New sound (50,081)
by George Golden from UK

I pray Mariah works with new producers this time. Someone like The Weekend would be amazing and maybe do some collabos with David Guetta or Calvin Harris. More big uptempo numbers would be great. Just saying.

#1's (50,080)
by Mimi L. from Empower Your Highlighter
| |
|
|
Really let's get real here OK? Instead of making some of us feel selfish for wanting MC to continue having more #1's than any other solo artists, you guys should know that MC apparently wants that too. In almost every interview she'll bring up the "you know what the record is, I'm not saying it but you know the charts records" and similar things where she basically tries to remind everyone that she has the most #1's. She did it in many interviews, I don't know how many of you have noticed. It was very apparent she was a little taken aback in one of the radio interviews last year when they didn't know what "statistic" she was talking about. It might have been the Breakfast Club interview or whatever and she tried to bring up her chart record of #1's but she couldn't say it directly and went about it indirectly and the host could not catch it and so she had to move on. She keeps trying to mention that she surpassed Elvis but always adds something like "I can't say it myself". With MC losing credibility over her voice lately and with her music bombing, her record of #1's is one of the most important things of her career she has left. You guys think she'll be happy to lose it? Especially to someone like Rihanna? You guys must really be blind to think MC doesn't care about keeping that record.

#1's (50,079)
by Ethan from United States
| |
|
|
Let's all move on from Jamaica and the Grammys. Can you guys believe that in 2 months we will hear new music from Mariah? And the newly updated #1's CD? I can't wait. We are so wrapped up in this whole thing while Mariah is locked up in her studio cooking up something for us. Haha. It might come out on April 28 (Tuesday) or May 5 (Tuesday) a day before her first show in Vegas. That's like so soon for something so unexpected. I really hope that it will be a great record.

Music, new horizons (50,078)
by MC1989 from Spain

What I meant with "commercial/massive success vs. music quality" is that sometimes these two variables can get together, but many others don't. Just listen to nowadays pop hits. However, songs like "If it's over", "The wind", "Everything fades away", "Underneath the Stars", "I wish you knew" and many others throughout her inmense catalogue never hit a high position in the charts or weren't even released as singles, and are much better than "Touch my body" or DFAU. For me, the important thing is the quality of the sound, not the quantity of number ones. If she starts working on a new song thinking if it'll be her next #1 then she will probably cook that song using non-original ingredients, and it'll probably sound too mainstream or cliché. Or maybe not. Who knows, we'll see. But the most important for me is that she bring us something true, something she can sing live, with good melodies and lyrics (as she almost always does). If she moves closer to soul, that would be a dream come true, as I said.

Times changed (50,077)
by May from Denmark

Pitifully people care more about their idols having number ones and reaching top charts and selling out the most rather than quality. Any place you go you can read how teens fight against each other in a pit over which of their artists has done the "most". And to be honest, a lot of lambs don't stay back when defending Mariah it is usual to see her millions of albums, records and number ones. I always cared about quality, and sound quality (when the artist I like is working for a big label) has been top of my list. Mariah Carey "Rainbow" era sound quality in her studio music diminished and I recall it very well, it didn't have the same depth as when she was in Columbia but with her amazing voice and the great songwriting I could care less. The music quality was still the same and it's still. But I also feel that Mariah many times has played it safe when it comes to music, apart from adding rap/hip hop to her repertoire and in the mid 2000s trying out some 70s vibe her music hasn't changed too much. The only two songs that I would say shocked me when came out were "Touch my body" and "Obsessed", they seemed so different from anything she has done, crazy fun I must say.

MC1989 Because Kylie never had (50,076)
by May from Denmark
| |
|
|
She has never dissed Mariah, not even talked about her in a personal level or musical level. There is only a Q&A from an interview done in Japan in 1997 where after the round of personal questions she had to do a "ping pong" (answer with Love or Hate when listen to the word). When she was told "Mariah Carey" she chose "hate" after giving a thought. I'm pretty sure she choose it thinking musically, as Mariah Carey in that time used to do music that Kylie wasn't much into and didn't appeal her. I like Kylie Minogue a lot, she has been rowing the boat hard also since she was a child and her and Mariah are totally different. The singer is not one to diss people or trash talk, she is neither the scandalous type, in fact, the biggest "diss" she could ever say about another artist is about not having the courage that Lady Gaga has to dress up in her wacky way in the street, and then, that's an opinion not even a diss. Here is the video, as you can see, it is not a big deal. People just like to make a big deal out of it.

