New bodysuit (60,692)
by Mimi L. from Empower Your Highlighter
| |
|
|
Not a fan of the new bodysuit Mariah debuted at her last show. It looks tacky and it basically looks like a bejeweled swimsuit that only a diva like Mariah would wear while swimming. Sharp contrast from the original bodysuit she was wearing for the first few shows which were classy and sexy. But I heard she was losing beads from that one so maybe she had to stop using it. But this one is just horrible, not flattering (she still looks good because well she is Mariah) and to top it off, that necklace has to go. I can't deal with this disaster.

Mariah in Birmingham (60,691)
by Kajal from UK- Birmingham
| |
|
|
So happy this morning I saw Mariah yesterday in Birmingham and she was awesome. I sat 5 rows away and she looked and sounded amazing. I am so honoured to see her perform she is just breath-taking. I found her more relaxed in this concert - no gimmicks or over the top ensembles jut a few dance moves but she kept real to her voice and she was so wonderful. I do hope one day she will go back to her honey brown hair and curls because she isn't ageing at all and I know she will look like her butterfly days. I think her next album needs to go back to her roots and work with people like Walter or those who compose melodies to showcase her voice as she still has it - maybe John Legend. It's not about taking a new direction but sticking to a formula that works because she can get more hits. She is not like the other artists Mariah is unique and nobody can surpass her talent and musicality. But if she just strips down to a piano and soft music instruments to make ballads like I Am Free, When I Saw You etc etc she will bring back the fire we know she still has in her. Plus people will start to see her growing in maturity and all she needs is a stage and a mic and she will be a sell-out. Just my opinion guys but I have followed this site for over ten years and go on it everyday and read all your comments and love you guys. Keep respecting each other as we do and support our lady. We love you MC.

Exactly. Thank you. I always wanted to say that before without sounding so antagonistic, I guess I was just looking for an opening. If we're really being honest, the critics weren't really being harsh on her back then when they dismissed her songwriting attempts. A lot of Mariah's earlier lyrics sounded straight out of a Hallmark card - ridden with trite platitudes and cliches (although that's also part of the reason why her hits were so relatable and succesful). Most of us equate those with being "deep", "introspective" or "brilliant". Of course there were several exceptions (MIH, AIWFCIY). It wasn't until Daydream that Mariah start to improve and adopt a more vivid, storytelling style with clever quips, sublime rhyming and wordplay here and there as well as the occasional brilliant choices of words you'd usually only read out of a lexicon. Today, even if sometimes Mariah's lyrics pander to a younger crowd, try too hard to be hip with embarassing results, or just try to cram too many words within a line, it's still way better than what she did over 20 years ago. That's why you rarely see critics complaining about the lyrical content of her newer material. What the critics loved back then (and still love), though, other than her voice, was her musicality. Genius just emanated from her. She was always a better composer than a lyricist. Even when she seems to be stuck in a rut sonically, there's just a special inexplicable way of how she puts songs together that can't be replicated by any artist.

Mariah the singer/songwriter (60,689)
by MimiLamb from Germany
| |
|
|
She was always seen as a great vocalist, people didn't think or believed she was a songwriter, something she had to fight for to get the recognition. I don't agree that her lyrics weren't always that great in the 90s. Beeing a fan for a long time is not a reason (been a fan since 1990 myself) in my opinion, more a matter of taste. I do think that after her divorce from Tommy her lyrics became deeper, more personal/meaningful.

I'm sorry to say this, but in the 90s Mariah was never considered a serious songwriter. Everyone always said that she was a great singer, but that she could be much bigger if her songs (and especially her lyrics) were better. And to be honest, her lyrics weren't always that great. I know what I'm talking about, I've been a fan since 1993 and I have this website since 1998.

Keep speaking for yourself. You've done it again. Around of applause for you. You played yourself lmao. Standing O baby. You can't even back yourself up. "Mariah was never considered a serious singer" is the most thoughtless, dull-witted, statement I've ever heard. Music critics have always been negative to music artists and will always have something to say (it's called doing their job) but for anyone who dares to say she was never considered as a serious singer is highly moronic. No one should utter those words. Ever. It's blasphemous. You clearly think you know too much but you don't. Think of better words next time dahling.

