The Lopez lobotomy (60,813)
by Andrew from UK
| |
|
|
Just in a straight pub in London walking past a group of gays on the way back from the bar and heard "Mariah Carey". Naturally span around and asked about the concert. Non Mariah fans. Didn't go. They were laughing at Mariah because of the "J.Lo" post. Googled it and saw that it's a bunch of bollocks. I'm happy J.Lo responded as fast as she did but the "another artist" label has pissed me off and I'm usually nonplussed about these things. Bit Lopez is winding me up. I criticise all I like, I invested my life in the woman. But I'm irritated. Her name is Mariah Carey. I respect the rapid response. But her name is Mariah. She's not "another artist". Lopez, you're a dancer. If Adele, who has sold more records than you have used squares of toilet paper to wipe your [censored], can call her by name, you can, also. This assertion that they are on a par is beyond.

Belgium show (60,811)
by Will from England
| |
|
|
I don't blame Mariah at all for cancelling the show. If they can hit a small show in Paris, then a rich American woman, married to a white billionaire, with 8000 people in one area would be too much of a tempting target. I do feel sorry for the fans that traveled and spent a lot of money to get to the show, and maybe on a certain level, I do feel that announcing the cancellation of a show the day before, is a bit late. But I like to think that Mariah exhausted every possibility to make sure that the show could go ahead, until the last minute. And when the docu-series comes out, I'm almost certain that this will be a highlighted episode and we can see what went on.

Cancellation of Belgium show (60,810)
by Marissa from USA
| |
|
|
I support the cancellation of this show. I do feel bad for the Belgian fans but we have to weigh the pros and cons here. I don't think a concert is worth putting so many people's lives at risk for. Thousands of people and an American international superstar all tightly packed in one location would be the perfect target for an attack and for extremists to make a statement. I'd rather everyone be alive and safe then people get hurt or killed to prove a point of not being intimidated by the recent tragedies. Sometimes it's better to give in than to be dead right.

The bit you didn't understand is: "Did you see the article the other day when Mariah Carey called the lighting 'abusive'?" Adele has a pretty strong accent.

Hello again. Thanks a bunch. I know you're deemed the harshest critic here but I read what everyone says and think hearing a balanced view is always best. I've seen her twice before as well, including CB tour so if you say it was better then that is indeed high praise. I actually wanted to come up simply to have that pre-drink with the much reviled Andrew to be honest, but I'm from the Caribbean and only come to London when it's Wimbledon.

I still don't like Ariana. She can definitely sing and she has a couple of songs I enjoy. "The way", "Baby I" and "Just a little bit of your heart". But she seems [censored], [censored] and [censored]. And what is up with that ridiculous Halloween atttire she is wearing lately?

Why oh why are Stella's girls with Mariah on her tour? I saw a clip of Mariah arriving in London. And guess who was right behind her? You guessed it, Stella's older daughter. You can tell she loves the camera.

She slayed that night. "Against all odds" was phenomenal and probably the best performance of the song so far. Definitely better than in London. I'm going to need her to continue doing whatever she is doing that is making her voice sound good. Because she wasn't even sounding this good in Vegas. I noticed that Mariah sounds hoarse in Vegas.

Re: Ariana Grande genuinely loves Mariah (60,792) (60,804)
by Musti from UK

I liked Ariana when she first came out and really enjoyed her first album, even though practically every song on her debut can be traced back to some 90s song (mostly Mariah's). Then I heard her singing live. Her high chest belts sound like nasal shouting and I found that very annoying. On top of that there is the copycat singing everytime she covers someone else's song. I'm glad she's finally finding her own style and holding back on the shouting. I have no doubt her similarity to Mariah's style at the beginning was a deliberate marketing move. Clearly it backfired with most lambs. But since then she's really trying to distance her sound from Mariah's. For one thing, whistles are noticeably absent from her second album even though we all know she can go there. I think Mariah wishing her good luck was more an advice to find her own voice rather than shading her. I still like Ariana. The music industry needs more singers who can sing. To get back to your point, I agree with you that she probably fangirls everytime M releases new material. She's obviously a lamb at heart.

Thanks for posting your review. You made me laugh with your comments, specially the one about the dancers. It's interesting that without even going to the show I felt similar emotions and had very similar thoughts while watching each and every clip from the concert. I'm jealous. Wish Mariah comes to Spain again because it's been a while. The last concert she gave here was in Madrid in 2000. After that she came in 2001, 2002 and 2005 but just to do some promo. I think that this has been a mistake for her career since the lost opportunity of "There's Got To Be A Way", I mean that she should have visited and performed in Europe much more, because I feel she and her team focused too much in the US where she is like the queen in many aspects (number ones etc.) while here her success had been much more moderate. Still, she has achieved the status of someone legendary, that I hope she keeps forever with hard work and good music. By the way sorry for my English. I still have to improve a lot.