I totally agree with you, especially I share what you say about the real instruments-less computer sound, and less struggeling for high notes. Instead I woud preffer to hear simple ballads with catchy and filling piano chords (for instance: like Sam Smith's "I'm not the only one" chords). I would also love to hear her coming close to a kind of urban soul or pop soul using more powerful basses (do you say it like that in English? not bass the instrument, but the line of a song) like for instance something similar to Amy Winehouse's "You know I'm no good" or Adele's "Rolling in the deep", songs that became worldwide hits, not just a #1 on the Billboard Chart (I don't know if they did in fact). I also would like Mariah to stop pretending to fill some songs with high and impossible-to-sing-live high notes or runs. (The perfect example is "Heavenly", the high notes and vocal runs sound so robotic and seem unnatural or overprocessed by a computer.) I need to hear something that moves me inside, rather than some high notes and a very high and difficult part towards the end of a song which she predictably will lip synch live. She doesn't need to prove that she's one of the best voices. We all know that, maybe she should try to prove that ofently on stage as a live performer (like that VOL in Jamaica) and not in the studio.

Collaboration (50,073)
by Matthew from USA
| |
|
|
I think jaker20 hit the nail on the head. Mariah has always been loyal to her producers. Whether it was Walter A back in the day or Jermaine Dupri for the second half of her career. She kind of finds a producer she likes and sticks with them. Then she might reach out to others for a couple of tracks. I'm not sure what her relationship with JD is right now, but it can be assumed that he might not be as heavily involved in the next album. This might be a good thing. #Beautiful is the best single she has released recently, and that was a collab with Happy Perez and Miguel. She needs to do some more of that. She tried to do this with The Dream for Memoirs but it didn't quite work out, so she ran back to Dupri. Hopefully LA Reid can hook her up with someone good. Timbaland recently gave her praise for her last album and I don't think they've worked before so that might be interesting. He's been behind Aalyah and Justin Timberlake's R&B success so he might be able to tweak Mimi while staying true to the R&B that she loves. It would probably be too much to expect her to jump into country or any other genre. It would be pretty cool, but Mimi is pretty much an R&B girl at heart.

The importance of #1's (50,072)
by Marissa from USA
| |
|
|
The only reason I want MC to snag more #1's is because I don't want someone with lesser talent eclipsing her in numbers. If a mediocre singer like Rihanna surpasses her record, the gp is really going to pay MC's accomplishments dust. With the bad publicity that she's been getting lately, those numbers are about the only defense we have when people start talking s*** about her. Rihanna knows how to make a hot song, but MC's songs are meaningful. They are the soundtracks to people's lives. Although they're hot, songs like Umbrella and SOS pale in comparison to impactful songs like Hero, One Sweet Day or My All. I don't want MC to be another case of greatness eclipsed by popularity.

Are #1's really that important? (50,071)
by Ardis Logic from Earth
| |
|
|
Personally I would say the quality of the music is more important to me than scoring another #1. I enjoyed certain songs off MIAM, but there are also a few songs that are really not that great. By not that great, I am referring to the sound quality, and how she invites certain rappers to just say whatever they want on the album. That is really getting old. (Actually that has been annoying me since the Glitter album.) Don't get me wrong, some of her collaborations with rap artist have been really good. Then there are those songs that just make me roll my eyes. I would love to have a whole album that flows together. Better quality music, like "real" instruments, instead of all this computer generated sound. Take it back to the days of the Motown "classic" R&B sound. And above all, don't struggle to hit notes that you don't think you will be able to perform live. If you can't hit the notes anymore fine. Your real fans will still love you no matter what.

Patti Labelle (50,070)
by Bill from the UK

Hi Amber, Patti was not Mariah's godmother from birth. This happened fairly recently, within the last ten years I believe. I'm not sure what happened in Mariah's personal life, but I imagine she would have got baptised (again?) and at that point would have asked Patti to be her Godmother. Patti is very spiritual like Mariah, I love her gospel stuff.

Mariah needs to collaborate (50,069)
by jaker20 from US
| |
|
|
It's not about having another no. 1. It's about growing as an artist. And everyone even the greats needs to grow. When they hit their peak, they have nowhere to go but down. But if you climb a different mountain then you have a new peak to climb. MC needs to collab to show she is a team player. Rihanna does not have MC's vocal abilities and songwriting genius. But Rihanna works well with music peers. Like any other professions, sometimes working well with others wins over talent. Talent can only go too far. Your peers up your game and bring you to another level. During her 90s peak, she's fearless with collabing. But now I think MC is a little scared of teaming with major artists. Fear comes with age and insecurity. I mean how can she team with Lady Gaga or Madonna, MC can't dance. How can MC team with Maroon 5? But a true artist finds a way to make things work. MC is so far from over. It is all up to her. How about a duet with Sam Hunt or Luke Bryan to gain country fans. She has to change gears, the 90s pop overstayed its welcome. There's so many creative and musical avenues she can explore. It's not always about another number but just letting creative juices flow. She can only sing VOL so many times. And for the most part she sings it so bad it just reminds comparison to her past glory she can't reach as high. Climb new mountains.

