Bet Awards (54,983)
by Lee from USA

I understand that we as black folks need our own awards shows. My gripe is that Mariah is not really that embraced by BET or any other black media outlets. How come that Whitney won a BET Honor and a Lifetime Achievement Awards, but Mimi just got a Bet Honor? How's that fair? They treat her like a mistress: loved in private, but ignored in public. It took Mariah 15 years to grace the cover of Essence whereas Mary J Blige was on the cover at least twice a year. The black media doesn't stick up for Mimi when she is in trouble as much as they do for MJ, Janet or Whitney. Two radio show hosts got suspended for poking fun at Whitney, but when it comes to Mimi being ridiculed, there's is no outrage, suspensions or terminations. Where's Al Sharpton? The NAACP? Jesse Jackson?

L.A. Reid (54,981)
by Mimi L. from Empower Your Highlighter

When Mariah releases another album, I hope she doesn't rely completely on Reid's opinions and direction. Reid is given a lot of credit for TEOM, and while it is true that he has a big role in its success, sometime Mariah gets too grateful and gives him all the credit. For single choices especially, she needs to be really careful. Reid isn't really great with single choices. Mariah shouldn't choose them either, they should get a group of young individuals to choose a song if they want a radio hit. Plus I hope the standards album thing is not a plan for the next album. I'd like to hear few more original MC recordings before she starts covering songs for full albums. Butterfly and E=MC2 were two big chances Mariah lost to get more hits. I think even Memoirs could have been bigger had Reid pushed the UOOMF remix and the Angels Cry remix and dropped his beef with JD and released the H.A.T.E.U. remix, which was an awesome one. Inseparable would also make a good single. Now someone or the other will jump up and teach me how we blame everyone but Mariah, so I'll just clear this out, yes Mariah is to blame to a big extent especially since she dropped promo on E=M2 and in many other things, but I am specifying Reid because Mariah believes Reid is her savior. TEOM wasn't a success just because of Reid, the songs were on point and all the stars aligned for Mariah to make her comeback.

I didn't take it personally. I just don't think Mariah or us need to worry about who wins what (with the exception of being inducted into the Songwriter Hall of Fame). I'm happy Janet is being embraced. I've always loved Janet. I still hope that one day that rumored collaboration between MC and Janet comes to fruition. I'm still upset that Sony/Columbia didn't give Butterfly, The Roof, and Breakdown commercial releases because of creative differences and Tommy's manipulations. I think we all agree that Reid really dropped the ball with E=MC2.

The spiritual advisor thingy wasn't that exciting lol, but it's better than all the negative stuff last year. Team MC is doing a good job at damage repair and building up MC's image back. Btw I just listened to E=MC2 and Butterfly and got a bit frustrated for all the potential that have been wasted. We all agreed Migrate should've been a huge hit but I think all the other released singles could've been hits as well but they're not released properly. Butterfly has at least 3 other hits in it that wasn't released due to the conflict. Ugh why should they put a leash on Butterfly? It could've been Mariah's third consecutive Diamond album but no, they just had to limit its success due to personal conflicts and creative differences.

I don't for one bit believe any lamb who says they don't care about Mariah's personal life atm. If you really didn't care then you wouldn't have cared a couple months ago or five years ago when you obviously did, because you never ceized to. Not to mention, you're a lamb so have several seats. However I'm annoyed by these "spiritual advisor" rumors. Absolute bs and they need to end now. This marriage baloney can wait until after Vegas, Mariah. But I thnk Mariah is in love with life right now.

B / BET Awards (54,974)
by Marissa from USA
| |
|
|
As a black woman, I'm offended that the BET Awards in particular is seen as "not important". This is a particularly hot button issue for me because the "ethnic" awards are always the first to be written off as irrelevant. Those awards are sometimes the only validation that black artists can get for their work. If they are lucky enough to get to the Grammy's they'll most likely be nominated for an award category that isn't even televised. The BET Awards, Soul Train Awards, etc. are the only places where we can get recognition without having to wonder if it's just because we're a token black person. Nor would you have people like Rihanna mindlessly being nominated for "soul" categories in other mainstream award shows just because she's black. It just bothers me that people seem to have the mentality that if millions of white people aren't tuning in, it doesn't matter. B, this isn't an attack on you, it just prompted me to vent on something that's been bothering me for a while. Nothing personal. If your main point was that after all that Mariah's done we don't need awards to validate Mariah's artistry anymore, then I agree. (Forgive the tangent.)

The BET Awards are not important. None of these awards really matter anymore. Even the Grammy Awards have lost their credibility by awarding artist with little or no talent and playing favorites.

She won the best smile award. Mariah has done more in the last 7 years than Janet and Whitney. She resurrected her acting career and built her (and Nick's) empire up. If that is not much, then I don't know what is. The woman put two platinum-selling singles without help from a label. You said that BET would not associate with her when things are going tough, but they had no problem giving Whitney hardware while she was abusing drugs.

