Mariah: blackish the urban legend (55,011) by Lamb_O_Chop from Australia
Mariah has never tried to deny or hide being part black. From the very beginning of her career she has always broken down what she was. Proof here. Now I do believe that the record label (ie Tommy Mottola) wanted to market her as white (or racially ambiguous) to make her more "marketable" or more of a "novelty", which is probably why he didn't allow her to do interviews at the very beginning of her career. She kind of hinted at that in Glitter when the guy said "is she white, is she black, who cares she's exotic" (I'm paraphrasing). As far as not receiving the same amount of respect from the black community (as her black peers), I believe the urban legend of her "not wanting to tell people she was black" made only a small percentage of blacks write her off. For the most part she is respected and regarded by the black community as a whole. Randy if you don't think Mariah has ever brought a black audience to their feet watch her performance of VOL at the Apollo Theater. Mariah took that audience to church with her runs, belt, and whistle note.

Ain't none of my business, it's tea though (55,010) by MimiLamb from Germany
In all honesty it is none of our business who Mariah is with really. Who she is with, what she is wearing and how she is preparing (Vegas) is up to her, when she resumes Vegas we will know, one thing I do know is the lack of faith but also how fast people believe what the media writes (new marriage to Packer). When there is a reason to worry then we should worry instead of already making up worst case scenario's before anything happened, it is out of our control either way. I rather focus on my own life something I do have control over

Being "black enough" for more recognition (55,009) by Marissa from USA
Despite Mariah being part black, in the early years she wasn't marketed to black people. Her team tried to solidify her image as the racially ambiguous girl that appeals to everyone. Generally speaking, that doesn't fly with black people. If you are not marketed as an R&B or hip hop artist, you will not be a fan favorite. Her music had plenty of R&B influences but she was marketed as a pop star for years. I don't think you have to be a particular shade of brown for black people to support you. With the black community, it's about loyalty to "black" sounds (R&B, soul, hip-hip). I also agree that the fact that Mariah doesn't dance or have the Whitney-level stage presence put even more odds against her in terms of being a black fan favorite. Whether it's in church with the pastor stomping and shouting or a concert where the artist is kicking off their shoes, we like theatrics and that's not Mariah's speciality. I still love her despite it all though.

Vegas (55,008) by Mimi L. from Empower Your Highlighter
I am happy Mariah is getting her vacation and all but isn't her Vegas shows starting up in a week? When does she plan to rehearse? She left the last show on such a high note, I wouldn't want her to give an unsatisfactory performance for the first few shows.

Gorgeous (55,007) by Mimi L. from Empower Your Highlighter
So Mariah is finally giving us what we have been wanting (fashion wise). She looks gorgeous in the monokini picture. Very beach-ready/rich ocean babe (is that a thing?).

Marriage (55,006) by Leigh from USA
I would be seriously concerned if the media reports are all true. On the other hand it really is none of my business. When looking into who and what James Packer is and the behavior he has engaged in over the past couple of years, though, as a fan of MC, the reports do not portray him as the most consistent, stable man in the world, Australia or even Sydney for that matter. He seems to be easily persuaded when it comes to changing his religious beliefs. His true net worth has decreased by approximately 3 billion dollars in the past 4 years (holy cow, that's a lot of poor investment choices). His fellow countrymen and women are not very fond of what is seen as using his money to get what he wants. He inherited all of his money that was made by his father and grandfather in the media field and has moved almost completely away from those investments into those that are less stable (casinos and gambling establishments which account for huge losses when those investments have not panned out). And he was caught fighting in his neighborhood with the Nine Network's chief executive, David Gyngell, at Bondi beach for reasons that are reported as mixed. For someone who is reportedly very private, it is not difficult to find a lot of not so favorable information on Mr. Packer So yes I am definitely concerned about who this person is and how quickly this relationship may be moving.

JCS, Mariah in Israel (55,005) by Will from England
I don't think she had much choice in the matter lol. She has to cover up when out in public in Israel.

Blackness (55,004) by Lee TS from USA
Very toucy subject indeed. I think her label really marketed her as this very sweet white girl and very pop especially during Music Box era. I mean, if you just look at the Dreamlover video. And if you didn't know you would assume she's white because she passes for white. Whereas someone like Alicia Keys looks light skinned. And Mariah's complexion has always been very fair skinned if she doesn't fake and bake. Like Mariah says, she's human. If anything, she kind of neglected her Latin roots besides a few Spanish guitar strumming songs and dating Luis Miguel. I kid. Like she says again, she's comprised of many races and to identify with one negates the other. So what about Roc and Roe? Are they black or multiracial? Mariah will teach them the way.