Mariah's mom was married when Mariah first came out. Her stepfather was the one that sued early in her career because he claimed he wanted to make a doll based on Mariah and she agreed to it at first because she thought he was joking. But when he was seriosuly wanting to do it, she declined. I believe also, he claimed to have paid dental bills that Mariah never paid back before she was famous. I don't know if he had connections with anyone in the industry. I think her brother's connection was who hooked Mariah up with Ben Margulies. I think the reason why Mariah had a hard time to get a deal at first was because no one wanted another Whitney, except Tommy had thought Mariah would be perfect for Columbia to have someone to rival Whitney. Which makes me wonder what plans Warner Brothers had for Mariah before she signed with Columbia.

Number ones (50,065)
by George Golden from UK
| |
|
|
If Rhianna can score a top ten with four, five seconds, we have a problem. She is currently at number 6. Mariah should seriously wake up now because Rhianna means business. Someone that sings with sir Paul is looking for a number one hit. Mariah needs a monster hit. A big uptempo number in the realm of uptown funk, something really massive that people will find hard to resist. She needs a song that will be bigger than any negative press, a song that people can really groove to. With this upcoming number ones album, she could release about 5 new tracks with big hit makers. The hip hop has to go now, back to pop/rnb grooves. She could even throw in a few edms into mix. She should basically try new things. No more rap collabos because it has been beaten to death. Please Mariah, your fans will be seriously let down if someone like Rhianna surpasses you.

If I am not mistaken, Patti isn't actually Mariah's Godmother. She just calls her that out of love and respect for her. I think Patti and Mariah met after she became a star, and since Mariah was always a fan of Patti and Patti likes Mariah so MC calls Patti her Godmother. Patti didn't know Mariah up until after she became famous. Plus I do not think MC had diva behavior since she was a child. She had quite a hard life and if you even see her up until early 2000s, she was pretty humble and down to earth. The diva behavior came later as a disguise, an alter ego if you will, which later engulfed her completely. And what stepfather are you talking about?

Mariah goes on tour with 20 concerts, but only Japan goes viral. Mariah sings a 16 song setlist, but only Fantasy goes viral. Both are the very first while the others are ignored. This is why people shouldn't make judgments based off clips of bits and pieces. In Jamaica, Mariah took a lozenge out of her mouth and called it "Nordic medicine". She went live on Ellen and said she was suffering bronchitis. Being mental or drunk may be "sexier" ailments for some people, but it appears the reality is more mediocre. Travel and stress doesn't agree very well with MC this year and she's struggling with throat inflammation. She was blind-sighted by a divorce right before Christmas, fired help lawsuits, low propositions for labels that will ultimately not invest much in her work. All that in the past 2 months. You can plan for concert dates, but you can't plan an illness. Throat issues would require last minute changes to the setlist and how you can sing it. Missing a sound check makes it all the worse. The sheer fact MC's best vocals this year came from her Christmas shows only emphasizes how staying in one place with a controlled environment is crucial for her right now. Since Vegas will provide her with those conditions, how the show plays out will be entirely up to what she does.

Rihanna actually is the biggest threat. She is not past her peak. She just scored a number 1 with Eminem a while back. She is young and has a huge fan following. Don't forget that people thought Mariah's career has peaked and was going into decline when Glitter happened. No one thought she'd bounce back but she came back with 3 more #1's, so underestimating Rihanna isn't wise. Taylor Swift is someone who Mariah can worry about later. She has 3 number #1s. Once she reaches 10, that's when she's a threat. I would however love for MC to work with Taylor and see what they can cook up, they are both great songwriters. One other thing I see people saying is that MC will still have the record of female songwriter with most #1's, while that is true, at this point you guys are just clutching on to whatever you have. How many times did you hear Mariah being promoted as the female songwriter with most #1's during an interview introduction or video montage during performances on shows and concerts? It's always "artist with most #1 hits", "over 200 million albums sold" and "the voice". Mariah has many records under her name, but her being able to hold the 18 number 1s for so long is one of her top selling points, so if she wants to keep that image, the work needs to start.

Coinsidence? (50,059)

Someone in the comments below pointed out that Aretha was Whitney's Godmother. Well then I remembered that Patti Labelle is Mariah's Godmother. Hmm interesting right? Also, Mariah has always had connections, the problem was non of the people around her believed in her for what ever reason (which I can't beleive, but I'm guessing it was her diva personality she had since she was a child). If Patti Labelle is your Godmother, and your stepfather and you brother had connections, why was it so hard for Mariah considering her level of talent and beauty? Please shed light on this someone.

by Rashidi Rahim Rick from Malaysia

In my humble view, Mariah's best performance of My All would be at SNL 1997. That's where she looked the best, golden side-parted hair and she's wearing a red top, black suit and black pants, talk about sexy and classy at the same time. Her voice was on point, lower, middle and high range were all perfectly executed. She seemed to be in full confidence and in control of the performance. How I wish the new generations would be able to see this performance. Somehow, deep inside me, I wish Mariah could deliver her vocals just like this performance again.
