Mayhem or mess (108,328) by Bobby A from United States
If Mayhem is the best Lady Gaga has to offer this point in her career, then her albums #1-3 will always be her best albums. I wanted to ask the Waterloo Records clerk to put on something else for my in store listening experience.

I'm not sure I agree with Mariah's thoughts on Terrence Howard for the role of Dice. I think Max Beesley worked well because of his acting talent and because he was also a musician. I do not agree that Beesley was chosen over Howard due to racism.

I'm also not a fan of Terrence Howard as a person because of his history of misogyny and abuse of women. One of the incidents happened around the time he was cast in "Glitter". There are better African-American male actors who actually treat women with respect and decency.

While we are in the topic of Mariah's movies, I remember Mariah wrote in her book that she wanted Terrence Howard to play the male lead for Glitter (at that time it was called All That Glitters). If only those powers that be listened to her, then maybe the fate of the movie would turn out different and they would just release the Loverboy (Firecracker version) because the chorus is so much fun, catchy and boppy. Plus if the movie did well and the first single did well too, then there would be no breakdown episode of Mariah and subsequently there would be no mockery of Mariah in all the medias at that time.

"Double O Soul" sounded so good. It's annoying that Chris Tucker left the project. At least we have the [Honey] video, Mariah is a hidden [Bond] girl for sure. And I always wanted a [Bond] song by Mariah.

Hmm, I don't think so. Evita was really a perfect role for Madonna. I was surprised back then by the acting. I love bio-pics in general. I wonder what could be a perfect role for MC? A lot of you will laugh but somehow I can imagine Mariah to be in a fantasy movie.

Yes, she can still make it happened. Does she really want it though? I have the strangest feeling today MC is taking her time releasing new music because her creative spirit has diminished. When I looked back at the E=MC2 era and she lost all of that weight, MC had a such a go get them mindset. She lost that mindset 7 years ago.

Well, I think Mariah was actively discouraged by Tommy to take roles that she was offered in the 1990s. She has alluded to the fact that there were film roles offered to her that made other people movie stars. I also think a lot of her efforts to break into movies during the 1997-2001 period were derailed and sabotaged. If you recall, she cut her Butterfly Tour short because she wanted to do a movie called "Double O Soul" with Chris Tucker but then Tucker backed out, leaving Mariah with nothing to show for her investment in that project. She was also attached to a project called "The Sweet Science", which seemed very interesting but never came to fruition (most likely due to the response to "Glitter"). "Wisegirls" never went anywhere outside of the Sundance circuit, even though it was an interesting project.

The role she took in "Tennessee" was solid and her role in "Precious" was small but interesting. I think she could get away with another attempt at making movies. Whitney did "Sparkle" pretty late in her career. Diana Ross did a few made for TV films in the 90s when she was in her 50s. It's still possible for Mariah to do something different if she wants to.

A little late on this, but I always wondered why Mariah didn't have a skin care line. She has the best skin ever. It's flawless actually. She should have launched it around 2005 immediately after TEOM when her music was everywhere, and it would have been the biggest skin care line ever. At that time, her videos were everywhere, and would have served as a great commercial for her products.

I do agree with you how the critics were always trying to get her in the 90s. One of the most respected critics in Norway was writing so much horrible things about her after the success of Music Box, that most media rejected her. It was almost hard to admit that I was a fan when I discussed music with people. I even got my cds wrapped as gifts when I bought them. I was afraid of the looks from the guys behind the counter.

On the other hand I really, really don't like Glitter, the movie. The album is one of her best releases since the beginning.

Do you think Mariah's movie career mirrors Madonna? Madonna found her acting niche with Evita. She kept at acting and finally received recognition for her portrayal of Eva Peron. So, what I am trying to say is that MC should have kept at acting more after the The Butler. However, I think it is too late now for MC to even come close to receiving the movies roles that Madonna has had in her career. Who knows? Maybe she will prove me wrong.

"From what I remember and I was there she was adored in the 1990's." Yes, she was loved and adored in the 90ies with Mariah mania in 95-96. I remember those days too. It all went down in 2001 with Glitter. I love the album, the movie is okay. As a fan I enjoy the movie (it was my first DVD in 2001, can you imagine lol), with the wonderful music. But the general public didn't want Mariah to be in a movie, they wanted Mariah the voice only. Mariah's acting wasn't bad, there are some really good scenes and some are not so good. But again, Mariah will always be seen as the songbird supreme, the acting is nothing people are waiting for. I also need new music from her, not a new role. I still enjoy Wise Girls and Tennessee. That was the best. The worst for my taste was the one in Zohan. I know, it should be funny.