The BET Awards was not established until 2001. During that time Mariah didn't really have anything going besides negative stuff (breakdown, Glitter flop, getting paid to leave a record company). She didn't even get nominated until 2005 when TEOM came out when she was back on top. She was nominated four times (I think) and won one award and they honored her in 2012. If you are saying that Janet didn't have anything going on since the Superbowl incident, I could say Mariah hasn't had much musically going on since her last number one in 2008, but she still got honored in 2012. I honestly think they only gave Janet that award because she has been missed. Kind of like a "welcome back to the music industry we didn't forget you" thing. Has nothing to do with darker skin. She as well as Mairah should have been honored a long time ago because both have done so much. Anyway these awards really don't hold as much value as they used to. In this day and age it's a popularity contest. It's no longer about great music.

Jet-setting around the world, basquing in Med seas on luxurious yachts, rumors from boyfriends to marriage. It all is irrelevant for Mariah the artist unless her recent interviews about the direction she is heading were a bunch of bs. And if they weren't, and JP has simply swept her off her feet to the point that her artistry doesn't matter anymore, so be it, as long as she is truly happy. I will be sadly disappointed if the latter is the case, especially since I am holding a ticket for the 7/8 show. And I really don't believe she will put her music on hold again. But if not, she must rehearse to avoid losing the media support recently gained or all of this work is for nothing.

BET Awards (54,963)
by Lee from USA

Guys, isn't it odd that Janet is getting an Ultimate Icon Award at the BET Awards, whereas our girl hasn't gotten anything at the Bet Awards? Janet haven't put a hit in nearly 15 years whereas Mimi put out more top 20 hits than her, Madge, Whitney, and Celine combined in the last 15 years. Hell, Mimi is the only black artist in history that ever scored more #1s than Elvis. The only time Janet has been relevant in this millennium is when her boob was exposed at the Super Bowl. This proves if Mimi's skin was darker, she would probably dominate the BET awards.

I actually agree with Alexis (I'm shocked too). I was wondering the same thing. When will she start rehearsals for the July shows? Don't they start back in a week? All this good press will go to waste if she sounds bad. The media is loving her right now, but they are just waiting for the opportunity to tear her apart.

Bad blood: a jewel who escaped (54,960)
by Baby from Dreamville...Where There's No Beginning & There is No End
| |
|
|
After Tommy Mottola was interviewed by Howard Stern on Jan 30th 2013, singer-songwriter Jewel made her second (?) appearance, February 5th 2013 and followed up on a previously less fleshed out comment she had made (about TM) at 20:00 continued at 27:00. HS: Then Danny Goldberg discovers you and a couple of people were bidding on you, right? Jewel: And Tommy Mottola. HS: TM too, why didn't you go with him? Jewel: (smiles) He struck me as slimy. HS: He did? Jewel: Yeah Robin: Tommy Mottola? Jewel: I could be wrong, I don't mean any insult to him. HS: You mean you had a meeting with him and you didn't vibe with him Jewel: I just didn't vibe with him and he struck me as kind of a slick guy. Interesting portrait of Jewel and what goes on behind the music. Jewel signed her first record deal in March of 1994 with Atlantic. That's right after Music Box. Mariah would've still been considered a blushing new bride and her husband, Tommy Mottola, the same man who at the time gave Jewel, then still a teenager, the creeps. She was living in her car without a penny to her name but had more lived just that little bit more to where she could spot a shark thirsty for blood. Two very different first impressions by Mariah and Jewel 7 years apart but also extremely similar last impressions by the same two girls. All credit goes to Jewel in this because for all of his salacious digging into his guests lives, Howard and Robin are often hypocritical cowards. My 2ยข.

Monroe and Monroc (54,959)
by Lee TS from USA
| |
|
|
I actually like Wendy's nickname for tough guy Rocky, it flows when she says it together with Monroe. I find it funny and I'm pretty sure she knows she is saying his name wrong. Have you ever heard her slaughter Clooney's wife Amal's name or Pussycat Doll Nicole? It's funny. I don't think Roc will ever go by his given name, very unique and celebrity baby. Now back to Packer I think I know how the marriage rumors got started. Forever the Mary Poppins, less than one hand woman, Mariah was a born again virgin and made Nick wait until marriage. So maybe Mariah is doing the same thing and not giving her goodies away until she gets the diamond of a lifetime. Lol who knows but it's fun reading all these ridiculous stories about the couple. Besides living it up I hope Mariah is consistently training and practicing to be in good voice for upcoming shows. Ok this is going to sound creepy but her eyebrows were once discussed so whatever, but I think Mariah has such pretty feminine hands. If you've ever seen clips of her working in the studio and it pans to her hands pushing buttons or writing on a notepad, her hands are so pretty. And I love it when she's wearing her butterfly ring. Ok, obsessed lots. Peace.

A tragic loss (54,958)
by Blue Riding Hood from Outside

It still makes me sad to know that Butterfly could not live up to it's full potential. Sony hindered the chance for it to become the supernova it was destined to be. Not releasing "The Roof", "Butterfly" and "Breakdown" as proper singles will always be a great loss to her discography.
