Did she change the bottom of that dress? Looks a little different from what I remember. I mean this in the best way but it looks a bit costume. She looks like a witch haha.

Petals (57,025)
by B from USA
| |
|
|
The Valentine line in Petals does not segue into the part about the little brother and little sister. I think she references Alison, Tommy, Tommy's children, and Ben and Walter (and other members of her entourage that sold stories about her to the tabloids). However after reading the lyrics which reference Butterfly and questions if she really loved him I can with certainty say Valentine is indeed Tommy. These are the lyrics that follow the Valentine lyric: "I really loved you (I guess I loved you). I tried so hard but you drove me away to preserve my sanity. And I found the strength to break away. Fly."

Max Beesley a.k.a. DJ Julian Dice is part of Luscious Lyon's prison crew on Empire. I love seeing them together in the same frame. Such a callback. I wonder if when Mariah comes on they would ever do that, put all of them (Billie, Julian and Walker) together in a scene. Shout out to Da Brat. Also Thirsty (and his discount aubergine suits) is my new favourite character for obvious reasons.

Mariah's vocals (57,023)
by B from USA

I would think her vocal prime would be considered Emotions. Her vocals are ethereal on that album and she reaches the stratosphere with her high notes. She also showcased her lower register which is criminally underrated.

Jussie Smolett's Jamaal's "We love everbody" was so Mariah-ish. You think it was an intentional nod to Mariah's upcoming guest starring role on the series. I really hope she plays an over the top, fictionalized version of herself. I also hope she's the thinnest she's ever been when she graces the small screen. Welcome to prime time, Mariah, for the first time. She needs to sing a song with Jussie.

Anayas Mariah dancing to Infinity (57,021)

I'm in love with this little girl and her lyrical dance interpretation of Infinity. Wow. Such passion and joy. Mariah inspires so many children to ferociously go after their dreams, whatever they may be, and I think that's her greatest legacy when all is said and done. No award will ever match how positive her true impact on the World has been and will continue to be. This is just another testament to that.

Actually most say her vocal peak is in Daydream, while lyrically it's Butterfly. Daydream's buttery vocals are legendary.

Happy birthday to one of the most amazing album in the world. Still can't understand how Mariah can follow up this masterpiece with another masterpiece with the span of 2 short years. All I know is that she can do that because she's Mariah fucking Carey. Happy 20th bday, Daydream.

Mariahisms (57,018)
by Mimi L. from Empower Your Highlighter
| |
|
|
I was watching the new episode of Empire and one of the main characters Jamaal (played by the uber talented Jussie Smolett) was doing an interview in that episode and the interviewer asked him a question and his reply was "We love everybody." Instantly made me think of Mariah and knowing how close Mariah is with Lee Daniels and Jussie also being on really good terms with Mariah, it might be a nod to Mariah. Mariah should seriously trademark some of the "Mariahisms" though haha, and also terms like "Imperfect Angel", "Elusive Chanteuse" and all those. I mean if Paris Hilton took out a trademark on "That's Hot" then heck why not Mariah, at least Mariah's ones are original.

Just hit send a little to fast, but what I meant to say was the Daydream album, my son being born and the OJ Simpson trial which were all happening 20 years ago. Just putting myself back for a minute. Congratulations Mariah on a wonderful masterpiece. I still repeat Melt Away.

Daydream (57,016)

Ok so I have enjoyed reading everyone's Daydream memories and I figured I have to share mine. I'm really aging myself here but it was a Tuesday October 3rd when the album was released and I was 19 and very pregnant. Back then you actually went into the record stores to purchase an album and look at all the liners and whatnot. Well, Mariah was always who I wished I looked like and Fantasy was killing the airways and the video was hot and she always looked amazing and here I was ready to pop and made my way into the mall to FYE and get the album. I'll never forget it, my son was literally born the next day and of course the one song that stood out for me and made me have that Mariah moment that she wrote a song for me was "When I Saw You" it was just so perfect for the moment. It's hard to believe my son will be 20 and of course Daydream. Between listening to MC's new album and the OJ trial to my son, I can't believe 20 years has passed.

