The clothes (56,165)
by Andrew from UK
| |
|
|
Luke, Mariah is, of course, free to wear what she wants. However, like the musical direction (is there one? the "vomiting over the microphone" comment posted here was really funny) the ensemble direction is questionable. Many people want Mariah to be able to compete again, and be an artist they are proud to support once more. It's fair to say it's been a rocky road lately and silly to deny that Mariah hasn't been losing fans and respect at an accelerated rate. If people are getting emotional it's because they are perhaps frustrated. Another recent poster suggested a more mature sound to recapture the fans who grew up with her who have fallen away in recent years, instead of trying to be cool and down-with-the-kids. If many lifelong and long-term fans are admitting they've aged and changed etc. is it wrong to question why Mariah is not? Could argue both ways, I think. However, I would say that wearing classier, less-revealing outfits would further help reduce the mocking that Mariah faces on a daily basis. This is even more true if she continues to put on the pounds at this rate. Society will, for the most part, only forgive "hot" people when they wear such clothes. Why not go for a more mature sound, with a more mature look, a more mature attitude, more grounded behaviour: generally a return to the class that was there in bygone eras but updated? Is it necessarily age-discrimination or prejudice to ask for this? You could probably argue that it is. And Mariah can defy this at her leisure, such is free-will. But it's probably the only thing that will save her career and apeopley damage-control to her legacy.

Apollo performance 90 (56,164)

Does any lambs know when Mariah performed VOL and LTT at the Apollo? In the videos she seems to be in the same dress so it had to around the time LTT was released as a single. I'm thinking maybe August?

I felt the same Carlos reading that closing statement of the article. Never before has Mariah's influence and pioneering career been summed up so concisely and eloquently.

This article made me cry. Cry tears of joy. This last sentence: "Every time a singer reaches her whistle register over a soulful pop beat and adds a few gospel runs for good measure, or a cute, 'round-the-way girl collaborates with a "hard" rapper, you're listening to Mariah. Her influence is ever-present" is everything.

Mariah needs to take a step back (56,160)
by Mirage from Unicornatopia
| |
|
|
Mariah needs to take a step back and really think about where she wants to go as an artist. Infinity is poor, and the remix feels like Mariah, French and Justin just vomited different segments of rubbish on the mic. It is utter nonsense, and indeed makes zero sense. What Mariah needs to do is reflect on where she is going as an artist. She is now at a point where she can either continue to chase that number 1 single, and try to do what's hot, or she can concentrate on making more mature music, reflective of her age and the fans that grew up with her. If she does the former, she will look pathetic and try hard IMO, but if she does the latter, she may actually regain respect, as well as old fans. Mariah should stop chasing new fans and focus on regaining old fans. It would be a more astute strategy. Working with Diane Warren is a step in the right direction, but Mariah should seriously think in a more strategic way. Vegas is helping to rebuild her reputation, and is reminding people why her back catalogue is so great, but she needs to capitalise on that and think about her overall direction more. Making a cohesive album, that strikes a cord with fans that grew up with her will not only sell more, but it probably stands a better chance of getting a surprise hit single. If it doesn't, who cares, as I am sure the music would be great.

The vocals were decent but wasn't a showstopper like Beacon or the last days of Vegas. I can hear her voice drying out and more raspy than the July dates of Vegas. This really shows that Mariah needs to use her voice more regularly and really train her voice more seriously. There's not enough brightness in her belts and it could harm her voice. She needs to balance her mixed voice. It's a good show though.

RJJ12, I have been saying that they should just release songs from the vault for a while. I would love that and it would definitely keep me satisfied until she gets her new material ready. Instead of re-releasing Merry Christmas they should focus on that. If the purpose of re-releasing Merry Christmas is about making more money then I think they would make extra money if they just drop that unreleased material on iTunes today. I don't even need any of these songs to be added to the radio, just give me the music. Lol. I have never heard that Trey Lorenz song before that you mentioned. It's nice. I've only heard Someone To Love and Pisces by him. I guess I need to go and finally check out his whole album. Lol.

Puffy/Mariah collab (56,155)
by 123 from USA

Puffy just announced that he is returning to music and has recruited his Hit Men Production team, including Steve J. I would love Mariah to collaborate with Puffy, Steve J, and even Q-Tip and make another pop/R&B uptempo like Fantasy and Honey. I miss those types of uptempos.

