Infinity (re-edit) (52,522)
by Skip from United States
| |
|
|
While I enjoy "Infinity" and appreciate her willingness to take chances, I felt the thing that was keeping me from getting into it the most was the song's structure. So I did a fan-made re-edit. You can listen to it here. Made with love. No disrespect to Mariah's immense artistry.

Infinity (52,521)
by Jon from Netherlands
| |
|

I liked it from the first listen and normally it takes me a while to like any song at all. Doesn't mean it will be a favorite for years to come but it got stuck in my head very easily. Lyric wise: some very good parts, some very questionable ones. Do I like the lyrics? On one hand "leave my heart on the mat for me" breaks my heart and works very well (as in "leave it for me to mend", a lot of us can relate and it's very powerful imagery), on the other hand I have no clue what she is talking about in the first verses and don't care to find out. She needs to reload? It also takes you from fritos to loans ("you still owe"). It's all over the place and undermines the possibility of a classic. Was it better lyric wise and with better production on the first verses so that you could understand what she is saying and it could be Mariah's "I will survive". The infinity part is also weak. Having said that I can emotionally connect to the song and find the second verses perfect ("ain't no being friends" and so on is on point). "You're leaving, you're out the door" is also very empowering. For those complaining Mariah needs to go back to her roots: this song is Mariah being herself. A song like "Hero" is exactly what Mariah is not. People just never caught up to that. I will continue to listen to the song cause overall it works for me and I'm enjoying it. PS: I love to see some die-hard fans criticize the song. People that think criticizing Mariah is heresy have no place in the grown up world.

Regardless (52,519)

Of what anyone thinks of Infinity I hope it does well on the charts. People are already counting her out. People are continuing to say "she's a flop", "she needs to give it up", "she hasn't had a hit in years" etc. I want this song to be the song that proves to the haters that Mariah Carey is here to stay and always has been. She's proved everyone wrong once I know she can do it again.

Honey in Infinity lyric video (52,518)
by Darryle from USA
| |
|
|
Everyone keeps speculating as to why Mariah used the Honey clip in the Infinity lyric video. Well I think she used it because that video or the feeling the video gives off represents where Mariah is in her life. The feeling of freedom. In 1997 with the release of Honey Mariah was finally able to dress how she wanted, sing the way she liked, make the music she listened to, and date who she wanted. Mariah was free. With Infinity and her divorce from Nick Mariah probably feels free and is loving her self more and more.

Here's an idea (52,517)
by OGmattyICE from US
| |
|
|
I'm not sure if this strategy has worked before but here's my pitch: I checked the return policy of most stores (Best Buy, Target, Wal-Mart) and you can return items for a full refund 15 days after purchase. May 18th is the release of #1 to Infinity. For chart purposes buy as many copies from those stores you can that sales week so it counts towards Infinity singles and album chart sales. Then once the official Billboard charts come out the next week you can return all the cd's for a full refund. I'm not sure the rules of this or if this has worked previously but It was an idea if it makes sense. Thoughts?

Follow up to my last post (52,516)
by Dove from USA
| |
|
|
In my last post I said the production was a little rough and the music sounded like it was drowning out her voice. I think it was sounding that way because I was playing it on a cheap Bluetooth speaker in my kitchen. It sounded way better in my car, on my son's good headphones, and at my friend's house. My friend has a better sound system than me. I asked her if she liked the song and she said it was hilarious. She said she loved that Mariah owned being a diva. Apparently, not everyone hates the diva act, some people like it. I regret my last post and wish I hadn't posted it. I truly love the song and believe it can be huge. I think I just didn't like being called a brown-noser so I was looking for flaws to prove I wasn't one. One can find flaws in anything if we look for them. Oh and I decided I do like the Russian duh/da. She could have Bianca sing that part in the video.