Lol what is she getting her glam done for? Like seriously are you going on tour? She even left with Mariah with her hair in pins like that. Lord with Mariah's close family members out of the picture (and trying to drag her), Nick only caring about the kids, all her old friend (JD, Randy, and the likes who were horrible managers but good friends) I wonder who will warn Mariah. Because clearly Mariah has no time to get on the internet and see what we write. It's Stella. Even James was seen yelling at Stella in a video. I hope when James and MC gets married, it'll bring a stop to this weird habit of Mariah living with 200 people in her house. It's just not healthy. There should always be a healthy distance between the professional and personal life.

Album title (60,685)
by Mimi L. from Empower Your Highlighter
| |
|
|
I am loving both "Phoenix" and "Songbird" and my little suggestion "Fire". But I think if Mariah is confident that she has a strong body of work, like "Butterfly" and "TEOM", she should definitely go for "Phoenix". It'll be perfect after the years she has been dragged through the mud. That name with a killer album cover and a strong body of work and please oh please right single choices is all we will need to get Mariah back to her throne. I think for singles she should put a few snippets on her website or instagram (insta might be too short though) and then ask the fans to choose the singles.

Toxic relationships (60,684)
by Mimi L. from Empower Your Highlighter

So Stella calling off Page Six has gotten her exactly where I thought it would get her. Page Six is now out in full force, digging up the skeletons in her closet. How much of it is true, we'll probably never know and I won't be surprised if some are exaggerated but I can't help but think that some of the things mentioned are right. I was wondering a while back where Michael Richardson (her tour manager and I think part of her security detail) went, and turns out he left. Same with her business manager and all. Then last time we got news that her stylist Wilfredo Rosado (who also designed her engagement ring) is holding up the production of the reality series and according to page six he is now quitting. What is surprising me the most is not only is everyone from Mariah's old camp out (which is not necessarily a bad thing) but also her publicist Chris Chambers is quitting and he just joined her team last year after the departure of Cindi. So now the only and only people around Mariah are Stella, her daughters, Stella's close friend/relative Zarina (who is a lawyer and book keeper) and Lianna (another one of Stella's people) and Kris Buckle. We are quick to give Stella credit, but we don't know how much of the new Mariah is Stella's doing. I am not saying she didn't do anything. The Vegas gig was already in place, Mariah's weight loss/gain is something MC does every now and then, the UK tour got very little promo and managed to sell well on Mariah's brand name alone and because she went there after so long. What makes me dislike Stella is that she is practically living with her kids at Mariah's house, the only people travelling with Mariah are Stella's inner circle, Stella pushed in her younger daughter in Mariah's movie, now I have a feeling she'll try to get a prominent role for her and her daughters in the reality show. Lastly what is this all about "When I leave, at 1.15am, her manager tells me that my whole life is going to change now Mariah has shed her light on me. Her fairy dust has been showered." How weird is this? She even got the magazine to call her "the glamorous manager". Jeez, Mariah I know you are smart, just keep your eyes open.

It was used to describe Mariah's use of the word "fervid" in Fourth of July. My interpretation was that the critic was trying to brush Mariah off as someone who was trying to sound smarter than she actually was, which we know is farther from the truth. The most classic, Mariah hating review is the one in Entertainment Weekly of "Heartbreaker". They literally gave the song an "F" rating because they accused Mariah of using the same sample used in Fantasy in Heartbreaker. Had the critic did their homework and read the credits, they would have noticed that Heartbreaker sampled "Attack Of The Name Game" and Fantasy sampled "Genius of Love".

New era / Stella (60,681)
by Giselle UrbanPoshBeauty from US of A

Am I the only one worried for Mariah when it comes to Stella? Because she doesn't know how to properly deal with reporters. Page Six has yet another article about Stella, it got me thinking about Mariah and her "team". Anyone notice her team around her is mostly Stella and her family? All her long time team whose been with her for years are all gone. Even her long time tour manager is gone. He was there at the start of Vegas but is gone now. I hear, if it's true her stylist is getting tired of it all. (On a side note, no lie I've been trying to get info to Stella to get rid of him for months now lol. Sorry WR, but you dress her like a aging old lady. Enough with the darn stockings and open toe shoes so bye bye ). If Page Six is true then her long term business manager is leaving and Stella has brought on her lawyer and manager. I really hope Mariah isn't letting this woman totally come aboard and run things and she's turning into Michael jackson. I do find it weird, she has Stella there with her whole complete family there too and they are part of her "reality" show. A show which a year before Stella, Mariah would have rolled her eyes at doing.