New material / Slipping Away (56,154)
by 123 from USA
| |
|
|
With the last mediocre single and remix, I want Mariah to take her time making music and making sure that she crafts each song to perfection. The meticulousness of MIAM gave you a variety of genres and each song had its own unique vocal climax. I'd rather she release rare Sony material from the vaults to buy time while she works on a new record. Can you image if Slipping Away was released to radio right now? Off course all the r&b and hip hop stations will pick it up, but I believe it has a chance at Hot 100 success. It also doesn't sound dated and would fit perfectly playing on the radio at at the end of the summer. I also wouldn't mind her re-recording Head Over Heels and Last Chance with her own vocals. She could release an album of all her rare songs and re-sing those handful of songs she wrote for other artists like Trey Lorenz (Always In Love) and put it on a CD and call it Nostalgia.

First of all [censored], don't tell me to shut up. Second, I'm free to state my opinion. I've been polite plenty of times. There have been far meaner, disrespectful posts. You censor words that aren't even bad, lol. If you or anyone is okay with a 45 year old showing cleavage, more power to you. Patti Labelle has showed cleavage many times past the age of 50 and I've cringed. Mariah went to Isreal. I woulda thought she would have been more respectful and worn something more decent. That's all.

I'm guessing you would like to see her perform in a Burka? This is Mariah we're talking about, she is always going to show cleavage. I'm so sick of this "When you turn 40 you have to stop wearing what you want, show no skin and please anyone who doesn't like to see a woman over 40 show some flesh" attitude. I know it's cliché but age really is just a number. People should be allowed to wear whatever the hell they want regardless of what their age is. I think she looked amazing.

Re: Article: Mariah's Israel show not quite living up to the "fantasy" (56,149)

I totally agree. It's clear that the writer of that article was being overly critical and nit picky about Mariah's voice. I heard a few snippets and she sound solid to me and the audience seemed very engaged. Ever since Mariah's vocal troubles have been brought to the public, every one wants to be super critic now and write her off as not having her voice anymore when half of them wouldn't have really notice until it was pointed out.

Article: Mariah's Israel show not quite living up to the "fantasy" (56,147)
by Nick from USA

After watching videos from last nights concert this review is completely biased when talking about her vocals. With the part about the ensembles, i do agree, im so tired of seeing her wear the same BBMA dress but only in different colors, it is not flattering and it makes her look 20 pounds heaver. Other than that messy ensemble everything was close to perfect from what i have seen, and the audience was singing along to every word, so I don't know why he is making it out to seem like the audience didn't enjoy it either. Overall, this argument is biased and contains lies, she did a fabulous job last night.

I completely agree with you. This article was obviously biased from the beginning paragraph, with the author detailing personal reasons that created a mess of a night for him/her. Though it wasn't her greatest show vocally, she definitely delivered. And that's just based on the videos. The crowd was literally singing every word. Even to not as huge worldwide hits like It's Like That and Obsessed. Then when the anthems came along, like Without You and Hero and My All and Vision Of Love and We Belong Together and Always Be My Baby and I'll Be There, you could hear the entire crowd feeling it and singing along to every word and ad lib. Mariah was good last night. They should give her a break.

Isreal reviews (56,143)
by Leigh from USA

The reviews seem to be somewhat mixed, but as the day moves on there are many more positive than negative. YouTube has a number of the performances posted now. It does look like a slow start, but once her voice was warmed up sounds like MC ended up slaying the 12000+ crowd. When searching Israeli news also ran across this little article which may not directly be related to MC, but definitely indirectly would affect all of us. Take a look here.

"25 years of Mariah Carey" by Ebony (56,142)
by Malcolm from Asia
| |
|

Mariah Carey had really contributed to the music industry big time. I only wish Grammys have the respect for her and will name the "Best Rap/Sung Collaboration Award" after MC because she really deserve it. If MJ have "Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award" then she must have that because she has like obviously created that trend. I'm disappointed that because of this "diva persona" of her and wrong management choices, her musical talent and contributions are always forgotten and Mariah Carey's name often highlights as a woman who always wear gowns, having weight issues, "not singing as she used to" and diva behavior. I always imagined that if Mariah's career are handled like Michael Jackson's and Madonna's, she will be highly respected of most of the people, artists, media and will get the same amount of reputation and acknowledgement. I think she will be even dubbed and known globally as "Queen of R&B Mariah Carey" like MJ and Madge as "King & Queen of Pop".

by B from USA

Judging Mariah's entire show based on her vocals on Touch My Body, which isn't a difficult song to sing, makes no sense to me. If she was able to deliver on Vision Of Love and Hero, how wasn't the performance/concert a success? I can't take this type of argument seriously. I would also like to add that comparing Mariah's voice today to her voice twenty some odd years ago is like comparing apples to oranges.
