Charmbracelet (60,247) by Giovanni from USA
I love "Charmbracelet". My favs are "Through the rain", "The one", "I only wanted" and "My saving grace". "The one" should have been a single.

A small detail, but it's nice to see her wearing her charmbracelet again, especially with the love for IOW is getting on the board.

Re: (60,242) (60,245) by Licia from USA
I agree with Ardis (surprise. lol). I don't care about a hit song. Never have and I never will. Would it be great if she breaks another record or makes another number one ? It would be awesome, but if she puts out quality music I wouldn't care if she got another number one for the rest of her career. At this point I just want great music. MIAM shows that she is still capable of great music. Infinity does not showcase the talent that she has. Infinity was trash on top of trash and it should have went in the vault never to be heard. Me. I Am Infinity... The Song That Should Have Went to the Trash (lol). I also agree with Edward. Mariah has more control than we think.

What is the logic behind it? (60,244) by Marissa from USA
I really don't believe that Mariah goes into the studio trying to make a hit anymore. It almost seems like she makes trash singles just because she knows she can get away with it and still be considered a legend. Triumphant, Infinity, You're Mine, Why You Mad? Come on now. How can you listen to your own work like One Sweet Day or Emotions and turn on Infinity right after and believe that it is worthy of being in your catalog? I'm gonna need her to stop treating her new music like a practical joke because she wouldn't be laughing if someone passed her up and stole that 18 #1's talking point from her. Let's get serious.

Re: I just want her to go indendent (60,231) (60,243) by Travon..SweetSweetFantasy from USA
I don't understand that logic. She has lawyers, if not the best lawyers. She knows that her music is her breadwinner and she is smart to tie it into her contracts as collateral. Hence hence, why the labels have such a hard time dropping her contract at will. They would have to buy her out of her contract because Mariah is smart to not rely on her label to make deals.

Personally, I could care less about Mariah breaking records, being current, or having a new sound. All I want is for her to make music that comes from her heart and soul. If she is writing that way, then it will be real. Why should she try to fake some new sound, just to get another hit? I love her classic songs, that are heartfelt and real. If she stays true to herself, then I will be happy. I know that I am not the only one who feels this way. Peace and love to all.

Re: Uturn (60,232) new sound (60,237) (60,241) by darrian liu from taiwan
Preach. Mariah really shouldn't be afraid to experiment. She has the talent to put together genres that seem far away. Hell, she basically laid the blueprint for pop hits nowadays, she could definitely do it again. Throw in obscure, fresh underground producers, keep working that voice, and make an album full of surprises. I really want Mariah to dip into places she's never been to musically. I feel like she's playing it too safely after TEOM (although MIAM is great album). And let's be honest, all of us wants her to have more hits. Mariah, surprise us lambs.

Triumphant and TAOLG were flops but #Beautiful and You're Mine (Eternal) were hits. They charted in the 20s on Billboard's R&B charts. #Beautiful also peaked at #15 on the Hot 100 and went platinum. Album sales are down.

Re: The sound of music (60,234) (60,239) by B from USA
Infinity was Mariah having fun. It was cathartic for her to write those lyrics and the song received mostly positive reviews from critics and fans. It's the perfect closing number for her show. Besides I'm in the video.

Re: Some thoughts (60,235) (60,238) by Musti from UK
I agree Mimi. It could have been a much better song. Something she's best known for, a big ballad or a classic hip hop collab as you stated in your previous post. Infinity does have the Vegas feel but many other types of compositions could have had that grandeur you would expect from a Vegas stage song. I still like the song even though I haven't listened to it since last summer. It's forgettable other than the violin and the ooh aahs. Having said that I don't think any song she would've released at that stage would have been successful. At that point in time people weren't even sure if she could pull off a whole night of singing, following Rockefeller and the less than impressive start of The Elusive Chanteuse Show. With MIAM's low sales and quickly disappearing singles, she was the joke of town once again. All in all, everything done since MIAM seems to have worked in her favour. I have a feeling LA Reid simply wanted to indicate that, if her next album doesn't become a hit, she will be turned into a legacy artist from there onwards. Not that her next album will be a jazz album. Stakes are high for her project. I hope she comes back with a hit. She's still got it in her.

Re: Uturn (60,232) new sound (60,237) by this_is_qhm from the Philippines
Exactly. With MIAMTEC, Mariah tried to cater to every Mariah fan that she had and probably lost along the way, through the evolution of her sound throughout her career. It was sort of a reminder that she still is every woman that she has been can still bring it on hard with any facet. But that's just great for one album. If MIAMTEC was a reassurance, her next album should be her big step forward. Said it before, say it again. At this point, Mariah has literally nothing to lose and nothing left to prove - a perfect time for her to throw her formulae and her safety zone outta the window and start experimenting hard. Scrap them high profile producers who are running out of new tricks. Go for up-and-comers who still sound fresh. The more the better. I don't even care if it sounds scattershot, I'd rather have that than see her retread old paths again. But knowing Mariah, she'll always find a way to make it sound cohesive. Here's hoping for a new sound. Lovelife's great and quite risky, now it's time for the music to catch up.