MC being aloof about "Infinity" meaning (52,515)
by Ardis Logic from Earth
| |
|
|
When asked about the meaning behind "Infinity" she said "I leave that open for the fans to interpret" (and we will/do). She goes on to say "We could take (all my songs) and dissect them and say, 'Who did she write this for?' And, 'What was that about?' But really, there's no way to say who or what was written about." (Sure there is, just tell us. It's something I have always wanted to know. Like who was "Honey" about or "ABMB"?) Maybe it's the binding legal fines keeping her from coming straight out and saying it. Or maybe it's just so obvious who it's about that she doesn't have to say it. I hope one day she will answer these questions. Also sorry for all my posts today (if it bothers anyone). I just have a lot to say today I guess. I'll be quite now for a while at least.

Infinity / Extra (52,514)
by Alex from United States
| |
|
|
The song is definitely a grower but that's what I love about Mariah's music. It takes a few times for the genius to sink in and then I'm in love. Mariah's Extra interview was A plus amazing. The bit at the end was classic. My only concern is why the radio push didn't coincide with the iTunes release or even before to build up the momentum. Seems like you'd want to capitalize for a strong first week of sales. I'm so happy Mariah has a great team but if someone could explain the thought process I'm curious.

The weight issue / MC needs a stylist? (52,513)
by Ardis Logic from Earth
| |
|
|
They asked Mariah about how she was getting in shape for her shows. She replied "I've been trying to get there. I'm a regular person. It is what it is." That's funny that she called herself a "regular person". I think she looks beautiful, and I love that she is loving/accepting herself. The only thing I would change is her choice of dresses. I really wish that she would let Stacey London be her stylist because she would truly make MC look amazing no matter what size she is. Personally I was not really feeling the nude dress she wore last night. IMO it just did not flatter her body very well. But I love you MC no matter what. You gonna do what you do.

Even though I try, I can't let go (52,512)
by Marissa from USA

My number one issue with the song is how awkward and strained the vocals are. It's a tragedy to hear how her voice has deteriorated from WBT to now. If it's to the point where they are piecing together what seems like 25 different takes to make a song, it really is bad. How the hell is she ever gonna sing a song like this live? It's team too much overall. A singer of MC's caliber putting out some s*** like this is and thinking that it compares to her other #1s is "corny like fritos". I understand that some of you want to be encouraging, but even if you enjoy this song anyone with an ear knows that it doesn't hold a candle to her other #1s.

Yeah I bet you are right. Even MC kinda seems a little disappointed when she said it. I get the feeling if it was up to her it would have been done. It could be a schedule conflict. Who knows. It's always something.

Interviews (52,508)
by Mimi L. from Empower Your Highlighter
| |
|
|
I have been seeing the interviews from Vegas that are popping up and I am happy with the way Mariah is presenting herself. She is calm, composed, answering questions properly and very articulate with her answers. No random ramblings, no going off topic, no ditzy diva moments. She sounds professional and in control. The voice being tired may be because she was probably stressed the night before about the release and then stayed up all night watching the world react to her creation and then prep and be ready for a major event in the evening, while simultaneously looking over the progress of her upcoming show. Anyways I love that she went something like "18 #1's not everyone has them" and kept a straight face instead of doing the usual move she does when she says something like that (which is tilt her head down, looking away and hiding her face with hair while running her fingers through her hair). She's owning up to her legendary status haha. Also this is better than her going "you know about the record, I can't say it but you know" and then getting upset when an interviewer doesn't know she is hinting at breaking Elvis's record. And can we just talk about how gorgeous she looked in the black dress and that awesome hair? I also liked how she responded to somethings head on. Like her vocal issue (where she keeps a straight face and invites people to sing in the shower with her), then about her body (where she says she is trying to get there) and also about the failure of MIAM (where she says that it's not a good idea to give an album to the label you are leaving because they don't have an incentive to support you and also that if the label doesn't back you up and the project is not promoted 100%, it won't do good).