Mariah in Cardiff (60,802)
by Anthony Basco from Cardiff, Wales

|
|
So Monday night was my second time to see Mariah in the UK, the first being in Birmingham in 2003 (when I was 14, Lord save me) and also the night my opinion of her changed forever. If I thought it was impossible to love someone more, I was wrong. I was completely floored by this concert, and this almost new and improved Mariah. Not only did she look amazing and sound phenomenal, gone was the awkwardness and stiffness of previous performances, replaced with a woman who laughed freely and loudly, interacted with fans like old friends and simply entertained. Although the stage production was minimal, this only added to the experience, as there was nothing to distract from the woman wonder that is Mariah Carey. To those in the media who have said she has no stage presence, well, I can assure you this is quite false; it is electrifying to see one of the worlds last megastars of a bygone era so up close. Being in the second row, I was able to witness just how much was live, and believe me, that was the majority of the concert. If the voice ever left the building, it decided to come back to stay. The lows were staggering, the highs triumphant, and Mariah has, in my eyes and in my heart at least, fully cemented her legacy. Thank you Mariah for truly making dreams come true. I love you.

Hey, mate. I [censored] love Mariah [censored] Carey and I don't care if people don't think that my truth is the right one. I know it is. Twenty three years later and she still had me fan-girling out. It's so amazing to party with 15,000 people with the songs you can sing in reverse playing that loud. I kinda didn't wanna pick it apart because I seriously enjoyed myself. And it reminded me that watching something on YouTube highlights [censored] you just may not notice or even give a crap about when you're actually there. But since you asked nicely, sure. It really was one of the most enjoyable nights of my life that didn't involve sex. It was a bizarre start to the show with her lipping (almost) all of Fantasy remix. It was blatant and when most people had finished screaming because she was, you know, right there, it seemed a bit weird because, you know, nobody had heard her sing anything yet. Anyway, Emotions saved it because it was done really well and the whole arena was going electric wild. When I saw the setlist I wished she would do Make It Happen instead of Emotions as it has a wicked beat to dance to, and it's easier for her to sing, but Emotions was awesome and in re: the vocal, my friend and I looked at each other and beamed at the same time as if to say "this is gonna be good". We were dancing like crazies. And anyway, when she looked up to the cheap seats (that is one big mo-fo arena) and did her "I see you up there" it was Make It Happen enough for me. I instinctively shouted out loud "just for the nostalgia" and paused before laughing at myself, hating on myself a little bit. Always Be My Baby was absolutely banging and Heartbreaker was seriously, seriously fun. Little bit fed up of hearing the remix-into-original cut, though. It was cool to hear Loverboy and Mariah genuinely looked like she was having fun. For the most part the show was really well paced (twice as good as Rainbow and Charmbracelet). It does seem at times the music overpowered the head voice vocal and some of her banter. Her banter was actually funny - I can't remember what I was laughing at but it was genuine laughter. I had really good seats, level with the stage about a quarter of the way back and anyway the arena was designed for excellent sound everywhere so I guess the very slight sound issue was her technicians' fault. It really wasn't as bad as I'm probably making it out but she may wanna introduce the sound guy's face to her new rock. What I was really grateful for is that the volume of the pre-record vocal and volume of the live vocal matched. You'd have to be pretty expert to know when she was flipping between the two here. Yes, there was a lot of interspersed lipping and I still think for a hundred pound sterling a ticket people deserve totally live performances but I was buzzing too much to give a [censored]. Her voice was probably the best I've heard it in ages. Having the video of MJ was nice but seemed to me like a bit of a cop-out at the time in terms of singing the power part of I'll Be There. But When You Believe was something else. I got goosebumps and the tears were streaming down my face (Whitney reference there if you know I love the Lord - which I saw her sing live on tour, ironically sending tears down my face). Mariah kinda ruined Hero for me by practically mocking it - again - before singing it, calling it "schmaltzy" etc. It's universally loved so to be negative about it before singing it is ridiculous. I sometimes feel it's just a story to slip in the fact that she wrote it. And I don't known what the crap was going on with Touch My Body. A guy was taken on stage to sit on the chair, and he looked like he was going to either wet himself with excitement or shit himself with fear, it was brilliant. But unless I was busy dancing or drinking at the point (I had 'em lined up) where she lap-danced him, when I was looking she was stage right the whole time and the dancers were behind him doing weird dance moves. Still it made me laugh reminding me that Mariah is, at times, bat-shit craycray. And I think probably every gay guy and girl in the arena wanted to take the dancers home so no harm done. In terms of her look, I think everybody could do without the leotards, the black one looked like it was giving her a camel-toe lol genuinely. I hope this didn't come across like I'm being overly negative about the show, I didn't expect it to be perfect. Tweaking the sound and outfits, and a few song alterations and it might have been. But the highlight, I have to admit, was the sparkling "ensemble" she was flashing like a friggin' Christmas tree. It really made her look quite majestic. My friend and I were talking about it between songs. At one point, "She looks like a [censored] queen", said I, and then put my head in my hands, this time hating on myself rather a lot.