M, I agree with everything you said, including what you feel about "Infinity" and how it reflected the place she was at around that time and Vegas. But think about, had she had to write something for Vegas, especially to accompany and conclude her iconic #1's don't you think it should have been a stronger song? Something the brand "Mariah Carey" is known for? Secondly before "Infinity", Mariah had a string of under performing singles (I am not judging the quality, just talking about chart performance), which has already kind of downgraded her chart potential. So then to think "Infinity" would make the desired impact (a hit song) after all the failed efforts, was honestly a little naive (if not stupid) and so now people like Wendy has an opinion stating "Mariah doesn't have 3 more #1's in her soul". Crazy. Then I have seen articles already with headlines of "Could Rihanna be the one to beat the Beatles record?" Like people now are not even counting Mariah that she is next in line, they straight up jumped to Rihanna. I hope you get what I mean. These are just my 2 cents.

The sound of music (60,234) by Edward from USA
The Emancipation Of Mimi brought a different Mariah to the game. A Mariah who cursed, a Mariah who was using fast phrasing, a Mariah who was uninhibited and sometimes unapologetic, she was fresh and in excellent shape, she was finally singing in full voice most of her songs again instead of whispering, and she used a retro sound that worked perfectly for the theme of the album. All those things and great music was what brought Mariah back to the spotlight. After TEOM most things stayed the same. Mariah has creative control of her music, so LA Reid is not to blame when something like "Infinity" comes about. Having complete creative control can both be a blessing and a curse. Mariah's popularity has declined and I completely understand that. I just don't understand how you come from Gems like "Butterfly", "My All", "I Only Wanted", "Looking In" to something like "Infinity" and its horrendous remix that thank God never saw the light of day. And it really makes me sad that "Infinity" is up there in the same album with the rest of her #1's. Now that her public image has been restored, she needs to bring good sing-along music, but if the sound stays the same, she'll be getting the same results. She took a huge risk with Butterfly. Many hated her departure from her Mary Poppins image, but it ended up paying off. She doesn't have to compromise her music, just mix it up a bit.

Miguel's Rogue Waves (60,233) by Jeff from United States
Yay. Miguel takes a hint from Mariah after working closely and extensively with her a couple years back. He basically created an album with her with all those remixes. Now his newly released Rogue Waves EP, all remixes of his brilliant song "Waves" reconstructing the songs to better heights, shows Mariah's influence in the game of remixes. My favorite: Waves (Tame Impala Remix). Imagine Mariah creating a psychedelic soul album next like soul singers in the 60s and 70s did? Teaming up with Miguel and Tame Impala to create a Rufus like concept album? Her rawer vocals now could take electric guitar riffs and the instrumentals could create more space for her to catch her breath and have stronger vocal moments instead of clinging onto her rap-breathy verses (which I personally love). Or she can leave her producers momentarily and work with indie producers and songwriters who admire what she does like Grimes or How To Dress Well. This way, she can avoid the EDM trend and garner more critical acclaim. We know how critics love to bash Mariah. Take a look at these interviews of Grimes and How to Dress Well showing Mariah love.

Re: Uturn (60,227) (60,232) by 123 from USA
See that is where I disagree. I don't think her last album sounded dated. I think that's why so many of the fans liked it, because she gave everyone a little bit of what they wanted. While we all agree that she definitely should try to venture into new sounds/genres for the next record, I don't want the quality of the music to suffer. The quality of the music wasn't the issue, it has been lack of promotion for those past 8 years once she decided to be a housewife. She definitely had lost her fire during that time so we agree there. Whatever she decides to give us I just hope it's of quality. But for something to take off, she is going to need a lot of promotion. Both from the label (ie Clear Channel deal) and herself showing up at every show doing live performances. She has to have a video and song ready to go at the same time and I'd prefer for the album to be done. So she can properly promote.

I just want her to go indendent (60,231) by Amber C from USA
She's too grown for these stupid labels and their policies, trying to make her a legacy act in Vegas and what not. Miss me with that. Just free yourself from the corporate shackles and business as usually, music industry slavery. I hope she didn't sign a contract in the beginning without reading it. .

Re: Re: Uturn (60,226) (60,227) (60,230) by Amber C from USA
You speak the truth. Eight years is correct. Good Lord the lambs have woken up. She stopped growing musically (not lyrically) at the turn in the century. She doesn't want to change, she want to do like Lil Kim and sound like a 90s novelty act. And sadly that's what many people think Mariah is; the 90s and We Belong Together. She messed up. She was meant to be the one whose name never dated. But she, and her poor advisors flipped up her booming career. The Emancipation was a way for LA to say, "Ok we'll let you above water just this once." I don't trust LA. I'm black myself and I can feel in the African American community a dislike (lack of a better) of Mariah and everything that she is about and achieved. Mariah knows this, yet she kisses up to her own people (black people) so that they will continue to accept her brand and legacy. But Mariah don't kiss up to anyone. Lol. This is how you ended up trusting no goods in the business. She's making herself look weak always going to people like LA and whomever for advice and what not. You wrote and constructed Vision Of Love on your own, and to this day, it's your most sacred song. Wake up Mariah.

