with everything that has transpired since then, it's, as you said, so blah. I'm over here like: "What's the point of this again? They're still planning on doing this tour together? Wow." I'm over it. I also have zero faith that it will go off without a hitch or rather I have zero faith that Mariah's portion will go off without a hitch.

That was intentional. She interpolated the song by The Deele the same way she used 2 lines from "If You Think you're lonely now" by Bobby Womack. Mariah is a genius like that with her samples and interpolations.

Mariah is not going to stop the antics anytime soon because she's too vain and her ego is too bloated. For more than half her life she's been told she's the greatest, the biggest selling, the voice etc etc., because she made amazing music that people responded to. Since that that kind of attention has declined over the last few years and the hits have dried up, she just creates her own reality, or her leeches keep her living in this bubble where all she hears are the yaaas queen and skinny legend bull.#% comments surrounding her trashy projects and image. And of course she's terrified of being called old and is trying desperately to stay relevant. If only she knew that sincerity, humility and using the amazing voice and songwriting skills she has is all that's needed to be regarded as the living legend she is while still remaining in the spotlight.

I noticed it too that after having the kids, her choices weren't good at all. You can think her children would've brought stability but I guess like Hilton said with the divorce and accident everthing went down. I hope the medication will stop, Michael Jackson had that horrible accident with the fire for a commercial and a lot of people said that's when the medical addiction started. Maybe it's a combination of medicine and some drinks to deal with all the pain. And we all know it hasn't helped anybody ever. Mariah was always so strong inside, one reason I admired her. But now she just seems very fragile and looks like she needs help.

The old Mariah (76,420)
by T from USA
| |
|
|
If Mariah didn't take American Idol in 2012, if she didn't fall in 2013, if she would've just released an album instead, none of this would be happening right now. This is all a result of some very bad decisions after having kids. She was so level headed and classy at one time and she could've taken that old spirit she had into motherhood. Her whole image could've been based on the next phase of her life and career. She would've been revered as a legend and she could've had the same popularity she used to have but now on a part time basis. It's too late. It's been five years of bad choices and bad press. Plus I'm not sure if she's not heavily medicated due to what happened to her shoulder. Or maybe she's just drinking away the pain.

She looks lost, sad and uncertain and just not looking well. I hope she cancels the tour and goes somewhere to help with whatever she's dealing with. It's heartbreaking to see all the leeches around her enjoying her lifestyle while not giving a shit about Mariah's well being.

Denial (76,418)
by Lara from Middle East

The Mariah Carey we all fell in love with is gone. I don't if we - the fans - are in denial and still hoping to see the singer that used her voice for recognition or Miss Carey herself is in denial and still herself the 30 year skinny woman energetic and walking on heels like it's nothing. I feel sad when I read her news. It all went downhill since her injury then followed by her divorce. Something is wrong and I wish she would come clear about it.
