Standards (54,638)
by Bill from the UK
| |
|
|
Standards are old timeless songs which countless artists have covered over the years. They were usually written in the 1920s or 30s, but some newer songs have fallen into the category due to their popularity. Songs like Stormy Weather, Star Dust, Moonlight Serenade, Embraceable You etc. are considered standards. I think MC would do a good job because I love the track The Wind from the Emotions album, and that has a similar mellow, low key, jazzy vibe which most standards have.

"Meteorite" /"You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)" (54,637)
by Billy from Greece

I was just listening to Sylvester's "You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)" and it brought to mind "Meteorite" in terms of melodic sequences and chorus. Though "Meteorite" does not sample this particular song, it does feel like a homage of sorts.

Christmas time (54,636)

Well lambily they have done a much better job promoting Mariah in a positive light. Infinity is a wrap, no club mixes even Triumphant had resung mixes, late video, same video she has been doing for the last view years. Blah. In four months we have the annual Mariah Christmas music starts. Where the slow build to Christmas it will sound great to hear Mimi back on the radio.

Ardis logic / remix (54,634)

Thanks for posting that one, the best remix of Infinity I've heard so far. I expected some official remixes to be released, but now I don't see it happen anymore. Some already mentioned it before but I also want an album with unreleased tracks from the Sony years, maybe that should have been a better move than releasing #1 To Infinity. At least it would have been more interesting for the fans. I also would have liked a special anniversary edition of the debut album, Don't Play That Song should have been on it. I love Mariah's performance of that song.

I am sorry if the post offended you and it wasn't solely about Mariah's contribution. I meant how the today's lot has nothing on what the big 5 had. I can't write about the other 4 since I do not follow their careers so Mariah was an example. But oh well really the post wasn't meant to say they have no talent, I think Beyonce is a good singer and Nicki is a fairly good rapper, but they didn't make any contribution that they will be credited for 25 years from now. They may surpass the records but that's about all. And nope never said Mariah was God. She is just an immensely talented singer-songwriter who still manages to crack top 20 without creating controversies or with the help of collaborating with other hot artists. Whitney was a major addict, Janet had family issues big enough to be on reality TV, Madonna's controversies were huge, but their musical contributions are bigger than their controversies. In today's generation, the controversies are bigger than the music. I hope that explains where my post came from.

I disagree that these younger artists are "blowing Mariah's spot up" on any level. First of all, it's an unfair comparison. The only people Mariah should be compared to are the people in her age bracket. I don't know why when it comes to MC everyone thinks it's justified to compare her to people who are half her age. Also if these kids really were blowing up her spot, it's not that impressive that they could "outdo" her in a performance because when you're young everything is easier to accomplish compared to someone older. Will those same people at age 45 still be killing it on stage or even have the stamina to perform in spite of having bronchitis? These 20 year olds may have better bodies and may not have any vocal struggles but will they have the talent and stamina to be in this industry after 25 years? Mariah doesn't need to take notes from people whose careers are unlikely to make any impact in the long term, she just needs to be the best version of herself, which has always been enough for her to succeed.

Popularized (54,630)
by Lee TS from USA

In the same token Mariah popularized butterflies and rainbows, mental breakdowns, whistle squeals, lip syncing, and photoshop to the point of catfishing. That post was so shady, for real like hot cable TV. There was nothing nice about the current lot. Mariah is a goddess but she's not literally God and is far from perfect.

Bill / correction to my post (54,629)

Good points Bill. Correction to my post (54,620): When I said Mariah is an emotive interpretive singer, what I meant is that when she sings she makes you feel it, even when she didn't write the songs herself. Maybe that wasn't the proper terminology but it felt right.

MC and the current lot: contribution edition (54,627)
by Mimi L. from Empower Your Highlighter
| |
|
|
I was thinking about Mariah's contribution to the music industry or let's say things MC popularized/ re-introduced/ "mainstreamed". What comes to mind are "whistles", "melisma", "merging/ mainstreaming Hip Hop with Pop/R&B", creating a holiday staple. (I'm aware that the vocal techniques were there before MC but I'm saying she re-introduced/popularized them.) MC is also known as one of the greatest voices in the world and is an immensely talented songwriter who managed to create a signature sound of her own. (I don't follow other singers as seriously as M but I'm sure for Whitney and Celine, Madge and Janet, one can come up with things they pioneered/re-introduced.) Now let's come to today's music industry starlets. In 25 years, what can we say the current lot popularized/mainstreamed? 1) Beyonce: photoshopped thigh gaps, booty, bodysuits. (Don't get me wrong, she has a good voice but she didn't pioneer anything musically, all she has is borrowed from MC, Madonna and Janet.) 2) Ariana: Cat ear hair bands, bodysuits, high ponytail, failed attempt to be the next MC. (In a world where hitting whistle register is replacing MC.) 3) Miley: Twerking, foam finger violation. 4) Katy Perry: Bra squirting, colored wigs, colorful outfits. 5) Taylor: Boyfriend bashing, breaking YouTube views by forming girl squads. 6) Nicki Minaj: Big butt, loud outfits (to be fair, she re-introduced "Baby Got Back"). 7) Selena Gomez: On and off relationship with Bieber. 8) Iggy Azalea: ? I am lucky to have lived in a time where the big 5 or 4 for now (since Janet is still not back) are still making music. Because once they stop, there is nothing much left.

