Mariah Oscars (53,437)
by Lamb_O_Chop from Australia

That wasn't a "help me" look or " the look horror" IMO, it's was more of a "alright now heifer don't try to sing over my voice" look. Whitney was show boating at the Oscars, but I agree with those that don't feel like she slayed Mariah. They both did well, Mariah sounded good just nervous and Whitney sounded good, but I didn't think she sounded better than Mariah just more confident. Having more volume or power to your voice doesn't make you a better singer or mean you have a better voice IMO. Singing affectively is what makes you great in my eyes, and no one does it like MC to me. I know it's all subjective which is why Mariah Whitney and Celine are all considered the vocal trinity, each can do something the other can't with their voice or talent. They're all equally great. Your favorite of the three just depends on your preference in voices or singing styles.

Honestly, I don't actually know anything. But my gut is my secret weapon. I listen to it when it singles something out and from that I can sometimes intuit a lot even from just a word, inflection or a little look. If I concentrate a pattern invariably reveals itself. So that's my answer. If I really knew for sure? I wouldn't have posted anything at all. I'm very good at keeping schtum even if no one asks it of me. I guess we'll know soon enough if my intuition is a load of bollocks or not.

It's not even worth trying to defend Mariah and her image either because she's going to do and wear what makes her happy. The only person who can change her image is her and obviously she's ok with it. It's not worth the fight. I don't always agree with her choices, but she's an adult and I'm just here for the music.

I was the same way. We were 12. We were supposed to be psycho and emotional fans at 12. It used to kill me when people talked about her. Lol. Once I was able to work and I could buy my own music and make my own choices, I started caring less about what anyone said. This is what I like and I don't have to explain why I like it. I'm sure as crap not going to argue and try to defend any performance good or bad to anyone.

You are such a tease. Do you have some info that we don't? Because I am dying here. The first 13 are alternates/opposites for her studio albums, now what is this Olivia Pope/Scandal reference and what on earth will hit the DJs? Is any of her songs being used for Scandal? Or is there a remix? Or is she releasing that secret album? You know what? Just shoot me. I can't with this.

America loves building celebrities up and tearing them down. It's sad but true. However, America also loves a comeback. Mariah Carey's talent is undeniable and she thrives when she is the underdog. Never bet against her or count her out.

Vegas, Whitney and the Oscars (53,429)
by Ty from USA

While I love Mariah and appreciate the front row seats, the lambs were saying how ill-fitting Mariah's gowns were, she has a stomach and the pink dresses were horrid. This is Vegas and her costume designer should be stoned. The dress with Rita Ora (who is a lamb) should have been worn in the show. The Oscars. Are you crazy? Whitney tried to oversing Mariah, did you see Mariah's face at the bridge? It was of total horror. Whitney was crazy pure crazy and I love her for it. Mariah should have brought her A game but as usual she looks frighten on stage. At 45 Mariah should be a queen of stage but at this point, well let me say this, [...] was the highlight of the [...] show.

Whitney Houston (53,428)

Had a way more powerful voice than Mariah. She practically sang circles around anyone. She was the greatest female singer of all time (my opinion). Mariah can do more with her voice, but when you're looking at power and range, Whitney wins without a doubt. But by '95 drugs and smoking took its toll on her voice and it was ruined. Everything after she sounded either hoarse or dry. Their Oscar performance was meh to me. Whitney got the best of Mariah there but got the best by Mariah on "Oprah". To me that performance there was iconic and breathtaking. I disagree with anyone who thinks that Mariah gave medicore performances after '97.

I posted something similar last week about not needing to defend Mariah. I do understand where Randy is coming from. I was 12 when the debut album came out, and growing up I had family members constantly at me about why I was such a fan etc. I used to be super sensitive to people being critical because I heard it so much from friends and people in general. All I can say, is I had to learn and accept that I can't let my mood/outlook/happiness in life be dependent on anything outside of me, ie what others say/do how they react. I'm always at choice how anything effects me. I'm just not interested in defending Mariah or why I love her to anyone. They either like her or they don't. (And I personally choose not to spend my time on internet sites that clearly don't like her.) But that's just me. I also think comparing artists is rather futile. Everybody brings their own thing to the entertainment business, so I just don't see the point. I know some feel that it has to be competitive. But I just don't. To me comparing instruments is like comparing apples to oranges.

