How magical Mariah's vocals are on this track. I think it's her crowning glory. Not her song. Only on it for a little while. But insanely magical. Who could do it like she did it? Who could steal the show in a few seconds? Kitchen windows and tea need to disappear. Mariah, find your soul again.

Good points Giselle. Being a bigger woman (yes I'm a fatty, lol) I am in no position to hassle Mariah about her weight. Even when she's bigger I'd hardly call her fat. I've seen many fans go on and on about it, but the problem is not her weight. As you said it's her fashion choices. No matter how small or big she is if she doesn't wear things that fit whatever body she has, she'll never look right.

Mariah's weight (76,213)
by Giselle UrbanPoshBeauty from US of A

There's definitely a difference in European standards bs American standards when it comes to "weight". To say Mariah is "fat" and "big" is like saying Kim K's booty is real. It also bugs me when men wether straight or gay feel the need to tell a woman she's fat or needs to lose weight. If Mariah is comfortable in her skin then let the woman live. Also Mariah is many things but fat/big isn't one of them. She's not as skinny like she used to be but she still looks good. I think for the clothes she wants to wear vs should be wearing maybe losing a few pounds would help. She simply needs to find a good stylist who can dress her for the shape in the mirror vs what's in her head. True T.

I always admire your sentiments as being grounded in reality. As a gay guy, you probably don't feel negative towards Mariah for not being pro-gay - to be disappointed that someone doesn't advance or subscribe to your own cause is ridiculous. But a spade is a spade. Mariah avoids politics like the plague. Gay icon she is not. Someone loved by gays she is. Talking like Yoda I am.

I really enjoying reading everyones perspective on this. It's very true, is MC truly a gay icon, or does she simply love her gay fans? I do remember Mariah doing an interview in Canada openly supporting gay marriage back '06 (we had just legalized gay marriage in 2005), and also over the years celebrating gay couples in her audience, like when she brought the couple on stage for the proposal, and then of course her gaungles who were on the only strong relationship she witness as a child. I've personally always seen Mariah as a private/personal gay icon, where she is publicly apolitical, but through her music, lyrics, and conducts helps to build up and encourage her gay lambs from the background. She's not out there like Gaga making waves and smashing boundaries. But on a personal level she has. However I suppose whether you're gay, a person of colour, or societally disadvantaged, she does the same thing for you. One thing, there is no doubt she has inspired the drag scene ascetically. She's not at the forefront of the gay movement, but she's done her quiet part by empower her gay fans, who have then gone out into the world and made waves.

Mariah - gay icon (76,209) (76,210)
by ADAM from USA

Don't get it twisted. Whatever Mariah is peddling to the gay audience whether it's nail polish or makeup, she's pandering for money. Not authenticity. She has been a sell out and hungry for attention for a long time now. This lifestyle she's subscribed to by way of Stella and co is her downfall. She's not making real music and does not deserve a cent from the gay audience. It's disrespectful to me. I wish she would just either put out good music or just be with her family in private. But she loves the limelight too much and clearly doesn't have any friends not on the payroll to tell her the truth.

Mariah supported gay marriage before it was popular. I remember her doing an interview talking about her guncles. I believe their names were Bert and Ernie or something close to it. She said they were the closest thing to a healthy relationship that she had during her childhood. You also have to remember this was a time when it was cool to use homophobic lyrics in music. i.e. Eminem. I've also seen Mariah celebrate a gay couple on her stage as the one guy proposed to his boyfriend. I also want to mention that I love the fact that Mimi does her best to stay out of politics and I feel like a lot of celebrities exploit the gay fan bases. Mariah is authentic without over doing it and I'm excited to see her pride collection in 5 days.

Her efforts are not really that conscious enough to say that she's a gay icon. She's not like "Oh I will do this for the gay community", I think she's more like "Oh they love it? They can relate to it? Sure." She just embraces it because people said so but I don't see her joining a movement or creating something solely for the LGBTQ community. For sure she'll agree on this because she's to apolitical to categorize herself, "we love everybody" as she always says. But if being a gay icon can mean that we just love the people who loves us back even if they don't have an advocacy for the community, then she is.