Re: Mariah's "blackness" (55,003) by JCS from United States
Even with the one drop rule (if you have one drop of black in your blood, then you're black, for those outside the U.S. who didnt know) I believe Mariah has always identified more being biracial than being black. Early on in life she saw the difference between her parents and she just didn't belong in one group or another. Also, her white mother raised her so I imagine she can't just exclusively identify as a black child. We see more multi racial/biracial kids now but in the 70s it must have been a really confusing thing for a child to experience. Just going by physical looks, it's probably easier for BET to accept Rihanna as a black artist than Mariah.

Mariah in Israel (55,002) by JCS from United States
Let me just say how nice it is to see Mariah cover up her chest area in Israel. It actually suits her. I'm all for changing it up a little once in a while. I wish she would get a stylist that will get her to look sexy but classy. I think some of the mainstream fans were turned off because at times it seems like it's all about the breasts instead of all about the music.

Marriage (55,001) by Liz Archer from Sweden
Yes I worry. I am worried because it's very sudden (so it seems). I mean how long did she know Nick before they put on a wedding band? I am sure Nick is a nice person but that love affair did not last too long. And now just out from a divorce she is perhaps considering a new marriage. I don't like that he seems to be rushing and pushing her about marriage. If he loved her he shouldn't mind waiting for the right timing. I am also concerned because it doesn't seem that Mariah has been out dating. It's like she is settling for the first guy giving her attention. Of course I know nothing about her love life. It's just what it looks like.

Janet / BET Awards (55,000) by this_is_qhm from the Philippines
In all fairness, Janet deserves the award. She is an icon. I have no complaints with her receiving such distinction. Yes, she has only cracked the top 20 once in the last decade, but if Mariah isn't the one to get it, she's the only other one who's deserving. As long as Mariah is up next, though. Still, this is more acceptable than Rihanna receiving the first Icon Award from the AMAs, and much more fathomable than J.Lo winning the same inaugural award from BBMAs. At least Janet's influence is present in today's music. I can't say the same for the other two. Especially J.Lo who was only lucky enough to ride the Latin wave in the late 90s-early 00s.

Billionaire (54,999) by CHAZ from USA
Hi fellow Lambs. Am I the only one that's worried if Mariah and the billionaire marry, that Mariah won't give a flying hoot about her career because she'll be set? I wish she would be in that mind frame (like before she became known) that she has something to give to the world today with her incredible talent. Just saying.

To Randy in USA (54,998) by CMC from NY,NY
Hey I just saw your message, I'm almost positive that the message about Mariah not mentioning she was black is from "Mariah In conversation". It's a cd release from the early 90's not authorized by Sony. I have it in CD but it's currently on YouTube wich I discovered recently. She doesn't however deny it but I'm pretty sure she doesn't mention it. Which I thought was odd. Most likely the "powers that be" told her to do so.

Emancipation of Mimi (54,997) by Mimi L. from Empower Your Highlighter
I wanted to add something to the last part of my last post but I hit "submit" before that and the message went before I could change it. Anyways I was changing it to: TEOM wasn't a success just because of Reid, the songs were on point, Benny Medina got Mariah everywhere, the label financed a proper album roll out and the promos, Andre Leon Talley had Mariah looking like a billion dollar babe (which she is), Mariah got the best directors to shoot her music videos in sets of 2 each (Brett for "ILT-WBT", Jake Nava for "SIO-GYN" and Paul Hunter for "DFAU-SS") which lead to her having 6 gorgeous videos for 1 album, her remixes were on point (both urban and dance), ILT already caught public attention before getting released, Mariah sounding classy-matured-funny during interviews and Mariah being uber confident and owning the stage during her performances and her tour. So basically the stars aligned for Mariah to have her comeback, she is mistaken to think it's only Reid and that only he can save her.

