Concept video I would love (41,830)
by Me. I am Carly from USA
| |
|
|
The video I would love to see, would have Mariah playing herself in a bunch of different roles (different wigs sort long). So you would have Bastille diva Mariah against normal woman Mariah. We would see Mariah in her old jobs as a kid. She is sweeping hair and the diva Mariah comes in and tells her she missed a spot. We would see the coat check girl giving diva Mariah her huge fur coat (only she would be chewing gum and smile as she hands the coat bag, putting her chewed gum in the pocket). We would have Long Island Mariah waitressing and she would be serving the awful diva Mariah food turn away and roll her eyes. I wanna see some choreography to like a Heartbreaker moment. I think people love a concept video and with Mariah doing double roles playing up the diva demands and rumors and behavior people would eat it up in my opinion.

You're Mine is not the problem (41,828)
by Me. I am Carly from USA
| |
|
|
I do not believe that the quality of You're Mine is at all the problem, I think this is a fresh sparkling song if not the best radio release. I love the song for what it is, a smooth sweet song that makes me feel like I am sitting on the beach with a sweet drink. I also like that it takes Mariah in a nice direction away from the really overly colab whisper stuff. I totally agree that it is too quiet though to entice a huge audience. You must look at someone like JLo to see that a cute song can be huge with the right image and promo, and I can name a million others who are pretty singers who don't dance and the image is enough to garner success.

Singer/songwriter and other titles (41,827)

I think "Singer/songwriter" would be a cool album title as would "Church street", "BPM" (I would say like whatever the heart beat is like "120 BPM").

YME out from Hot 100 (41,826)

Sad news. Mariah Carey's new single You're Mine (Eternal) is out of Billboard Hot 100 despite the radio success after only a week in the chart. This is not happening. But whatever it is, I still support MC and love her music.

TEOM era is her best "image" (41,825)
by jaker20 from US

Remember that promo interview with Steve Jones? That is the MC I want back. That is TEOM era. Actually most of her during that era is one I want back. Super composed, very professional, looks like a boss, a maneater. Very serious but still fun and bubbly. A mature woman who is very confident. And in spite of that exterior, she was a creative monster. Mature lyrics, creative and imaginative videos. Now she's just... unbearable. She's become, as they say, a caricature of her old self. She actually regressed to her old ways after TEOM, both in interviews and musical style and lyrically. Very strange, when you're a fan of MC for a long time, you can actually see her creative arc, and its on a downslope the past 3 years. Now I could not talk about her in the present tense. It's always the past. She doesn't have to have more number ones. I just want good music and someone who I can love without feeling embarrassed. Now everyone I know can't stand her.

Mimi and her people need to get it together, pronto (41,824)
by John from USA

I must first re-affirm my love for Mariah. I have been a huge fan since I heard "Honey" in 1997. I have all of her albums (several copies of some of them), and I used to even collect her singles. As a long-time fan, I am well aware of the high quality of music she is more than capable of. However, if Mariah genuinely wants another hit single/hit album, she needs to really start making smarter choices. If we look at the E=MC2, we can see how bad decisions (not releasing Migrate, falling of the face of the Earth after TMB) can quickly result in your demise. Especially now, when competing against the current "can do no wrong artists" such as Rihanna, Katy, and Miley. Mariah is no longer a "can do no wrong" artist like she was in the 90s. As beautiful as she is, she needs to class her image up, and stop making music videos that are softcore porn (and I'm a straight male who discovered "Honey" when I was a teenager, lol). She hasn't had a good video since TMB. YM(E) has grown on me, but I don't think it's the hit she's looking for. It's too bland. However, I will commend her and her team on the radio promo and interviews they did for YM(E), that's at least a step in the right direction. But if she wants the next single and album to be successful, a lot more work needs to be done. And I'm hard on her, because I know she can do it. Mariah Carey is music. There is no reason why she can't have another radio hit and successful album. She and her team need to get out of their own way.

You're Mine, new album (41,822)
by Andrew from UK
| |
|
|
I just watched the BET performance, it was pretty dire, not at all world class, or what people expect from Mariah. Like others have said, she should have maybe taken vocal rest and performed the song stripped back fully live. As for the video for You're Mine, that's pretty dreadful too. She looks awkward constantly touching her face, doesn't come across well at all. Last night I watched some earlier videos on YouTube, her videos these days are just not on the same level. All the blame cannot be put onto IDJ or lack of money. I am, and always will be a huge fan, I just feel Mimi is a bit lost in music. I was hoping this was going to be a comeback era. "You're mine" just hasn't hit the right spot.

