Touching all topics (38,829)

Well, in my opinion, to get the whole Ariana Grande thing out the way, yes she has similar sounding vocals to Mariah, but to compare is ridiculous to me. Can't people understand the magnitude of talent this woman possesses? The lip singing is so understanding due to the fact that she is no longer pressured to go through extensive work to maintain her vocals. She's a mother and wife now, so people have to understand. I love that she's releasing all these remixes, she doesn't have to but it's good until her album drops. It would be nice to hear #Beautiful (Reprise) on her album. I love that only one song has been released. It takes me back to how music was released back in the days. I would love for her to remake Anniversary by Toni Tony Toné. It would fit her perfectly. Daydream was definitely a classic and Butterfly is my all time favourite. I think she's taking her time now with the album so she can rest and heal so she can be able to tour and promote her album.

At first I thought it was just me, but trust me you're not the only one who thinks Ariana's diction is pretty off. Alot of people make the exact same point.

The next Mariah, Daydream (38,827)
by Joe from United Kingdom

I completely agree with you guys about when people compare new female singers to Mariah. A new female comes out sings well, hits a couple high notes and there suddenly is the next Mariah. I then go listen to them and just feel slightly dissapointed because it's like I'm clearly not hearing what they are. It's cool to see how much you guys love Daydream. Out of her 90's albums, this is the one I seem to listen to the most. It's rare that you can listen to the album practically all the way through, but with this album that is definitely the case. I never really think about what my favourite albums are, but I think Daydream is probably one of her best to me.

Ariana the new Mariah. Really? (38,826)
by Edward from USA

I also hate when people label her the new Mariah. Maybe Leona Lewis come close, but Ariana, I doubt it. I like Ariana, I think she's nice, but vocally she can't touch Mariah even now. Leona Lewis can sing circles around Ariana, but being promoted as the new Mariah didn't work for Simon. Some think that just having a powerful voice will cut it, but many with big voices like Jennifer Hudson never found an audience. Ariana sounds as if she's imitating Mariah, and that might backfire. If she doesn't find her own voice, I don't think she'll be around long. On YouTube some even have the audacity to say that Mariah sounds like Ariana.

Ariana Grande (38,825)

I had to check this girl out. Pretty voice but lol, this girl has like no diction. Am I the only one who can't understand a word she sings? It sounds like another language. I listened to a song called I Love The Way. But back to Mariah. Yes, Daydream did set the bar in many ways, and Butterfly was like an updated Daydream. I'm not sure what it is, but Butterfly just doesn't quite deliver the punch that Daydream did for me. Over time, it was grown on me more and more though. Tracks like Breakdown, Babydoll, The Roof... beautiful songs. In fact, The Roof is probably one of the best songs Mariah has ever written. I love how atmospheric it is, and how the driving beat and sirens and bells and things all help simulate being out on a rooftop in the rain, and her soft, soft vocals. Wonderful. I need to go listen to it now lol.

Yes. I totally agree. It's so annoying when people compare Ariana to MC. She can hit a couple of high notes, but there is no soul behind her vocal. My mom called me the other day asking if that was MC's new song. Lol. I was like you can't be serious. But I have to remember that this industry always wants to have all the little pop tarts with a decent vocal be the "next" Mariah if they can hit a D6. Haha. I remember they did the same thing with Christina Aguilera. And Christina's vocals to me are a hot mess most of the time and she has a pretty voice. She just likes to scream and call it singing. Also, I agree that Daydream was like the blueprint for Butterfly. Both albums to me are very deep. Songs like "Looking in", "I am free", "Outside". And then to me her writing masterpieces like "Butterfly", "Underneath the stars" and " Fourth of July". I could go on. But yes, I totally agree with you.

Stacey / Daydream (38,823)
by Stephen from London, United Kingdom

Stacey, Daydream is definitely one of Mariah's finest bodies of work. For me, it's better than TEOM and set the blueprint for Butterfly, which is my favourite Mariah album. It's definitely in my top 3 Mariah albums. There's not one track I skip. I find it interesting that Ariana Grande wants to rip off that sound and the look from Fantasy, and that era as a whole, yet Mariah wants to run away from it. The girl is starting to make some big waves. She's good, but she's no Mariah. Not even close lol.