Daydream (57,013)
by Todd from Melbourne, Australia

I remember Daydream, it was one of the first CD's I ever owned. I remember asking for it for Christmas. My dad didn't so much like his son asking for a MC album, and instead, got me History by Michael Jackson. So disappointed. Santa really gypped me. But the joke was on him. I saved up and bought it myself.

Ode to Daydream (57,012)
by Lee TS from USA
| |
|
|
Since we are all sharing Daydream stories I guess I will put in my little memory. Like Mariah says we never reveal a number dahling but I'm currently at my Rainbow age, the earlier part of that era if you catch my drift. So yeah, I remember as a young boy whenever the family would get together for family functions at my uncle's, I would always run to my older cousin's room to find Mariah's album and I would pop it into cd stereo and play it on a loop. All my other cousins would be playing video games and rough housing and I would be the only little boy listening to Mariah. I would follow all the lyrics and try my best to understand. I still remember thinking there were two singers in UTS because I didn't know or think she was capable of singing the breathy vocals in the beginning. I always thought it was a backup singer. I still remember being touched when she sang about sailing together and drifting apart in Open Arms, I thought it was so deep. I would always skip Looking In because the melody was so haunting that it scared me. Oh I felt the same way about Melt Away as I did UTS, I always thought it was a dude singing the first verse haha. I think Fantasy was my favorite because it was so fun and innocent. And the video was so festive, I thought she was so pretty and I was really into rollerblading back then. Daydream will always be my favorite because that was when I fell in love with her. But I think Butterfly was the first MC album I bought on my own, and I started with the cassette first. I still remember hearing her talk for the first time in the Butterfly interviews, I was so shocked and thought she sounded like a man. But the very first time I recall hearing Mariah was when a group of girls danced to Fantasy in the school auditorium. Anyway, Daydream is perfection I don't think she can ever recreate or capture that again.

Edward, I agree Daydream is Mariah's magnum opus. It's the perfect blend of her doing what she does best which is writing timeless Popish R&B songs. Mariah has written countless amazing songs and she wrote the majority of her lyrics during the first 9 years of her career with the exception of covers. Read the album liner notes. She's credited as the lyric writer of all of her best songs. She seems to do best when she does what she loves and what the label wants. Write catchy smartly written timeless songs. Doing so is an art form that Mariah is a master. She's the most successful female songwriter and producer and singer. Mariah is the queen.

Daydream was the first album I ever owned. The first CD single I ever bought was Fantasy. Daydream was Mariah mania. She was young and in her prime and she released one of the best albums of all time with countless classic songs and singles that spent 6 months at #1 on Billboards Hot 100 chart. One Sweet Day spent sixteen weeks at #1 on the same chart and was the Song of the Decade. It's amazing that exactly ten years later she released another amazing album that's second single We Belong Together spent fourteen weeks at number one and became the Song of the Decade that is only second to One Sweet Day. Mariah is a phoenix. She wil rise from the ashes like a bird of paradise looking stunning with an amazing song and video that reminds people who the hell she is the legendary stunning elusive Chanteuse who is ready to make another declaration of independence.

Daydream (57,008)

Happy 20th Daydream. It is a tremendous album and a real highlight in her career. I was almost 12 and had started secondary school. I was at the peak of my love for MC, and I remember being disappointed that I'd have to wait a week for my birthday before I could hear the album. The day of its release, I walked home from school to find that my lovely mum had got it for me as an early birthday present and it was taped to the porch door so I would see it as I headed down the path. I have never ran so fast in my life haha. I was ecstatic and overwhelmed to have it before my birthday. I played it non-stop for the rest of the year. Literally the only album and music I would listen to. It captivated me on first listen, and still does twenty years and thousands and thousands of spins later.

Deedre, you cracked me up with your line "I just feel like a constantly evolving version of me". You should definitely get in touch with Mariah's team. I would take your line over her "eternally 12" line anytime. Shit, I'm using it myself. I hope you didn't copyright it.