On the subject of image and respect (41,821)

I love how artists/singers who aren't necessarily R&B or Pop like Grimes and Ryan Adams for example, have such respect and admiration for Mariah. She is an artist who transcends all genres, I think that's pretty cool.

Yes ILT was great and I also loved the live performances, especially the TAOM tour mix, the one at VH-1 and some others I can't remember at the moment. And to think that ILT, WBT, SIO and GYN wasn't even in the first track list of the album. These four went on to become the first few singles, each with great videos. and Say Somethin' although different and I enjoy it sometimes although not much, was not a good way to start the album. When the beat of ILT starts, it's bound to make people atleast sway. By the way, the tracks you listed, out of that man of the hour reminds me of Standing O, as it has a line called "you're the man of the hour" and it's for real sounds like "4real4real" although the writers seem to be different.

Mariah's image is tarnished and she needs to do something to make it better. I saw a Yahoo article judging BET Honor performances. Not only was Mariah's 7 out of 10 but the comments were really negative. A bunch of people said her outfit was inappropriate for the event and she was lip synching. This is a bad sign. Mariah's losing respect in this industry even though I don't want to say so she is. And she needs to do something to gain that respect back. As for clothing wise Mariah could try for the sexy thing without show all of her boob. Go back to the era of Butterfly, it was sexy without trying to hard to be sexy. And as for singing I know it was at least mostly live. But to really pursuae people so that they know for a fact it's live she should go on vocal rest for as long as she needs to so she can sing the song fully live. And stop with the back tracks and just go back to back up singers because all back track does is make people think your lip synching.

You are too funny man. Let's move on haha. I agree, IDJ are clearly not willing to invest in Mariah. Her videos in recent years have clearly not had good budgets, hence why Nick has directed a few. I do think that low budget videos can be done well and tastefully. Some of the most simple videos have been some of the best in history, such as Chris Isaak's Wicked Game, or even Beyonce's Single Ladies. I'm not saying Mariah should do a video like either of them, but the point is more thought needs to go into her videos, irrespective of the budget. Sitting down half naked with a wind machine isn't working lol. If she wants to do sexy or sultry, then I suggest she looks at both My All and The Roof from her own back catelog, which were great videos and probably not the most expensive she has made.

Champagne (41,815)
by Bill from the UK
| |
|
|
It's plain as day to me that the champagne is what is wrecking her career. I was watching an old video from 1996 on YouTube and she was saying how all she drinks is water and honey tea "to help her voice". I remember at the Daydream concert in London (oh what a night that was, so glad I saw her during her peak) she regularly paused to drink honey and lemon tea between songs. Now it's splashes this and splashes that. She can barely strong a sentence together now in interviews and cannot sing live anymore. Whatever issues she has which is causing her to depend on alcohol, she needs to take her own advice and let go.

It's too much RnB. I think the remix with this male singer (I don't remember his name) is better than the original. I would love a ballad in the pop genre. Less RnB. Edward: you must send me a text message. Whats app. I lost my phone, I lost your number.

YME is #88 on Billboard' Hot 100. I'm going to give it a month or two before I decide it's a hit or flop commercially. To me it's a hit but to the general population obviously not. Mariah, you've got to do something to get the general population interested in this song.

MC definitely needs to be handled at this point (41,811)
by jaker20 from US
| |
|
|
Someone has to tell her the style is super out of touch, the videos needs to be classier and high concept (you don't need big budget for high concept), the songs need to be more mature and lyrics with more mature smarter stuff. She did this in TEOM so I don't see why she can't do it again. Why does she has to go back to this same shtick. It's super tired and super corny. MC needs to be directed by a creative person who will stand up for this. Unfortunately, some artists when they reach a certain level of success things they can do it all and not take other's opinion. Well this is the result we are getting. Subpar single, video and performances. If the supposed album that is 3+ years in the making don't get released at all I won't be surprised.

Edward / videos (41,810)
by Mimi L. from Empower Your Highlighter

You are right, IDJ won't allocate a lot of money for Mariah's videos now that she's going through a low point in her career. I actually blame IDJ for some of Mariah's bad selling singles. Because E=MC2 had some really good songs and it could have been bigger had they released better singles. Releasing Migrate and the A.C. remix of I'm That Chick would have really gotten her greater selling singles. People started getting into more dance techno music around 2008 and although these aren't really under techno category but it would have fit in nicely. Same with Memoirs, there were some real gems in that one the single choices accompanied by the horrid videos (post Obsessed) kinda brought the album down. But even if Mariah is on a low budget she could still work around it. I mean she went to Puerto Rico and could have moved around more and used cut scenes of flashbacks of her and trey spending time together.