#Hermosa has really grown on me (38,822)
by Deedre aka MiTodoChop @HBF from Canada

The first time I heard it I really didn't like it. I thought it was choppy. But after a few listens I really love it now. Mariah's Spanish ad-libs are really funny and bring out her personality. Although the video has been criticized for being low budget, I prefer it so much more than the original version. The #Hermosa video feels so much more relaxed and less "false" and "put on". Yes, she's still got the sexy bikini shots, yet it works and feels so much more natural with the beauty of Capri in there. The video is so much less in your face which in my opinion is incredibly well matched to the song. There are some shots in #Hermosa she looks just so stunning. And, damn, I want to go swim in one of those caves. I am determined to do it. Lol.

Daydream / Stacey (38,821)
by Bill from the UK
| |

I agree Stacey, Daydream has always been my favourite album. I know a lot of fans like Butterfly and Emancipation over it, but for me the songwriting was really on point with Daydream. Every track worked, and there was so much going on (every song had "layers" of vocals, instruments, background etc., that the whole mood and vibe was indeed like being in a dream). Also think the remixes put out for the singles were the best (love the acapella of One Sweet Day, UTS Drifting Remix and of course Fantasy with ODB, but also loved the Def Club Mix and the Morales ABMB mix). Her best tour supported it as well (and I went to the London date - unforgettable).

Thank you. The ABMB cover has long been one of my favourite pictures of Mariah. I remember when I saw the single in the record store after school that I actually gasped I was so stunned by it. What is your favourite single or album cover? My best album cover is probably Music Box or Merry Christmas. Aside from ABMB I also love Without You, Loverboy and Make It Happen.

Toni Braxton (38,816)
by Bill from the UK

I've long been a fan of Toni Braxton and her smooth, soulful vocals. I loved the first couple of albums she put out. A Babyface collab with her and Mariah has the potential to sound fantastic - the husky lows of Toni's alto against Mariah's soprano could really work.

I had a dream about this. I am right there salivating with the rest of you. Now that's an exciting collab. About The Beatles. I love their music. I have for years, own their music and consider myself a fan. MC is hands down my favourite artist ever, but when she breaks the single record, it won't diminish one tiny bit of their legendary work. I don't understand why people get so defensive. The day will come as some point when someone "breaks" Mariah's record, and it won't diminish her catalog or her accomplishments. Mariah is deserving of being in the ranks with The Beatles. Seriously can't wait for the new MC album.

Mariah and Toni Braxton is epic (38,813)

I would be in heaven if they worked together. I would love for Mariah and Babyface to write the lyrics. It could actually be a single. Toni is in desperate need of a hit, and if the song is not just a rush and lazy one, it could be epic.

Toni Braxton/female collabos (38,808)
by Stephen from London, United Kingdom

The thought of a Toni Braxton collaboration leaves me salivating at the mouth. I would love it. Up until and including her Libra album, she was always on point for me. One of my favourite artists. I'd also love Mariah to duet with Chaka Khan. Another very diverse singer, who like Mariah seamlessly went from jazz, to up tempo rnb, to ballads and even incorporated hip hop into her music. Their voices would mesh very well together. I would like Mariah to do some more female collabos. Does anyone else have any other females they would like Mariah to collaborate with?

#1s / The Beatles record / Beyonce album (38,805)
by clueey23 from USA
| |
|
|
I remember when MC performed "Obsessed" on AGT and after Nick said she was the single artist with the most #1s and MC said "There is a group who has more, and clearly we can't touch them." I think this was Mariah's way of letting the public know that she will not match or break The Beatles record because of the politics in the music industry. I forget who said it on here, but I believe you were right about radio programmers and industry heads being upset that she broke Elvis' record. And I remember when she broke The Beatles record for most weeks at #1 with "Heartbreaker" and folks were really upset about it. Also I was reading an article in Billboard and Beyonce has scrapped her whole album. And I don't see people up in arms about the pushback. I think MC should get that same if not more respect for taking her time with the album. I also feel like Mariah should give us live instrumentation on this upcoming album. Her vocals shine so much more with that type of production.

MC's fall reminds me of when Madonna fell from a horse almost 10 years ago, which started the collapse of her marriage. I didn't know MC's injury is this serious. Happy thoughts.