I think to loose weight is the last thing which she should do. There are other "problems". To stay healthy is most important, to fire the Russian clan and find some inner peace is worth more. I agree that clothes should fit, but to name somebody fat is so mean. A singer doesn't need model size (by the way, I hate those skinny girls, looks more ill than alive). But again clothes should fit and to wear "wrong" clothes/sizes isn't a good idea, if you're in the public.

Mariah - gay icon (76,205)
by Lee from UK
| |
|
|
Mariah is only a gay icon when she chooses to be or when she needs to be. As far as I am aware, she has never attended a pride event or performed at such an event. The only time of which I am aware that she has shown mainstream support for the LGBT community was when she accepted a GLAAD award (for what only the gods knows). Did Mariah ever publicly support same-sex marriage, the repeal of "don't ask, don't tell"? I ask because I don't know. Furthermore, Mariah is very non-political which has always been a clever move because if you're too political you can run this risk of alienating some of your fan base. Mariah wrote the song Outside about being multi-racial but she has also spoken in the past about some of her gay fans also relating to that song for obvious reasons. Does this make her a gay icon? Probably not. However, the gays love a diva.

Why is Mariah a gay icon? What makes a gay icon? Yes, the majority of her male fans are probably gay because gay people like emotional and pop driven music. Does that make her a gay *icon*? I don't think so. Gay people liked the Spice Girls. Are they gay icons? Far from it. Gay icons that immediately come to mind are Madonna, Lady Gaga, Elton John, et al. Just because a fan happens to be gay and likes Mariah surely doesn't make her a gay icon. And calling someone a gay icon is perhaps a little awkward (for want of a better word) to the straight people that like them.

Sometimes there's a time for coaching and suggestive help; other times you just have to say it bluntly. Mariah isn't listening to any advice from fans, friends or families alike, it seems. I've stated before there is nothing wrong with being big. If you are naturally big, fine. Some big women are stunning. However, if you are a thin woman who is eating and drinking yourself into oblivion, you *should* be ashamed and you should stop or seek help to stop. No amount of social justice warrior battling will erase what is simply a self-evident truth. If you are damaging yourself, you need to stop or seek help. Mariah is extremely big. It is indicative of her life that she is damaging herself on many levels, physically and professionally. I have extolled the virtue here for many years to stop pussyfooting around Mariah, stop indulging her and tell her the truth. People didn't and her career is all but lost. Time to be blunt. She's fat. She needs to lose weight. She did it in 1999. She did it in 2008. She can do it now. Would suggest, however, that the lights are on, but nobody's been home for a while.

I have to agree with both Special K, and Mimi L this was a nice song with a great melody that could have heated up on the R&B chart but the cheap video killed the vibe instantly while certain shots were beautiful. Mariah herself came off looking awkward and cheap as hell and it hurts me to say that because I think MC is one beautiful woman. I love the sexy confident Mariah who is not trying so hard to get unnecessary cheap attention. Have a great day my Archives family.

I agree it has that haunting melody and I love the lyrics, the chorus is awesome. And I too think that the song could have done a lot better on the charts if it was promoted nicely and the video was better. I wouldn't want to change anything about the song itself. It's one of the rare song from Mariah's latest list of singles that I loved from the first listen and didn't have to force myself to like it.

You're Mine (Eternal) is perfect to me. That song just takes me to a certain place. If Mariah promoted that song more it would have been a bigger hit on the R&B charts. Too bad the video was whack as hell.

Take a 10 year break. It saddens me to say this but I almost want to see her fail with the upcoming album and lose it all. The Russian is no good for you woman. This is sad that she's so blinded. I guess we can get a juicier Behind The Music or Lifetime movie when she loses everything. Sigh.

Actually he said he was referring to quitting AGT as well. But he tries hard not to shade Mimi and I am sure to keep peace in order to peacefully see his kids, so quitting IG for a while is smart. He also said on his last rant that he was just there for his kids and basically not playing along with her latest stunt. That's how I understood him. People ignore his vlogs, but he gets a lot off his chest that way it seems.