Thanks Giovanni. I like your proposal too, but I also think that Songbird would be a better album title and Songbird Supreme would be a better tour name. Kind of like how The Adventures Of Mimi was a proposed album title and instead of letting the idea die, they used it to name the tour.

She wasn't taken seriously by the Grammy's after she went public with her relationship with Tommy and their subsequent marriage. She was snubbed for both Pop Vocal Album of the Year for Daydream, Song and Record of the Year for One Sweet Day, and R&B Album of the Year for Butterfly. Lead The Way, which was the love theme of Glitter, should've been nominated for Best Original Song at the Oscars despite the negative reception the film recieved. However, she's always been taken seriously as a singer songwriter she proved herself album after album in the 90's.

Don't be mad at me because you tried to come for me and I schooled you. The public perception you speak of was Mariah in the 2000's. You obviously weren't around the 90's like I was. While you speak about second hand information, I grew up during that time. I could care less about a Grammy, the Grammy's or all the critics that have hated on Mariah, but everyone knows that all artists revere winning a Grammy because to them, it's the equivalent of winning an Olympic medal. I love how you swiped one of my sentences from my posts (Mariah Carey sold records because of her talent) in your sad, weak, and failed attempt at a clapback. You misunderstood my reflection on how the critics and industry hated on her in the 90's as my own personal opinion. So next time you try to sink your claws into someone because your basic comprehension level failed you into thinking they were dissing Mariah, read the post at least two more times... slowly. You are now the second student to attend my class, but I'm sure you won't be the last. Next time you will think twice before you question the teacher, because your predictable nursery rhyme children's book has just been read. Class dismissed.

Tour (60,677)

So upset and sad I can't go and see Mariah. I went to see her last time (and meet her) and it was a great experience. But this time I can't afford the travel or tickets, my current economical situation doesn't allow it. I hope she does this soon again when I am better prepared for it, although from that magazine article it seems she isn't planning a new tour anytime soon again.

Lmao nice try. You just made yourself look more stupid. Nobody puts faith in the Grammy's. We all know it's bullcrap and extremely political. Mariah is definitely considered as a serious singer by both the music industry (AMA, Soultrain, WMA, Billboard) and the public. You're just bringing up bleak moments from her career. Mariah Carey sold records because of her talent. Regardless what the critics say (which by the way is irrelevant). She can freaking sing. She is and will always be considered as a serious singer. Point dot dot. Just check her catalog darling. Next time don't dig yourself a bigger hole.

It's simple comprehension so I'm going to need you to re-read my post before you try to respond to me. Mariah herself has been quoted throughout her career that most people still don't know she writes her own material. And since you missed it, I was referring to the critics, and not my own opinion. Most people on this board got that. In regards to the public, they had a love/hate relationship with Mariah. All of the artists that would site her as an inspiration wouldn't come out until the end of the decade/turn of the century (with the exception of Beyonce who was with DC), not during the 90's. The only time there was real excitement from the general public and not the lambs about a Mariah project was the follow up to TEOM. Its first week sales prove that as Mariah has never been a big first week sales artist, all of her big albums sold over an extended period of time. Lets talk about the music industry next. Awards, really? Is that why she was robbed at the 96's Grammys when she was shut out of all six nominations? The record breaking, blaring from every radio, OSD, wasn't given record of the year or song of the year. No wonder she didn't return until 06 only to be used for promotion, awarded non televised Grammys, and was shut out again from Song of the year and Record of the year. When again, she had another record breaking song of the year. The reason for Mariah's success was the public recognition to her talent. Also, it was the voting public, not the industry that voted for Mariah to top MTV's Greatest Voice in Music.

The videos absolutely don't do her justice. I'm so excited for you, especially if this is your first time. I saw her Christmas show in December and in Vegas last month, and as many have mentioned this week as well, she sounded fantastic. Whatever was going on a couple years ago seems to be a thing of the past. Looking forward to hearing your view and hear which songs move you the most. Interestingly for me Hero did, and We Belong Together was something else. I don't think she'll ever stop singing those two.
