I always felt that Languishing was just some left over from Rainbow. But when I think that it's in the Memoirs album then probably she just made it sound like that on purpose as the album it's supposed to be like a diary. The music is lovely, I also wonder same as you why she doesn't write more big screen scores, she has a great imagination and creativity for music.

I don't think she is looking more glam now. She always looks super nice for events or going outs. Now that she is slimmer she seems to be showing her legs again, so she has been choosing a really nice range of dresses that are translucent and short, they look very nice. When she is very glam and wearing gala (night gowns) people tend to say she should go back to jeans or mini skirts. Everyone sounds so contradictory haha. She is looking amazing, that's all that can be said currently. She looks so, careless free type of happy. There's another pic where she is kissing Packer in a late date and the kiss looks so sincere. She is giving me E=MC2 vibes right now, the very flat hair, body coming back to ultimate shape, big shades, lots of sparkles and fresh kind of glam (not ala Elizabeth Taylor glam but more youthful). I have this incredible feeling that something big is coming, it's not going to be wind Mariah but hurricane Mariah.

Randy, I guess I didn't and still don't completely understand your question. You may not consider it soul music, but Adele does make black music. There isn't anything wrong with it, it's just what it is. If anything were to come of her success it would be similar artists will be released and promoted by labels in the future in hopes one will hit. Adele was a response to Amy Winehouse. Amy was the first big blue eye soul from the UK that obtained success and there several acts like Adele followed. After Amy's death, Adele was able to take the lead and reign in the success. Execs just mimic what's selling at the moment. Whose CD was dead? Every CD Mariah released for Def Jam had strong single choices that could have done really well. It was never her material that lacked on Def Jam. E=MC2 had wrong single choices, Memoirs (which I loved), and especially MIAM. Mariah also did very little promotion for each CD. Three things must be present for a successful project, great quality material, the right single choices, and promotion. So even if she came out with a project that was "fresh and new", it will suffer the same fate without any of the three things I mentioned.

Ikr, even with all the things she's done in her career I still somehow think that not the full potential of her musical gift is used just yet. I'd love to hear her do that.

Do you think Mariah or her team reads the message board? I remember someone suggested she should be more glamorous on instagram and I feel like she's doing it: the bikini picture, the jet set life she just posted, etc.

O2 fan meet (58,763)

Going to the O2 for the tour. Any UK fans up for a fan meet before the show in the Dome perhaps? Food and drinks? Essentially I'll book a table or tables for mcarchives.com UK fans and it might be a cool meet up (stone me after the show). An idea. Let me know. Once in a lifetime.

I just happened upon a piano version of Languishing and it strikes me that Mariah has moving harmonies/melodies within her. The Titanic soundtrack was built upon one melody. Why doesn't Mariah write melodies for film scores? Why doesn't she work with composers to create moving orchestrations and scores?

Adele vs Mariah (58,761)
by David F from Mexico
| |

|
British or foreing artists are always well received in the US, look at Rihanna, Spice Girls, Westlife, Dido, The Beatles, You Want, Justin, Celine, Adele. She dresses like an adult lady, she is doing a little of what Celine did, her style is very boring for everyday. Mariah has done everything, fun, sexy, sad, happy, dance, is a full concept artist. In a way I like that Adele is bringing real singers back on the spotlight, Mariah could result benefited from this situation. Adele sells talent, she is always covered and when you have the right song nothing can beat that. Mariah is full of gems she needs to polish them once in a while. A lot of milestones, I am sure she has something grandiose but she is waiting the right moment.

I don't think this is a race thing. I would hardly consider Adele's music R&B/Soul. I bought the album because I like emotional music. MC always gives us emotional music but I would like the hip hop turned down a bit. Here's the thing. Adele's success will mean something even if it doesn't change what MC chooses to put out because the CD was considered dead. And to have someone completely prove that wrong means execs are going to take a hard look at whatever is turned in to be released. I agree MC can't win for losing. She gave us an album without rappers and nobody bought it (Memoirs). Which by the way I loved.

Hello Randy. I am trying to understand your question as it's a little vague. What do you mean by what does it mean for the industry or Mariah? For me, it's an obvious sign to the industry that white artists have successfully taken over the charts using what is traditionally known as black music here in the States. Just look at this week's top ten and you will see what I mean. R&B is dead and unless you are a "of the moment" rapper, as a black artist, your music will not hit the top ten. You can't compare Adele to Mariah anyway. Adele is a white artist, making soul music, from the UK. Mariah came out 25 years ago making ballads, so she has already been there done that. She even wore a little black dress for the first two albums of her career like Adele did. Mariah has always implemented current day trends into some of her songs but eventually puts her own spin on it without anyone batting an eye. Do you believe that an album full of Mariah ballads would sell? Remember that Mariah's initial submission of MIAM during the Beautiful era release was ballad heavy and the label didn't like it and after the injury, she was inspired to change out three songs for Dedicated, Money, and Camouflage. They are both under Sony, but Adele is with the roster heavy Columbia and Mariah is with Epic-smart move. Other than MJ, Mariah is the biggest act on Epic. On Columbia, you have Adele, Beyonce, Barbra Streisand, Celine Dion etc. What I do believe is Mariah wanted to be on a label that would make her priority. They did let her put "Infinity" on the last album so I wouldn't be surprised if she finally got artistic freedom. As for the sound of her next album, I have to write separate post on that.

