I've spent the morning watching Mariah videos on YouTube. I started listening to acoustic versions of the songs from Memoirs and MIAM and hearing the songs stripped of the glossy production showcases Mariah's talent as a songwriter and highlights why some of her songs are difficult to sing, sometimes when she sings she sounds like she's harmonizing with herself. Does anyone know what's that called?

Well if she wants a comeback she can't be releasing [censored] material like "Infinity". I cringe every time I hear the song.

Hopefully, she didn't sign a long term deal. Reid's comments to Billboard are worrying. She doesn't need to do a standards album at this stage in her career. She needs to make another comeback.

I agree, Emotions is vocally breath taking. The whole album is so broad and the ballads so atmospheric. It is a beautiful, understated and underrated release and one of Mariah's best.

Press conference Israel (56,125)
by LC from USA

Mariah just did a press conference in Israel today and she discussed the political criticism and mentioned that she will be singing "I'll Be There" tomorrow. Also, in the article that follows, they mention that 12,000 tickets were available for the show and that they all sold out so they are waiting for the approval of 500 more tickets to be available. Congrats Mariah. Here's a small clip of it. Hopefully the full thing will be uploaded soon.

Record label contract (56,124)
by SM from Citizen of the World
| |
|
|
Does anyone know what her current contract is with her label? Like how many albums in however amount of time or if it was ever released? I feel Mariah is at a point now where she wants a lot of time to have with her kids and do shows every once in awhie and small projects, and we might not see a whole "album" in a long time. Or maybe I'm wrong. Idk I still wish #1 To Infinity had more than just one new song.

Oh no. I hope people don't think that those are my album ratings. Those were just how many songs I consider to be 10/10 on each album. There are many that are 9s and 8s for me but not perfect 10s lol. Whole album ratings would be much much higher than that.

Emotions (album and song) (56,122)
by B from USA

|
Emotions is a vocal showcase. Mariah's music is often referred to as soulless but I feel they overlook the soul she sings with because of how technically impressive her voice is. Her range is out of the world, twenty five years later.

Thoughts (56,121)
by B from USA
| |
|
|
Mariah seems to succeed when she strikes a balance between writing songs for herself (the type of music she wants to make) and songs the label wants her to make. Examples include Music Box, Daydream, Butterfly, and TEOM. She needs to find that balance again because her last two studio albums ignored label conventions by not having any really strong singles except Obsessed and #Beautiful. Does anyone understand what I'm trying to say?

That makes sense both the production of elasticity and stopping the alcohol. If only there was a way for her to get the same effects all the time without having to get pregnant haha and Baby, I love her more gospel songs even the Christmas ones. It is true her music impacts so many people around the world, she isn't given enough credit.

Pinoy kids singing Infinity in music class (56,116)
by Baby from Dreamville...Where There's No Beginning & There is No End

This reminds me of elementary school when the teacher had us listen to, translate and sing the lyrics of songs like MJ's Who Is It? for English class and so I just thought this was too cute to leave alone. "I was yours, internally, there's an end to Infinity. To Infinity-eee-eee-eee." When will your lesser faves?

Are you sure you're a fan? Because only two albums have a score higher than 6 and not a single album has a score higher than 8. My list would be: Mariah Carey - 10 Emotions - 9 Music Box - 10 Merry Christmas - 9 Daydream - 10 Butterfly - 9 Rainbow - 10 Glitter - 10 Charmbracelet - 9 TEOM - 9 E=MC2 - 10 Memoirs - 8 MCIIY - 9 MIAMTEC - 10

Haha oh Lord, we have all taken turns trying to convince Mariah (through this board of course) to keep them other "twins" under wraps. But I guess Mariah lives by the "wild boobies hang unbridled, or their spirit dies" motto. Personally, I think she looks much better with them boobies covered up. I mean it's fine once in a while to let them walk the red carpet or go shopping out in the open but not all the time. But then again she is Mariah (the queen) and I am me (mere peasant).