Funny (60,229) by Travon..SweetSweetFantasy from USA
I find it funny how everyone here was just complaining for new music and Mariah gave it just for her fans. Mariah said herself her last album was for the fans. Then, people here were upset over everything Mariah because she failed to score a top ten hit. Then people here started comparing other artists to Mariah knowing it was useless and unnecessary. Then people here started throwing tantrums because they didn't get what they wanted from Mariah to help her legacy. Then people (lambs) were accused of being too nice. Then, the old fans from the heyday started calling Mariah's voice not the same bringing with it unnecessary commentary and useless discussions going nowhere. Then everyone started complaining about something related to Mariah. Now everyone is upset because they want new music to keep Mariah relevant. We all know how this turns out. Never satisfied, never happy, always complaining, and we call ourselves lambs. Ugh. I feel so bad for Mariah always needing to please everybody, even her own fans that honestly don't deserve any accommodation. I said this before and I will say again. Keep this up fellow lambs and we will start getting albums every 10 years instead of 3-4 years. I will find it funny and say I told you so. I hate speculation being told as facts and it's honestly a waste of time. Let's keep it classy, simple, and sweet. Let's talk about what's actually happening folks. Bitter Betty's who can't find other use of their time other than to complain about Mariah or nitpick details in a revolving circle over a period of time should not be welcomed here webmaster. Let's talk about this new album and upcoming single Mariah publicly said she's working on instead. Anyway, what music genres would you like Mariah to consider on this new album she is working on? I would love party songs, ballads, jazzy -retro songs, country hook, or EDM. That would be an awesome album.

Some thoughts (60,228) by Musti from UK
Infinity isn't her best song but I agree that it is catchy and has a positive vibe. It's the kind of message she needed to emote at the time (divorce and all) and, moreover, it was written for Vegas. I know, waste of a single but nevermind. I am confident that all this is simply image repair and a build-up to her next album. There's been a lot of criticism towards Stella on this board. I don't know her level of involvement in Mariah's projects but I think she's done a pretty good job in helping Mariah rebuild her reputation. Certainly better than Cindi and her lousy efforts prior to getting herself fired. As Mimi L has pointed out before Stella does not have much of a musical background, but she might not even be on board by the time Mariah releases her next album. Mariah does need someone with more experience and connections if she is ever to have a hit single/album again. All this talk of LA Reid turning Mariah into a legacy artist is making me very uncomfortable and I truly hope that is not his intention. MIAM was an introspective album (despite having a couple of songs with hit potential) and by no means should be taken as her creativity going dry. Meghan Trainor might be Epic's star (is she really one at all?) but neither her nor any other act on that label has Mariah's element of surprise. She knows the formula better than anyone else. She could easily become Epic's front runner. I think her next album will determine her future status on Epic. Make or break.

Re: Uturn (60,226) (60,227) by George Golden from UK
Well she has to be current to be revelant and score a hit song. It's not okay for us to say oh the album was great when evidently she is not experimenting with her music. So many wasted opportunities these past 8 years. It's like she is loosing her fire. No matter how great you think her album and singles are, if it's not current and fresh she will continue to loose listeners. She needs to break mold and come up with something explosive. After Butterfly, her sound changed and since then it has remained the same. If she releases a big uptempo song this minute with a fresh sound, do you think that radio will not eat it up? It's the material. Her name alone will not get her another hit.

Re: Uturn (60,211) (60,226) by 123 from USA
No offense George, but you are always saying her material is the problem (mainly her rap collabs). Most of us agree that Infinity was a horrible song. But you can't say that about MIAM. The album is full of gems, YDKWTD, Faded, Meteorite, MILG. There were several songs that had #1/top ten potential. The only drawback to that album musically was there was nothing new introduced. Although I would expect that from an album called MIAM, it was more of a retrospect of most of the genres she has covered throughout her career. Promotion was the issue with that album. Regardless of the latest accusations of sabotage (they were label mates for a brief moment on Def Jam), Infinity and the 1 To Infinity album got a good push from the label, and she actually stepped out and promoted the album and performed on several shows. Now that she has more label support and is willing to promote, she needs to bring out really good material. I don't really care for this Kiss Me by Olly Murs. Melodically it sounds just like Jealous from Nick Jonas. I'd rather she work disclosure for a uptempo pop record although pop is a little boring without mixing another genre with it like she has always done. Although, on the top of my wish list is a classic Mariah uptempo a la Dreamlover/ Fantasy/ Heartbreaker/ Loverboy/ #Beautiful.

I see helplessness in Mariah's eyes. She's almost given up. And we are here talking about the future when she releases songs like Infinity and reruns her greatest hits everywhere? [...] I the only one who thngs this is normal for a talent and young spirt like Mariah? Bye Bye was the last "it" song that gives you that Mariah feeling, [...] also had so much potential and the presumed single cover was so Mariah it was everything. Mariah needs to stop over thinking. Oh well she can do wat she wants.
