Remastering Daydream (107,898) by Terna from Nigeria
Yeah I am well aware of the concept of the loud wars, and how it might be perceived as unnecessary for some records or distorting and "changing the feel" for others, but if done right, could really enhance the sound like with Rainbow's anniversary last year. Just an observation actually. It always puzzled me how "dim" so to speak "Daydream" sounds in comparison to "Butterfly" just 2 years later, although it also sits in a transitional era from analog to digital recordings which would explain that. ABMB, OSD and Fantasy on the "#1 to Infinity" record are remastered and I think and they sound great. Now the whole album remastered for Daydream 30th with full colored artwork and unreleased tracks would be epic and a satisfying collector's item. Idea.

This is my first time on the list. Lol. Happy New Year to everyone.

By the way, at the beginning of the season I didn't think that All I Want for Christmas Is You would perform so well this year.

Daydream (107,894) by Edward from USA
If remastering Daydream just means cranking up the volume on every track, I think they should leave it alone. For the past couple of decades, remastering hasn't really added much to '90s recordings. Most of the time, it just makes the albums louder without actually improving the sound. To me, remastering only makes sense if it really enhances the audio, fixing any distortions and bringing out details that couldn't be captured digitally with the technology available back then.

In my humble opinion, the lossless digital version of Daydream sounds perfect as it is, so there's no need to mess with it. For Daydream 30, I'd rather see them release some of the tracks that didn't make it onto the album. Based on the B-sides from that era and "One Night" from The Rarities, any unreleased songs from that time would be more than welcome.

Could this be reason why Never Forgot You sounds so much louder on the maxi cd single than the album version? I have always noticed that listening to the two versions.

Same. I am trying to hold my expectations in check for Daydream's 30th anniversary. It's hard, though. I get so excited at the thought of what MC may be hiding in the vault.

What you're hearing is an example of the loudness wars: essentially mastering engineers compress recordings to make them sound louder to compete with other poorly mastered (loud) records. This trend became mainstream thanks to Oasis and how their records sounded so much louder on the radio, and due to their popularity, everyone else started doing it. Daydream is an excellently recorded and mastered album, boasting a dynamic range of 13 which is one of the highest in her catalogue. It'd be a shame to lose all those beautifully subdued and quiet moments of the record against the crescendos and climaxes. But that's the way things seem to be going. Personally the CD sounds superb and doesn't need updating in my view. But who am I?

I played this record the other day on Spotify and couldn't help notice that it wasn't digitally re-mastered and thus has a significantly lower volume level (you actually have to have Spotify's volume normalization feature on loud to get it to a significant boost in sound level - most recordings from the mid 90's backwards actually) for today's standards than say "Butterfly" or even "Rainbow" which she did earlier on this year. I'm hoping that for its 30th anniversary, she finally does this next year, giving it a long needed update in sound while also reintroducing the album - I dare say is top 3 in her overall best albums, there's no denying this.
1. Butterfly
2. Daydream
3. Mariah Carey
4. The Emancipation of Mimi
5. Music Box

Thank you gents, yes all is well with me thanks. Wishing you all the best for the year ahead. If there's no new music from Mariah in 2025, here's hoping Daydream gets an anniversary release with my beautiful London tour date added as a bonus audio CD. I would probably die of happiness. It's still one of the best days of my life, always will be.

Hello all, a flying visit to say a belated Merry Christmas and an advanced Happy New Year to you all. The new super audio CD of Merry Christmas by Mobile Fidelity sounds fantastic. If you have a decent hifi set up and a good pair of headphones, it's worth investing in, as personally I think it is the best the album has ever sounded. There's so many nuances to unearth, I find with each listen I'm discovering more about an album I thought I knew inside out. I only wish the debut, Emotions, Music Box and Daydream would get the same treatment one day. Love to you all.

Jay-Z's number one records as featured artist:
"Heartbreaker" with Mariah
"Crazy in Love" with Beyoncé
"Umbrella" with Rihanna

Jay-Z's number one records as main artist:
"Empire State of Mind" with Alicia Keys

The Recording Academy undermined the value of Grammy awards when they decided to give more awards to Beyonce than Aretha Franklin.

Absolutely. I couldn't have said it any better Jamie. Mariah has so many number ones, broke so many records and made music history when she was only 23. Plus this now all-time modern Christmas song. With her unique music catalogue, she can do without more Grammys.

I really don't think Mariah is bothered about Grammys now. If you look at the true greats they only have a handful. Where as Jay-Z and Beyoncé have swallowed them all up and for what? The pair of them have hardly a true hit between them, Beyoncé only has about 4 number ones as a solo artist and I couldn't name one number one from Jay-Z yet they both have Grammys in the thirty's. To me that's just saturation and doesn't really mean anything. Where as Mariah had all her chart accolades which really speak the truth to me.

Crystal ball prediction (107,875) by Bobby A from United States
I think every morning news program played AIWFCIY in one of their segments during the last two weeks. Radio spins increased. It was playing in every department store. The tour was her biggest Christmas tour ever. The extra retail vinyl helped too. I believe something big is coming in 2025. It may not be MC16, but it will be something that will take the Lambs by surprise and snatch our pocketbooks and wallets. Lol.

Crystal ball prediction (107,874) by Stacey from USA
I just posted about this very thing. AIWFCIY is cemented as a classic along with Nat King Cole's version of The Christmas song or Bing Crosby singing White Christmas. You can't think of Christmas without those songs. Truly amazing and just another example of MC's talent to create an original holiday song that increases in popularity 30 years after its release. Enjoy the spoils year after year.

Last Christmas (107,873) by Stacey from USA
Numbers truly don't lie. What an amazing stat to look at. Thanks for sharing, Edward. It's never bothered me to see MC become a one trick item. Her career accomplishments will never be duplicated. Christmas is a holiday that comes around every year. Her success is celebrated every year. To see a song become more popular then when it was released 30 years ago is truly is what's cool. My 16 year old daughter doesn't care for MC. Not her kind of music. But yet, she loves AIWFCIY, and will sing to it every year. Who else comes close to that? No one.
