I respect your thoughts, and understand that people just want to see her commercially successful, but I really do feel the song was intended for the Vegas compilation, much like ISB was to the original #1's album. I mean of course artists like to chart, I'm not suggesting they don't. I just don't think Mariah sits down to write going "Ok this is my next top 10 or number 1 record." And honestly? I think her next (hit) will come when least expected. I'm simply saying, Infinity not charting in the top 10 or 20 won't be the end of her career (lol). It is nice at this point for her to put out a song that demonstrates to the public that she can do the kind of ballad with long sweeping belting notes that "Classic Mariah" is known for. I think infinity accomplishes that. And it takes the focus away from the press in the last few years (if you aren't a fan who follows MC closely). Was it rushed? Probably. What with moving labels and signing on for residency? Maybe she could have put out a different type of single, but to me it's pointless to speculate, because this is what we've got. Her interviews have been fantastic, the residency has been positive for her. I don't know, one step at a time.

Great LA Times interview (53,318)
by Paul D from USA
| |
|
|
The LA Times interview was fantastic. Wasn't there a rumor last year that Mariah was going to feature a song with Beyonce as one of the singles for MIAM? If they worked together, and Beyonce ended up "borrowing" some concepts, it would lead me to believe that Beyonce is the artist Mariah is referring to as the "scandal". Keeping in mind that MIAM was years in the works (4 maybe?), it would make sense that someone like Beyonce borrowed her ideas.

I think Mariah's statement about some work she's still proud of is very telling. These interviews have all been telling. I want to know who the artist is that stole intellectual property from Mariah. Beyoncé?

Now that she has opened up about this stolen idea I want to know what idea it was and who stole it. By the way, I like Mariah's interviews a lot lately and I hope she will get well soon. Curious if she will be performing at the BBMA.

AIWFCIY worst vs. best / hiatus (53,315)
by Malcolm from Asia
| |
|

I just watched the AIWFCIY performance of MC in Beacon Theatre and it sounds fantastic. I wish someone leaked the mic-feed of it so that the public will know that Mariah still sounds good. It's very unfair and sad that the media is bringing her down or treat her as irrelevant, she must be treated as a legend by now. Many times I think of this thought: What if Mariah will take a 1-2 years break from media, performing, guesting, posting online etc. and focusing on her next album only secretly, no paparazzi. (Okay somehow, I'm referring what Janet Jackson does now haha.) Although it's hard for us not see any update from Mariah but I think it can help to bring back her charisma from the public once they notice she's gone. She can focus, be inspired, be fit (especially) and relax in many ways, and by that it can reflect to the music she will make and it will be better. And I'm imagining by the time she will be seen in public again, it will be hot if she debuts a short locks hair or a very straight black hair (for a big change and new take on her), her 90's eyebrows (the thick and natural one) I'm so sick on her brows lately, it's so very thin and light, and the "American Idol" body and aura plus very good and very young stylist. It will be fabulous, the public will see a new and exciting Mariah Carey like she used to before and that is a very much clean slate for her.

My apologies then. I don't really follow Beyonce's career or any other artist's for that matter, the way I follow Mariah and Michael. So ya I could be wrong. I could have sworn though that I thought Sasha Fierce didn't do welll, but I guess I mixed it up.

Marcus / Jono (53,313)
by Mimi L. from Empower Your Highlighter

Marcus, haha sorry I was trying out my mind reading device. Or you could say I pulled a Beyonce/JLo and stole your idea. Jono, although my post is just my theory, I think it actually is quite possibly what went down. Why JLo never even came to my mind was because that thing happened years ago, that story has been repeated way too many times. The 3 key words "title, concept and visuals" immediately made me think of only Beyonce. To think that this copied idea got Beyonce to where she is today makes me mad. Before that album, Beyonce was serving one flop/moderate song after another. Even "Run the world" which she tried turning into an anthem didn't crack top 20. So her surprise album got crazy sales thanks to it being a surprise because most of the songs in it are crap. Beyonce is known for "borrowing". Now I can't help but wonder how amazing it would have been if Mariah got to carry on with her plan. She can actually write a whole story through an album. Beyonce tried to make it a story but it was basically about her butt, her drinking watermelon (which thanks to urban dictionary, I found out is not the real fruit), telling the driver to roll up the window while she blows Jay-Z. And here we have songs of loss and pain, hope, love and songs with truly deep meanings and still get thrown out of the BB charts without being able to cross top 80.

Nah. Beyoncé did the same with B'day album, every song has a video. You can be right about the tittle and the surprise release though. "Whereas her previous ones were flops", only 4 flopped. I am Sasha Fierce. It was a hit.

Stolen concept (53,310)

It's sad this has happened. Like someone below said this explains the 4 year process last year. It's obvious Mariahs creativity is so deeply coveted since people are always fishing for her ideas. She is a true artist in an industry full of desperate and greedy fakes. Good on her for moving on, I wonder if she is planning to take action for it.