I loved your post about MIAM, very well put. I put on the album recently to listen to it in passing and with exception You Don't Know What to Do and Money I liked it this round. Sometimes being a long time listener can take away from the body of work as it is, seems we're all in a way reaching the original Mariah from 1990 or which ever era you prefer. Also lets forget that MC has been singing for 25 years. If that album had just come out by another artist that was Mariah-ish, meaning we never heard of the MC style what so ever, I bet it would have done well if not better. Think of is a re-introduction. Just a thought.

Shelly / the debut / hiatus (54,624)
by Bill from the UK
| |
|
|
Hi Shelly, that was a sweet note thank you. I've been spending my time listening to the debut and the remixes I have from that era in celebration of the anniversary. The debut album is just so elegant, I love it. I loved the track by track commentary that was posted on this site, great to see the album getting some attention. I'm still holding out for the Legacy Edition to be released, which was rumoured and on release schedules several years back. As for the proposed break, is MC able to take a break? She's never really had a prolonged hiatus before, and we were all going nuts when MIAM was pushed back and no new music was forthcoming. I think if she's happy to keep making music, and it's what she loves (R&B), then carry on regardless. I don't think teaming up with Bruno Mars et al is wise for Mariah as they operate in two different genres and it would be as calculated and conceited as the duet with Westlife here in the UK. (Sips tea.) But that's none of my business, as Kermit (and Mariah) say.

Thanks Randy. I haven't posted in awhile but every once in awhile I'll check the message board out. You know Randy if Mariah would humble herself and sit in the audience at these awards shows, she would see how these younger artists are blowing her spot up. That could be inspiring and motivating for her to step her game up when it comes to these live performances. A good manager would suggest that to her. Does Mariah even have a manager? Hey Stacey. Nice to see you up in this piece. How are the kiddos?

Andrew / RJJ12 (54,620)

Thanks for responding to my post Andrew and RJJ12. I was curious about those 3 because their positions are usually the most different from mine, and it makes me think about it from a different perspective. Thank you for the clip, I had seen it but had forgotten that she said that. L.A. Reid mentioned MC making a standards album, which I would love, but some people don't think it's a good idea. Here's why I like the idea: MC is an emotive and interpretive singer, which many singers of today are not, she will make us feel something. I also think MC would add a modern twist to the songs that would sound more like Amy Winehouse than Lady Gaga. LG's standards album did moderately well and she has a nasally voice, and although technically a good singer, she doesn't emote the way Mariah does. MC already dresses like a chanteuse. The part in the closet in the Infinity video looked awkward because she's dressed like a Barbie while bouncing and rapping. If she laid on a piano or stood in one place it would look normal if she was singing the standards. I've read that when you're stuck in a rut it's better to do anything over nothing. For example, people with writer's block should garden, or do something that is not their bliss. It helps them grow and get centered so that they remember what it is they do love. I would rather have another flop (although I wouldn't call MIAMTEC a flop, it debuted at #3 on the Billboard) than another dead period with no new music.

Some how I feel as though Mariah's aim was to make Me. I Am Mariah a recap of her last albums. If [...] look at the three different album covers for this album they are remisisicnet of other albums. Off the top of my head they are reminiscent of Emancipation, Charmbracelelet, and Music Box. Also that album was not like Mariah's earlier efforts. There was something very different about it. It is even more colorful than other albums and more mature. I feel like the next album by Mariah may be her best album ever [...]even though it's just us fans, we know that Mariah has not lost it, Mariah knows she will get those #1s. She knows she will top The Beatles. Atleast I know she will. She already did (the singles) they just weren't released. Lol. when I heard [...], I knew Mariah's reign wasn't over. [...] would have changed the course of contemporary music again. Mariah and Jermaine had something .

Not sure how to put this (54,611)
by nikki from usa

Whenever Mariah isn't trying to be "Mariah Carey" she comes up with incredible music. Her iTunes had ringtones that should've been songs: Whisper, Lillie's Blues, Time Of Your Life, etc. The Country music she made with Willie Nelson for Tennessee was fantastic. Glitter is a great party album of dance tunes. I was wondering how Mariah could do something like that - make new music without having to be "Mariah Carey" and not seem like she's trying too hard. Leave it to Mariah to have already performed the action. Music for a video game and commercial. If it turns out to be a winner and really fresh than that's the kind of music the kids will be expecting from her. That will give her free reign to expand musically. It's ingenious really. I'm wondering if Brett Ratner did the commerical and that's the "stunts" we heard about a couple months prior? Gives her an excuse to wear something sexy too. Honey meets the Renaissance era, that could be interesting. Bring it MC, bring it.
