Time for lists lol (103,024)

Randy you know the word "list" summons me from my 90s bubble. This is from a US perspective seeing as she's only had 3 #1's in the UK.
10. Never Too Far 9. Loverboy 8. I Know What You Want 7. I Want to Know What Love Is 6. Butterfly 5. Make It Happen 4. Can't Let Go 3. Breakdown 2. Anytime You Need a Friend 1. Without You

Can't Take That Away (Mariah's Theme) 7. Loverboy 6. Never Forget You/Without You 5. Breakdown 4. Bye Bye 3. Can't Let Go 2. Through The Rain 1. Butterfly

Emotionally stiff (103,022)
by Andrew from the UK

I believe Music Box was savaged by critics because they just didn't like Mariah: young girl marries the much older, much less attractive, boss of the record company. For love? There's no way to know other than to go off Mariah's representations but given that she is a very unreliable witness/narrator, to say the least, it's dubious. It seemed, to many, like a shrewd calculated move by a conceited climber, so to speak. And the critics went off her. She responded with Daydream and she sat at the Grammy's next to Tommy Mottola looking like a spare at a wedding. What was going through her mind on that night, I wonder? Whatever was going through her mind when she married Tommy, whether for her career or for love, it was a gobsmackingly stupid thing to do for a whole host of reasons that I don't just see in hindsight - I saw them back then as I am sure many here did. But Music Box is a masterpiece of power balladry and bubblegum pop and should stop being disparaged by everyone just because they think it's cool to do so. Admittedly, there is infinitely more nuance to the vocal performance on Daydream, but, c'mon, you aren't really going to claim that Mariah would not have sung Daydream just like Music Box had the pipes not started, er, overheating - which I think must have been the reason Mariah took her clothes off in 1997 and not put them back on since: to cool down. It just made matters even worse, because critics and many fans alike never really forgave the sudden emergence of Long Island Barbie. It's frustrating to think of what could have been had she made different choices. I don't think Mariah as naive as people make out she was. She took several gambles and they backfired. So yes, Music Box was pop-crafted power schmaltz balladry but Whitney did exactly the same and critics loved her.

I agree with you that some people got a pass while Mariah was being disparaged for formulaic and schmaltzy ballads that came off as emotionally flat. But Mariah was definitely guilty of this especially during the Emotions and Music Box era. Some of that material was very catchy, but very cliché at the same time. Some vocal performances from that time period - especially on recordings - focused on frenetic but impressive vocal gymnastics that appeal to people who prefer Hallmark card sentiments and adult contemporary/romantic comedy kitch.
Daydream is when I really started falling in love with Mariah Carey as a creative singer-songwriter. She started making more intelligent musical "choices" as a vocalist then and begin to sound more like a creative person with something other than skill and novelty to offer. In other words, the artist I thought she foreshadow it on her debut album took centerstage by the time Butterfly came out.

MC should come clean (103,021)

Really? If you go to the Epic website and scroll through their artist roster names, MC's name is not there. Legacy Recordings exist to manage the archive recordings of artists who released recordings under Sony and its subsidiaries. The Rarities album was released under Columbia/Legacy.

So, we're just making things up now? Mariah hasn't been dropped. Epic is just another branch of Sony, Mariah's under Legacy for older artists. They're not going to get rid of her, she makes too much money every Christmas along with her back catalog. She has a 3 album deal and has only delivered 1. If they dropped her, they'd have to pay for that. Which didn't work out well for Virgin. She delivered different compilations with new music in 2019 and 2020. She can release an album when she wants to, but there's no rush in such a climate. She just finished producing a Broadway show and was discussing making her memoir movie. She's doing a lot behind the scenes. Her deal doesn't include touring, she has a specific deal with Live Nation. The way you all rip her vocals apart no matter what she does just doesn't surprise me, she's not rushing to release new material. Madonna's deal is done, not sure why she was brought up in this convo at all, did she even get a new one?

There is only one other major female R&B singer without a label right now. Her name is Jill Scott. She only released one album on Atlantic and they dropped her just like MC on Epic with Caution. I guess when you no longer have the radio hits and enormous album sales, female artists have a difficult time keeping their record deals. What is Madonna doing differently that keeps her career moving forward without the radio hits and enormous album sales? If MC would go independent, she would receive more respect as an older female artist. A partnership record deal with a high profile pop or R&B male artist would help kick start her career too. I definitely could see Trey Songz or Ryan Tedder do a full complete album with MC.

Will we ever have another album? (103,019)
by "MariahHater" from Hell

It's almost 5 years since Caution. Her longest with no proper album releases. She gave us jams but of course, everyone is excited for another era of Mariah Carey. I am not complaining but more of wanting another art to consume. Continuous seeking of newness will always be a caveat of any living human.

Celine is an awesome vocalist. You know I love me some Celine, mate. But when she does her soft cooey emotional soft voice, I cringe. Perhaps it is the Britishness in me but it makes me very uncomfortable. And watching her do it on stage doubles the pain with her faux-emotional staring into the distance.
Whitney never got this nonsense. But listen to her records and find emotion in them. She bellows everything. Her contributions to The Bodyguard sountrack are obnoxious bellowing. Where was the criticism of Whitney bellowing IWALY? She shouts the whole bloody thing. And Run To You. And I Have Nothing. There's no emotion in these songs at all.
Mariah, no cringey over-emoting and no over-shouting.

Definitely in my top ten songs by her. As soon as I read your post, I started singing it and my eyes welled up. I'm going through some things. Sometimes I find myself singing it when I'm putting on airs. I wonder would you cry for me if you knew. This is what music is supposed to do. And now I understand why MC wants us to relate rather than tell us who a song is written about. Although I think it's safe to say Side Effects is about Tommy.

I always thought Mariah had somewhat diminished that power and poignancy of Languishing by calling it an interlude. I recall many others here many years ago feeling the same.
Maybe Mariah means (in one fell swoop with just one word) in a song about damage to your person caused by the emotional abuse you received from a lover long ago is not forever. That is to say: the misery must be seen as an interlude in your life. That it is not what makes your story. That it is only what interrupted it.