I was also there in the 90s watching Mariah's career. Mariah was commercially successful in the 90s but not respected by the industry or by critics. It really all started when Nelson George referred to her as a "white girl trying to sing black" and also reverberated with the 1996 Grammys snub. I also remember Sandra Bernhardt directing some really racist statements at Mariah in the late 1990s (statements I won't repeat here because they are awful). It was never "cool" to like Mariah until very recently. I remember all of the thinly veiled homophobia that was directed at me during middle school and high school because I loved Mariah.

"The Bodyguard" has great songs on the soundtrack, but the film itself and the acting are not good at all. There was definitely a reason why the film had sat in development purgatory since the mid 1970s. It was originally intended for Diana Ross. I doubt that it would have been produced if Whitney hadn't been the huge star she was in the late 80s/early 90s. Whitney was good in "Waiting to Exhale", for sure, but that's as much due to Forest Whitaker's excellent job directing as it was due to Whitney's acting.

I believe "Glitter" could have done just as well as "The Bodyguard" if there hadn't been so much venom directed at Mariah in the late 1990s/early 2000s and if there hadn't been so many issues that Mariah had to deal with during the 1997-2001 period of her career.

Glitter was a great idea, it just didn't pan out that way in reality. Whether the songs were written for her or not, they were absolutely some of the best of Whitney's career. I love the [Glitter] album, some of Mariah's best vocal performances are on it, but as a whole it isn't as superior as The Bodyguard. That film was one of the biggest films and soundtracks of the 1990's. The public reaction to it and the music was and still is unparalleled. Kevin and Whitney had a great bond, he even spoke at her funeral.

And when was Mariah rejected in the 1990's? From what I remember and I was there she was adored in the 1990's, it was only when she began to act that things started falling apart for her, yes there was other contributing factors, but she pushed herself into a project that unfortunately was a none starter.

Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner had *zero* chemistry in "The Bodyguard", and the songs she recorded were all written by other people except for "Queen of the Night".

"Glitter" is a superior project in every respect. Mariah's approach to acting was more endearing and humble than Whitney's. The chemistry with Max Beesley, though he wasn't the first choice for the role, was better. Mariah poured her heart and soul into the songs she wrote for the soundtrack. The only reason why people retrospectively think of "The Bodyguard" as better is because the soundtrack and film were very commercially successful. The film itself received poor reviews and is just incredibly dull in comparison to "Glitter", which took more risks.

I'm willing to fight the battle for "Glitter" because the way people rejected it, for me, symbolizes the way that people rejected Mariah in the 1990s.

Yes, [I've] seen all those. Glitter is no way better than [The Bodyguard] I'm sorry. Tennessee and Wise Girls are better, but I still think Mariah is best off not acting, she's just not natural enough at it which is a shame, but you either have it or you don't. Jennifer Lopez and Whitney Houston are great actors. I enjoy their films, especially Maid In Manhattan and Waiting to Exhale. Whilst I enjoyed Wise Girls, and her acting wasn't bad, it's certainly not the best, she tries [too] hard, it doesn't come naturally with her.

I highly recommend that you watch "Wisegirls" and "Tennessee" in addition to "Precious" if you haven't. The roles that Mariah took in those movies are much more substantial and grittier than the parts in "Precious" and "The Butler", and they really allowed her acting talent to shine through. That song "Right to Dream" from "Tennessee" is just incredible.

I honestly think "Glitter" is worthy of reappraisal - I often wonder if substantial portions of the filmed scenes were cut out to get the PG-13 rating and to adjust for the fact that Tommy and J. Lo sabotaged the "Loverboy" single, which was an integral element of the movie's plot. They definitely had to add the new version of "Loverboy" in during post-production. To me, Mariah's almost "awkward" portrayal of Billie works well because it lends an honesty and authenticity to the insecurity Billie feels from being abandoned by her father and mother and how she feels as a mixed race person. You can tell that, like Mariah, Billie worries that the rug can be pulled out from under her at any moment.

She worked with a very non-mainstream director (Vondie Curtis-Hall), whose only other film credit at the time was "Gridlock'd" with Tupac Shakur and Tim Roth. She made very non-mainstream choices for which music from the 80s to focus on (R&B and club scene rather than pop). It seemed like all of the elements were there for something great and interesting. But the filming delays, the last minute pivot to the "Rainbow" album, the sabotage of the soundtrack, the delayed releases, Mariah's mental health struggles. It all felt so unfair to Mariah, and she just kept getting hit with poison darts left and right from basically 1998 to 2001. The reviews for "Glitter" were bad, but I think hardly anyone saw it (including critics). The film is definitely better than "The Bodyguard" in my opinion.