Isaac / ILT (41,809)
by Mimi L. from Empower Your Highlighter

You are so right about the dresses. Both the outfits were so gorgeous and sexy and classy. The first one had that beautiful stone work and the second was casual yet fun and flirty. I remember M breaking down the story behind the video and said that the video shows she's attending two parties, one which is put together by her aged fiance and it's supposed to be formal and boring (the one with the peach-golden gown) and then she changes into a more relaxed dress (the black one) and attends her own party where her friends are and that's where she's seen having fun. I loved the subtle yet cute/sexy moves M pulled in that video. As for "Time of your life", I enjoyed that song too. Although I am not sure if there is a full version of it, it was part of the ringtones set, but I think there is an extended version, not sure though. Those ringtones had some good songs too, there was a jazz-like one there, plus many fun ones.

Twitter and tracklist (41,807)
by Paul from Usa

Has anybody dared to go to twitter and search "Mariah Carey"? Would anybody else be disappointed if the last 5 songs were part of the new album? And only get about 7 additional songs we've never heard before? I think as a gift they should be on another disc, accompanied with this album, or bonus tracks at the end of the CD. I think we all agree based on charts that "Beautiful" was the successor over the others, and that was released last summer. What do you all think?

Yes Carly, she should def work with Diane again. She always did a great job giving Mariah’s videos a plot and made her act out her scenes to where she was actually doing something that prevented her from looking into the camera thus appearing more natural. Of course she made sure she gave her the solo beauty moments as Mariah wouldn’t have it any other way, but she always seemed to have plenty of other footage that helped tell a story. The Roof was brilliant. I also really liked Breakdown, even though the chair routine seemed to slow the video down in the beginning. I enjoyed the choreography. Many people are against it, but her moves were always simple and cute and it prevented her from posing unnecessarily. Debbie Allen has done a great job incorporating Mariah into the choreography, even if it is minimal. I enjoyed the Obsessed choreography, I liked how they lifted her in the air. Choreography is needed in a video, even if it is minimal, so that it gives the artist something to do instead of staring into a camera for 3 minutes while posing unnaturally. It doesn’t have to be dancing, it can be as simple as acting a scene out and directing the artist on how it should be acted out in order to keep the artist from focusing on how they look from whatever angle they are being shot at. It should be the director, not the artist, making sure that the artist’s appearance is still appealing while still coming off as natural as possible. Mariah only changed to shots from Herb Ritts directed video because he made sure that she was still aesthetically pleasing while appearing as natural as possible. I don’t believe she stared at the camera once in that whole video or was even given the chance to pose unnaturally.

I totally agree. The vibe is usually negative on here. I love Mariah and I know she has flaws. I have flaws. You all have flaws. Mariah has worked very hard in her career and it is a shame that she doesn't have more credibility for what she has accomplished. I personally love YM(E) and from what I see she has busted her back to promote this single. Radio does not play Mariah and she has put on a gruelling radio campaign while working on her album, projects for Christmas, books, perfume and being a wife and mother. Most artists are not in the business for more than a few years while Mariah has been at it for decades. I think that there will be something for everyone on this album. Until them the ones that enjoy the song need to make sure to support it by streaming, requesting etc.

Label / album situation (41,803)
by 123 from USA

|
|
Even if the label isn't supporting her, as long as they are releasing the singles and ultimately the album, she should go all in on making it a success. Once LA left, the label didn't release anymore of her projects such as the remix album. Mariah even expressed how she was hoping the label would just release one of the remix songs on Memoirs and see what happens. I do not know if anyone else picked up that a label head's name was mentioned during her MTV First interview while promoting You're Mine. To know that a label head is present during promo at a MTV interview is concerning, especially when Mariah stated that he hadn't heard the three new songs that she completed. I always thought that all songs had to be submitted and approved prior to appearing on an album. That leads me to believe that hell or highwater, the album is coming out and both parties will be parting ways. The release of the album has dragged out long enough and I believe both parties are aching to be rid of each other. Why would she release a single if she is still working on the album? It is like Beautiful all over again. She was so busy trying to finish the album that she didn't have time to promote the song, had she, it would have went number 1. It was doing well with the handful of performances she is doing. She needs to stop rushing everything out, even Beautiful felt incomplete and rushed out because they had a good lead single on their hands, but there wasn't even a bridge on that song.