Never underestimate a mother's love and that goes both ways since Mariah and her mother Patricia would be singing together on an album as a first time at the same time she was carrying two miracle babies. Not to mention how Christmas is her Season D'ĂȘtre as well as an excuse to sing and write Gospel songs. Mariah was alone a lot during her pregnancy. I'm sure the reprieve from the constant barrage of strange germs and viruses also did her good. Plus her voice, writing talent and musicality is all a devine gift from God. If she was ever going to sound like an angel, Oh Come All Ye Faithful was it. She's anointed and her faith is that of a mustard seed. That's how come her music does so well in places like Japan, The Middle East or wherever because it transcends ingrained culture, language, politics and creed. That's the true mark of a great artist and singer-songwriter IMO. These things make me proud to be a lamb. God Bless.

Ok so before I read this article, I was like "Always be my baby" better be in the top 10 or else. Lol. And there it was at number 9 and the highlight? That smooth hair flip, I've watched so many times. Lol. It actually goes along with the rhythm of the song. Mariah has lovely hair.

Re: Matty - LP groupings (56,109)
by nikki from usa

Just talking about the first group, because I've never known MC to follow anyone's trend. But, I think you're overlooking how her debut encompassed the whole 80's and displayed Mariah's versatility as an artist. I think she was ahead of her time here, because she grouped rock music with rap. The debut - Featured everything that was at the top of the charts in the 80's. Dance, Pop, Big Voiced R&B, a "we are the world" type anthem, Rap, and Rock music. VOL and Vanishing added MC's own flavor. Music Box - Forced A/C music and imagery courtesy of Mottola due to the crazy money making Juggernaut that is I'll Be There. MC's Unplugged was only supposed to prove she could sing live and if well received they could make money by releasing an EP. Above and beyond expectations. The people demanded it on radio and had dj's playing it while blowing up MTV for more of her performance. Between the #1 hit single, EP, and live video Sony made millions without having to lift a finger. By contrast, Celine was only known for singing Beauty And The Beast at this time, her hit defining album wasn't released until November in '93. Rainbow - Again, Destiny's Child only had 1 album out that seemed far more tailored to MC's creation of hip-pop. Rainbow was a lot more hardcore in the hip hop influence and rap department. E=MC2 - I can't see any relation with this to Bey. I'll have to take your word on that one. Although, I find it Mariah's most snooze worthy album. It's like a retarded version of Charmbracelet - she's redoing something she's already done. I think the singing style and musicality of CB is brilliant (*Lullaby* The Roof pt. 2) while E=MC2 was an attempt to get on AC radio IMO.

Ben: Rainbow Charmbracelet (56,108)
by Matty from Vancouver Canada

This is what I love about posting on this kind of forum. We individually had almost a completely opposite reaction toward the Rainbow and Charmbracelet albums. The way you describe Charmbraclete would be how I describe Rainbow. I wonder how much our own personal memories and experience during that "Mariah era" effect our nostalgia for our respective album preferences. I would disagree with you, in that I don't believe Mariah started making music she personally loved until after Glitter. I don't think she had the freedom to create her artistic expression until she was done with Sony. She made beautiful and monumental music with Sony, but I don't think it was always what Mariah wanted to do musically. I think Butterfly and Charmbraclete [sic] are Mariah's two albums where she set out to only satisfy herself and no one else. Mariah didn't have time to focus on Rainbow because she wanted to get away from Sony a.s.a.p which is why she only spent 3/4 months recording it start to finish. However, "Rainbow era" is the most fun, chill, carefree Mariah I think we've seen. She was truly loving life as a Butterfly and was the image of pop-perfection. Plus, lest no forget, Bianca came to life (the original Sasha Fierce).

Re: Pregnant vocals (56,107)

I did a lot of research on that. I have a friend who sings professionally who also said her vocals were crazy amazing while she was pregnant. This turned out to be common place among female singers. When a woman is pregnant her body produces a lot more elasticity to allow her to grow and stretch. This occurs all over, not just her tummy. This creates a lot more elasticity in the vocal chords, possibly bringing back that sound not heard of since their 20's. Also, MC was bed-ridden in a high risk pregnancy which would have caused her to get a lot of sleep. Her insomnia has always been an issue where her vocals are concerned. Ask any professional singer what they sound like on 4 hours of sleep and they'll tell you it's problematic.