Mariah Carey's five most amazing TV performances (53,424)
by Ethan from United States
| |
|
|
I'm a bit surprised of the roller coaster media coverage that Mariah has been receiving. All these ups and downs. Haha. Here's the new Billboard's article. And I think they forgot her 2006 Grammy Awards performance. That was amazing. I mean she's had many other most amazing performances: 1992 Grammy Awards performance of If It's Over and 1991 MTV Video Music Awards of Emotions. Billboard should have made it the Top 10 list instead. Haha. It's just a wish.

Here is the deal on Mariah Carey right now (53,422)
by Travon..SweetSweetFantasy from USA
| |
|
|
Lets keep it 100% real for one moment. Mariah Carey's album is #50 on Amazon and #57 on UK iTunes thanks to Rita Ora publicity (picture with Mariah). We have proven time and time again that Mariah's main issue with maintaining success is her disconnect with young fans and the general public. When she and the record label is 100% commited to promote her projects, the general public buys her music. Now she needs to ace the BBMA tonight and show why Mariah is often imitated but never duplicated. She needs to give that serious aura sexy phoenix free no bars attached performance. It doesn't have to be perfect but good enough to stand out because, right now, the public only knows her as a diva who can't sing. That can easily change with a good performance. They will buy her album if she sounds well and this same public will 100% buy her new album because it contains all #1s that everyone knows. Mariah is known to be a lot in the public eyes but they know her best with her mainstream material (#1s) and will buy the new album regardless of press because of the value of her music. She has no competition this week. If her performances are ripe and the dresses are not too tight, she will be alright and wouldn't need to fight to stay relevant. Let the music speak for itself. It will speak loud and I predict with promotional pushes and good performances that Mariah Carey will have her 7th #1 album this week.

Are the dates for May and July the only dates Mariah is going to have at Caesars? Meaning is she not going to have any more dates after that? I could have sworn I read somewhere that she was going to be at Caesars for 2 years. Thanks.

Defending Mariah and her image (53,419)
by Shezz from Pk
| |
|
|
While we're on the topic of defending Mariah. I found myself in a similar situation the other day. Somebody who knows me better than anybody else sent me a link of the TMZ article on Mariah cancelling her show last minute with a message: "She has started." I immediately got defensive and said she's sick and can't sing. If Adele cancels a whole bunch of shows it's fine but if M cancels one you can't believe she might genuinely be sick? He said no. She must be having a diva moment and not feeling like singing. So to any non lamb, this image that the media has created of her is the truth. Partly may be her fault but a huge part of it is biased unnecessary ragging on her. He has become a bit of a listener of hers after years of hanging out with me but to people like him she's created this extremely unapproachable image of herself with all the glamourama and the way she has carried herself in interviews etc since the last few years. People like him is why she doesn't chart. They think she's irrelevant and full of herself and unless they are somehow won over she will chart in the 80s on Billboard while worthless stuff will crack the top 20 because the majority of the market that buys and requests are too young or turned off by her to do so for her. Times like these I feel the need to defend her, she may mess up live performances or have questionable wardrobe choices but she's not a difficult, too full of herself, arrogant person. I feel she can mend her image with the right PR.

Dress again / Kelly "fangirling" (53,417)

So I just remembered that she wore a dress very similar to the black one on Idol and she looked so gorgeous. It was red, the color I have been trying to get her to wear for so long. This is the video, with the dress I am talking about and look at Kelly being nervous of even looking at Mariah. Haha that would be so me.

The black dress she wore in the picture with Rita, wow. She should have worn that to the BBMAs. I know I said I'd like her to wear some other color but that dress is perfection, sexy and classy at the same time with a little bit of edge because of the material around her chest. It fits her perfectly and she looks really good in it. I hope she has some good outfits picked for tomorrow. Her appearance will be as important as her singing because she's going to be the focus tomorrow (with all the talk about the 15 minutes being dedicated to her).