Will, Emotions was the best moment of the night for me. She absolutely floored me. She was having so much fun with that one. I recorded it on my phone and have been listening to it all day. My friends came out talking about When You Believe, My All and Against All Odds, but Emotions was my favourite. I wish I could go back, press replay and do the whole thing all over again. Enwar, she did sing a single line from Fourth Of July which almost brought me to tears as it's my favourite from Butterfly and she also said that she will do a concert of obscure songs one day just for the lambily. She has said that before. This time I hope she meant it. Wherever in the world she decides to do that, I'll be in the front row.

Fourth of July live (60,797)

I just read that Mariah sang some of Fourth Of July at the O2 concert. I just can't. I wish she would just do it. That may be my favorite song from my favorite album Butterfly. Now more than ever I wish she would do an Anti tour like Kylie did and just sing album tracks. I searched for it and found this which I can't stop repeating now.

Teens and 90ies music (60,795)
by Liz Archer from Sweden
| |

So, on YouTube there is a channel that tested a few teens if they recognised some songs and artists from the 90ites. When Mariah came with One Sweet Day, I was horrified. Some of them knew it was Mariah, but said they didn't listen to her. Some said they had no idea. One even referred to Ariana? I mean, is this why it has gone so badly for Mariah in selling albums/singles in 00s? How do you change that? Is it because Mariah sings ballads and that is not "hip"?

Yes as far as I remember, he did. But I just realized why his choices then are so different from his choices now. Since MC was on TV show regularly and it was not just any other show, it was one of America's biggest shows, I am more than sure fashion labels would send her loads of dresses to model on the show. So Wilfredo didn't even need to use his brain much. Plus if I remember correctly the AI team also had a say in how she was presented on the show. So yes, that explains the difference.

O2 (60,793)
by Will from England
| |
|

Last night was my very first Mariah concert. I'll admit, I was nervous, because of what we've seen her voice could be in the past when it's not at it's best, and even the recent stellar performances still had me a bit uneasy. Well, I was wrong. She exceeded all of my expectations, and then some. It was an absolute thrill to hear her sing all the songs that I love (including my first, "Without You") and she was funny, endearing and a true performer. I don't care if she lipped, I couldn't tell and I don't want to know when and where she did. She made me cry, she made me laugh, and she made me smile from beginning to end. A truly wonderful night that I won't forget ever. Please don't leave it another 13 years Mariah. I don't think you've lived until you hear "Emotions" live lol.

Ariana Grande genuinely loves Mariah (60,792)
by Malcolm from Asia
| |
|
|
Don't know if it was posted here before, but I just recently discovered it and I felt really bad for Ariana. I know I said some harsh things about her and I do still hope that the ridiculous things happened before are her management's fault. But now, I am starting to appreciate her because she is distancing her sound and image away from MC. Since 2011 she already tweeted MC and in 2012 she replied in her Christmas post by saying "You are the cutest. I love you forever." Lastly, in early 2013, she tweets "Touch My Body by Mariah is really my favorite song ever" and even replied to her followers that says not to forget the hilarious MV of TMB "I know that's why I love her so much" and another one that says she loves WBT and SIO "yep and Obsessed too, so good". After that, her single comes out, and it adds to the MC comparisons. The media started to ask her about Mariah non stop when it's unnecessary and lambs on social media started to attack her. I guess she's got hurt and worn out that reached to the point that she unfollows MC on Twitter and Instagram and I guess by her management's advice as well. I honestly believe that she really idolizes and loves Mariah to death, but sadly by these unfortunate events, she was forced to stop showing some love for her publicly. Who knows, maybe she downloaded Infinity and enjoyed it privately. I wish one day she will visit MC in her Vegas show or in her concerts to show that love again and for her to feel the same way too.

Adele is so lovely, no wonder why she has been so successful, down to earth, no gimmicks, just her personality, voice, and music.