Video (52,507)
by Mimi L. from Empower Your Highlighter
| |
|
|
I think chances of the video being released before the end of this week are low. I was hoping for it too, but MC said they just filmed initial parts of the video and that Ratner is in L.A. I don't know how long it takes to edit a music video but I don't want a rush job. I think it was better they released the lyric video first (even though it is quite a sloppy visual), because she sings fast and the lyric video is kind of prepping the listeners to sing along with the song and secondly the funny lyrics is what is making the song go semi-viral. So I think they wanted to focus on it. I do wonder why only clips from Honey was used in it. Hint? The parts of the video shown in Vegas had MC looking gorgeous but I do hope the talk about stunts are true and the whole video is not of her sitting on a chaise lounge.

After giving it a few spins, I am now happy to say that I love, yes love (not just like) the song. I also take back what I said about the ending, it goes on nice. I think maybe the vocals (that some are complaining about) were left that way to express raw emotions. Anyways I am loving the song, playing it on repeat. A little disheartened to hear that the video is not done yet, and that the song is falling down iTunes charts, but still happy and content. I hope MC goes all out with this single. B, what you said about the return of Agent M, I hope that happens. Honey has always been a favorite video of mine. Anyone else tried getting that swim scene on point? (Obviously not jumping from a 2 storey building.)

Video not done yet? Unorganized? (52,504)
by Ardis Logic from Earth
| |
|
|
Some of you have said that you are worried/upset that the video is not ready yet. I agree. It seems that the video being released at the same time would have been the best move to help the song move up the charts. Especially if it is quite entertaining like "Touch My Body" was. Why does it seem like things are always so unorganized with MC's last few releases? Oh well, it is what it is. I just hope we get the video as soon as possible. Before the end of the week would be great. Otherwise once it is finally released there will be a loss of interest.

Yes I also noticed her voice is a little scratchy. Hopefully these next few days MC can just relax and take it easy and rest her voice as much as possible. I wonder if she still uses the humidifiers to help her voice? I wonder what other things she does to help her voice if she does anything?

I think the fact that clips from the Honey video were used for the lyric video is a hint that the video for Infinity is going to be Honey part two. Maybe Agent M escaping a ruthless ex boss/thug. I just know that's what the video is about. Imagine how well the song would do if that was the accompanying video.

The existence of Infinity (52,500)
by Andrew from UK
| |
|
|
After several tries, ambivalence still. The beginning and ending are musical theatre and genius. However the R&B boring "you make me feel"-esque stuff is so out of date. And the voice does sound really arid, autotuned and chopped. But it's not the production that sucks, it's actuakly kinda theatrical and unique sounding. What sucks is the melody and lyrics and the need for Mariah to try to be clever in every song. Why can't a great, accessible pop song arise? Why does every song need about fifty melodies tacked on to each other? Maybe to hide the voice. It seems even big fans now aren't hearing what they used to hear. And everyone is cringing at lyrics including "Fritos". And the morality of the song: dissing your so-called baby-daddy? One disastrous decision after another, indulging a singer who is too aloof and arrogant to question why all record labels eventually get pissed off. Yet I don't hate it. I don't. It's confusing me. But I don't like it. It think, maybe, it just exists. [Webmaster: We were al wondering, what took you so long before you write another negative message?]

Infinity (52,499)
by B from USA

Was played on my local radio station and in two days the lyric video already has over a million views. I think it's going to chart on the Billboard Hot 100 next week in the Top 10 from sales, views, and streams. I really think this single has the potential to become her 19th #1. I think it's weird that non fans are loving the song and fans are hating it and nitpicking. I swear some of you people are never happy with anything she releases.

Thank you so much for posting that interview. Mariah looks absolutely stunning and she was giving me TEOM vibes, but as an elegant and mature 45 year old. It seems that whatever has been bothering her the last year has settled down, and we're seeing the "fun diva" again as opposed to just diva. Mariah has always let her music do the talking when it comes to personal issues, so I think Infinity really helped her move forward with the next stage of her career. It's about having to love yourself first and foremost, so I see this song as her emerging from 2014 and telling people, once again, to never count her out. I know a lot of fans including myself were disappointed at first with the song, but sometimes we need to let Mariah do her. Infinity is perfect for her at the moment. She's given us 25 years of music and will give us another 25. Like she said, it's a clean slate and new chapter. Very happy for her.
