What I miss (73,806)

I miss it when Mariah wrote sad songs over upbeat music, but you didn't realize it was a sad or depressing song at all. Dreamlover, Breakdown, Heartbreaker etc.

Babyface's background vocals are so intrinsic to "Take a Vow" and its greatness that I don't think the song would be the same if it were stripped off his vocals. While Madonna doesn't posses a powerful voice, her delivery on this song was great, and that video was pure art.

Licia, I believe that quality in Mariah's music started declining when she stared cutting and pasting for the "Angel's Advocate" project. Some of her collaborations came out great, like "Angels Cry", "Up Out My Face" and "I Can't Wait to Hate". but I can clearly see why they never released it. R-Kelly is a great lyricist and could give Mariah a run for her money vocally, but it was such a let down. Another wasted opportunity was the duet with Mary J Blige, why o why? When I got the Deluxe version, the first thing I did was listen to those two tracks, I was especially more interested in her duet with Mary, since I've always loved "It's a Wrap", but 1.5 minutes into it, I deleted it. I did the same with the R-Kelly duet. Mariah and Babyface did magic in the 90's, but I don't know if she could do anything remotely similar, in terms of quality, to "Never Forget You", "Melt Away" or "Everytime I Close My Eyes" these days. I think Mariah has gotten lazy and careless with her music.

Is it genetic? (73,802)

My sister in law just sent me a short video of my 6-year old niece singing "My All" with such passion that I think Mariah has found herself some hardcore competition. My sister in law says that my niece heard it play on her YouTube playlist, and she made her play it for her about 10 times now. How could this even happen? My whole family knows I'm a fan of Mariah's, but how did this little lamb came out to be? She requested to hear more, so I made a playlist based on the fact that she says that Mariah's voice sounds like an angel. 1. Love Takes Time 2. Till The End of Time 3. Hero 4. Dreamlover 5. Always Be My Baby 6. Underneath the Stars 7. Open Arms 8. Jesus Born on This Day 9. All I Want for Christmas Is You 10. My All 11. Butterfly 12. Fourth of July 13. Honey

Babyface did his thing on Take a Bow. I too want him and Mariah working together again. I also want a proper duet between the two. Unlike the R. Kelly/Mariah combo I wanted, we know that Mariah and Babyface mesh together.

Mariah's masterpiece - Edward and Andrew (73,793)
by Randy from USA
| |
|
|
I just feel like with the singles we have gotten without albums here of late only one is worthy of playing anywhere near my faves, "Almost Home' and for me Mariah's masterpiece is a difficult topic. It would be the song you love to hate. The only problem is her vocal isn't that good. If I had to pick another it would be Butterfly but the video kills that one. So then I go to my third choice, My All. Here is why, the vocal, the lyric, the video, the remixes, the chart success all nod to perfection. Can you really think of another song where everything came together? And Andrew I would take you up on your offer so we can play RTD on an old radio sitting on the curb of a cobblestone street while watching the sunrise over some cathedral, but I may be a bit too ratchet for Europe. Edward I have to get to NYC so we can have our game of Mariah Carey-oke.

A little joke. Question: What is Mariah's favorite car? Answer: Lamb-orghini. I saw some hash tag "lamborghini". I thought it was about lambs. Then I realized it's about the car.

Tevin's first two albums are awesome. What songs are you liking so far? My favorites from him are I'm Ready, Shh,Tell Me What You Want Me to Do, Can We Talk, Tomorrow, Round and Round, and Always In My Heart. There's another song he's on from the Jason's Lyric soundtrack called You Will Know, but he's not singing by himself. It's a group song with a whole bunch of male R&B singers. People like Brian McKnight, Keith Sweat and Gerald Levert.

The 90s were R&B's golden age, no question. Mariah, TLC, Boyz II Men, Brandy, Aaliyah, Monica, Janet, Lisa Stansfield (heck even George and Madonna jumped in). The 80s were just a precursor to that thanks to Whitney, Anita, El Debarge, Al Jarreau, George Benson, again Janet, and Prince.

True. To me Madge's best work is also her one of her most overlooked and underrated. Most people tend to remember the Madonna albums that contain her biggest uptempo hits because Madonna is almost always associated to dance music. That's why Bedtime Stories is often forgotten, because the singles released from it were not really dance hits (the title track went unnoticed). But Secret, Take A Bow, Human Nature, Love Tried To Welcome Me and Forbidden Love are too seductive to ignore. Her vocals were most impressive during the Ray of Light era, but were most inviting during the Bedtime Stories era. So plush and warm.

I love love love Take A Bow. If it weren't the perfect fit for Madonna, it's something I would wish were Mariah's. Three seconds into that song and you can instantly recognize it. And the video is a masterclass in elegance. To me, it's Madonna's best ballad. A masterpiece for sure.

Randy, I love your posts. It seems you have already figured out that every time you mention "Right to Dream" in any of your posts, it is as if 'Drew gets a stab wound, lol. I also love Mariah's deeper songs, and I won't say "Right to Dream" again because 'Drew might end up losing his beautiful hair, and I don't want him getting extensions from Mariah's seller from 2016. I still want him posting here.

Mariah is doing disco/party music. The real question is why won't the record company (LA Reid) release those type of singles? Jermaine Dupri produced YDKWTD. We can still put him in the closet but let's not lock the door. Shout out to Q Tip. He produced Meteorite.