While there's a discussion about a movie, I want to share my thoughts on Mariah Carey's performance in "Precious". Yes, if it's a crime that I watched it just last month, then I am guilty. Although this may have been said years ago when it was released, I still feel it's worth mentioning.

I was completely surprised by how good Mariah was in her scenes. I had seen her cameo in "The Butler", but it was not long enough to showcase her acting skills. However, in "Precious", she was truly amazing. With little to no makeup and an unglamorous hairstyle and wardrobe, she absolutely nailed the look and the role of a social worker. In her second scene, where she provided counseling, she was exceptional. As a therapist myself, I can say she captured that character perfectly.

If Mariah really wants to break into movies, she could pursue more roles like that, which are quite different from her real-life persona. She clearly has the talent, she just needs more opportunities like this.

MC's problem right now is not having a solid team behind her and guiding her career. I feel she has been making a lot of business decisions on her own since she left Roc Nation. These bad business decisions have affected her voice, performances, and MC16's delayed release. I wish Babyface would save her career like he saved Toni Braxton's career with their album Love.

It is so sad that people get away with so much evil and the good souls like miss Stone, most often are the casualties of the such scenarios. This is what Muni Long addressed on the Breakfast Club last year, there's so many ways an artist or creator of music can get ripped off in the business, if you don't find all those loopholes. You have to know the way songwriting, publishing, royalties etc. Work and ensure no other person's name is documented where it should be yours - she even says once in a while revisit and recheck just to make sure. It's just so alarming the way that music industry is full of snakes. May Angie Stone rest now.

Yes, it so sad about her passing. I send prayers to her children and family. I am glad that I have my collection to listen to her music. What is really bizarre is that a few months before her death she exposed on Facebook Live that Universal Music had been receiving all of her royalties and mechanicals for all of the songs she has written. That is really sad knowing she has been in the music industry for over 40 years and she doesn't have the money to show for it.

The issue I have (108,307) by Matty from Vancouver Canada
I would [love] a new sit down, but agree not with Oprah. They are to close, and we don't get much new info because they shield [each other]. I wish Mariah had done the full media circuit when she released her [memoir]. I would love something unexpected like with Kaitlan Collins. She's the closest interviewer we have to Barbara Walters and she's a [millennial], so Mariah's music is obviously a part of her musical tapestry during her childhood through to young adult as it is with all [millennials]. I also like the idea because she's removed from the entertainment industry, unlike an Oprah, JHud, Whoopi, Andy Cohan, Anderson Cooper etc.

I want Mariah to address directly the following info: the passing of her [mom] and [sister] on the same day, what ever happened with all those [lawsuits] with Stella and that other assistant, [bi-polar] awareness and her approach to maintaining good mental health, does she have relationships with Nick Cannon's harem of women and all Roc & Roe's half siblings, does she see herself acting again, and a super simple question: what label are you on and what happened to the music.

I Wanna Dance With Somebody (108,304) by Jamie from UK
So I finally got round to watching the Whitney movie I Wanna Dance With Somebody. I really enjoyed it, but it made me feel sad at the way they portrayed her reflecting on loosing her voice. It got me thinking about Mariah and how she must feel. While they are both completely different circumstances, we know Mariah has her vices too. It must be really difficult to acknowledge you have lost your once powerful and distinctive voice. Whilst we don't fully know what's going on with Mariah, I can't help but think I want to sit down with her and get to the bottom of it all. She hasn't been herself for a while now, whether it be vocal decline or her mental state, something is off. She seems to have lost her personality, I can't quite put my finger on it, she's just seems different. I agree with her sitting down with someone to lay her cards on the table and then get the help she needs. She needs to know admitting things doesn't mean it's completely over. I think playing this façade of everything being ok is doing her more harm mentally. The problem as I've said before is firstly people around her approaching the subject and then secondly Mariah admitting to it. It must be really difficult for her, but I truly feel if she drops this diva persona, and portrays a classy approach to personality and craft, I think she would get more respect. She's done the diva, the hood persona, she's nothing more to prove, bring it back to basics and remind people of the great classy artist that she should be at this stage of her career.

I feel MC underestimates how well her ballads reasonate with the general public. I don't understand why she is so hesitant to release a WBT or DFAU type of ballad with Made For Me remix type of vocals. Yes, I am hungry for new music. I want MC back on the radio in 2025. I wish she wasn't such a perfectionist.