It wasn't easy but they've managed to put the children first in a way that is pretty rare for any parent. Her team has really come together in a positive way, Mariah has been shining in her Beacon shows and Christmas special and she has been investing in projects that mean something to her despite public opinion of her. At the end of the day, she's got to do what feels right to her. It isn't about people pleasing. A person can never be genuinely confident while wrapped up in pleasing others. It's about being in the best place she can be in. As a fan from literally day 1, I honestly don't care about the next #1. Would it be awesome? Absolutely. But, I just want to see Mariah relaxed and in a good place for herself. Everyone and their dog can make judgements about where she's at, but as long as she's happy within herself it will show up reflected in the quality of her work and everything else.

AIWFCIY (58,755)
by R&B Junkie from Poland

This is disgusting. Some of you'd wish that the label could discount the price or James' people would dowload the song dozens of times just to inflate it to top or #1 spot. People's number 1 obsession should be banned here. Don't you remember all the criticism when Loverboy was disocunted years ago and went to #2? That should've not happened and I hope will not happen in the future. AIWFCIY is a classic, and classic things do not need to be artificially lifted on charts. Speaking of future relases, I want to hear good quality track with great lyrics. I know she will not go for EDM, because she's stated she hated it, plus the fact these kind of music is frequently being overproduced, which is what critics and true music fans hate. My personal dream is to hear some jazz/blues-oriented album. Or gospel. Or funk. Or anything that has soul in it. Looking at her recent catalog I can see some signs she would do that and that would be fantastic: #Beautiful, TAOLG, CTTA, 100%, Almost Home, Cry, Languishing. Beautiful sounds with a throwback vibe, yet modern at the same time. Yey, I forgot about the "Christmas in N.Y." that she freestyled recently. I love it oh so much, go Mimi.

Mariah doesn't have to work with Calvin. She could work with an unknown up and coming producer. She needs a song that isn't playing like Your Girl.

Song of the decade (58,750)
by Blue Riding Hood from Outside

I know I might be called delusional, but I have this sweet feeling in the bottom of my stomach ( ) that Mariah will have another Song of the Decade. The candidates for this decade's top song are tragic and don't deserve the title at all. If One Sweet Day and We belong Together were to be succeeded by such an unworthy song, I would be very disappointed.

What does Adele's success mean for Mariah? (58,747)
by Randy from USA
| |
|

Now that Adele has managed to sell 7 million copies of her album in the US in just over 2 months which is unprecedented, what does that mean for the industry and for MC in particular? Now a lot of you would say "MC doesn't chase trends" but looking at some of her collaborators and new producer choices over the years you can prove that sometimes she jumps on what's hot. It's interesting that they are both under the Sony umbrella album, so do you think MC will be done with uptempos next album? Will hip hop and R&B take a backseat for songs more like Without You, My All, I Only Wanted, Languishing, Right To Dream, Cry, Camouflage etc? Do you think Adele's success won't matter and Sony executives won't care and let MC do whatever she wants?

AIWFCIY at #4 on Swedish singles chart (58,745)
by Baby from Dreamville...Where There's No Beginning & There is No End
| |
|
|
Basically matching it's highest position from 2013 with zero direct promotion. These things make a lamb happy. AIWFCIY is so big now that established artists, random celebrities and regular people promote it all on their own. It's everybody's song now. Mariah can go ahead and push Oh Santa now instead. And it's not a big deal that she didn't crack the top 10 on BB's Hot 100, yet. It's not like Christmas isn't an annual occurance (much like her Beacon shows) or anything. I predict All I Want For Christmas (Is You) will end up at #1 on many international singles charts whenever her Christmas themed feature film hits theatres. Actually, I think it might be Oh Santa's time to shine. Knowing Mariah, she's writing a festive new song to make it a triptych. I don't know, but I could be right. My 2ยข.

You know you are a legend if you: a) Are the latest current artist to wrote the last Christmas classic. b) Revisit the charts every year thanks to that. c) Do minimal promotion yet have such song peak at a spot shy of the top 10 twenty-one years after its original (unofficial) release. d) Make this happen (plays MIH) at an era where ageism is most definitely a thing. e) Have numerous massive achievements aside from this. f) Are (only) 45 years old. Boom. Happy New Year lambs.

This is awesome. Would have loved top ten but I'll take it. We must not complain about what she could have done to get a higher position. She did a good job promoting it with good performances and plenty of new projects attached to it. You never know what she might have in store for it next year. Hopefully, this will give her some confidence to create more great quality songs as there is still an interest in her music.