Randy / BET (54,995) by Ms. Giselle from U.S.A
I get what you're saying and I agree with a lot of what you said. But my problem is, I feel in our community (black community), There's way too much of a divide and it's still based on Jim Crowe era color racism. A good majority of blacks don't accept Mariah as "black" because like you said she doesn't look like Halle, President Obama, Alicia Keys, Faith Evans (BTW looked like Mariah growing up before she dyed her hair). I can't help but still see posts after posts on black sites still alluding to this mystery interview she did where she claimed she wasn't "black" or how people are quick to write how she never claimed to her black side until ODB remix. My BF lust said that same line to me. Throughout the 90's on black shows they use to clown her about it like on an episode on Moesha. But, even with all that, I still feel like because she's a fair skinned black woman I feel like Mariah's had to always prove she's "black", I hate that. As far as her "singing" Randy, Mariah did plenty of that during her early career and I can post many up until now where she still does. Lets not forget those same people hated Whitney in the 80's because they thought she was "soul less" and out of rhythm. Go watch the Toul Train Awards or in Living Color. Oh and this part you wrote "I did find was MC in 1991 at the Soul Train Music Awards winning an award and thanking the black community for embracing her. She has separated herself by holding onto the label biracial. Racist America has never had a biracial pre Civil Rights Era'' is a contradiction, if we go by your logic which btw is again from the Jim Crowe era of racism the "one drop rule" and when Mariah said this on TV to Ms. Walters, I fell out my chair and wanted to die. I hate that she said that, as a biracial person myself, if she says "I'm black", how is she embracing all her races? What about her white side? She was raised by her white mother on Long Island and loved guidos. Saying she's biracial is correct, she's racially ambiguous that's why she's so gorgeous and why grown men grew up as little boys lusting after her lol. I just hate that she like most fell into the "European beauty" standard trap when she was younger. She was like no one you'd ever seen before. She still is beautiful but with European features now.

That interview your friend is talking about I finally got to see it a few years ago. What she said was I'm not black, I'm not white, I'm me. I don't understand why people only repeat half of what she said. A lot of black people hate her because of that one incomplete statement. I do agree with all that you said though.

Mariah without a label (54,992) by nikki from usa
MC's already well established and spent 25 years around labels, their distributors, and how they work. It wouldn't take much to find the right people to hire and consult with to bring out the best of the best that Mariah Carey has to offer. She's rich enough to put out her own music, but she doesn't need to because she's a major celebrity. She could use endorsements for promo money and even feature new music in them. She could contact top designers and agree to wear their brand new clothes to award and talk shows as free promo if they simply give them to her. I'd love for her to be the face of a charity and maybe skim some off the top of single sales for it. Mariah could contact Clear Channel and set up another 24 hour on the hour song test for radio like she did for Beautiful. We could get a concert special on TV with behind the scenes footage like back in the day. There are so many options open to her. Ahhh, a lamb can dream.

Mimi hit the nail on the head (54,991) by nikki from usa
Those are my sentiments exactly. I didn't want Mariah to go back to work for LA. I wish she would've gone out on her own and just used him for consultation. I've noticed the same people that want to blame Mariah for everything are the same people that thank someone else for her success when things go right. Dismissed. There's a reason why stars have managers, publicists, and stylists. Mariah's responsible for the music and even that is subjected to label approval. If Mariah refuses to promote like the EMC2 era (instead of not being promoted a la MIAM) than you can blame her. If the entire album is crap than you can blame her. Management, publicity, and ad promotion isn't her job. That's why she pays people. I think lately Mariah has been tempering what she wants to do with what the label wants her to do and coming up with so-so as a result. I'd love to hear what Mariah comes up with when she's not abiding by a label's version of what "Mariah Carey" is.

Nice, he finally got her to stop flashing her boobs. He seems to be classing her up like she use to be. Sexy Mariah with side boobs, and barely there bottoms was nice for the last 14 years but Classy M is warmly welcomed.

Is so boring. Who even watches that channel? They have absolutely nothing going on on it that it's surprising it's still on. Award shows are crap now a days. Nothing but lame, untalented people. That's why I'm so grateful for artists like Mariah. Still hoping for another great piece of work.

Lee / Mariah's blackness (54,986) by Randy from USA
This is just my opinion. I think the black community doesn't embrace MC because she has never really come out and said she's black. My best friend explained that she doesn't look like Halle Berry, Faith Evans or Barack Obama the other mixed celebrities who are considered black. My other close friend said she remembered MC saying early on in her career, during an interview, that she wasn't black. I searched and could never find such an interview, however what I did find was MC in 1991 at the Soul Train Music Awards winning an award and thanking the black community for embracing her. She has separated herself by holding onto the label biracial. Racist America has never had a biracial pre Civil Rights Era, everyone who had any black heritage was just that, black. MC should embrace all of her races. The final nail in the coffin, in my humble opinion, is while she has soul, Mariah's achilles heel is always going to be her live performances. If she "showed off" more like a Patti, Whitney, Chaka Khan, instead of standing still and singing the songs like the record and in some cases lip syncing the high full voice belts, she would have gotten a lot more respect from the black community as a vocalist because of the impromptu belting, scatting, riffs and runs that go along with singing live R&B and Gospel. I don't want to argue with anyone, this is my humble opinion. I answered a question and did not attack MC. It's sad that I have to end with a disclaimer to post here.