Hold on, you are probably on to something. I totally thought she was talking about JLo and how she continues to try and follow whatever Mariah does. But you pointed out what Beyonce did and that makes sense. As much as I love that woman, she isn't known for being the most original and often "borrows" from other artists. So that's a pretty shady move. It makes sense now how Mariah says it would be a huge scandal. To the media, Beyonce is the exalted queen second coming of Christ and can do absolutely no wrong, whereas Mariah is their favorite punching bag. If she had named Beyonce, the media would have a firestorm and it would be clear which side they would take. Now I'm really curious as to what Mariah's original plans for MIAM were, including all the visuals we could have had.

On another note (53,307)
by Mimi L. from Empower Your Highlighter

Criticisms aside, I will say that I am happy with the way Mariah's interviews are going. She is shedding some light into things that happened in the past few years and she is sounding very professional and composed. This is something I have been wanting for a long time. I am glad to see her showing the "fighter" side in her instead of dismissing things like she doesn't care. I smiled at the part she said she wanted to kill because SIO didn't reach #1. I felt the same. So people take note, MC still very much cares about more #1's. Don't pretend that she doesn't care. When you have all the wealth in the world, you want more. Same with when you have all the #1's, you want more. It's human nature. MC is pretty much spelling it out. She will fight until she gets a #1 or a hit and people with the whole "she doesn't care about more hits" should maybe see that and accept that.

You know, I will always hope you are right and I am always ready to be proven wrong by MC when I criticize her. But really I don't know how "Infinity" will bounce back. I thought that the BBMA performance will act as a re-release for "Infinity" but for that it needed to stay at least on the Hot 100 chart this week as well and also be in the iTunes top 40. It's quite a stretch to think it will still be a hit. I am more than happy to hear "I told you so, I got another hit" from Mariah but it doesn't seem like it'll happen. I know Missy Elliot's song shot to #1 on iTunes the moment she performed it at the Superbowl, but come on that's the Superbowl, this is not of the same level. With all the positivity surrounding MC, it's a shame that this single slipped through the cracks,

I am just upset because I thought that they would really put in a lot of effort to promote this single. I am with you on the whole "let's not pretend it's a buzz single or it was just meant for the Vegas residency", I am not a believer of that. I also mentioned it a few posts below. It has now become a habit that every time MC releases a single, they hype it up and then drop promotions or delay it or whatever and then it flops and gets dubbed as a buzz single. Case in point "Triumphant - the buzz single/single dedicated to Nick", "You're Mine - only for Valentine's day/tie over until album release/tie over until the real single", "TAOLG - only for the fans, not an official single". Give me a darn break, I can't with these. Nowadays even a crappy song can hit #1 or at least crack the top 20 with the right kind of promotions. Infinity is still better than most songs played now. I am not with the people who think that only MC's talent is enough to get her to #1. It is difficult as it is to get #1 and this isn't the 1990s. I have tried to be very positive this era, but with the fall of "Infinity" and people starting with the whole "this wasn't meant to burn up the charts, she'll kill with the new album" I am pissed now. MC is a major talent, but even MC needs good promo if she wants to do well.

No Shawty, it's Beyonce, reply to Will from England. (53,298)

I'm pretty sure she is talking about Beyonce and not JLo. JLo's cheat game happened years ago, Mariah has had a somewhat of a rebirth after that so we can say that incident happened in another lifetime. What makes me so sure this is about Beyonce is because she mentions "title, visuals and concept" was stolen. Title because Beyonce's new album was also self-titled. Visuals because she had a video for each song. Concept, well didn't Mariah say a while back that she had a secret album that no one knew about? Who was the only one to come up with a secret album around the time MC was supposed to release her work? She also said it would be a big scandal if she names the artist, and at this point so much has been written about JLo-MC feud that it wouldn't even make a story, on the other hand Beyonce gained superstar status after releasing her last album (whereas her previous ones were flops) and a MC-Beyonce feud would blow up the internet. The apprentice stealing from the mentor. Maybe this is why MC was not at the Tidal party.

Mimi L / Infinity (53,297)
by Marcus from Brazil
| |
|
|
Mimi L., are you really surprised by the falling of "Infinity" from BB Hot100? It's 928 on iTunes. It's definitely a slipper hit. It's slipping away. The song is simply not single material and people are not feeling it, as simple as that. No matter how much they hype it, if people don't like it, it's a wrap. Any of the extra tracks on the original #1's are better than "Infinity". And let's not pretend that because it is a flop now it was only intended to promote her Vegas residency and nothing else. It was a rushed bad choice. The only sad thing is that it is now just a filler on a #1's record. I'm mad because I think Mariah is capable of doing better than "Infinity".

Another outstanding interview with Mariah. She (finally) talks about the problems with IDJ and what happened with MOAIA, MCIIY and MIAM. It may not go into great detail, but it's better than nothing. Did Mariah just slam Beyonce and IDJ? I knew it that the content on MIAM was not what Mariah was working on for almost 4 years. She had a totally different idea and her "fan" just took it and got all the spotlight. Check out this interview. More surprises to come. Slay Mimi.