Defending Mariah (53,414)
by Mimi L. from Empower Your Highlighter

I agree with Licia that we don't have to defend our choice of loving Mariah to anyone. I come from a country where many people don't even know Mariah. The very few that know her either don't like her (because what they read and also they think she is only about cheesy ballads) or are casual listeners. They don't realize that she has an extensive catalog touching on almost every genre of music possible and that her ballads are anything but cheesy. There are very few who actually like her and few of them are my recruits too haha. (I made them listen to her songs and only then did they realize that her voice is phenomenal.) Anyways I have never felt the need to justify my love and devotion towards Mariah. Same with MJ. I used to be bullied for being an MJ fan but not once did I pretend to not be a fan to please people. MC and MJ are the only artists I am this dedicated too and I don't care if others cringe at me when I say this. I am a lamb and I am proud. I will not give explanations to anyone who thinks less of these two legends. Yes Mariah had many bad live moments, but she is still much better on her worst day than most singers in their best days.

I'm so sorry about the show cancellation. I agree the situation could have been handled way better. While it's good they offered you all refunds, I think they should have just let as many of the people who bought tickets from that date into another show since they were not going to reschedule. To make them rebuy tickets for another date (which may or may not be sold out) was ridiculous. I hope you still somehow enjoyed your birthday.

I'm not going in to the Mariah/Whitney debate. At their very best both killed. My question is why do you feel that you have to defend Mariah? I've seen you say this more than once and it makes me cringe. I too have people around me who love to bash Mariah any chance they get. They can't wait to say something when she messes up. I could care less what they say. If they ask me why she sounded bad, my reply is "Ask Mariah." I've found that people who talk bad about her are going to say something bad regardless of if she did good or bad. You don't have to defend why you love her music and you surely are not required to defend her if she messes up. If it was bad, say it was bad and move on. If it was good and they still think it was bad, say you liked it, move on, and then blast your favorite Mc song loud (preferably while they are in the room with you). I get your frustration with her not so great performances. I just don't get why you feel you need to prove anything to the people around you.

Mariah vs Whitney (53,411)
by darrian liu from taiwan
| |
|
|
I asked my vocal coach about this and he gave me an essay lol, hope it'll help. (I copy pasted this.) Low notes: Mimi wins. Mimi has a more extensive support of her lower register, even down to the 2nd octave. Both have great lower registers, but Whitney's C3s aren't that good. Mimi can support her F2s but sometimes has larynx problems at C3s below. Belt: Tie. Mimi has more ease at notes higher than F#5 than Whitney because Mimi can place her voice in the head at higher notes, plus she's a light lyric coloratura soprano. Lyric voices have easier access to higher notes. Whitney is a spinto soprano, which has more vocal weight. Also, she can't place her voice in the head in higher notes, so she doesn't belt well above F#5/G5. But Whitney belts with more resonance than Mariah, although both can resonate well. Head voice and falsetto: Whitney wins. She has a more developed head voice, which is why her head voice sounds operatic. Mimi does give her a run for her money in this area tho. Both are well-rounded vocally, aside from the very few problems. The reason why Mimi can't give live performances constantly is her nodules. Nodules are evil to the vocal cords. She should've removed those nasty stuff.

Mariah vs Whitney (53,410)
by darrian liu from taiwan
| |
|
|
I asked my vocal coach about this thing and he gave me like an analysis on their vocal technique. Hope it'll help. (I just copied this from our chat lol.) Lower notes: Both are great, [...]. But Mariah takes the lead on this one, having a more extensive range in this area. Mariah can support notes in the second octave with ease and resonance. Whitney also has a good lower register, but Mariah edges her with her ease. Belt: It's a tie. Both mixes their voice very well, resulting in their great belts. However, Mariah has a bit more ease in the notes above F#5 since she's a light lyric coloratura soprano which has a lighter voice. Light lyric and full lyric voices can reach higher notes due to their lighter vocal weight. Whitney is a spinto soprano in her prime, which has more volume and weight to her voice. This results in her having to put in a bit more effort in higher notes. Plus, Whitney placed her voice in her mask all the way to her highest belt, which is the ideal placement in the lower to mid belts, but not for the upper belts. Mariah can place her voice in her head, resulting in more ease in the higher belts. However, Whitney balances Mariah in belting as she belts with more resonance than Mariah (both can resonate to great volumes, especially in their prime).
